BEST FRENCH FRIES IN LA
A history on animal style In N Out french fries French fries (American English) or frites, chips, fries, finger chips,or French-fried potatoes are batons of deep-fried potato. In the United States and most of Canada, the term fries refers to any elongated pieces of fried potatoes, while in the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand, long, thinly cut elongated strips of fried potatoes are sometimes called shoestring to distinguish them from the more thickly cut strips called chips. French fries are served hot, either soft or crispy, and generally eaten as part of lunch or dinner, or on their own as a snack, and they commonly appear on the menus of fast food restaurants. French fries are generally salted and are often served with ketchup; in many countries they are topped instead with other condiments or toppings, including vinegar, mayonnaise, or other local specialties. Fries can also
be topped more elaborately, as in the dishes of poutine and chili cheese fries. Sometimes, fries are made with sweet potatoes instead of potatoes, are baked instead of fried, or are cut into unusual shapes. Fries made with ordinary potatoes are sometimes baked as well. Although French fries were already a popular dish in most British commonwealth countries, the thin style of French fries has been popularized worldwide in part by the large American fast-food chains, such as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s.[citation needed] Pre-made French fries have been available for home cooking since the 1960s, usually having been pre-fried (or sometimes baked), frozen and placed in a sealed plastic bag. Some later varieties of French fries are battered and breaded, and many fast-food chains in the U.S. dust the potatoes with kashi, dextrin, and other flavor coatings for crispier fries

GROUP A
lternately riveting and wearying, up-to-the-minute relevant as well as selfmythologizingly self-indulgent — as much of a heroic origins story as anything out of the Marvel factory — “Straight Outta Compton” ends up juggling more story lines and moods than it can handle. It took 13 years to reach
the screen, required the efforts of four credited writers and runs a meandering 2 hours and 22 minutes, so it might be expected that “Straight Outta Compton” is all over the map, and it is.contend with a panoply of conflicting pressures. This was perhaps inevitable. To make a film version of the story of N.W.A, the massively influential Comptonspawned rap group whose full name and best known song are
still too incendiary for a family newspaper to publish, director F. Gary Gray had to contend with a panoply of conflicting pressures. Those include tending to both the hard-core image of the group (lots of weapons, lots more partially clothed women) and the personal agendas of former band members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre and Tomica Woods-Wright, the widow of Eazy-E, all of whom are hands-on executive producers.
And how do you handle potentially litigious characters like rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, who recently pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in an incident related to the film, and controversial ex-N.W.A manager Jerry Heller, who has already stated that on opening day “I will be there in the front row with my lawyer.” Given that the script (credited to Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff based on a story by S. Leigh Savidge & Alan Wenkus and Berloff) reflects all these swirling demands, it’s fortunate that director Gray has a history with the key players, having made music videos for both Dre and Cube and directing the latter’s Hollywood breakout, “Friday.” Gray sees to it that the film starts out strongly, bringing the kind of energy and anger against authority that lit up N.W.A’s music to what is in truth a surprisingly familiar tale. For it’s ironic that the most effective parts of “Straight Outta Compton” are its most standard. This story of a group of disadvantaged but talented young men from the same neighborhood fighting their way out of straitened circumstances to international pop music stardom has in outline a lot in common with the saga of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons as related in “Jersey Boys” — though partisans of neither project will be happy with the comparison.

Straight Outta Compton has received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 90%, based on 124 reviews, with an average rating of 7.5/10. The site’s consensus reads, “Straight Outta Compton is a biopic that’s built to last, thanks to F. Gary Gray’s confident direction and engaging performances from a solid cast.” On Metacritic, it has a score of 73 out of 100, based on 39 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews”. On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of “A” on an A+ to F scale. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded the film 3.5 stars out of 4, calling the film “enthralling” and “energized”, praising the cast for delivering “strong, memorable work that transcends mere imitation.” He called the film “one of the better musical biopics of the last 20 years.” Lou Lumenick of the the New York Post, also awarding the film a 3.5/4, called it “one of the summer’s most entertaining and provocative movies”, finding it “surprisingly candid” about the negatives in N.W.A.’s career for a film produced by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre themselves. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone, again giving the film 3.5 out of 4 stars, also praised the film for its honesty in its portrayal of the group and praised Jackson’s performance as Ice Cube, as well as the supporting cast, finding Mitchell’s Eazy-E “award-caliber”. However, he did wish that the film elaborated more on the group’s troubles involving misogyny, homophobia and the media. Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street
Journal found the group’s musical performances to be “far and away the most appealing parts of the picture.” However, he criticized the film for slowing down towards the end, particularly when it gets “ploddingly sentimental” once it focuses on the decline and death of Eazy-E.
