LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

W

Welcome to our new theatre season — “new” being the operative word. I’m delighted to join the Denver Center for the Performing Arts as its new President & CEO and would like to thank Chairman Dan Ritchie for his leadership and vision over the past decade. As I work with Dan and our Board, we’re actively looking to reinvigorate your experience with cuttingedge programming, meaningful partnerships and new ways to engage with each and every one of you. As we look toward our future and our contributions to the American theatre, we can’t help but glance back. Over our 36-year history, the DCPA has been a pioneer in the theatre industry: 138 world premiere plays by our Theatre Company, 12 Broadway tour launches and original productions by Off-Center which is entirely dedicated to new forms of theatre. And now we have the opportunity to build upon that history of success and develop new theatre that reflects our community and gives voice to a variety of storytellers. But big picture thinking takes careful planning, dedication and resources. To that end, we have established the Fund for Innovation, a fund designed to enable us to research, experiment, learn and take risks to meet the diverse needs of our patrons.

IT’S NOT

RELIGION, BUT CLOSE For Robert Lopez, one of the authors of The Book of Mormon, art, music and story-telling are a path to religious experience. Really.

S

Songwriter Robert Lopez doesn’t mind that The Book of Mormon, the Broadway juggernaut he co-authored with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, is popularly thought of as the “South Park” musical because of Stone and Parker’s involvement. He knows full well, having co-authored the puppet sensation Avenue Q some years back, what it’s like to introduce a form-breaking original show that’s not a jukebox musical or an adaptation of a movie. “When we did Avenue Q, it was really hard to convey to people what it was supposed to be, and why people should go see it,” said Lopez in a recent interview from his home in Brooklyn. “So I understand why the producers used the ‘South Park’ hook to promote this show. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to see a show called The Book of Mormon if it wasn’t by them.” But Lopez isn’t shy about setting the record straight. “It was a show that was my idea,” he said, adding crucially, “and when we met I discovered they happened to have the same idea.” Indeed, the initial Lopez/Stone/ Parker summit is by now the stuff of musical theatre legend, on a par with the night Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins stitched together “Rose’s Turn” out of bits and pieces of Gypsy’s score. When Stone and Parker went to see Avenue Q on Broadway

20

denvercenter.org

in 2003, while in the midst of working on their own puppet-centered project (the film Team America), they were flattered, if a little puzzled, to see themselves thanked in Lopez’s Playbill bio, since they didn’t know him. That in turn led to an informal post-show meeting and eventually to a collaboration around their shared fascination with Mormonism. The Playbill tribute was there, Lopez recalled, because Parker and Stone’s 1999 musical film—South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut—had been an inspiration for Lopez and his Avenue Q co-writer, Jeff Marx. In fact, Sondheim himself has gone on record to call that profane but tuneful film the best musical of its decade. “Well, it was a pretty barren 10 years,” Lopez joked, before explaining his own admiration for the film. “It shows an understanding not only of how musicals are structured and how they work but of the meaning of the form. It used the optimism of musicals as a metaphor for the optimism of childhood, against the backdrop of the satire. It was really about the eyes of a child.” It’s important, Lopez continued, that a musical not be simply a play with songs as garnish; form and content should harmonize. “When you’re writing one of these shows, you have to figure out what the music means to the story,” said Lopez,

who met Marx in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop and continues to moderate sessions there. “In Avenue Q, it was about education, about learning life lessons—it was a musical children’s show for grownups. With Book of Mormon it’s a) the naïveté of the missionaries, and b) their beliefs. And music embodies those feelings.” The Mormon-missionaries-abroad premise that gives the musical its shape wasn’t among the initial ideas of any of the authors, said Lopez. “My idea was to read the Book of Mormon and find the epic story that, in telling it, would make fun of itself,” said Lopez. “Their idea was to do the story of Joseph Smith as a musical. Then they suggested we all do it together, which I thought was a great idea.” But in October of that year, that notion seemed to be moot when “South Park” aired the episode “All About Mormons,” which irreverently recounted the story of Smith, Mormonism’s founding prophet, in parallel flashbacks with the story of a present-day Mormon family newly arrived in South Park. Lopez wasn’t crestfallen, exactly, but he figured that Parker and Stone had taken the idea and run with it. So he and Marx were pleasantly surprised to get an email from the “South Park” provocateurs, revisiting the idea of their collaboration. “We were like, ‘Oh,

