SIGHTLINE

WWelcome to Hamilton! Whether this is your first time to see this groundbreaking production or you are coming back for an encore, this engagement is perfectly timed to bridge our upcoming election. As such, we join Ham4Progress and When We All Vote to encourage your active participation in this election season.

At the DCPA, we’re delighted to have recently hosted the national touring premiere of KIMBERLY AKIMBO, this third engagement of Hamilton, and the upcoming refreshed take on a bastion of theatre, Funny Girl.

These major Broadway blockbusters are several of many reasons the DCPA has withstood the impacts of COVID, supply chain delays and escalating costs. In recent weeks, we’ve been asked what sets us apart from our peers around the country who have not been as fortunate. Here are three reasons among others:

SCFD: If you live in the seven-county metro area, you contribute to the health of our cultural community through a voterapproved one-tenth of one percent sales tax, otherwise known as the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District. Funds collected are redistributed to nearly 300 arts and cultural organizations that, in turn, create vibrant communities in which we live.

Programming: Forty-five years ago, the DCPA was conceived of as a multi-disciplinary organization dedicated to theatre in all its forms. Today, we have six lines of programming that o er a multitude of options: Theatre Company and Theatre for Young Audiences local productions, presentations and original Cabaret productions and O -Center immersive experiences, Education classes and Broadway tours, the income of which helps o set the costs of our other programming lines.

Patrons & Volunteers: From our volunteer Board of Trustees and usher corps to our students and audiences, your presence here today helps provide a firm foundation to attract new tours, launch world premieres and cultivate new audiences. Thank you for your investment in all that the DCPA has to o er. We are truly grateful.

Warm regards,

Sinden

HISTORY HAS ITS EYES ON YOU” BEHIND THE REFERENCES IN HAMILTON

I

In addition to the well-known cast of principle characters featured in Hamilton there are dozens of references to other historical figures. Here is a closer look at these individuals in order of reference:

Sam Adams

Referenced in: “Aaron Burr, Sir”

Line: “I’m John Laurens in the place to be! Two pints o’ Sam Adams, but I’m workin’ on three, uh!”

“Founding Father” and political philosopher who was the second cousin of President John Adams. Samuel Adams founded the “Sons of Liberty” in 1765 to fight taxation from the British government. Thomas Jefferson credited Adams with being a leading figure in steering the colonies towards independence. However, you may know him as the face of the Boston Beer Company.

Admiral Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe

Referenced in: “Right Hand Man”

Line: “British Admiral Howe’s got troops on the water. Thirty-two thousand troops in New York harbor.”

British naval officer who commanded troops in The Seven Years’ War, The American Revolution and The French Revolution. This line refers to Britain’s strategy of capturing major cities by blockading the coastline. They did so successfully, seizing Long Island in August 1776 and New York City the following month.

Nathanael Greene & Henry Knox

Referenced in: “Right Hand Man”

Line: “Nathanael Greene and Henry Knox wanted to hire you…”

Both were Continental Army military officers that served under George Washington during the American Revolution. Nathanael Greene declined an appointment by Washington to serve in the first presidential cabinet and it was Henry Knox who ended up accepting, becoming the first Secretary of War, a position which he held from 1789-1794.

Thomas Conway

Referenced in: “Meet Me Inside”

Line: “Charles Lee, Thomas Conway. These men take your name and they rake it through the mud.”

Major General in the Continental Army who organized the Conway Cabal; a group of senior officers who tried to have George Washington removed as commander-inchief during the American Revolution.

Levi Weeks

Referenced in: “Non-Stop”

Line: “Our client Levi Weeks is innocent, call your first witness.”

The defendant in the first recorded murder trial in U.S. history. Weeks was accused of killing “Elma” Sands, a young woman he had been courting at the time. With the aid of family connections and wealth he was able to hire some of the most prominent attorneys in New York for his defense team: Henry Brockholst Livingston, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Much to public disapproval, Weeks was acquitted after less than five minutes of jury deliberation. Although the show depicts the

trial taking place prior to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, it actually took place in 1800.

John Barker Church

Referenced in: “Non-Stop”

Line: “I am sailing o to London. I’m accompanied by someone who always pays. I have found a wealthy husband who will keep me in comfort for all of my days.”

English businessman who eloped to Europe with Angelica Schuyler in 1777 knowing that Philip Schuyler would not give their union his blessing. Church had his own duel with Aaron Burr in 1799 in which neither party was injured. An experienced dueler himself, it was his set of pistols that were used in the duels that killed both Philip and Alexander Hamilton.