21
Scott Foundas of Variety praised director Gray for taking familiar biopic paces and bringing a “richness of observation to the table that transcends cliche.” He also praised the film for its “high but never overindulgent” style and the attention to detail in the production, ranging from the “exhaustively researched” screenplay to the “meticulous care” involved in assembling the film’s soundtrack. He stated, “if “Compton” is undeniably of the moment, it’s also timeless in its depiction of how artists and writers transform the world around them into angry, profane, vibrant and singular personal expression.” Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune stated, “Straight Outta Compton at its best evokes the heady atmosphere of Crenshaw Boulevard and what the group’s success meant to Compton, and vice versa. When the songs themselves take center stage the movie works. What remains in the
22
wings constitutes another, fuller story.” In a polarized review, Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times felt that the film attempted to take on more storylines than it could handle, also criticizing how bloated it becomes towards the end regarding Heller, though he did praise Giamatti’s performance. Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian also criticized the film’s second half for being “cheesy” and “[playing] it too safe”. Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of The A.V. Club gave the film a C, feeling it had to rely on its timeliness for its thematic weight, and saying the film “simplifies N.W.A.’s arc to a gangster-movie knock-off about three friends from way back when who are driven apart by bad influences.” The Washington Post noted the film’s “lack of interest in process and personality” compared to the concurrently-released music biopic Love & Mercy, writing: “it’s no contest as to which Giamatti
picture is the better depiction of the actual music-making process.” According to a poll conducted by Rentrak during the film’s opening weekend, audiences gave the film a full 5 out of 5 stars, a rare achievement for any film, with most box office mega-hits usually rated at between 4 or 4.5 stars in the previous Rentrak polls. The film is very popular among the female moviegoers, with 74% of the male and 76% of the female audience giving the film a definite recommend – very high marks in Rentrak. The subject matter and plot were the primary reasons given by 38% of moviegoers for coming out to see Straight Outta Compton.

W
hat do Jean Genet, Jimmy Durante, Brigitte Bardot, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jacques Cousteau, Andy Warhol, and Lena Horne have in common? They were a few of the many personalities caught on film by photographer Richard Avedon. For more than fifty years, Richard Avedon’s portraits have filled the pages of the country’s finest magazines. His stark imagery and brilliant insight into his subjects’ characters has made him one of the premier American portrait photographers. Born in New York in 1923, Richard Avedon dropped out of high school and joined the Merchant Marine’s photographic section. Upon his return in 1944, he found a job as a photographer in a department store. Within two years he had been “found” by an art director at Harper’s Bazaar and was producing work for them as well as Vogue, Look, and a number of other magazines. During the early years, Avedon made his living primarily through work in advertising. His real passion, however, was the portrait and its ability to express the essence of its subject.
26
“All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.” –Richard Avedon
A
s Avedon’s notoriety grew, so did the opportunities to meet and photograph celebrities from a broad range of disciplines. Avedon’s ability to present personal views of public figures, who were otherwise distant and inaccessible, was immediately recognized by the public and the celebrities themselves. Many sought out Avedon for their most public images. His artistic style brought a sense of sophistication and authority to the portraits. More than anything, it is Avedon’s ability to set his subjects at ease that helps him create true, intimate, and lasting photographs.