“We discovered that we all had the same feelings about religion and God—that God doesn’t exist and yet somehow he does, and that even though the stories are made up, the leap of faith that people make makes them better people.”

The Book of Mormon Second National Tour

— ROBERT LOPEZ, CO-AUTHOR, THE BOOK OF MORMON

we thought you had done that idea already,’ ” Lopez said. The writers found that not only was there much more to say about Mormons than could be conveyed in a 22-minute TV episode, but that the story of this relatively new religion was an ideal way to treat larger satirical themes. “We discovered that we all had the same feelings about religion and God— that God doesn’t exist and yet somehow he does,” said Lopez. “And that even though the stories are made up, the leap of faith that people make makes them better people.” While Parker and Stone knew Mormons from their Colorado upbringing, New York native Lopez’s fascination was more literary (Avenue Q’s Marx left the project fairly early in its development). In scholar Harold Bloom’s comparative-literature class at Yale, Lopez recalled, Bloom favorably

compared Smith’s fantastical Mormon scriptures to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. “The thing about the Mormonism that I’ve always been interested in,” Lopez explained, “is the way you can talk about all religion through it. You don’t even have to make fun of it. You just tell an audience what Mormons believe and people get the idea: This is a fully functioning religion, it’s real, it does change people’s lives—and they believe all these stories that sound ridiculous. Since it’s so recent, it doesn’t have all the respect that we give the Judeo-Christian traditions; with those, since our mind can’t stretch back that far, we can almost believe that somehow God walked the earth back then. With Mormonism, you can see, ‘Oh, this is how religions start.’ ” If Lopez’s interest in Mormonism in particular was secondhand, his own interest in religion is more personal. “I went through my own crisis of faith,” he said. “I went to church; I grew up Catholic-ish. I did believe when I was young.” His beliefs faded in college, as they do for many, though not quite for the usual reasons. While many drift away from religion as they explore their sexual identity or are confronted with radically different points of view, it was in fact up-close exposure to religious practice that soured Lopez. “In college I sang in choirs and I started to see the mechanics behind the Mass,” he said. “There is quite literally a backstage, and the Mass is quite literally stagecraft. Where I went they had incense, and there was an organ that had something called a zimbalstern—a wheel that tinkles when you push the key and makes it feel like there are angels in the church. There are stories, there’s a throughline, there’s a snack. It’s everything that theatre does; it’s basically a proto-musical.” He even recalled one priest saying to another, with a knowing sigh worthy of a Broadway hoofer, “Two shows today.” For a while, like many freshly minted non-believers, Lopez said, his attitude was, “Forget about that stuff. It wasn’t until later that I started to think: What is real about it? I started to look at the way people behave when they do think there’s a God versus the way people behave when they think they’re forsaken, in a cold, empty universe with only science. Science is a kind of religion itself; we don’t all check out every experiment for ourselves. We take a lot on faith.” Though he now stops short of fully re-upping on his childhood faith, Lopez

clearly feels, as The Book of Mormon demonstrates, that religion is a part of human experience and that, on balance, it may be a net good. “God, whether he does or doesn’t actually exist, does exist as part of the human experience,” said Lopez. “That’s undeniable.” And if his glimpses behind the curtain of the Catholic Mass first made him question the objective truth of the narrative behind the ritual, Lopez harbors no doubts about the value of stage storytelling. “Any kind of literature, any kind of art that tells a story is a form of religious experience—it’s a consciousness-changing endeavor,” said Lopez. “It transmits spirit through it. In musical theatre, we’re lifting people up, giving them stories and arming them for experiences they encounter in life.” He almost makes it sound like a mission. Rob Weinert-Kendt is associate editor at American Theatre and has written about theatre and the arts for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Variety, The Guardian and The San Francisco Chronicle.

