SIGHTLINE

WWelcome to the DCPA! Whether this is your first or fiftieth time at the Arts Complex, we’re delighted you’re here.

This “popular” musical about a girl with skin as green as the Emerald City and her bubbly bright friend returns for its seventh Denver engagement. While adults may appreciate themes such as bias and self-love, younger audiences will be thrilled with the elaborate stage effects and incredible costumes. Much like The Wizard of Oz when it first appeared on stage in 1902, Wicked has become a classic for a new generation.

An altogether different “classic” is playing across the way through August 11. The Second City returns to the Garner Galleria Theatre with an all-new revue — Comedian Rhapsody. Known for such comedians as Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and Amy Poehler, The Second City: Comedian Rhapsody features some of the troupe’s best-loved sketch comedy classics plus new improv skits.

For more adventurous audiences, we’re also delighted to present the U.S. tour launch of DARKFIELD running through September 1 in RiNo’s The Bird Lot. This new show from DCPA Off-Center is a multi-sensory auditory experience that takes place in a shipping container. Participants can choose one, two or all three experiences: SÉANCE, FLIGHT and COMA.

These productions will fill the summer while we gear up for our 2024/25 season. In addition to the best Broadway tours, the DCPA also handcrafts its own productions: Denver Center Theatre Company offers eight mainstage plays including the 30th anniversary of A Christmas Carol; DCPA Off-Center puts audience at the center of its immersive programming, and Theatre for Young Audiences delights children with Elephant & Piggie’s “We are in a Play!” this fall.

We hope you return for an all-new lineup of shows. The full season can be found online at denvercenter.org. We’ll see you soon!

SATURDAY NIGHT

ALIVE

RAISES VOICES WITH A PERFORMANCE AND MASTERCLASS BY LACHANZE

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ annual gala, Saturday Night Alive, was held on June 8, 2024. The signature gala serves as a fundraiser to support locally produced plays, onsite acting classes, and educational programs at the DCPA. The 2024 event was attended by more than 500 guests and grossed over $900,000. Since its inception, Saturday Night Alive has raised more than $23 million.

Gala Co-Chairs John Farnam and Paul Heitzenrater, Trustee Co-Chairs David and Jessica Farahi, DCPA Board Chair Hassan Salem, Sheila Salem, President & CEO Janice Sinden, and Executive Director of Education & Community Engagement Allison Watrous (pictured below) rallied support from dozens of Denver’s most engaged donors, companies, and foundations to raise critical funds, which help the DCPA engage more than 865,000 patrons each year.

For this year’s event, guests were invited to attend a one-nightonly performance by Tony- and Emmy award-winning actress, producer, and singer LaChanze. Known for her Tony Award-winning role as Celie in the 2006 revival of The Color Purple, LaChanze took to the Wolf Theatre stage to perform a variety of Broadway hits, including ending the show with the power ballad “I’m Here” from The Color Purple and Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” which had every guest dancing as she ended her 60-minute performance.

Before welcoming LaChanze to the stage, eight nominees from the 2024 Bobby G High School Musical Theatre Awards performed a medley. The Bobby G Awards is one of several DCPA Education programs that receive support from Saturday Night Alive’s proceeds.

Four of those young performers also received a special opportunity to participate in a masterclass taught by LaChanze earlier in the afternoon, hosted by DCPA Education. The performers received feedback from LaChanze to use in future auditions. In addition to her performing credits, LaChanze’s experience as a director and producer proved to be invaluable for these aspiring thespians.

CELEBRATES 19 YEARS

The DCPA’s 2024 Women with Hattitude luncheon on May 2 was the most successful in the event’s history — by a landslide. Tickets were sold out and the event received unprecedented support through sponsorships. Nearly 650 guests were in attendance who raised almost $110,000 by the event’s end.

Women with Hattitude is a fundraiser for the Women’s Voices Fund, which supports the work of female playwrights and directors. Since the fund’s inception, the Denver Center Theatre Company has produced 39 plays by women (including 18 world premieres), supported the work of 46 female playwrights, and employed 33 female directors.

