Welcome to Frozen! What a treat we have in store for you. You are the first — the very first in the world — to see this show before it goes to Broadway. And while that’s due in part to our longstanding relationship with Disney Theatricals, it’s also thanks to you, our committed fans. You are what has made Denver one of the top destinations for Broadway’s most exciting hits. Thank you for making this extraordinary debut in Denver possible. While you experience the subzero setting of Frozen, things are heating up for our 2017/18 season. We’re putting the final touches on the renovated Space Theatre, which opens with DCPA Theatre Company’s Macbeth. Off-Center is prepping another large-scale, off-site production — The Wild Party at Stanley Marketplace. We’ll welcome 18,000 PreK through third grade students to our DCPA Education production of The Snowy Day and Other Stories this fall. And our Broadway season officially opens with Something Rotten!, a musical comedy about the world’s first musical comedy! 2017/18 is gearing up to be a season for the record books. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge outgoing Chairman Daniel L. Ritchie’s leadership over the past 10 years. Dan helped us weather the economic downturn, pledged half a million dollars to kick-start a Challenge Campaign, contributed to new works, underwrote seasons and led us to become the largest non-profit theatre organization in the nation. As Dan steps down, we welcome Martin Semple as Chairman of the Board. Martin’s history with the DCPA goes back to its inception. He has been our lawyer, donor, founder of Directors Society, Trustee, President of our Bonfils Foundation and loyal fan. Along with Martin, two new Trustees join the board — retired cable industry exec June Travis and Denver Chief of Staff Alan Salazar, who serves as Mayor Michael Hancock’s Ex-Officio designee. THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES Do you cringe in the theatre because your child has ants in his pants? Pretend she’s someone else’s daughter when she dances in the aisle? Shrink down in your seat when he points and loudly asks, “Mommy, what’s that?” Well not anymore! Denver Center for the Performing Arts Education is launching its first Theatre for Young Audiences program. Designed especially for squirmers, dancers and inquisitive tykes alike, more than 18,000 PreK through third graders will be introduced to theatre — half of whom will attend with scholarship support. The Snowy Day and Other Stories by Caldecott-winning author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats will come to life in The Conservatory Theatre (Sep 21 – Nov 18) through both public performances and extensive student matinees. “It’s our goal to welcome as many children to this interactive, highly imaginative production as possible,” said Allison Watrous, Director of DCPA Education. “When we engage these early learners in the creative arts, we elevate academic achievement, inspire future leaders and cultivate a creative workforce. Caissie Levy and Patti Murin never imagined they would grow up to be princesses. “Not in a million years,” Levy said, just for emphasis. But there’s no question both Broadway stars have been living a fairy tale since they were cast to play Elsa and Anna in Disney’s Broadway-bound stage adaption of Frozen. “I am so proud to be a part of this company. I count my blessings every day,” Murin said in an exclusive interview just a week after rehearsals began for the pre-Broadway launch in Denver that runs from August 17 through October 1. “To be in this club is thrilling, to say the least,” added Levy. “And with each new day we have been working on it, that sense of giddiness and excitement has just grown deeper and deeper.” Both actors say the stage adaptation of Frozen will surprise people with its universal appeal to all audiences. “There is something for everybody,” Levy said. “We have discovered so many more layers to examine within this story that can only happen in the theatre. A lot of adult themes are explored. It’s not just for kids.” Murin added that adapting the 85-minute film into a full, two-act Broadway production with More than twice as much music gives the actors the opportunity to dig deeper into their characters’ storylines. “This is a complete show,” Murin said. “With the addition of so much new material, we have the freedom to expand and to go deeper than you are able to in a film.” To Director Michael

Grandage, it’s about emphasizing “the beating heart of the story,” she said. “I think what’s so brilliant about what the writers and Michael and (Choreographer) Rob Ashford are doing is that while they are using the film as a template, they are not trying to recreate what we saw on the screen for the stage,” Levy said. “This is not a replica of the movie. It’s a wholly new work of art. People who love the movie will want to buy a ticket to the musical because they love the movie, but once they are in the theatre they are going to have a completely new experience coming at them.” Great care has gone into the stage adaptation, said Levy, because with great opportunity also comes royal pressure. “This is not just any Disney show. It’s Frozen,” said Levy. “Elsa and Anna mean so much to so many people. The weight of that is both a huge responsibility and a huge honor.” Frozen earned $1.2 billion at cinemas worldwide and that was before it was made available for home viewing. The soundtrack became the highest-selling album of 2014, moving more than 10 million units. The New Yorker magazine said Frozen “has transcended the commercial realm and captured the culture.” Levy totally gets it. The Oscar-winning anthem “Let It Go” has become so pervasive, Levy said, that her 16-monthold is already singing the song from his diapers. So how does one go about creating a new character for the stage that comes from a film that is already so ingrained in the hearts and minds of its audience? “It’s tricky,” Levy said with a laugh. “I think the reason Elsa resonates with so many people is that her struggle to figure out how to be who she really is and accept and own that and love herself in spite of her flaws, is so relatable. She is trying to shed the pressure of other people’s expectations of her and figure out how to celebrate her flaws as part of who she is. And that is what I am trying to focus on as the actor playing Elsa. A lot of people have expectations about how she should be portrayed, but I am trying to take a page from ‘Let It Go’ and get all of that out of my head.” Frozen is the story of two princesses, one cursed with the power to control and manipulate ice. When Elsa accidentally injures her sister, it sets off a series of
betrayals, treacheries and curses that can only be healed with an act of true love. But unlike most fairytales, the heroic act that saves the day in Frozen doesn’t have anything to do with a handsome prince; it’s all about sisterhood. “It’s about women being supportive of each other,” Murin said. “Simply put: Together we are stronger.” Levy and Murin have played Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in Wicked — just not at the same time. Like Elphaba, Elsa possesses a power she has repeatedly been told is a bad thing, and it inadvertently hurts someone she loves. Levy said it is crucial for women in the audience to see their own individual power — whatever that power might be — as a beautiful thing. “It’s all about harnessing that power and taking those things we don’t love about ourselves and trying to see the positive side of it,” Levy said. The essential message of Frozen, Murin added, is “accepting who you are — and not being afraid to be who you are.”
The purpose of the seven-week Denver run is for the creative team to explore, experiment, act and react as the musical continues its development up to its Broadway opening in 2018. “The feedback from the audiences is critically important to the production as the creative team molds the show,” said Jack Eldon, Vice President of Domestic Touring and Regional Engagements at Disney Theatrical Productions. But Levy already has a pretty good idea of the theatrical experience audiences are in for here. “I think it’s going to really surprise people,” she said. “Yes, it is going to be visually spectacular. Yes, it is going to sound incredible. Yes, it’s going to have all of the things that you want out of a Disney production. But it is also going to have so much depth and heart and soul. “Nothing about this is frothy. What you will see is every important moment in the lives of these characters. You are going to come away having experienced something unique and new, while still within the template of something you know and love already.”