RANDY WEEKS MEMORIAL

GOLF TOURNAMENT

The DCPA’s 12th annual fundraising golf tournament, held June 29 at the Lakewood Country Club, was renamed this year in honor of the late DCPA President Randy Weeks. The 2015 Randy Weeks Memorial Golf Tournament raised $45,000 for the Bobby G Awards, an annual celebration of achievement in Colorado high school theatre founded by Weeks in 2013. Just before the shotgun start, students from Westminster High School’s Rent serenaded the golfers with that show’s signature song, “Seasons of Love.” Rent was one of five nominated outstanding musicals at the 2015 Bobby G Awards ceremony. New DCPA President and CEO Scott Shiller thanked the golfers for supporting both Weeks’ dream and the DCPA’s mission. “Randy really wanted to celebrate the craft of theatre for high school students and to celebrate the arts and culture in schools in the same way that sports are celebrated,” Shiller said. The golfers were afforded several fun opportunities to win show-related prizes. A closest-to-the-pin par-3 hole was designated the Sweeney Todd “Closest Shave” hole. And in honor of DCPA Broadway’s upcoming launch of the If/Then national tour, each foursome designated one player to select a fortune card. It contained either contained good news (“Subtract one shot from your score”) or bad news (“Proceed to the nearest bunker.”)

As the day drew to a close, the participants all celebrated good news indeed — over its 12-year history, the tournament has raised $1 million for DCPA programming.

United is pleased to serve as the official airline of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) and proudly supports its remarkable contributions to the performing arts community in Denver and beyond. Together with the DCPA, United celebrates the energy that artists, performers and dancers bring to Denver and the global stage. “At United, we take our role as a community partner and corporate citizen seriously, and we are proud to support the DCPA. With more than 75 years of service to the Mile High City, we are also proud of our long-standing commitment to the Denver community that thousands of co-workers and customers call home,” said Michelle Baden, Managing Director of Corporate and Government Affairs. In addition to the DCPA, United is honored to support several Colorado organizations including the Colorado Symphony, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Public Schools Foundation, Latin American Educational Foundation, and USO Denver. United co-workers also have donated more than 5,000 hours of service to various local partner initiatives, such as the Food Bank of the Rockies. Our employee Volunteer Impact Grants program offers employees the opportunity to apply for grants to area non-profits where they volunteer frequently and has provided thousands of dollars to local organizations. Last season United sponsored more than 400 children at a student matinee performance of Lord of the Flies and this season will be sharing All the Way with high school students. It is a privilege to share the thrill of a live theatrical performance accompanied by an educational talkback with these students to expand their view of themselves and the world. We especially love bringing smiles to hundreds of local children undergoing medical treatment through the annual holiday “Fantasy Flights” trip to the North Pole and teddy bear deliveries hospitalized children. Ben Flyin’ the Adventure Bear brings his own Passport full of travel fun and games to share with everyone he meets!

