Summer 2013

Dear Sponsors, From Chukkers to Divots, we’ve got it covered. But more than that, our riders are really what it’s all about. The ‘Ride to Thrive Polo Classic’ has become a premier northern Virginia event. We have steadily increased attendance each year and made it the largest annual fundraiser for the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program. This year we are grateful to once again enjoy the exclusive location at Chetwod Park in The Plains, Virginia. And that’s not all– with marketing, steady press and an active equestrian community behind us, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our Polo Classic for 2013. We are thrilled to present you with our varied sponsorship opportunities. For whatever you fancy— polo ponies to tickets to table reservations, your needs will be met! The perfect mix of fun and support— from the “most luxurious sport in the world” to those who benefit most. We cordially welcome you— and thank you for the opportunity. Most Sincerely Yours, Breeana Bornhorst Executive Director

Ill. About the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Prgram (NVTRP)

The True Champions of Sport For 33 years, the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) has provided equine-assisted activities and therapy to children and adults living in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Our riders come from all walks of life: a child diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy or Down syndrome; a young teen coping with the effects of abuse; an elderly adult now a wheelchair user who lives with the vestiges of polio; or a veteran regaining life’s balance while recovering from a brain injury or post traumatic stress disorder. Our programs are designed to improve mobility; gain core strength, muscle control and balance; build self-esteem, further socialization and give everyone a sense of community and belonging— all while riding or working with a horse. We build and focus on abilities, not disabilities, by providing high-quality therapeutic riding and hippotherapy in an inclusive community setting.

IV. About Therapeutic Riding

Improving Well-Being Therapeutic Riding uses equine-oriented activities to improve the wellbeing of individuals with disabilities. Therapeutic riding benefits riders in a variety of ways: • Cognitively. Riders participate in a wide variety of games and exercises on horseback designed to increase their ability to listen, learn and communicate. • Physically. The gentle movement of the horse stimulates a natural instinct for the riders to balance themselves by using deep muscles not easily worked in conventional physical therapy. The horse’s rhythmical motion and warmth also provide relaxation to spastic muscles. Riders perform exercises on the horse that improve balance, endurance, range of motion and strength. • Emotionally. The feeling of achievement that comes from riding and controlling a 1,100– pound horse is strong medicine for the spirit. Riders experience increased self-confidence, self-control and independence as they learn a skill normally performed by able-bodied people. • Socially. The world can seem to be a small place to those challenged by a disability. As riders explore their surroundings on a horse, their interest in the world around them increases. The horse’s non-judgmental demeanor has been proven to reduce anxiety and encourage interaction with others.
