The Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program NVTRP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization United Way #8400 Combined Federal Campaign #60139 3

Welcome! September 21, 2013 On behalf of the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) and the 2013 Ride to Thrive Polo Classic committee and volunteers, we would like to welcome you to the 7th Ride to Thrive Polo Classic. This event is such a fun tie-in to what NVTRP’s all about! Through riding and working with horses, clients at NVTRP gain strength, balance, confidence, and so much more. NVTRP serves children and adults with disabilities, youth-at-risk, and recovering military service personnel. The Ride to Thrive Polo Classic is the largest fundraiser of the year for NVTRP, a nonprofit 501(c)(3). We are incredibly grateful to the Seager and Nash families for their generosity and for helping us bring the Ride to Thrive Polo Classic geographically closer to NVTRP and for helping to make it such a successful event. I have been involved with NVTRP for 12 years and the impact of the program on the lives of our riders, their families, and our volunteers continues to fill my heart with joy. Some of the highlights this year from the riders I teach include an adult rider with vision impairment learning to jump, a young boy with autism learning to ride independently, and one of our riders who uses a wheelchair getting to compete in his first horseshow. So many people come together to make our riders’ lives better through the power of the horse. Thank you for being a part of making it all possible! Kelsey Gallagher Community Involvement Coordinator Chair, Ride to Thrive Polo Classic 2013 4

ABOUT CHETWOOD PARK

Chetwood Park in The Plains, Virginia evokes the feeling of a fine country estate in Ireland or England, a perfect home for the Seager family who are natives of Ireland. The stone house above the polo field at Chetwood Park was built in the 1740s by Captain John O’Bannon, a Revolutionary War soldier from County Tipperary, Ireland. The captian’s grandson Rear Admiral Presely O’Bannon led the U.S. Marine charge at Tripoli and planted the first U.S. flag on foreign soil. The main house at Chetwood Park was expanded and renovated several years ago, blending historic beginnings with modern features. The farm also includes the original stone farm house that has undergone a beautiful restoration and enlargement, a manager’s house, tennis court, swimming pool, stables, barns, and outbuildings. The land is actively farmed and supports a herd of cattle, mostly Black Angus, and polo ponies that are raised and trained. This exquisite, secluded property is surrounded by endless fieldstone walls dating back to Civil War times and the rolling hills of the Orange County Hunt— the oldest and one of the best fox-hunting territories in the United States.

ABOUT NVTRP

The Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with disabilities, youth-at-risk, and military service personnel through the challenging, physically-active sport of horseback riding. There is an opportunity for everyone at NVTRP, whether it is a child diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy or Down syndrome; a young teen coping with the effects of abuse; an elderly adult who now uses a wheelchair and lives with the vestiges of polio; or a veteran regaining life’s balance while recovering from an amputation, brain injury or post traumatic stress disorder. NVTRP helps to build and focus on students’ abilities, rather than disabilities by providing highquality therapeutic riding and hippotherapy. For over thirty years NVTRP has helped riders to recognize the unexpected potential in their lives. Students improve their fitness level and mobility through our programs by gaining core strength, muscle control and balance. Working closely with horses and volunteers inspires students to build self-esteem and further socialization, and also helps to provide both students and their families with a sense of community and belonging.

10

CONTINUED NVTRP is accredited and nationally recognized by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Int’l). Lessons are taught by PATH Intl. Certified Riding Instructors who are assisted by up to three volunteers per rider. This type of structure and supervision enables riders to participate in a challenging, physically active sport that gives them confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Lessons at NVTRP are diverse and include instruction in riding skills, exercises, trail rides, and games, while also focusing on grooming and horse care. This unique riding opportunity helps students to achieve an enriched quality of life while overcoming physical, mental, and emotional obstacles.

POLO EQUIPMENT

BASIC POLO TERMS Chukker (period): There are traditionally six chukkers in a polo game, each lasting seven minutes plus up to 30 seconds in overtime. If, during the 30 seconds the ball hits the sideboards or goes out of bounds, or if the umpire blows his whistle, the chukker is over. There is no overtime at the end of the sixth chukker unless the score is tied, at which time a seventh period will be played. A player returns to each chukker on a different horse, although he may rest one for a chukker or two, and play him again. Goal: Any time a ball crosses the line between the goal posts, it is considered a goal regardless of whether a horse or a mallet cause the ball to go through. In order to equalize wind and turf conditions, the teams change sides after each goal scored. Hook: A player may spoil another’s shot by putting his mallet in the way of the striking player. A cross hook occurs when the player reaches over his opponent’s mount in an attempt to hook; this is considered a foul. Knock-In: Should a team in an offensive drive hit the ball across the opponent’s backline, the defending team resumes the game with a free hit from its backline. no timeout is allowed for knock-ins. Penalty: A free hit toward the goal from a set distance. The severity of the foul committed determines what penalty will be awarded. The range is as follows: 1. An automatic goal 2. A free hit from 30 yards to an undefended goal. 3. A free hit from 40 yards to an undefended goal. 4. A free hit from 60 yards to an undefended goal. 5. A free hit from the point of infraction or from midfield. 6. Safety: When a defending player hits the ball across his own backline; the other team is awarded a free hit 60 yards from the backline with the ball placed at the same distance from the sideline as when it went out. Polo Ponies: There is no height limit for the horses although most are between 15 and 15.3 hands. The horses are usually five to twenty years old, with the best polo ponies of the thoroughbred blood. Each player uses an average of six horses per match and rides a different one in each chukker.