Hattitude includes a welcome reception, luncheon, and the boisterous Parade of Hats — a fashion show where guests compete for prizes like Best in Show. Guests were also invited to bid in a silent auction, participate in a Wine Pull, and shop Kendra Scott jewelry surprise boxes. The lobby was filled with color and enthusiasm, with guests wearing their best fedoras, fascinators, berets, and sun hats.

The next Women with Hattitude will take place on May 1, 2025. If this year’s event serves as a prediction, you won’t want to wait to purchase tickets and tables for next year.

Apart from attending the Hattitude celebration, individuals are also encouraged to become a member of the Women’s Voices Fund. More details can be found at denvercenter.org/wvf.

THE POWER OF “ Yes, and... ”

“Bee, beeeee!” screamed Sam Charney as they ran across the stage during one of the many games the improv class was doing.

They ducked behind the other character on stage as Teaching Artist Heather Curran gasped, “Is there really a bee here?”

“No,” said Sam, pausing the action. “I’m acting.” And with that, they got the best compliment any actor, especially a 15-year-old one, could get.

The game was one of many the teens were practicing. Though, practicing is an odd word since the whole idea behind improv is not knowing what will happen next and playing off another person.

“It’s all about spontaneity, collaborations and the power to say ‘yes,’” said Allison Watrous, DCPA’s Executive Director of Education & Community Engagement.

“We teach them to play what they know, and it’s great to see them being themselves and showcasing their own, unique background on the stage,” said Teaching Artist Nanna Thompson.

“What I love about a good improv group is they all want you to win,” added Thompson. “There are no mistakes as long as there is someone to catch you and lift you up.”

For many, improv isn’t just a fun way to pass the time or boost acting skills, it can help in day-to-day life as well. Both for adults and kids.

Yes, yes, yes. That’s the motto when doing improv, and while it may sound simple, saying yes isn’t always easy. A lot of the work to be a good improv artist is to trust your fellow actors. It’s also about listening, reacting, quick thinking and letting go of control.

“Improv is a low stakes way to practice higher stakes skills, and it has all these levels of social and emotional learning,” said Curran. “The students are learning how to step back in order to let someone else step forward.”

“Flexibility is something I struggle with, and perfection,” Sam said. “Improv has helped me in my everyday life to just let go a little. At the beginning of the school year I struggled with talking to classmates, and it’s really helped me go and talk to people more.”

THE WITCHES OF OZ DELIVER A WICKED HIT

IIn 1900, author L. Frank Baum, wrote a charming book called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that became a children’s classic. The book was turned into a stage musical a year later and begat another great classic: the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Judy Garland played a girl who, after a close encounter of the tornado kind, found herself in a strange and mysterious land. Dorothy was her name and all she really wanted was to get back home to Kansas. The film’s iconic characters and images have become so deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness that psychologists use the movie as an archetype of the hero’s journey. Like Dorothy, all we want, it would seem, is to find our way back home.

The next Oz-ian incarnation came along in 1975 when a sleek version of the story called The Wiz, featuring an all-black cast, opened on Broadway. It ran for 1,672 performances and was later made into a movie with a remount touring the Buell Theatre next April.

Then, in 1995, strident political satirist and author Gregory Maguire wrote a gargantuan and immensely popular fantasy novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. In an ironic twist — everything in Oz seems to have an ironic twist — the book examines, among other things, the nature of good and the nature of evil. Maguire found them alarmingly and inextricably entwined.

Then the adventures in Oz morphed once again, this time into a stage production adapted from Maguire’s book. Its latest life form is that of the Tony Award-winning musical by composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin) and librettist Winnie Holzman (“My So Called Life,” “thirtysomething”).

Wicked tells a tale that is about as far removed from Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz as the Emerald City is from Wichita. The show’s dark, witty, sophisticated charm made it the hottest ticket on Broadway when it debuted, and it remains “popular” more than 20 years later.