John Jay

Referenced in: “Non-Stop”

Line: “In the end, they wrote 85 essays, in the span of six months. Jon Jay got sick after writing 5.”

First Chief Justice of the United States and second Governor of New York. Using the shared pseudonym, Publius, John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison advocated for a stronger centralized government in “The Federalist Papers.” They felt the current structure under the “Articles of Confederation” was too weak and could not be sustained. The topic of most of Jay’s essays dealt with the dangers of foreign power and influence.

Maria & James Reynolds

Referenced in: “Say No to This”

Line: “You’ve never seen a bastard orphan more in need of a break. Longing for Angelica. Missing my wife. That’s when Miss Maria Reynolds walked into my life.”

Alexander Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds is considered the first political sex scandal in U.S. history. Upon learning of their encounters, James Reynolds blackmailed Hamilton for nearly a year. In response, Hamilton published “The Reynolds Pamphlet,” making his exploits public and effectively debilitating his political career and personal life. When Maria finally decided to separate from James she hired a prominent New York attorney as her divorce lawyer: Aaron Burr.

Philip Schuyler

Referenced in: “Schuyler Defeated”

Line: “Look! Grandpa’s in the paper! War hero Philip Schuyler loses Senate seat to young upstart Aaron Burr!”

Served as a general in the American Revolution and spent nearly a decade as a New York State Senator. He also served in the first United States Congress as a New York Senator for two years before being unseated by Aaron Burr.

William P. Van Ness & Nathaniel Pendelton

Referenced in: “The World Was Wide Enough”

Line: “We rode across the Hudson at dawn. My Friend William P. Van Ness signed on as my-Number two! Hamilton arrived with his crew: Nathaniel Pendelton and a doctor that he knew”

Both William P. Van Ness and Nathaniel Pendelton were United States District Judges who served as the “second” for Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, respectively. In the aftermath they issued a joint-statement regarding the proceedings. Although they could not reach consensus on who fired first, it is widely accepted that two shots were fired.

COMING UP FROM BROADWAY FUNNY GIRL

Welcome to the musical comedy sensation — Funny Girl ! Fanny Brice always dreamed of life on stage, yet everyone told her she’d never be a star. But then something funny happened — she proved them wrong.

Featuring an iconic score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, a revised book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original by Isobel Lennart, and direction from Michael Mayer, this love letter to the theatre has the whole shebang — including a reclamation of tap dancing.

Funny Girl ’s choreographer Ellenore Scott is joined by tap-dancing specialist, Ayodel Casel, who made it her mission to reclaim the narrative of tap dance and its roots in Black culture, transforming the numbers into dizzying, rhythmic heaven.

For Funny Girl ’s director, modernizing the Broadway revival meant inviting overlooked influences. “All of the artists in the room are very committed to creating a show that is responsive to the moment we’re living in,” Mayer said to The New York Times. “Funny Girl is about a woman who didn’t look like everyone else, didn’t sound like everyone else and said, ‘I’m going to make my life what I want it to be, come hell or high water.’ [Casel] has done exactly the same thing.”

Don’t miss Casel’s innovative rhythms onstage when Funny Girl plays the Buell Theatre December 10-22, making it the perfect holiday treat.

BOBBY G AWARDS: Students in the Spotlight

LLast May, the Buell Theatre was packed with students and educators, plus their family and friends from across the state for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ annual Bobby G High School Musical Theatre Awards, which celebrates the best in the state’s high school musical theatre programs.

Each of the five nominated schools in the Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical category took the stage for a song, followed by a medley sung by the ten Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role nominees.

After receiving 13 total nominations, Castle View High School’s production of Frozen took home five awards. “Castle View Theater Company holds some of the most supportive, creative, and passionate students I’ve ever worked with,” student Leah Taylor said. “This was a huge opportunity for our school and we as a company couldn’t be more excited to perform with each other.”

Taylor was nominated for her leading performance in Frozen alongside her costar, Ashton Showers. Jake Larson from Arvada West High School, Logan Richardson from CIVA Charter High School, Tate Dewhurst from Denver North High School, Charlotte Hearn from Denver School of the Arts, Hannah Schnorr from Fossil Ridge High School, and Nathan Adams from Vista PEAK Preparatory joined them as nominees for Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role.

Gabi Karl from ThunderRidge High School and Caleb Kezeor from Woodland Park High School took home top honors in the Leading Role category. Then they headed to New York where they represented Colorado in the National High School Musical Theatre “Jimmy” Awards where they participated in workshops with Broadway professionals and performed for a chance to win the highly anticipated competition.