T
hroughout his career Avedon has maintained a unique style all his own. Famous for their minimalism, Avedon portraits are often well lit and in front of white backdrops. When printed, the images regularly contain the dark outline of the film in which the image was framed. Within the minimalism of his empty studio, Avedon’s subjects move freely, and it is this movement which brings a sense of spontaneity to the images. Often containing only a portion of the person being photographed, the images seem intimate in their imperfection. While many photographers are interested in either catching a moment in time or preparing a formal image, Avedon has found a way to do both.
29
B
eyond his work in the magazine industry, Avedon has collaborated on a number of books of portraits. In 1959 he worked with Truman Capote on a book that documented some of the most famous and important people of the century. Observations included images of Buster Keaton, Gloria Vanderbilt, Pablo Picasso, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mae West. Around this same time he began
30
a series of images of patients in mental hospitals. Replacing the controlled environment of the studio with that of the hospital he was able to recreate the genius of his other portraits with non-celebrities. The brutal reality of the lives of the insane was a bold contrast to his other work. Years later he would again drift from his celebrity portraits with a series of studio images of drifters, carnival workers, and working class Americans.
T
hroughout the 1960s Avedon continued to work for Harper’s Bazaar and in 1974 he collaborated with James Baldwin on the book Nothing Personal. Having met in New York in 1943, Baldwin and Avedon were friends and collaborators for more than thirty years. For all of the 1970s and 1980s Avedon continued working for Vogue magazine, where he would take some of the most famous portraits of the decades. In 1992 he became the first staff photographer for The New Yorker, and two years later
the Whitney Museum brought together fifty years of his work in the retrospective, “Richard Avedon: Evidence”. He was voted one of the ten greatest photographers in the world by Popular Photography magazine, and in 1989 received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London. Today, his pictures continue to bring us a closer, more intimate view of the great and the famous. Avedon died on October 1st, 2004.

WESTERN WARRIORS
A rivalry as old as time itself
Since the 1916 formation of the Pacific Coast Conference, which the Pac-12 claims as part of its history, USC has won or shared 37 conference titles and UCLA has won or shared 17 titles. Washington is third in overall conference titles with 15. Since the 1959 season, when the Pac-12 was formed as the Athletic Association of Western Universities, through the 2007 season, the schools have won or shared 33 of the 48 conference titles. USC has won 17 championships outright, shared eight and gone to the Rose Bowl or BCS bowl 21 times. UCLA has won six championships outright, shared five and gone to the Rose Bowl eight times. The schools have shared the championship between them three times. In 2011, UCLA became the first
Pac-12 South Division champion while USC held the best record; the Trojans were ineligible for postseason play that year due to NCAA sanctions. Both teams have spoiled conference and national championship runs for the other. USC was a somewhat established national football power under Howard Jones and had begun a major rivalry with Notre Dame when UCLA joined the Pacific Coast Conference in 1929. Los Angeles Times sportswriter Braven Dyer predicted on the day of the first football meeting on September 28, 1929, "In years to come, this game will probably be one of the football spectacles of the West" USC dominated the early games (so much so, that after the first two games, the series was suspended for five years
and they did not play each other from 1931 to 1935) until UCLA established itself. By the late 1930s, star players such as Kenny Washington, Jackie Robinson, and Bob Waterfield enabled UCLA to be competitive. With the hiring of Hall of Fame Coach Henry "Red" Sanders, UCLA became the more dominant program in the 1950s with their one and only National Championship in 1954. A famous quote was attributed to Sanders regarding the rivalry, "Beating 'SC is not a matter of life or death, it's more important than that." But Sanders died suddenly of a heart attack, and shortly thereafter, one of the greatest colleges football coaches in NCAA history took over the struggling USC program. Upon the arrival of their new head coach John McKay (1960–1975), USC entered a new golden age in their storied history. During McKay's tenure, the Trojans won 8 conference titles, 5 Rose Bowls, produced two Heisman Trophy winners (Mike Garrett and O.J. Simpson) and won three National Championships (1962, 1967, and 1972) and shared one (1974). Against UCLA, McKay was tough to beat posting a 10–5–1 record against the Bruins between 1960 and 1975.