Worldwide, its nine Broadway titles have been seen by over 160 million theatergoers and have been nominated for 59 Tony® Awards, winning Broadway’s highest honor 20 times. With more than 20 productions currently produced or licensed, a Disney musical is being performed professionally somewhere on the planet virtually every hour of the day. The company’s inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, opened in 1994. It played a remarkable 13 year run on Broadway and has been produced in 37 countries worldwide. WOMEN’S VOICES FUND
In May, Chairwoman April Jones and the Denver Center Alliance threw a beautiful luncheon for 600 guests who gathered to celebrate — and support — women in theatre at Women with Hattitude. Proceeds support the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ Women’s Voices Fund, a first-of-its-kind endowment designed to foster the work of women in theatre. Now sitting at $1.3 million, funds have helped produce 31 plays by women in the past 12 years. The day featured lunch by Epicurean Culinary Group, entertainment from The Secret Garden and the always-anticipated Macy’s Parade of Hats. More than $80,000 was raised for this important cause. HELPING WOMEN TAKE CENTER STAGE While more than half of our fans are female, there are still too few women who are able to share their stories with an audience. The Women’s Voices Fund enables our Theatre Company to commission, workshop and produce new plays by women and is now a national model for femalecentric theatre fundraising. In its 12th year, we have raised more than $1.3 million that has enabled us to commission 20 female playwrights, hire 23 female directors and contribute to 31 world premiere plays by women.

United is pleased to serve as the official airline of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) and proudly supports its remarkable contributions to the performing arts community in Denver and beyond. Together with the DCPA, United celebrates the energy that artists and actors bring to Denver and the global stage. But United does more than connect passengers through safe and convenient air travel, it also forges strong relationships with the people and communities it serves. United employees also have donated thousands of hours of service to various local charities such as Food Bank of the Rockies. In June and July United hosted interns from Denver Public Schools’ CareeerConnect program to give them firsthand experience behind the scenes at an airline. Employees have assembled hygiene kits for area shelters; conducted drives for school supplies, clothes, and food; held fundraisers for everything from wild animals to breast cancer, and made dreams come true for sick kids through Make-A-Wish Foundation. United’s Volunteer Impact Grants program offers employees the opportunity to apply for cash grants for area nonprofits where they volunteer frequently and has provided thousands of dollars to local organizations since the program began.

United employees especially love bringing smiles to hundreds of local children undergoing medical treatments through the annual holiday ‘’Fantasy Flight” trip to the North Pole and teddy bear deliveries to hospitalized children. Ben Flyin, the United Adventure Bear, brings his own passport full of travel fun and games to share with everyone he meets. For the past six years United has sponsored special matinee performances at DCPA for hundreds of local students. United enjoys the privilege of sharing the thrill of a live theatrical performance accompanied by an educational talkback with these students to expand their view of themselves and the world. “At United, we take our role as a community partner and corporate citizen seriously, and we are proud to support the DCPA. With 80 years of service to the Mile High, City this year we also are proud of our long-standing commitment to the Denver community that thousands of employees and customers call home,” said Suzi Cabo, Managing Director of Corporate and Community Affairs. Microsoft technology enables more than 300 DCPA employees to innovate and stay competitive in the industry, as they produce 23 plays, present 16 musicals and educate 105,000 students. Through its software donation, the DCPA now has the latest desktop and server operating systems to provide operational improvement and the flexibility to meet patron and user needs. “Our relationship with the DCPA is something of pride here in the greater Denver area,” said Chris Giblin. “We are delighted to continue providing donations and software to help great works of art come to life.” A significant portion of the Microsoft funding is directed through ArtsFund, a federated giving program for local corporations, foundations and individuals. In addition to the arts, Microsoft is committed to serving Denver and other local communities in four key areas: empowering youth, empowering nonprofits, empowering employees, and humanitarian and disaster response. With these pillars in mind, Microsoft donated more than $15.5 million to Colorado charities in recent years.