Karl was thrilled to represent Colorado at the Jimmys. “Performing is always such an amazing experience to me,” she explained. “Once I’m on stage, I sink into my character and let my muscle memory and love for theatre do the work.” Karl’s award-winning performance as Janis in ThunderRidge’s production of Mean Girls: High School Edition was bolstered by a stellar cast and creative team. After receiving eight nominations, the school won three awards, including the coveted Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical.

It was an exciting evening for hundreds of students and educators, and the DCPA is proud to recognize the amazing work of these programs and the importance of arts education.

Back to the Future: The Musical

Buell Theatre

24 / 25 BROADWAY

WELCOME TO MUSICAL COMEDY HEAVEN!

Jan 22 – Feb 9

Buell Theatre

Featuring one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, an updated book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, tap choreography by Ayodele Casel, choreography by Ellenore Scott, and direction from Michael Mayer, this love letter to the theatre has the whole shebang!

The sensational Broadway revival dazzles with celebrated classic songs, including “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” This bittersweet comedy is the story of the indomitable Fanny Brice, a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage. Everyone told her she’d never be a star, but then something funny happened — she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights of Broadway.

Great Scott! Back to the Future, the beloved, cinematic classic is now a Broadway musical with its destination set for Denver in 2025.

Winner of the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, four WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Musical, and the Broadway World Award for Best New Musical, Back to the Future: The Musical is adapted for the stage by the iconic film’s creators Bob Gale (Back to the Future trilogy) and Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) and directed by the Tony Award®-winner John Rando with original music by multi-Grammy® winners Alan Silvestri (Avengers: Endgame) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”), alongside hit songs from the movie including “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel,” and “Back in Time.”

& Juliet

Jun 4 – 15

Buell Theatre

Created by the Emmy®-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek,” this hilarious new musical flips the script on the greatest love story ever told. & Juliet asks: what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo? Get whisked away on a fabulous journey as she ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love — her way.

Juliet’s new story bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name, including “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar,” “Baby One More Time,” “Larger Than Life,” “That’s The Way It Is,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” — all from the genius songwriter/ producer behind more #1 hits than any other artist this century. Break free of the balcony scene and get into this romantic comedy that proves there’s life after Romeo. The only thing tragic would be missing it.

When Marty McFly finds himself transported back to 1955 in a time machine built by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, he accidentally changes the course of history. Now he’s in a race against time to fix the present, escape the past, and send himself... back to the future. When Back to the Future hits 88mph, it’ll change musical theatre history forever.

Some Like It Hot

Jul 8 – 20 Buell Theatre

Winner of 4 Tony Awards®, including Best Choreography and Best Costumes, and the Grammy Award® for Best Musical Theater Album, Some Like It Hot is “A Super-Sized, All-Out SongAnd-Dance Spectacular!” – The New York Times Set in Chicago when Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement, Some Like It Hot is the “glorious, big, high-kicking” (Associated Press) story of two musicians forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they catch a cross-country train for the life-chasing, life-changing trip of a lifetime.

And what a trip it is! With its irresistible combination of heart and laughs, song and dance, Some Like It Hot won more theater awards than any shows in its season, and was named Best Musical by the Drama Desk, The Drama League, and the Outer Critics Circle. No wonder Deadline calls it “a tap-dancing, razzle-dazzling embrace of everything you love about musical theater.”

Buell Theatre

A THEATRICAL EVENT UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE!

Told with jaw-dropping visuals, world class puppetry and exquisite stagecraft, Lolita Chakrabarti’s stage adaptation of LIFE OF PI creates a breathtaking journey that will leave you filled with awe and joy.

THE WIZ Apr 8 – 26 Buell Theatre

Gutenberg! The Musical!

Nov 2 – May 4

Garner Galleria Theatre

The Tony® Award-winning Best Musical that took the world by storm is back.

THE WIZ returns “home” to stages across America in an all-new Broadway tour, the first one in 40 years.

Baltimore Sun raves “Powerhouse performances. Stunning choreography. Visionary sets” and Chicago Tribune proclaims THE WIZ is “An eye-popping and high-intensity revival!

This groundbreaking twist on The Wizard of Oz changed the face of Broadway — from its iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and 70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world.

Everybody rejoice — this dynamite infusion of ballet, jazz, and modern pop brings a whole new groove to easing on down the road!

In this two-person musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new, ill-advised project — a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them that elusive Broadway contract.

