WPA? What’s That?

Upcoming Events

The year has just started, but students are already making their preparations for the WPA convention. If you don’t know much about WPA, this is the perfect time to learn! The Western Psychological Association holds an annual convention in the spring where psychologists and students from all over the west coast come together to share their work in the field of psychology. The convention offers a variety of events, including symposiums, poster sessions, and lectures from renowned psychologists. Some prominent figures that made an appearance last year include Elizabeth Loftus, known for her work in false memory, and Philip Zimbardo, most famous for the Stanford prison study. Other renowned psychologists that gave presentations in the past years include David Myers, social psychologist and author of several textbooks that the PUC Psychology department uses, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced me-HIGH chicksent-me-HIGH-ee), i.e. ‘the flow guy’. Equally, if not more, exciting is the opportunity for students to get involved. WPA accepts submissions from undergraduates as well as graduates and professionals, and provided that the submission is approved, students can present their own research project at a poster session. PUC psychology students do quite a bit of research, whether to complete a requirement or to sate one’s academic curiosity. Many of them continue working on their paper after the project is finished, with the intention to present at WPA. So it’s not surprising that we have several groups presenting at the convention each year.