Glinda the good witch is still there, but what, the musical inquires, is goodness after all? The main action revolves around Elphaba, the so-called Wicked Witch (named by Maguire as a derivation of L. Frank Baum’s initials). Elphaba proves the popular adage that, indeed, it’s not easy being green. Born a lovely shade of jade, she is misunderstood, shunned and persecuted. While this naturally takes its toll, the question remains: is she evil? The answer is as ambiguous as her name. Elphaba and Glinda’s unlikely friendship illustrates the fact that it’s not simple trying to figure out which witch is which.

“The idea behind Wicked is that things are not as they seem,” notes Holzman. “What you think you know, you don’t really know. It is the premise of the novel that you

The idea of taking what is one of the iconic villains of American culture, the Wicked Witch of the West — so much ‘the villain’ that we don’t even know her name — and looking at it from her point of view, that seemed to me a brilliant concept.

know certain things, but you don’t know the deeper story.”

The same notion drew composer Stephen Schwartz to the project: “I’m often attracted to an idea that takes a familiar story and spins it, looking at it from another direction, like Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I like it when I see things like that, and I like to write them. For me, if you take a familiar story — whether it be the Book of Genesis or The Wizard of Oz — and you come at it from another point of view, the tension between the audience’s preconception and the approach you’re taking to the story adds an extra level of response, plus it helps to clarify the points you’re trying to make.

COMING UP FROM BROADWAY

KIMBERLY AKIMBO

KIMBERLY AKIMBO is a new name on the Buell Theatre stage. The Tony Awardwinning Best Musical will launch its first national tour in Denver after an incredible Broadway run. From family-favorite Disney’s The Lion King to the cult classic THE BOOK OF MORMON, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts has launched over a dozen Broadway national tours. Now, the most award-winning production of the 2022/23 season will be among those renowned titles.

Kimberly, a teen in suburban New Jersey, is living with a condition that causes her to age rapidly. It isn’t a perfect situation for a new girl in town trying to fit in when she looks like a 70-year-old woman. Kim navigates family dysfunction, borderline personalities, a rare genetic condition, her first crush… and possible felony charges in this “howlingly funny heartbreaker of a show” (The New Yorker). This wholly original musical tells the story of growing up and growing old (in no particular order).

“The idea of taking what is one of the iconic villains of American culture, the Wicked Witch of the West — so much ‘the villain’ that we don’t even know her name — and looking at it from her point of view, that seemed to me a brilliant concept. It was clear that a show about her could explore some of my favorite themes: the difference between surface appearances and what’s really going on underneath, how life is more complex and has more ambiguity than we tend to be comfortable with and, certainly, than our public discourse admits to.”

Schwartz also found the whole idea inherently musical.

“Oz is a fantastical, larger-than-life setting full of characters who almost demand to sing,” he said, “and the witch herself is so full of big emotions — rage, ambition and longing — the idea was screaming to be a musical.”

In addition, tucked into this timeless tale is enough eye-popping technical wizardry in Eugene Lee’s award-winning sets to keep everyone this side of Oz happy. Yet beyond the show’s infectious score and mind-boggling sets is a thoughtful universal theme. Actor David Garrison, who played The Wizard in Denver’s first touring engagement, wisely suggested: “There’s a Green Girl in all of us…. Everyone has felt like the outcast at one time or another. It’s part of the show’s broad appeal. It’s not a children’s show, but kids enjoy the fantasy of it, adolescents get the love story and adults see the political allegory.

“This show is like a rock concert every night. It’s very heartening to see that. It’s what theatre does best.”

BROADWAY COMMUNITY SEATS PROGRAM BREAKS BARRIERS

LLast season, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts launched a new program to broaden ticket access to the community. Called the Broadway Community Seats Program, this is a partnership between the DCPA’s Community Engagement and Marketing teams in collaboration with Broadway touring producers.

The Broadway Community Seats Program is a mission-driven initiative that aims to empower marginalized communities by providing them with the transformative experience of live theatre. Fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers to access the magic of Broadway.

