For those of us who love the theatre, it is common to share memories of our favorite shows or theatrical experiences with each other. Here in Denver, a commonly shared favorite memory (for those who have been here awhile) is that of seeing The Phantom of the Opera for the first time in 1991 when it debuted at the newly completed Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre. That was 25 years ago. Today in 2016 I am pleased to welcome the spectacular new production to The Buell Theatre for its seventh Denver engagement, now with an all new production never before seen by Denver audiences. Phantom kicks off our 2016/17 Broadway season in grand style. The season ahead proves to be an inspiring, emotional and transforming selection of shows — enduring favorites and inventive new productions direct from Broadway. Over the next year we will present 15 different Broadway titles plus a selection of imaginative new shows making their Colorado debut. Visit denvercenter.org to discover more about all of these exciting shows coming to Denver. But that’s not all…capping it all off in the summer of 2017, the DCPA will host the exciting pre-Broadway engagement of Frozen, the brand new Disney musical that will make its premiere at the Buell before opening on Broadway in spring 2018. As with Disney’s The Little Mermaid in 2007, Denver audiences will get the first opportunity to experience this spectacular new work before it makes its way to New York audiences on Broadway. I, for one, can’t wait to see what the amazingly talented creative team behind this production brings to life on stage. Looking beyond this season, the DCPA is delighted to announce that the smash hit Hamilton will be coming to Denver as part of the 2017/18 Broadway subscription season. Hamilton, winner of 11 Tony Awards, is the story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers told by a talented cast of diverse performers through the musical language of hip hop, jazz, blues, rap and R&B. Subscribers to the 2017/18 Broadway season will receive tickets to this fantastic show (as well as many others!) as part of their package. Show dates and information on how to buy single and group tickets will be announced at a later date. Thank you for joining us at The Buell Theatre to see Phantom. Whether this is your first, second, or tenth time seeing the show, I hope that you are swept away by the “music of the night.” Warmly,
JOHN EKEBERG Executive Director, Broadway

SCFD: ONE PENNY YIELDS R.O.I. —
REACH, OPPORTUNITY & INSPIRATION
Nearly 30 years ago, citizens in the metro area approved a radical new idea — a 1¢ on $10 sales tax intended to support arts and science. The Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) now distributes nearly $55 million to 275 organizations throughout our community. And the return on that investment has been astonishing. ECONOMIC IMPACT
The funded organizations collectively contribute $1.85 BILLION in economic activity each year. Here at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), our five-year economic impact has been $600 million contributing to a vibrant downtown, business development and employment opportunities.
MILLIONS SERVED
Through citizen support of the SCFD, more than 14.2 million residents have enjoyed access to cultural events. Last season, the DCPA alone engaged with more than 1.2 million residents through productions, classes, events and online.
WORLD-CLASS
The SCFD has led Colorado to rank first in per capita attendance at museums, concert venues and theatres. This enthusiastic support of culture attracts exclusive opportunities for our residents. From Chihuly and
Sherlock Holmes to Star Wars costumes and the DCPA’s pre-Broadway debut of Frozen, our citizens’ support allows us to provide exceptional experiences right here in our backyard.
BROAD ACCESS
Nearly 10 million students, seniors and families in our neighborhoods take advantage of FREE and discounted experiences thanks to citizen support of the SCFD. Plus another 4.25 million students have benefited from educational opportunities at school and on fieldtrips, including the DCPA’s popular Student Matinees and the Denver Public Schools Shakespeare Festival. Your continued support of the SCFD will enable our nearly 300 cultural organization to reach citizens throughout the seven-county metro area, will provide opportunities for employment and access to affordable entertainment options, and will inspire future generations through educational opportunities and performances that ignite the imagination. This November, vote YES on 4B.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA BY JOHN MOORE
T
The Buell Theatre was built, in large part, to host the national touring production of The Phantom of the Opera in 1991. And after that grand party, cynics and critics alike predicted it would surely stand empty. Instead, a quartercentury later, it ranks as the nation’s highest-grossing theatre under 3,000 seats. Plans were already underway to convert the dilapidated old basketball arena into “The Buell” in 1990 when the late, legendary Denver theatre producer Robert Garner got a call from British producers Alan Wasser and Sir Cameron Mackintosh. “They said we could have the first national touring production of The Phantom of the Opera — if Denver had a theater that could hold it,” Garner said in a 2011 interview. That would mean massive upgrades to the Buell’s planned backstage area, in effect forcing the city to commit to building a major, state-of-the-art Broadway roadhouse. At a cost of $40 million. “And right up to the end, we were not sure it was going to be ready to open on time,” Garner said. “But contracts were signed, and we were on the hook no matter what.” The 10-week Phantom run christened the 2,830-seat Buell and drew 224,393 patrons, generating $11 million in ticket sales and making an estimated $44 million economic impact. It was later determined that 21 percent of the audience came to Colorado to see the show from 43 states. In a letter to the Rocky Mountain News, Denver resident Dick Moore claimed to have seen the show 25 times during the run. The top ticket price was $60. It was, Denver Post critic Jeff Bradley wrote at the time, “the most successful theatrical event in Denver history.” Since then the Buell, named after Denver architect and philanthropist Temple Hoyne Buell, has served more than

