PROCESS PUARL was tasked with creating a design vision for the Arthur Hotel by a local developer, Craig Weicker, of GSV LLC. Work is currently underway to renovate the existing buildling into micro-units for young professionals with unique shared amenities. Color, light, space planning, and programming were emphasized as affordable high-impact strategies to create a unique place. In Fall 2013, the team collected documentation of the existing building and interior changes that are currently being constructed according to drawings done by the architect of record. Site visits were done to collect photo documentaion of the project in its current state. The PUARL team created a digital and large scale physical model to explore the design possibilities of the Arthur Hotel, which was used in early winter term, a quick design charrette was held to “crowdsource” a variety of student designs. Each idea focused on a single concept for a particular space at the urban, building, and detail scale. Many urban schemes focused on the Trimet-owned turnaround lot directly across from the hotel. Going forward, PUARL is focusing and developing these concepts into a cohesive whole, including branding and website concepts. Meetings with Trimet, Momo (a bar next door), and historic research on the Hotel’s evolution are also planned for phase two of the project. PUARL

Moving the bicycle storage from the basement to the exterior northern facade provides a number of benefits to the project, freeing up over 1000 sqft of dinning, lounge and movie area. The system of storage sends a signal to neighbors and the city about how the residents of this building choose move about the city . Velominck Amsterdam IBA Engineers Here’s how it’d work. When you arrive at your destination, you find a Velominck station and swipe a transport card a little like one of London’s Oyster cards against a terminal so it knows who you are. A door opens, and you clip your bike into a robotic arm, which then pulls it up a transparent elevator to the roof. It can then be safely stored there until the owner returns and swipes the card again -- which summons the bike down from the rooftop. http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-06/01/velominck-bikes-on-rooftops

Basement Hallway Justin Sant, Richard Nelson & Erica Thompson Instead of hiding the intricate network of pipes along the basement ceiling, we propose working with the aesthetic of the pipes, adding more cylindrical elements of various radii, making a complete, dynamic, undulating ceiling plane. The pipes themselves will blend in and become part of the new ceiling. The walls can utilize a reddish composite wood paneling system (8’) with wave-like CNC fabricated grooves. LED lights shine down and up at the top and bottom edges of the panel, accentuating the texture of the material and giving the hallway a perception of accentuated height in a previously compacted space.

Reservable Lounge Justin Sant, Richard Nelson & Erica Thompson The lounge space below the lobby can become a reservable lounge, where residents sign up to use the room to host parties, sell items, work on projects, etc. The sliding door can utilize a translucent glass that can indicate occupancy to passerbys while still maintaining a basic level of privacy. The roller system displayed here is based off work done by Krown Lab, a local company to Portland who designs door hardware. A new flooring material like cork can soften the floor, make it cozier, and open it up to activities like dancing, yoga and more. A new offset dropped ceiling with an occulus can distrubute indirect lighting, and a lighter, warmer paint color or wood veneer can maximize daylight and add PUARL

URBAN DESIGN Cian Bouma and Kaeli Nolte

For the Turn-Around Park to become both more attractive for urban residency as well as a catalyst for other generative growth in the surrounding neighborhood, we are proposing several changes. On the larger scale, we propose the addtion of 3 bike lanes on the surrounding streets and a strong establishment of tree plantings on the East-West streets. This connects the park to Pioneer plaza and the river while also making the neighborhood more bike friendly. In the park, we are propsing the removal of 2 of the 3 turn around tracks, adding food carts, two bike shelters, and a landscaped sculpture feature through the area. The landscape sculpture will emphasize the slope and create spaces for people to gather and climb upon. These pieces will also work as a rain water cleaning feature though the use of bioswale planters. These planters traverse the park into a new walkway that will break up the current parking lot next to the park. We hope the site will not only become a more popular day spot, but also serve as an example for how to breakup the large areas of concrete in the area. Green Space

Fourth Floor Hallway Cian Bouma & Kaeli Nolte The intention of our design for this space was to create a more dynamic and warm experience as one travels down the hallway. We aimed to introduce natural light through a series of clerestory windows along the length of the hallway. The wall finishes will be an off white paint to increase the brightness of the spaces and enhance the light reflection off the wall. The wood finishes on the lower half of one wall will be replaced with newer, light wood planks. Curving up the northern wall and onto the ceiling is a series of wood panels that give the hallway a more asymmetrical and unique feeling.