HELPING TO ENHANCE THE FUTURE OF COLORADO’S CHILDREN

C

CoBiz Financial and its family of services—Colorado Business Bank, Arizona Business Bank, CoBiz Insurance and CoBiz Private Client Advisors— applaud the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) and its cultural contributions to Colorado. CoBiz believes the DCPA’s mission—providing internationally acclaimed theatre to the Colorado community and arts education to children—is crucial for a vibrant, well-rounded city. As school funding for arts education decreases, the DCPA and other arts organizations are taking on the responsibility of engaging and enhancing the creative growth of young people. The imagination and innovation spurred by the arts have never been more important to our economic vitality than they are today. In its 15-year history, Biz Bash, the company’s signature concert fundraiser, has distributed more than $4.4 million to Colorado children-focused, not-for-profit charities. The CoBiz Cares Foundation is an employee-funded, company-matched, grant-giving organization led by a diverse board of employees. Since its inception in 2009, the Foundation has granted more than $913,000 to worthy organizations. In addition, a culture of wellness and community involvement has led to countless volunteer hours, projects and team walks. CoBiz encourages other companies and individuals to join in support of the DCPA to create an ever more energetic and enlightened community.

The Denver Post is proud to support the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), both through sponsorship of its acclaimed theatre productions as well as with grant funding through Denver Post Community Foundation. Our partnership is founded on our mutual mission to improve and enrich the quality of life in our community. While the DCPA does that through the performing arts, The Denver Post does it through its Denver Post Community programs, which support nonprofit organizations and events in four areas of focus: arts and culture, children and youth, literacy and education, and the provision of basic human services. During this season of giving, the Post focuses on basic human services by continuing its legacy of raising and distributing funds to local nonprofit agencies through Season To Share, a campaign of Denver Post Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund. Did you know that right here in Denver there are: • People who don’t have enough food to eat • Children who lack the education to succeed in the future • Families who have lost their homes and have nowhere to go • Folks who can’t afford basic healthcare?

Since 1992, more than $64 million has been distributed through Season To Share to help Colorado citizens who are in the most need of assistance. All contributions are matched at 50% by the McCormick Foundation and 100% of all donations (plus the match) go directly to Denverarea charities that help move people out of poverty. The Denver Post and the McCormick Foundation pay all administrative expenses. This year, more than 5,200 generous donors contributed $1,550,000. With the match from the McCormick Foundation, grants totaling $2,350,000 were distributed to 53 local nonprofits including Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, Food Bank of the Rockies, The Gathering Place, Mi Casa Resource Center For Women, Volunteers of America and many more. Thanks to the generosity of thousands of donors and the hard work of the recipient agencies, millions of meals were provided, hundreds of nights of shelter were used and thousands of medical visits were completed last year.

Just as a Matisse painting is much more than a collection of brush strokes, Epicurean Group at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) delivers far more than the work of skilled chefs. With its broadly talented team and vast experience, Epicurean Group is an event unto itself.

Epicurean Group continues to blaze new trails, staying two steps ahead of the latest trends.

denvercenter.org

For 28 years, Epicurean Group has treated Denver socialites to expertly cultivated evenings that create memories of a lifetime. The team goes above and beyond to ensure that no detail gets overlooked, from visionary event design to professionally managed event operations. Many of the team members have dedicated their talents to Epicurean Group for a full two decades, and since 2007, have deepened their commitment to excellence under the passionate direction of President Greg Karl and General Manager Austin Pelster. Of course, some of these efforts result in the award-winning cuisine for which Epicurean Group is known. As Denver’s culinary scene evolves into one of the nation’s best, Epicurean Group continues to blaze new trails, staying two steps ahead of the latest trends. The city’s up-and-coming culinary masters have a habit of finding Epicurean Group, creating a mix of fresh, passionate individuals with the seasoned professionals who orchestrate each event’s fine details. It’s exactly in those details that Epicurean Group thrives, bringing an eye for design and a palate for fine flavor that perfectly complement the stunning urban architecture of the Seawell Grand Ballroom and its unparalleled views. From a swath of red to match a sunset over the Rocky Mountains to a sparkling glass of wine served as the lights of the downtown skyline begin to sparkle, Epicurean Group imbues each event with a unique and zestful spirit. Individual elements, however, are not what make attendees rave. Rather, the Epicurean Group staff makes sure that every brush stroke falls into exactly the right place, so that attendees instead experience something much richer and more memorable: an evening that transforms into a seamless work of art.
