No one in the town of Bonnyripple ever kept a grudge. No one, that is, except old Cornelius, the Grudge Keeper. The townspeople of Bonnyripple count on Cornelius to file away their tiffs and huffs, squabbles and snits. But when a storm flings the people together and their grudges to the wind, will the Grudge Keeper be out of a job? This timely and entertaining story is beautifully conveyed through Rockliff’s witty wordplay and Wheeler’s elegant illustrations.

Claude lives in his house with two people who are too tall to fit on this page. They are called Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes, and they both have very shiny shoes and neat ankles. At half past eight on the dot, Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes say, “Be a good boy, Claude. We’ll see you later!” And off they pop to work. Once the front door has closed behind them, Claude leaps out of bed. He puts his beret on his head and fishes his best friend, Sir Bobblysock, out from under the blankets. It is time for an adventure! Where will Claude and Sir Bobblysock go next? In the same series

March • Middle Reader The screen had fallen off the window. There was nothing between the cats and Mrs. Lapidus’s dog Lovey-Doodle. Ginger barked and pulled on the leash until she was standing up on her hind legs. I held on like I was riding a bucking bronco. She strained and gasped for a second, and then all of a sudden, the snap on her collar unhooked. She took off, leaving me holding an empty leash. When Ginger realized nothing was holding her back, she lowered her head and headed for the window. About three feet from the bushes she leapt into the air, straight toward the cats. Lovey-Doodle froze. You’d think a cat being chased by a flying dog would run under a couch or up onto a shelf somewhere out of reach. That’d be the smart thing to do if you were a cat. But instead of leaping back into the house, these cats jumped out the window and sailed over the bushes. Ali stood at the edge of the Marshall property. She was about to commit
a felony. Or was trespassing only a misdemeanor? It didn’t matter. Once she crossed onto the Marshall place, she was setting herself up for trouble.
“What now?” Ali jumped when her voice came out ten times louder than
intended. The neighbor’s dogs barked and both girls dropped to a crouch.
Cara whispered, “I don’t know exactly. This sounded a lot easier when
we talked about it today.…”
“What? I thought you had a plan!”
They slipped inside the barn. Ali listened for the sound of someone
coming after them, but all she could hear was the pounding of her heart and her gasping breath.
The dogs quieted and Ali could hear the chirp of crickets again. Her
breathing slowed and her heartbeat returned to near normal. Then her sense of smell kicked in and she grimaced. The barn stank like it hadn’t been cleaned in ages.
“They’re here!” Cara clicked on her flashlight and a small beam of light
cut through the darkness. The girls crept forward toward the large box stall.
“Oh my gosh!” Ali stared in horror at the two horses, who were
pathetically thin and covered in their own filth. Cara’s flashlight revealed empty water tubs standing on their sides. There wasn’t a scrap of food in sight.
If things looked this bad in the small beam of light, how much worse
would the situation be in the broad light of day?