13 million patrons. It launched notable touring productions of Sunset Boulevard, The Lion King and The Book of Mormon. It has hosted comedians like Jerry Seinfeld; speakers such as Madeleine Albright, Laura Bush and Queen Noor of Jordan; and hip musicians including Nick Cave and Ray LaMontagne. The Buell has hosted innumerable graduations, funerals — and even an original stage comedy written by Tyler Perry. But the Buell is primarily home to Broadway musicals such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, which returns this summer in an updated production with new scenery, lighting, staging and choreography. This engagement will be the show’s seventh visit to the Buell. Over the 25 years, dozens of budding Broadway stars from Annaleigh Ashford to Andy Kelso to Sierra Boggess (who has played Christine Daaé in both The Phantom of the Opera and Webber’s 2010 sequel, Love Never Dies) decided they wanted to be actors due to the inspiring shows they watched on the Buell stage. Few would know now that the Buell spent much of its previous life as the rowdy, rickety and raucous Denver Municipal Auditorium Arena, the city’s home for concerts, basketball, tennis, volleyball and professional wrestling. Garner used the arena to promote concerts by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Joni Mitchell, David Cassidy and Neil Diamond. “But professional wrestling was king,” he said. “There were matches there every two weeks.” The Auditorium Theatre, with its deco-inspired rounded corner at 13th and Champa streets, was originally built to host the 1908 Democratic National Convention. The space was divided in 1953. The 6,841-seat basketball arena made up the southwestern half of the building, while the other half housed the more culturally sophisticated Auditorium Theatre — now the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
Long before the Phantom brings down the chandelier in the Buell, spirits roamed the air above the Auditorium Arena. In 1975, the official mascot of the Indiana Pacers basketball team put a hex on the Denver Nuggets before their championship series. Team management countered by hiring a witch to remove the spell in a grand ceremony before the deciding game. (Nevertheless, sadly, the Nuggets lost.)
“ [Producers Wasser and Mackintosh] said we could have the first national touring production of The Phantom of the Opera — if Denver had a theater that could hold it.” — ROBERT GARNER, DCPA BROADWAY FOUNDER On December 26, 1968, Led Zeppelin played its first U.S. concert at the Auditorium Arena. That same year, Eric Clapton played there with his band Cream. The opening act? A hypnotist! But the Auditorium Arena was largely idle after the basketball team bolted for the fancy new McNichols Sports Arena in 1975. Fifteen years later, the fortuitous call came from Mackintosh that both accelerated and expanded the plan to turn the Buell into what remains one of the most successful Broadway touring facilities in the country. John Moore is the DCPA’s Senior Arts Journalist. He compiled much of this report for a story originally published by The Denver Post in 2011.

COMING UP FROM BROADWAY: ROUNDABOUT THEATRE COMPANY’S
CABARET
At the dawn of the 1930s, when life grew grim and uncertain in pre-WWII Berlin, a seedy and sexy nightspot illuminates a decadent distraction. This is the setting for Cabaret, where patrons are encouraged to leave their troubles outside. Led by its gender-bending Master of Ceremonies, The Kit Kat Klub stars Sally Bowles and the club’s singing, dancing and instrument-playing ensemble who tantalize the crowd through dangerous times. While widely known for their Hollywood credits, Cabaret co-directors Sam Mendes (Spectre, Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago) have theatre cred. Mendes has directed with England’s Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre while Marshall is a six-time Tony nominee for Kiss of the Spider Woman, Damn Yankees, Victor/Victoria and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum among others. Their current roadshow stems from Roundabout Theatre Company’s 2014 Broadway revival. Take a quiz about this legendary production before it lights up The Buell Theatre (Sep 27 – Oct 9). 1. T he original Broadway production of Cabaret opened on: a. October 22, 1966 b. November 20, 1966 c. August 25, 1966 2. A “PRINCIPLED” PATHWAY TO FAMILY SUCCESS
W
What does it mean for a family to “succeed”? From Atlantic Trust’s many years of working with multi-generational families on the transition of their wealth, “success” is defined as an environment that sustains and replenishes family wealth across generations. To help families succeed, we leverage three key principles for generational impact, which inspire families to become stronger over time because they’re attached to a unifying, articulated purpose. 1) Integrate family wealth planning — Our Wealth Strategies offering helps families develop wealth planning goals, engage in strategic planning and work in collaboration with other advisors. 2) Evolve a healthy family wealth culture — We work with families to articulate a common purpose, preserve the family’s stories and history, and foster healthy communication across the generations. 3) D evelop the rising generation — We encourage relatives to provide age-appropriate transparency, create a learning environment for the rising generations and encourage opportunities for involvement.
Atlantic Trust’s expanded offering includes multi-generational family workshops and retreats, generation-specific gatherings, printed materials — including extensive information for promoting financial literacy to younger generations — and resources on atlantictrust.com. All of these tools are designed to further our commitment to making sure that our clients’ wealth picture is addressed in a holistic way — and, eventually, fully realized in the way that each family defines “success.”

