As Charles Dickens wrote in A Christmas Carol: “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.” After enjoying Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Cirque Éloize - Hotel and our own version of Tiny Tim’s heart-warming tale, we sincerely hope that your good humor is, indeed, contagious. At this time of year it is important to be thankful. First and foremost, we are grateful for our artists and our audiences. We recognize that one is made better by the other. Our artists — on and off stage — thrive on the live exchange at each performance. Likewise, our audiences are rewarded by plays and musicals that provide memories to last a lifetime. Thank you for your continued patronage. We also appreciate our Board of Trustees who give generously of their time, talents and resources. I am especially proud to recognize our Chairman Martin Semple, his wife, Jo, and longtime Trustee Isabelle Clark, who have invested significantly in the future of theatre through the capital campaign (see page 20). Additionally, the DCPA is fortunate to have a remarkable team. Each and every individual demonstrates a deepseated passion for the tremendous work on our stages, in our classrooms, at our events and throughout our community. Recent successes include the Theatre Company’s incredibly well-received production of Oklahoma!, Broadway’s North American tour launch of Dear Evan Hansen and the sold-out run of Corduroy, our Theatre for Young Audiences production that welcomed more than 25,000 children. Much like Scrooge, who looks to the past, present and future, so too must we look forward. We’ve just announced five titles that will be featured in our Colorado New Play Summit (see page 24), which features playwrights who are shaping the future of the American theatre. Little-known item: The Irving Berlin song that comes closest to epitomizing Christmas, the song that evokes glistening tree-tops, children listening for sleigh bells in the snow — that song — was written by Irving Berlin in the late 1930s sitting by the pool at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa under a full, hot sun. The first verse was a tongue-in-cheek barb at a wealthy Los Angeleno pining for a traditional Christmas under palm trees in 80-degree heat. Berlin smartly dropped the joke, the verse and the irony — a good thing or “White Christmas” might never have made it to the top of the nation’s emotional chart — as it did. But then this immigrant son of impoverished immigrant Jews from Siberia was nothing if not shrewd. Talented, too. He may have acquired his love of music from his father — a cantor forced to work in a grocery store to keep his wife and six children alive. And yet the son played piano only by ear (lessons were not on the financial radar), living his entire life with an astonishing absence of musical skills.

“I heard Berlin play the piano back in vaudeville days and found his harmony notably inept,” wrote Alec Wilder in his 1972 book, American Popular Song. What Berlin had instead is what Wilder calls “some mastery of his inner ear” that enabled him to compose melodies “with his natural, intuitive harmonic sense at work in his head, but not in his hands.” Other things he had were an innate doggedness and a nose for opportunity that rarely steered him wrong. As an unsupervised kid on New York’s Lower East Side, this young scrapper hustled junk for pennies, sold newspapers, joined gangs briefly and eventually left home after his father’s death to try to make it as a singer on the streets of New York. Berlin got himself hired at various cafés around the Bowery, including the Pelham, doing parodies of popular hits. A rivalry among establishments triggered the writing of his first hit: “Marie of Sunny Italy,” earning him the grand sum of 37 cents — and prompting a name change from

Israel Baline, the name he was born with, to Irving Berlin. (Some say it was printer’s error that Berlin chose not to correct.) But in 1911, he wrote “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” and the country jumped. More than a million copies were sold in a matter of months. Irving Berlin was off and running, branching out, writing musicals that are still on Broadway lexicon (Annie Get Your Gun, Call Me Madam), movies (the incomparable Top Hat among them) and a host of songs now forever woven into the American psyche: “Easter Parade,” “Supper Time,” “A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody,” “Always,” “Blue Skies,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “How Deep Is The Ocean,” “Puttin’ On The Ritz,” “Let’s Face The Music And Dance,” “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better,” “You Can’t Get A Man With A Gun,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business.” In the end, it was poverty that proved to be Berlin’s best teacher. He learned the value of money early and to the point of stinginess. In an article for the City Journal, Stefan Kanafer related that as Berlin hawked newspapers on a downtown pier in 1902, he was accidentally knocked into the East River by a loading crane, rescued “and packed off to Gouverneur Hospital for further ministrations. An hour later, as the young newsie slept, a nurse pried open his clenched hand. In it: five copper coins. He remained tightfisted for the rest of his 101 years.” That judgment may be a bit harsh. As one of the most patriotic of American composers — which Berlin turned out to be — he refused to profit from his patriotism and gave away the proceeds of “God Bless America” (surely the most patriotic — and profitable — song of all time) to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America in perpetuity, while contributing royalties from other wartime compositions to the Navy Relief, Red Cross, March of Dimes and various bond drives. The first public performance of the song “White Christmas,” was reportedly by Bing Crosby, who sang it in the movie Holiday Inn. “White Christmas” spent 11 weeks at the top of the charts and the Guinness Book of Records lists Crosby’s recording as the biggest hit single of all time, with an estimated 100 million copies sold. The song re-emerged in 1954 in the immensely popular movie that bore its name again featuring Crosby, this time with Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. In adapting the movie into a large-scale musical, some adjustments had to be made. Enter David Ives and Paul Blake as the writers who expanded the storyline and incorporated big, large-scale musical dance numbers imbued with exciting tap and jazz. Given that Berlin conceived of the song poolside, it might seem fitting that the stage world premiere took place at the St. Louis Muny… an outdoor summer theatre festival that regularly tops 100 degrees with comparable humidity. So when the snow fell on stage, the audience experienced a subliminal, if not literal, cooldown. And that snow is a crowd-pleaser. The White Christmas team decided that pure stagecraft best served the scene, using an old-fashioned method for making snow — tissue paper cut into a mixture of ½-inch and ¾-inch squares. The confetti is then packed into a long tube of fabric cut with slits and affixed with two ropes on either end, which are tugged back and forth by stagehands to create evenly falling snow. The result is a Broadway musical that is mesmerizing and memorable. A perfect complement to every holiday season whether you’re at the Arizona Biltmore, a Vermont inn or The Buell Theatre. This reprint of a 2012 story has been updated to reflect information about the current production which is making its first Broadway touring appearance in Denver.