LEGACY GIVING

Leave a legacy. Make a pledge that safeguards the future of theatre. By doing so, you’ll become a member of the Encore Society, a dedicated group of patrons who have made long-term commitments to the DCPA in their estate plans. HERE’S HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Take advantage of tax-wise giving: Speak with your tax advisor about transferring appreciated stock directly to the DCPA, or direct part or all of the RMD from your IRA directly to us. We pay no capital gains, so your direct transfer contributions often go further than personally taking your distribution and making donations out of the proceeds.

Make a gift in your will or revocable trust:

Give a tax-free gift for any DCPA designation that can be updated at any time.

Designate the DCPA as a beneficiary:

Name the DCPA as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, IRA, insurance policy, or other account.

As a member of our Encore Society, you’ll receive invitations to special events, access to discounted show tickets, and more member-only perks!

THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY

Theatre for Young Audiences offers performances, affordable tickets & Storytimes

GGerald and Piggie are as different as an elephant and pig can be, but they have three things in common — their friendship, the color pink and their love of reading!

Acclaimed author Mo Willems’ popular book series for early readers comes to the Weeks Conservatory Theatre in Elephant & Piggie’s “We are in a Play! ”. This charming musical about the wary elephant Gerald and his throw-caution-tothe-wind best friend Piggie will delight children PreK through third grade from October 18 through December 22.

In addition to school groups and public performances, DCPA Education will offer 800 $5 dollar tickets to community partners on October 27, November 10 and November 23. Additionally, the cast will host free Storytimes at area libraries to bring the joy of live theatre and children’s literature to kids and their caregivers.

“Children around the world love Elephant & Piggie,” said DCPA Executive Director of Education & Community Engagement Allison Watrous, “and we are delighted to bring this story to life for young audiences.

“Through our commitment to broaden access, the DCPA has developed a variety of events and ticket options that allow us to welcome new audiences into our family. From $5 Community Tickets to free Storytimes, we are forging new friendships throughout the region inspired by the love between an adorable elephant and an exuberant pig.

“We invite our community to join us for this delightful musical in the Weeks Theatre as well as attend a free Storytime.”

OUR GUIDING VISION

MUSIC THERAPY CAN CHANGE THE BRAIN AND MAKE PEOPLE FEEL BETTER

HHave you ever listened to your favorite song and instantly felt better? This response, said Angela Wibben, Board-Certified Music Therapist at UCHealth, can be used to care for patients.

“Music and the arts are inherently therapeutic,” said Wibben who is also a classically trained percussionist. “There is no music center of the brain. When we use music interventions for rehabilitation, music activates a cross-covering of neural networks.”

While the use of music in therapy dates back centuries, UCHealth began to utilize it in 2016 as part of person-centered, collaborative care. Now UCHealth has tripled its efforts. “Until the Spring of 2024,” Wibben continued, “The University of Colorado Hospital had one staff music therapist for the entire hospital. With the support of our comprehensive data, our healthcare community, and generous philanthropy from donors, we have been able to expand the team to three board-certified music therapists on staff.”

What began in the World War II era to treat individuals in the midst of trauma has developed into a rigorous curriculum. “Now we have our own national board certification, and in order to be a music therapist you need to earn at least an undergraduate degree in music therapy,” said Wibben, who has worked in the field for 12 years, eight of those at UCHealth.

“Music therapy has been shown to improve the quality of life of our patients as well as…to help them heal and support their physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and social goals,” said Wibben. “During a music therapy session our patients may talk about lyrics to explore their meaning in their lives, write songs to express emotions, improvise on instruments to decrease anxiety, use the qualities of rhythm and pitch to help them relearn how to speak after a neurologic injury, or listen to live music to help relax or decrease pain.”

However, when Wibben comes into a room with a cart of instruments, not everyone understands what’s going on.

“I usually start with a broad approach. I ask what is the most challenging part about being in the hospital. For some it’s the pain, the anxiety, and for others it’s being away from social supports and communities, pets or loved ones,” she explained. But music “can help empower people in their healing process.”

It doesn’t matter if you are a musician or have a favorite genre. The real key, she said, is to ask people what music they love and let the comfort and joy of the song course through them. That’s where the healing comes in.

His commitment has put him on the road with America’s top traveling productions, including MJ the musical, TINA — The Tina Turner Musical and SIX. “Telling the stories of these extraordinary performers and showing our viewers the long hours behind the scenes and the intense effort these shows require is one of my great honors,” Thomas says. “I’m very proud to represent CBS Colorado and showcase all the incredible talent that the DCPA brings to our theatres throughout the year.”
