Our Fifth Estate

T

The definition of “news” is changing. That’s no secret, right? It used to be the time-honored Fourth Estate, printing and broadcasting the narrative of our collective experience. Now it can be an anonymous tweet, a viral video, a sound bite or a leaked document, all of which have steadily drawn our eyes away from traditional news sources and toward our personal circles of influence. A new study, conducted by Pew Research Center in association with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, finds that 42% of the entire US population now say Facebook and Twitter serve as a source for news about events and issues outside the realm of friends and family. One of the biggest changes in news, especially for theatre, is the decline of dedicated arts coverage from the major print and broadcast sources. As established news organizations have struggled to balance modern profitability with journalistic tradition, they’ve had to make tough choices. I understand that’s not easy and never will be. But I also don’t like it. We in the arts invest so much in telling stories that reflect the social issues facing our community that it hurts to know that fewer people are hearing about these plays and musicals from mainstream sources. Once we could rely on a minimum of coverage. Now we have to hope for it. I’m certainly not blaming the news organizations themselves or the wonderful people who work with us every day to keep us in the news. We have amazing fans in our news partners and appreciate everything they do for us. Truly. This isn’t about blame at all; it’s about behavior. People get their news differently now. So we have to do things differently, too, if we want the same level of attention. That’s why, in addition to our ongoing use of Twitter and Facebook, we’ve built our own online News Center (denvercenter.org/ news-center) with former Denver Post theatre critic, John Moore, at the helm. Every day, we’re publishing theatre news from across the entire state with no agenda other than the news itself. Obviously, we hope it helps promote our work and Colorado’s theatre community as a whole. Eventually, though, we want it to be a resource for anyone interested in arts reporting, in our talented community and in Denver’s unique place in the national arts scene. Until then, where do you get your arts and entertainment news? Which matters more to you — a review by an established theatre critic or a recommendation from a friend or family member?

LETTERS TO THE CEO In Applause No. 2, DCPA President & CEO Scott Shiller posed a question: How will we, as theatre professionals and audiences, find common ground for mobile devices in theatres? Below are excerpts from your responses. To read all of the comments, please visit denvercenter.org/news-center. Live theatre is a feast for the eyes and ears, meant to be consumed with relish…. If an audience member is fumbling for his/her phone…they are missing the flavor of their meal...not savoring each bite. More than that, they are interrupting MY enjoyment. — Barb D. No one should take out their device during live theatre performances. It is no different than getting out a book…. — Judi P. To appease those who feel they have to share their excitement, how about having a special photo op of actors in costume after the performance? — Mandelbrot The director, designers and production team have spent literally weeks creating a believable world. They wish to present this world to the best of their ability. They cannot do this if the audience is creating distractions with their lighted devices. — Sheila M. The rules [need to] be enforced more strictly during the performance but relaxed to allow for respectful photographs before the show and during intermission. DCPA does a nice job of setting up photo backdrops outside the theatre for those photographs. — DCPA Subscriber During the performance itself, actors can see and hear the audience. The flash of a camera is very distracting and can also be very dangerous. — Julie Mobile devices need to be “checked,” just like checking your coat. — Anne I tell people to stop with the phones and distractions.… I wish the ushers would take more of a role. — Cindy I don’t see any problem with taking pictures… before the performance starts or during intermission. The stage and curtain are usually wonderful works of art. And yes, I WOULD like to get a picture and post it all over social media. — Stacey In the past couple of years, I have noticed a growing number of patrons who check their phones during the performance. …there are instances (i.e. EMT, a sick child, etc.) where a cell phone is a lifeline; however, in those instances a patron should be courteous enough to move to a less disruptive area. — DCPA Subscriber

IN COLORADO’S CULTURE

I

In 1982 Colorado was in the midst of an economic recession, state arts funding was eliminated and the City of Denver couldn’t fill the gap. Our leading regional institutions — Art Museum, Botanic Gardens, Museum of Nature and Science, and Zoo — were forced to raise admission, curtail programming and seek out innovative alternatives. In the midst of this uncertain time, an idea took root — an idea that would revolutionize the cultural landscape of our entire region and serve as a national example for regional public arts funding. It’s the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) — a one penny on $10 sales tax collected throughout the seven-county metro region. Twenty-six years since the first penny was collected, the SCFD now distributes $52 million a year to 275 arts, science and cultural organizations. It has led Colorado to rank first in the nation for attendance at theatres and museums. It enables our arts community to contribute $1.85 billion (yes, that’s with a “B”) each year in economic activity. It allows us to welcome more than 14 million guests each year, employ 10,000 individuals and educate 4.25 million students. Moreover, the SCFD has turned competitors into colleagues in an effort to achieve together what they could not do alone. Poised to go before voters for reauthorization in 2016, the SCFD is working to secure arts funding into the future, to give back to metro area voters who have invested not only their money but also their trust, and to work collaboratively to maintain the seven-county metro area as a vibrant, cultural destination for years to come. Show your support of the SCFD today: www.UnitedForSCFD.com/ petition.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE

BY JOHN MOORE

I

It’s the Circle of Life: The Denver-born national touring production of Disney’s The Lion King is coming home a teenager. More than 220,000 attended the tour’s inaugural 10week run at The Buell Theatre 13 years ago, and studies estimated the visit provided a $58 million jolt to the area economy. Long before The Lion King’s 18 semi-trailers roared into downtown Denver in the weeks leading up to that historic opening night on April 26, 2002, “you could feel it everywhere you went,” said flutist Kay Ragsdale, one of four members of The Lion King tour who have been with it every step of the way. More than 25,000 tickets moved the day they went on sale to the public in November 2001, and every available seat was gone less than four days later. By the time the show finally opened, the city was at a fever pitch. “We had some jackets at the time that only had this little tiny lion’s head insignia, but everyone in the town knew what it was,” Ragsdale said. “It felt like everyone was participating in this event with us. Our opening night was an opening night for the entire city of Denver, and it could not have been more exciting.” Dance Captain Izell Blunt will never forget the day the cast was invited to sit in the otherwise empty Buell Theatre and watch as the technical crew previewed the show’s iconic sunrise for them. “This was the first time we had seen it,” said Blunt. “The sun is coming up. Pride Rock is coming out. The music is playing. Literally, we got chills just watching this phenomenon that we were about to be a part of.” With a worldwide gross of more than $7 billion, The Lion King last year became the most successful

franchise in entertainment history. That’s just the stage musical — figures do not include either proceeds from the animated film or merchandising. And to think, says creator Julie Taymor, The Lion King is a $7 billion fluke, considering that she was charged with turning a beloved animated children’s film into a revolutionary, magical piece of proudly experimental theatre that blends South African chants with ballet, performance art, human puppetry, masks, forced perspectives and shadow imagery. “I profoundly believe that people want something richer and deeper and will aspire to it,” Taymor said. “It’s a wonderful thing that so many people have seen The Lion King because it has informed many who have never seen theatre as to what theatre can possibly be.” The Lion King has now played before more than 80 million audience members in 22 productions around the world. The 18-year-old New York production is the thirdlongest running show in Broadway history, and is routinely the No. 1 show on Broadway in any given week. And it is showing no signs of slowing down. “It’s difficult not to become emotional at the realization of the show’s impact,” said Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions. “The goal back in the formative years was simply to tell the story purely and theatrically so that audiences could feel it in their heart.” Instead, it changed theatre in every conceivable way, from creative standards to technical demands to audience expectations moving forward. And perhaps its greatest impact on the creative community has been the ongoing explosion of employment opportunities it has provided for hundreds of actors of color.

THE LION KING:

“I think really The Lion King ushered in a completely new era of theatre,” said Ragsdale. Schumacher and Technical Director David Benken, who graduated from Colorado State University, credit famed theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh with setting a new standard for traveling shows that was fully embraced by Taymor.

“ It’s difficult not to become emotional at the realization of the show’s impact. The goal back in the formative years was to tell the story purely and theatrically so that audiences could feel it in their heart.” — THOMAS SCHUMACHER, PRESIDENT OF DISNEY THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS “The idea was that if you are going to do a tour, you are going to give people on the road the same show that you gave them on Broadway,” said Benken. “That was fairly radical for its time. Back then, before Disney Theatrical Productions, there were some seriously reduced versions of shows going out on the road.” Benken began adapting the Broadway show for the road two full years before it opened in Denver. And his great challenge was not solving how to fit what was then a record $15 million Broadway juggernaut into The Buell Theatre. “Denver has a pretty good theatre from a technical standpoint,” he said. His job was to solve how to fit the show into much smaller theatres all across America. “The biggest change that had to be made was to Pride Rock,” he said. “In New York, Pride Rock rises up out of the deck. That wasn’t practical for the road because basements don’t exist in theatres that are deep enough to accommodate it.” So after several months and several attempts, they hit on the solution: Pride Rock, an 18-foot set piece, slithers onto the stage and slowly rises as Simba and his father climb to its top. “So it still gives you the iconic moment,” Benken said, “and it actually enhanced Julie’s vision that everything should come back to this idea of the Circle of Life. I think the solution we came up with in Denver worked out quite well, and it is used all over the world now.” Only after Benken got the show up and running in Denver did he get a real sense of what he and his team had accomplished here. “Once we got the show open,” he said, “you could definitely feel that this was something special for Denver, and something special for us.”

