Frontlist: Fiction & Literature Lamb in His Bosom Caroline Miller

PB: $16.95 / 978-1-56145-601-7 5-1/2 x 8 / 384 pages Territory: world All rights available except France, China Caroline Miller was born in 1903. After her marriage, she began traveling through rural south Georgia, interviewing the people she met and planning a novel; as she had not attended college, her husband taught her about literature. “He was my college,” she said. In 1934, she won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel with LAMB IN HIS BOSOM, originally published by Harper. Her second novel, LEBANON, was published in 1944. Caroline Miller died in 1992.

1934 Pulitzer Prize for the Novel This 1934 Pulitzer Prize winner tells the story of a pair of young newlyweds in antebellum rural Georgia. “Your book is undoubtedly the greatest that ever came out of the South about Southern people and it is my favorite book.” —Margaret Mitchell, in a letter to Caroline Miller “It has a wonderful freshness about it; not simply the freshness of a new writer, but the freshness of a new world. . . A wonderfully large and vital picture.” —The New York Times

4

LAMB IN HIS BOSOM was the first novel by a Georgia author to win a Pulitzer Prize. It was soon followed by Margaret Mitchell’s GONE WITH THE WIND. In fact, Miller’s novel was largely responsible for the discovery of GONE WITH THE WIND; after reading LAMB, Macmillan editor Harold S. Latham sought out other southern novels and authors, and found Margaret Mitchell. LAMB IN HIS BOSOM is a transcendent story centered on the life of a small backwoods family in southern Georgia. Beginning two decades before the Civil War and ending as the men return home from battle, Caroline Miller’s classic follows the story of Cean Smith and her family as they struggle to build their lives among the poor settlers of the Georgia backwoods—people who never owned a slave nor planned to fight a war. Richly authentic and lyrically descriptive, LAMB IN HIS BOSOM pays poignant tribute to a woman’s life lived on the line between the nature outside her and the nature within.

Marianne Walker

PB: $22.00 / 978-1-56145-617-8 6-1/8 x 9-1/4 / 608 pages 60 black & white photographs Territory: world All rights available except for Japan Marianne Walker has written for the New York Times Book Review and the Louisville Courier-Journal. She is professor emeritus at the University of Kentucky/Henderson Community College. She lives in Kentucky.

Based on previously unpublished letters and extensive interviews, this intriguing biography reveals the devoted marriage and fascinating partnership behind the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. In exposing the private side of this twenty-four-year marriage, author Marianne Walker confirms a long-suspected truth: GONE WITH THE WIND might have never been written were it not for Margaret Mitchell’s husband, John Marsh. He was Peggy’s best friend and constant champion, and he became her editor, proofreader, researcher, business manager, and the inspiration and motivation behind her writing. Lively extracts from Mitchell’s and Marsh’s letters to family and friends describe the stormy years of their courtship, their bohemian lifestyle as a young married couple, the arduous but fulfilling years when Mitchell was writing her famous novel, the thrill of its literary success, and the excitement of the making of the movie. Drawing on years of meticulous research, Marianne Walker details the intimate and moving love story between a husband and wife, and between a writer and her editor.

“…a moving love story of a symbiotic union that lasted 24 years. A remarkable piece of detective work.” —Publishers Weekly “It could be a Southern romance novel except for one thing; it’s true. marianne Walker has carefully documented the marriage that yielded the most successful old South love story ever.” —Associated Press

Frontlist: Fiction & Literature With All my might An Autobiography Erskine Caldwell

PB: $16.95 / 978-1-56145-665-9 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 / 344 pages Territory: U.S. & Canada Rights: McIntosh & Otis Erskine Caldwell was the author of twentyfive novels, including GOD'S LITTLE ACRE and TOBACCO ROAD. His books have sold eighty million copies and were translated into forty-three languages. He died in 1987.

“His struggle for understanding is graphically described in his mesmerizing autobiography, written with the artistry that marks his works.” —Publishers Weekly

6

In this forthright and unapologetic autobiography, esteemed author Erskine Caldwell recounts his personal and literary battles. In 1932, Erskine Caldwell’s first novel, TOBACCO ROAD, was the center of controversy. Some critics condemned the book; others considered it to be the work of a genius. Today Caldwell’s fifty-plus books have sold more than 80 million copies worldwide, and his stature as a writer has been firmly established. In WITH ALL MY MIGHT, Caldwell tells about his work as a cotton picker, stagehand, professional football player, and war correspondent for Life magazine during World War II. He describes his four marriages (including his much-publicized divorce from photographer Margaret Bourke-White). He writes of the sacrifices he made and the rejections he suffered during the years he was struggling to have his work published. In his own unique style, Erskine Caldwell shares his perspective on a life as full and interesting as any he ever dreamed up for his characters.

Health & Self-Help #5

Shoulder Abductions

Why this exercise? This exercise strengthens the muscles that enable you to lift your arms to the side. It will improve your ability to carry objects and will develop and define the muscles on the sides of your shoulders.

1. Sit in a supportive, armless chair, keeping your stomach and chin tucked in so that your back and neck are well aligned. Hold the weights at your sides with your arms straight, your palms facing the chair, and your thumbs facing forward. Breathe in (photo 1).

2. As you breathe out, raise your arms out to the side until they are at shoulder height. Keep your elbows soft or slightly bent (photo 2).

3. Slowly lower the weights to the starting position as you breathe in.

4. Do 1 to 2 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions of this exercise.

5. Perform this exercise 3 times a week, every other day.