For most seasons from the mid-1960s to the end of the 1970s, the two schools were the top powers on the West Coast with USC usually holding the top spot. In the 15 Rose Bowls played from 1966 to 1980, USC or UCLA played in 12 of them. Even with the rise of Don James' Washington Huskies in the 1980s and early 90s, UCLA or USC still went to the Rose Bowl seven times between 1981 and 1995. In the 1990s, UCLA enjoyed an impressive 8-game winning streak against USC. The Bruin's unbeaten string ended in 1999 when the Trojans began their longest win streak, 7, against the Bruins, though 2 of those wins (2004, 2005) are now vacated, cutting the USC streak to just 5. This unprecedented dominance was the direct result of the hiring of Pete Carroll by USC in 2000. During Carroll's tenure (2001–2009 seasons), USC was virtually unbeatable against its two most heated rivals, UCLA and Notre Dame. The only game that UCLA beat a Pete Carroll coached team was the 13–9 win in 2006 at the Rose Bowl that kept USC out of the BCS Championship game and allowed the Bruins to keep the record for consecutive wins (8) in the rivalry.

TROJAN ARMY
The USC Trojans football program, established in 1888, represents the University of Southern California in college football. USC is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I FBS and the Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12). The Trojans are a football powerhouse, and have been throughout NCAA history, claiming 11 national championships. As of 2015, 493 Trojans have been taken in the National Football League draft, more than from any other university.
Rivalries UCLA
The crosstown rivals play each year for city bragging rights and the Victory Bell; and often for the right to go to the Rose Bowl. The UCLA rivalry tends to draw the focus of student supporters since many USC students have friends or family members attending “that other school” (of course, many UCLA students refer to their USC friends in the same manner) and many Southern California families are divided between Trojan Cardinal and Bruin Blue. USC leads the all-time series 46–31–7. Stanford is USC’s oldest rival, in a series that dates to 1905. In the early years of football on the West Coast, the power sat in the Bay Area with the Stanford-Cal rivalry and USC rose to challenge the two established programs. During the early and mid-20th century Stanford football occasionally enjoyed periods of great regional success on the gridiron. USC and Stanford, being the two private universities with major football teams on the west coast, naturally drew the ire of one another. During the early 2000s, however, Stanford had not maintained their earlier success and the rivalry had faded to many USC fans. The rivalry was renewed with the arrival of Jim Harbaugh at Stanford in 2007. Harbaugh defeated Carroll 2–1 in their three matchups with both victories occurring in the Coliseum. In

USC’s rivalry with UCLA is unusual in that they are one of a few pairs of Division I FBS programs that share a major city. Both are within the L.A. city limits, approximately 10 miles (16 km) apart. the 2009 meeting, USC sustained their worst loss in 43 years and surrendered the most points to an opponent, a record that would stand for three seasons. The game led the Los Angeles Times to declare that Stanford was “at the top of the USC ‘Must Kill’ list.”Harbaugh added another win in 2010 against Carroll’s successor Lane Kiffin before leaving after that season to become head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. STANFORD Stanford’s recent success against USC has continued under Harbaugh’s successor David Shaw, who defeated Kiffin in their two meetings (2011 and 2012), although USC has won the last two matchups (2013 and 2014). Of note is that USC’s 2014 win, which occurred at Stanford Stadium, snapped the Cardinal’s 17-game home win streak, which had dated back to 2011. All told, Stanford has defeated USC in 5 of the last 8 meetings, winning in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Overall, USC has mostly dominated as the Trojans lead the series record 61-29-3.
UC BERKELEY The University of California, Berkeley has had a rivalry
with USC since 1915. Cal has not defeated USC since 2003. The current record stands at 67-30-5. No team has lost to USC more times than California. In the mid-2000s, Cal had moderate success against USC, with USC going 4–1 against Cal: USC lost in triple overtime to California in 2003, USC won a close 2004 game 23–17, the 2006 game decided the Pac-10’s BCS berth, and USC winning 24-17 in a rainy 2007 contest. The rivalry regressed after 2007, with the resumption of lopsided double-digit USC victories: in 2008, USC shut down California’s offense to just 3 points, with a 17-3 Trojan victory; in 2009, USC once again held Cal’s offense to only 3 points, steamrolling to a 30-3 victory; the 2010 game was lopsided from the beginning, by halftime USC had scored 42, while Cal did not score at all, with this 42-0 halftime score tying the largest deficit at halftime in Cal’s history, and USC controlled the rest of the game, winning 48-14. Recently, USC has won 30-9, 27-9, 62-28, and 38-30 in 2011-2014 respectively. The Trojans have now won the past 11 meetings.