Talisa Shevavesh & Jenna Pairolero Urban Architecture Charette - The Arthur Arch585 | Hajo Neis | W2014 Our proposal for the historic Arthur Hotel developed through the idea to design less and express more. The original character of the building reveals stunning historic elements such as the detail in the plaster molding. This spectacular detail demonstrates the building’s architectural history and is attractive to many young professionals today. Additionally, the proximity to many transit options makes this area a multi-modal hub. The proposed concept for this renovation is SHOWCASING PORTLAND. The originality of the building is expressed through its architectural form and this is coupled with a fresh modern appearance through the interiors. The public spaces will exhibit Portland’s transit history through photographs and artwork. The building has played an important role through history and through the renovation more of it will be revealed. This concept is embedded in all scales of design, urban, building, and detail.

This scale of design includes the biggest design moves. Although it is theoretical, it includes many ideas that would provide a fluid concept throughout all scales. The largest idea is to move the Max transit turn-around to the Jeld-Wen Field stop. This move would open up the square directly across the street. The proposal for this area would be to create a public square and transit center. The public square would include a tree canopy, graphic transit related signage, and seating. Directly adjacent to the square, we propose a transit center. The center’s program would include an information desk, offices, and a small gallery. The gallery would exhibit a small collection of transit related work. The final element to include in the urban plan is the continuation of tree canopy along Morrison and Yamhill. This would continue the downtown aesthetic to include the Arthur block.

Changes to the building scale were minimal. The building façade expresses the historic character of the building spectacularly. The detail in the architectural form provides a foundation for the plaster moldings on the interiors. In this proposal, the canopy over the entrance is kept in tact. The canopy provides protection from the elements and serves as an ornate indicator for the entry of the building. The canopy is updated with unique lit signage. The underside of the canopy exhibits a lit painted acrylic surface that will refract light and add a unique touch to the exterior of the building. This scale is important in beginning the apartment building’s experience through the spaces.

ENTRY LOBBY: The original building is in incredible shape and we wanted to keep many of the existing elements from it. The plaster molding is updated with a bright white paint. The walls will be painted with a varied palette of blues, greens, and purples. This is a rather loud palette and it will be toned down with minimalist furnishings. The wood floors will need small repairs to make it suitable for apartment living. The biggest addition to this space is the window seat and wall shelving. Also, the mailboxes will be moved into this space to encourage movement and use of the lobby. HALLWAY: The hallways will continue the lobby aesthetic. The plaster moldings will be again painted a bight white and the walls painted a palette of blues, greens, and purples. The transom panels will be a feature on the wall, including lit signage as a continuation from the front canopy. The carpet will be removed to exhibit the wood flooring and to continue this space fluidly from the lobby. Modern exposed lighting will be employed in the hallway to brighten up the space while keeping the same feeling throughout the building. PUARL

URBAN SCALE Tim Dudley

Inspired by the existing concrete Deco style lightposts, as well as the old Third St. Lightway, this urban scale scheme seeks to preserve a corner of the open space as a public plaza. Food carts and coffeeshops can use this space as common seating - similar to SW Ankeny Alley. The north half of the lot is a residential building in scale and style with the surrounding structures. The structural expression of this building matches the grid created by the original lightposts. A semi-private terrace for residents is created over the single storey retail portion along the south.

ENTRY / BASEMENT Tim Dudley

This scheme attempts to connect the main floor entry sequence to the basement lounge space by removing part of the floorplate separating them. This allows natural light into the basement, creating a more inviting space that can be used as a communal lounge. This move creates a visual connection to the basement space from the main entrance door and main floor lobby, increasing awareness of the basement space and encouraging vertical interaction between residents. Material choices also help to unify the two rooms. A vertical wood wall, with a lighting installation spans between the floors. Also, the ballustrade of thin steel rods continues into the basement, becoming part of the built-in lounge furniture.