Larimer Square has come a long way in 50 years. In 1965, a once-charming block had fallen into disrepair. Demolition crews were just weeks away from scrubbing buildings that had stood since before the turn of the century. Today, due to intense preservation efforts, Larimer Square is recognized as Denver’s most beautiful and historic block, a premier shopping and dining district that celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2015. Larimer Associates President & CEO, Jeff Hermanson, has taken great care to make it that way, spending the past 20 years attracting locallyowned, independent boutiques, clubs and restaurants to the block while preserving its beauty and charm. Larimer Square provides visitors a unique experience that compliments the cultural offerings of its neighbor, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). “Larimer Square has found the perfect partner in the DCPA,” said Hermanson. “The unique combination of theatre, music, nightlife, dining and shopping that our two special places provide is unrivaled.” Larimer Square and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts share a strong commitment to the arts. The Square has distinguished itself from other districts by creating a place for independently minded shops and restaurants, giving entrepreneurs the artistic freedom and support they need to make their business dreams a reality. At the same time, Larimer Square offers an experience that complements the artistic and creative sensibilities of the DCPA and hosts multiple events each year to promote the arts including the popular Denver Chalk Art Festival and Art of Winter. “It’s imperative that Larimer Square supports the thousands of talented, creative and entrepreneurial theatregoers who fill the Arts Complex every season,” said Hermanson. “We similarly support the many artists on Larimer Square. Our chefs, bartenders and merchants are some of the most creative in the city.” In addition to the DCPA, Larimer Square is a proud supporter of the Downtown Denver Partnership, the Larimer Arts Association, Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, We Don’t Waste, Volunteers of America, the Denver Art Museum, and more. “Denver is in the middle of an entrepreneurial and cultural transformation,” continued Hermanson. “It’s been amazing to witness and an honor to be a part of this exciting change with Larimer Associates and our partners at The Denver Center.”

Our longstanding partnership with DCPA has given countless individuals of all ages the opportunity to experience and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
he Denver Post Community Foundation T Established in 2011, funds are raised through individual and corporate donations as well as through eight unique signature events including Basket of Joy, Cheyenne Frontier Days Train, Colorado State Spelling Bee, Passport to the Arts, Pedal The Plains Bicycle Tour, Pen & Podium Lecture Series, Ride The Rockies Bicycle Tour, and Underground Music Showcase (UMS). In 2015, the Foundation was proud to grant $252,000 to more than 40 nonprofit agencies in metro Denver. Denver Post Season To Share, a fund of the McCormick Foundation Since 1992, more than $68 million has been distributed through Denver Post Season To Share. All contributions are matched at 50% by the McCormick Foundation and 100% of all donations (plus the match) go directly to Denver area charities that help move people out of poverty. The Denver Post and the McCormick Foundation pay all administrative expenses. This year, more than 4,900 generous donors contributed $1,525,000. With the match from the McCormick Foundation, $2,290,000 was distributed to 49 local nonprofits. ACTS (Assisting the Community Through Service) Denver Post Employee Volunteer Program Giving back is an enriching experience for all involved and our employees take pride in donating their personal time for a wide range of projects each year. In 2015, 746 hours of service was donated through ACTS. Sponsorships By lending support to some of the area’s top nonprofit events and organizations in their promotional and fundraising efforts, we hope to ensure that these high quality programs remain accessible to everyone in our community, both now and in the future. The Denver Post Community Foundation is proud to serve hundreds of metro Denver nonprofit organizations, programs and events. Last year, we contributed more than $6,000,000 in value — through grants, events, volunteer efforts and in-kind advertising — to support the efforts of hundreds of outstanding charitable agencies in our community. We are grateful to our partners and generous supporters for helping to improve and enrich our community! Together we can make a difference. To learn more, visit denverpostcommunity.com.
