ABOUT Jordan Dobrowski I grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA and was always talented and obsessed with various forms of art including drawing, painting, and dancing. Growing up I traveled to plenty of different places with my family, which led to my interest in moving across the country to Los Angeles to study at FIDM. I specifically chose graphic design because it is a mixture of form and function allowing me to use my art skills, mathematic and logic skills, the things that I have continued to excel at most. Now that I am halfway through my classes for graphic design classes, I have realized that the occupation is perfect for me since it provides a problem that needs a solution, yet allows me to be creative with it. Over the past nine months I have developed my own style through learning about the history of design and researching current designs and designers. Right now I like to keep my designs extremely clean and simple. I tend to call my designs and myself minimalistic, but of course I expect my style to grow and change as I learn more at FIDM and in the industry in the future.

Character S T U D Y

The letter W was added to the Latin alphabet at the 23rd letter of the set. Germany originally used wrote the letter <VV> which translated to <uu> in that language. By the eighth century, early English and High German writers were making the distinction between the <VV> and <uu>. From, the <uu> diagraph is where the name of the W (“double u”) derives. In addition, the W is the only letter of the English language that includes more than one syllable. Gradually, people that wrote the letter W shifted from using otwo Vs next to each other to two Vs touching and connecting, thus forming the entire character. In Europe, the W is only used in the central western countries, and in some

of those countries the letter is used to represent the W and the U sounds. Specifically, the English language uses plenty of words starting with W where the letter is silent and an R follows and only the R is pronounced. Such words include: wrap, write, wrinkle, wroth, wreck, etc. The W is used in website URLs as a prefix (www.) and has consequently been pronounced “dub-u dub-u dub-u” for shortening. The 42nd U.S. President George W. Bush has also nicknamed the letter “dubya” due to his dialect from the south. The letter is also the name of a high fashion magazine standing for the word “women” where the magazine uses the character as its title and logo.