Chris Van Vleet and Colton Maurer in A Christmas Story, The Musical

COMING UP FROM BROADWAY:

A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL Decades before the world got to see the embarrassingly relatable trials of young Ralphie in the beloved movie A Christmas Story, radio host Jean Shepherd was telling his tales over the airwaves. These seminal slices of life would later be compiled into the book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. Here’s the story behind the stories that led to leg lamps, pink bunny pajamas and flagpole fiascos: • Shepherd never considered himself a writer and was reluctant to put pen to paper to compile his popular radio shows. His friend and fellow author Shel Silverstein recorded him telling his stories, transcribed them and the two edited them down into the final product. • The first adaptations of his shows were published in the unlikeliest of places — Playboy magazine • Each chapter in In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash covers a different story told by the main character Ralph as he reminisces with a friend about his childhood. “Duel in the Snow,” “The Counterfeit Secret Circle Member Gets the Message,” “My Old Man and the Lascivious Special Award That Heralded the Birth of Pop Art” and “Grover Dill and the Tasmanian Devil” would eventually become the premise of the movie. • You probably already know what Jean Shepherd sounds like — he put his voice talents to good use as the narrator in A Christmas Story. • A Christmas Story wasn’t the only film adaptation of the novel. The 1994 movie A Summer Story plucks more chapters from the book to pick up where A Christmas Story left off. Though the characters were recast, Shepherd still acted as the nostalgic narrator. A Christmas Story, The Musical will bring the holiday spirit to The Buell Theatre from Dec 16 – 27. Just remember, no licking frozen light poles at home.

TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theater and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Their next three works together were much more successful—Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita. Tim has also worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), and Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess). LEBO M (Additional Music and Lyrics, Additional Vocal Score, Vocal Arrangements, Choral Director) is known as the “voice and spirit of The Lion King.” Once a teenage singer in Soweto, the Grammy Award winner and Tony nominee’s music brings audiences to tears with hauntingly inspiring African rhythms and melodies. Lebo’s talents have been hailed by the worldwide press in superlatives that might describe the most delightfully poetic of musical deities. Since his arrival in America, Lebo has attracted music industry giants such as Quincy Jones, Jimmy Cliff, and Hans Zimmer as mentors, allies, and collaborators. Lebo has performed and produced four albums, Rhythm of the Pride Lands (Disney), Deeper Meaning (Gallo), and The Lion King (Japanese and Hamburg cast recordings). Other credits include The Power of One, Back on the Block, and Listen Up with Quincy Jones; the feature films Outbreak (Warner Bros.), Congo (Warner Bros.), and Born to Be Wild (Paramount); and the Disney television special People. He has performed on the Academy Awards and the Essence Awards Show, with Vanessa Redgrave at Kthimi-The Return in Kosovo, and been honored by Artists for a Free South Africa. MARK MANCINA (Additional Music and Lyrics, Music Produced for the Stage, Additional Score). A Tony nominee and multi-platinum, three-time Grammy Award– winning composer, he was an obvious choice to produce the music for the stage production of The Lion King, having arranged and produced songs for the blockbuster animated feature film, for which he received both Grammy and American Music awards in 1994. The film also spawned the hit album Rhythm of the Pride Lands, for which Mr. Mancina co-wrote, arranged and produced three tracks, including “He Lives in You” and “Shadowland,” which are featured in the stage production. Ranked among the upper echelons of film composers, his credits include mega-hits Training Day, Speed, Twister, Bad Boys, Tarzan, and Brother Bear among many others. Most recent feature films include August Rush and Shooter. ROGER ALLERS (Book) makes his Broadway debut with co-author Irene Mecchi, with this Tony-nominated book, adapted from the animated feature, which he co-directed. Mr. Allers has been instrumental in shaping