“PERFECT DAY” A "Perfect Day" (a phrase created by the school's football announcer Pete Arbogast) to any USC fan is a USC win coupled with losses by UCLA and Notre Dame. The last "Perfect Day" occurred on November 29, 2014, when USC beat Notre Dame and UCLA lost to Stanford. There have been 36 "Perfect Days" since 1960. An "Imperfect Day" is when either UCLA or Notre Dame have failed to lose.
FIGHT ON!
A phrase commonly used by Trojan fans to greet one another or show support for the team, which is borrowed from the fight song of the same name (i.e., "Fight On for ol' S.C./Our men Fight On to Victory..." The two finger "V" salute for Victory is often given in accompaniment. The term came from a LA Times article in regard to a USC vs. Stanford track meet. Though USC lost by a considerable amount, LA Times writer Owen Bird wrote that USC "Fought on like Trojans". Shortly after changing USC's team name from the "Fighting Methodists" to the "Trojans" in 1912, "Fight On" was taken as its slogan amongst fans.

Rose Bowl
The Rose Bowl is a National Historic Landmark located in Pasadena, California with an official capacity of 92,542. It has been the home football field for the UCLA Bruins since the 1982 season. The Bruins had played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum after joining the Pacific Coast Conference in 1928. The Coliseum is also the home of the rival USC Trojans. As the Coliseum is located across the street from the USC campus, Bruin officials long sought to move out from under the Trojans’ shadow. An on-campus facility was discussed, but UCLA’s location is not conducive to adequate traffic flow, and the campus lacks room for sufficient parking. There was an attempt to build a 44,000 seat stadium on campus, at the site where Drake Stadium eventually was built. However, the proposal was blocked by influential area residents, as well as other politicians. In addition, the Coliseum already was constructed by and is a facility of the State of California. When the Oakland Raiders became the Los Angeles Raiders, in 1982, and after arduous negotiations with the city of Pasadena, UCLA decided to move out of the Coliseum, relocating its home games to the Rose Bowl Stadium.[80] UCLA has participated in five Rose Bowl games since moving to the stadium, including the 1983 Rose Bowl at the end of the Bruins’ first season there. From 1919 to 1927, the Bruins (then known as the Cubs) used Moore Field at the Vermont Ave. campus of the “Southern Branch of the University of California.”

The UCLA athletic colors are "True Blue" and gold. The "True Blue" is a slightly darker shade than the previous powder blue worn by teams. In the early days of the school, UCLA had the same colors as the California Golden Bears: Yale Blue and California Gold.[83] Blue symbolized the ocean, while gold represented the state of California, known as the "Golden State". When football coach Red Sanders came to UCLA for the 1949 season he redesigned the football uniforms. The Yale Blue was changed to a lighter shade of blue. Sanders figured that the baby blue would look better on the field and in film. He would dub the baby blue uniform "Powderkeg blue", powder blue with an explosive kick. For the 1954 season, Sanders added the now familiar loop on the shoulders, the UCLA Stripe, to give an impression of motion.[86] The away uniforms became white, with a navy blue and gold shoulder stripe and gold pants. The helmets became gold. At times, beginning with the 1954 football season, the font for the numbers on the uniforms has been Clarendon typeface. Otherwise it has been block numerals. In the 1980s the uniform pants became yellow to look better in color publications, the jerseys a lighter blue, and the UCLA script was added to the helmets. In the 1990s, the uniform pants became gold again. In 2003, the True Blue colors were adopted.[82] The away uniforms got true blue shoulder stripes and numbers in 2006, but were replaced by navy blue again in 2010. In 2009, the Bruins wore a 1967 throwback uniform against Washington and USC, though against USC the team's normal helmet was worn.
