fjdm’s current 5th floor window displays take you into the world of pop culture Written & Photographed by Joseph Guevara
FIDM’s 5th floor window displayes never dissapoint. The
current window displays that line that walls feature various influences from pop culture. Each one showcases one pop culture is all about. From Andy Warhol’s famous Marilyn Monroe paintings, to Coca Cola cans, Campbells soup cans, comic book inspired signs, and even a McDonald’s happy meal box covered in glitter. Each window uses very bright and bold colors that just pop!
Students at FIDM work so hard to make these amazing
window displays. Everytime, the window displays never dissapoint and they always have such an amazing theme. They’ve done the periodic elements, colors, and flowers. But what a better choice for this quarter than pop culture! Who isn’t influenced by it? So if you haven’t seen the 5th floor window dispkays, head on over to FIDM and check them out.

U
nless you’ve been living under a rock all season long, chances are by now you already know about the Jonas Brothers breakup that happened earlier this
fall. The news was everywhere-I mean, it basically broke the internet-and for good reason. Not only was the announcement a shock in general, but the boys were just finishing up a huge Fashion Week whirlwind, where they hit up shows and parties and basically reminded everyone exactly why the ex-Disney trio has staying power. Which made the timing of the whole thing even more unexpected. They cancelled their fall tour and deleted their Twitter in early October, but before all that went down? We got sushi. And yeah, it was pretty fun. Just as Fashion Week was wrapping up, I went out for dinner with Kevin, Joe and Nick in Soho, along with Guapo’s Editorin-Chief Joseph Guevara and Guapo’s fashion assistant Gaby Maciel. Although the Jonas Brothers were still very much a band then, the guys were obviously very different. From the get-go it’s clear that Kevin is the guy to talk to about tech stuff. Nick filled us in on his acting gigs and 21st birthday plans, and Joe talked fashion--and ordered sushi for everyone, since he’s the biggest foodie of the bunch. While they’re all super polite and friendly and everything that you’d hope a band crush would be, it’s clear that these three have varied interests, and just hearing about their schedules--Nick was set to go to Hawaii to film Hawaii Five-O and Kevin was preparing for the birth of his baby-you sort of wondered how they’d be able to do everything at the same time. Now the breakup makes a lot more sense, right? And after chilling with them at dinner, we got to hang out with Joe even more for the new issue of Guapo Guys. In the story, the middle Jonas brother fills everyone in on exactly what went down last fall and why he’s pumped to do his own thing. He told Baker that he’s working on a solo music career (he likes hip-hop, indie, dance music, and pop) and is getting serious about acting. And all this isn’t even touching on his fashion cred, which, judging from his photoshoot alone, he’s got in spades. Earlier this year, Joe Jonas almost fell into a life of crime. On a sunny May afternoon in Los Angeles, the middle Jonas Brother and I are wandering through “Art in the Streets,” Jeffrey Deitch’s massive street-art extravaganza at the Museum of Contemporary Art. He’s telling me about his fascination with the work of Banksy and Mr. Brainwash when we come upon a small piece, nearly hidden over a doorway, by Invader, the French artist known for his tile mosaics depicting characters from the old-school video game, Space Invader. “Oh, his stuff is great,” Jonas says, snapping a picture with his iPhone. Then this Disney Channel superstar tells me about the night a few months ago that he and his friends came this close to stealing an Invader piece from its perch on the side of a Melrose Avenue apartment building. “We didn’t take it, though,” Jonas adds, “since we figured if we got caught the cops might

pretty much created his own lane.” A space for himself is exactly what Jonas is after these days, in the professional sense as well as the personal: After sharing homes with his family and with friends, he’s currently living alone for the first time, in a Hollywood high-rise near the Jonas organization’s corporate headquarters. (In addition to music, these guys are involved in TV, movies, merchandise, you name it.) At MOCA, when we see an installation piece littered with empty Tecate cans, Jonas laughs knowingly, admitting how relieved he is to finally not have roommates. Steering a black Audi convertible down Sunset Boulevard on our way to the museum, Jonas says he didn’t hit upon Fastlife’s style right off the bat. He started out working in a Michael Bublé vein, which satisfied the singer in Jonas but not the songwriter. “I don’t mean to name-drop,” he says, “but about a year-and-a-half ago I met Bono, and he told me to write music that was really honest, to not be afraid to go there.” Still, he’s quick to clarify that the emphasis on Fastlife hasn’t resulted in a loosening of family ties. Indeed, the Jonases recently vacationed together in Hawaii, where Nick and Joe somehow ended up having lunch with Mick Fleetwood. “My brothers and I, we’re like each other’s best friends,” Joe says, “and I think it’s that foundation that makes me feel like I can really do this on my own for a second.” From sold out shows.... to runway shows. Joe Jonas has got an amazing voice and definely has an amazing fashion sense. Since breaking up with his brothers, Joe has released his solo album “Fastlife”, Joe has gone to do runway shows all over the world. 24

He feels most comfortable in front of a camera where he’s able to show his personality best. He doesn’t like to take himself too seriously, where’s the fun in that? His contagious big, cheesy smile can brighten literally any room. The reason he chose being a contestant on ANTM rather than going a traditional modeling route was simple. The benefits of being on a show with Tyra Banks, being able to travel the world, and meet incredible minds and celebrities like Katy Perry, Johnny Wujek and many more, is a bargain you cannot pass up. It shot his modeling career straight into the fast lane, and he’s been busy booking deals ever since. He shares with Annex Mag what a good day on set looks like, “When theirs food for sure. No, but in all honesty, a great day on set is when everyone is on point. Everyone knows their job and it all flows so naturally because everyone’s work ethic is synonymous. I also love just having conversations with the team. I like it when we are able to talk about more than just fashion. That’s a good day on set: food, being on top of your game, good conversation. That’s it.” He’s far from where he once was, but not yet where he wants to be. He dreams of someday soon modeling for brands like Dsquared2, Diesel, and Givenchy. America’s Next Top Model’s male model Marvin Cortes finished the twentieth season as the runner-up during The CW’s finale broadcast of the first-ever Guys & Girls edition. Marvin, a 6’ 1” 20-year-old sales associate from Bronx, NY, was defeated by Jourdan Miller, a 6’ 0” unemployed 19-yearold from Bend, OR, after Top Model judges Tyra Banks, Kelly Cutrone and Rob Evans evaluated and scored both contestants’ entire body of work throughout the course of the season.