the structure and dialogue for many Disney animated features since 1988, including Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Oliver and Company, Rescuers Down Under, Prince and the Pauper, and the computer-animated movie, Tron. He directed the Academy Award nominated short The Little Matchgirl for Disney and co-directed the 2006 animated feature Open Season for Sony Studios. Prior to working with Disney, he created animation on children’s programs and features for studios in Boston, Toronto, and Tokyo. He is currently writing and directing an animated adaptation of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. IRENE MECCHI (Book) began her association with Disney in March 1992, when she wrote Recycle Rex, an animated short, which won the 1994 Environmental Media Award. Irene is a co-writer of Disney’s animated features The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Hercules. Along with coauthor Roger Allers, she received a 1998 Tony nomination for writing the book for The Lion King. Irene wrote the teleplay for Annie, directed by Rob Marshall. Irene shares a writing credit on Disney Pixar’s Brave and is currently adapting the Warners’ 1954 A Star is Born film as a stage musical, as well as developing a project with Lucasfilm. GARTH FAGAN (Choreographer) is the recipient of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Choreography and the 2000 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer (London, U.K.) as well as the Drama Desk Award, the Astaire Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for his work with The Lion King. DOWNTOWN DENVER’S TOP DESTINATION FOR MORE THAN FIVE DECADES

L “ It’s about creating a meaningful relationship on multiple levels with our different merchants and with all the different programs and areas of the Denver Center.” — JEFF HERMANSON, LARIMER ASSOCIATES PRESIDENT & CEO

denvercenter.org

Larimer Square has come a long way in 50 years. In 1965, a once-charming block had fallen into disrepair. Demolition crews were just weeks away from scrubbing buildings that had stood since before the turn of the century. Today, due to intense preservation efforts, Larimer Square is recognized as Denver’s most beautiful and historic block, a premier shopping and dining district that is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015. Larimer Associates President & CEO, Jeff Hermanson, has taken great care to make it that way, spending the past 20 years attracting locally-owned, independent boutiques, clubs and restaurants to the block while preserving its beauty and charm. Larimer Square provides visitors a unique experience that complements the cultural offerings of its neighbor, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). “Larimer Square has found the perfect partner in the DCPA,” said Hermanson. “The unique combination of theater, music, nightlife, dining and shopping that our two special places provide is unrivaled.” Larimer Square and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts share a strong commitment to the arts. The Square has distinguished itself from other districts by creating a place for independently minded shops and restaurants, giving entrepreneurs the artistic freedom and support they need to make their business dreams a reality. At the same time, Larimer Square offers an experience that complements the artistic and creative sensibilities of the DCPA and hosts multiple events each year to promote the arts including the popular Denver Chalk Art Festival and Art of Winter. “It’s about creating a meaningful relationship on multiple levels with our different merchants and with all the different programs and areas of the Denver Center,” said Hermanson. “We similarly support the many artists on Larimer Square. Our chefs, bartenders and merchants are some of the most creative in the city.” In addition to the DCPA, Larimer Square is a proud supporter of the Downtown Denver Partnership, the Larimer Arts Association, LoDo District, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Rocky Mountain PBS, Volunteers of America and more. “Denver is in the middle of an entrepreneurial and cultural transformation,” continued Hermanson. “It’s been amazing to witness and an honor to be a part of this exciting change with Larimer Associates and our partners at the Denver Center.”

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IN THE HEART OF SONOMA COUNTY Crafting balanced, quality wines for every wine lover. Clos Du Bois has partnered with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts for many years. We truly believe that wine and the arts go hand in hand. Both create an individual and unique experience for all to enjoy. In 1974, Frank Woods founded Clos du Bois with a vision of blending fine French winemaking techniques with the best Sonoma County grapes to craft a range of balanced, approachable wines. Year after year, our wines have been recognized by both wine critics and wine lovers. Just over ten years later, in 1986, Wine Spectator named Clos du Bois “California’s best kept secret,” confirming our place as one of Sonoma County’s premier wineries. Today, we continue to create approachable, elegant wines, from everyday favorites to small-production jewels, always with Frank Woods’ vision as our guide.

Sustainability is a way of life Sustainability means different things to different people, but at Clos du Bois, it’s part and parcel of who we are. Our commitment to sustainability is what has allowed us to thrive for 40 years. And it’s what will help us continue to craft quality Sonoma County wines for many vintages to come.