Nearly 1,000 tickets were distributed to 146 individuals and organizations last season to such shows as MJ, Disney’s Frozen, TINA — The Tina Turner Musical, MAMMA MIA!, Message In A Bottle, Hairspray and many more.

“We are so thrilled to welcome folks to our biggest shows direct from Broadway,” said Allison Watrous, Executive Director of Education and Community Engagement. “Each season the DCPA is excited to find new ways to provide access and engagement to our collaborators and new community partners. It is inspiring to all come together to share in the power of storytelling and we’re so appreciative of our Broadway partners for making it possible. The joy of a communal audience is palpable!”

After the Broadway Marketing team secures approval from a show, it’s up to the DCPA Community Engagement team to coordinate the release of tickets. While groups can request tickets to a specific show, the team makes a distribution plan to intentionally rotate the distribution and quantity of tickets provided.

This season’s beneficiaries have included Brother Jeff ’s Cultural Center, Mexicanisima Restaurant, A+ Angels Mentors, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Firefly Autism, Opening Act, Youth Scene and many more.

The DCPA distributed more than 150,000 free and low-cost tickets in 2022/23 — nearly 21% of all tickets distributed.

The Broadway Seats program, along with the DCPA’s other free and low-cost ticket opportunities, enabled the organization to welcome more than 150,000 individuals last season — nearly 21% of all tickets distributed.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for the amazing complimentary tickets you provided to us for the Cher show. We loved the show; it was amazing!” said Tania Montes with Aurora Public Schools’ Migrant Education Program. “I just want to let you know that we are very appreciative…thank you so much! We are forever grateful.”

Individuals who work with or represent non-profit organizations, institutions, businesses or individuals for whom cost is a barrier are invited to contact the DCPA Community Engagement team at community@dcpa.org to be placed on the distribution list for future Broadway Seats opportunities. For those who are interested in other free or low-cost ticket opportunities at the DCPA including DCPAccess with tickets starting as low as $10 and offers for military, seniors and students, visit denvercenter.org/offers.

PROUD PARTNER OF THE DENVER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

CCBS Colorado’s Dillon Thomas is known as Your Reporter in Northern Colorado, but around here, he’s better known as Colorado’s connection to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. CBS Colorado’s team of Your Reporters covers Colorado’s vibrant arts scene like no one else and Dillon’s coverage of the DCPA is unique and far-reaching. His commitment has put him on the road with America’s top traveling productions, including MJ the musical, TINA — The Tina Turner Musical and SIX. “Telling the stories of these extraordinary performers and showing our viewers the long hours behind the scenes and the intense effort these shows require is one of my great honors,” Thomas says. “I’m very proud to represent CBS Colorado and showcase all the incredible talent that the DCPA brings to our theatres throughout the year.”

In addition to providing best-in-class entertainment, Ameristar takes pride in fulfilling an obligation to the community to make a positive impact.
— SEAN DEMEULE, GENERAL MANAGER OF AMERISTAR BLACK HAWK

PROUD CORPORATE MEMBERS OF THE DCPA

AAmeristar Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk is proud to partner with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts again this year. The DCPA has been entertaining the Denver community for decades with its exceptional productions. Ameristar Black Hawk, also being in the entertainment business, finds the partnership very beneficial. Ameristar strives to create memorable, thrilling experiences for its guests and the partnership with the DCPA plays a large role in that.

“In addition to providing best-in-class entertainment,” said Sean Demeule, General Manager of Ameristar Black Hawk, “Ameristar takes pride in fulfilling an obligation to the community to make a positive impact. Our community outreach program, Ameristar Cares, enables team members to donate their time and make financial contributions. Our team members enjoy volunteering locally in Gilpin County as well as in the Denver metro area. Ameristar also has a Charitable Giving committee that provides donations to a multitude of charities throughout Colorado.”

For that reason Ameristar Black Hawk has continued to partner with the DCPA year after year. It’s about having a passion not only to entertain, but to also change lives. To foster a vibrant community of giving and to contribute to causes which seek to create a better tomorrow. When the curtain falls, Ameristar will be standing with the DCPA.