TINY TIM LEAVES AN IMPACT ON ACTORS

Playing Tiny Tim can be Fezziwigs of fun for any kid actor. You get to miss school and perform in a play with a bunch of cool people who become your second family during the holidays. Then again: You have to miss school, you work a grueling schedule and you are largely apart from your real family for much of the season. Bah, humbug. Still, three actors who have played the iconic child in ghosts of A Christmas Carols past wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Charlie Korman, who holds the record for having played Tiny Tim in four of the DCPA Theatre Company’s 27 seasonal stagings, hasn’t missed a production as an actor or audience member since 2009. “It’s fun to see the cast that I worked with over the years grow with the show,” said Korman, now a freshman at Denver East High School. “After seven years in the show [including playing other roles], I know every line of dialogue. So it’s fun to point out any changes each year.” As all children age into adults, the impact of Charles Dickens’ timeless 1843 cautionary tale of seasonal spiritual renewal deepens. Some perspective: As a boy, Dickens himself was indentured into a poorhouse when his father went bankrupt and was imprisoned for debt. The kids who lived during the time of A Christmas Carol entered the workforce as early as age three and typically worked 16-hour days alongside their parents. Only 20 percent ever had any schooling. And through the bully pulpit of his stories, Dickens shamed the wealthy for their unwillingness to set up what we would call employee welfare programs. Tiny Tim is, of course, the sickly boy whose lifeor-death fate Dickens places squarely in the hands and heart of his father’s skinflint boss, Ebenezer Scrooge. Simply put, the three ghosts tell Scrooge to give his accountant a health-care plan, or the death of his son will be on Scrooge’s drooping shoulders. Instead, Tim’s chronic illness ultimately fuels Scrooge’s transformation into a better man. “I believe Tiny Tim represents hope and the purity that lives in all of us,” said third-year A Christmas Carol director Melissa Rain Anderson. “Tim is a true hero. Despite his illness, he believes in the goodness the world has to offer.” Ben Larned, one of only three actors who have played Tim over multiple years (200203), is now a 24-year-old artist living in Los Angeles. When he was eight, he was asked by The Denver Post to take a shot at summarizing the story’s ultimate message. “I play a role where I don’t complain,” young Larned said then. “And now I think I might try not to complain so much.” Sixteen years later, he was asked the same question. “It’s incredible that this centuries-old story still feels relevant,” Larned said. “The message is timeless, even if its

truth isn’t as simple as it seemed to me at that age. It’s important to remember that there’s always time to change.” Korman, still only 14, grew up in and around the Denver Center. He attended his first DCPA summer theatre camp as a toddler. “It was mostly playing games, but it made me a theatre-lover for life,” he said. When Korman was five, he was encouraged to audition to play Tiny Tim, and he soon owned the role. At nine, he summed up the experience by saying, “It’s a good way to spend the holiday season because I am in the Christmas spirit for two months.” Korman would later play featured roles in intense Theatre Company stagings of Lord of the Flies, Frankenstein and The Who’s Tommy. “I’ve been in a number of dark shows since A Christmas Carol,” said Korman, “and so I always look forward to the feeling of hope the story brings me. It has such an important message. That is to care for other people, and to love and be kind.” Like Larned, many of the 20 actors who have played Tiny Tim in Denver have grown into adult artists. Boulder native Luke Eberl (1995) is an actor and filmmaker best known for playing Birn in the 2001 film Planet of the Apes and making his own film called Choose Connor, after which he was described by MovieMaker Magazine as “One of the 10 Young Americans to Watch.” Elias Harger, who played Tim in 2015, was soon after cast to play Max on the 2016 Netflix series “Fuller House,” the sequel to “Full House.” For three seasons, he has played the grandson of Danny, played by Bob Saget. Last year, Anderson cast nine-year-old Peyton Goossen as the first female actor to play Tiny Tim for the Denver Center. “I was a little unsure what to make of that at first because I didn’t know it was that big of a deal,” Goossen says now. This year’s staging features Lucas Turner in the role. As the Denver Center’s third African American to be cast as Tiny Tim, Lucas will be playing in this holiday tradition for the last time before the play goes on hiatus for the renovation of The Stage Theatre.

Having the freedom to explore backstage is one of my most vivid and joyful memories from A Christmas Carol.

PLAYWRIGHT RICHARD HELLESEN (Playwright/ Adaptor). Richard Hellesen is pleased to be returning to the DCPA Theatre Company where his play Kingdom premiered in 1999. His other plays include Moonshadow, Once in Arden, the book for David de Berry’s musical A Cappella, and two recent works for Ford’s Theatre in Washington, One Destiny and The Road From Appomattox. Among his two dozen shorter plays are five finalists in Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Ten-Minute Play Contest; his one-act Dos Corazones appears in the collection of Best Ten-Minute Plays for Two Actors by Smith & Kraus. THEATRE COMPANY LEADERSHIP TEAM CHRIS COLEMAN (Artistic Director) is passionate about the connection between stories and community. He joined the DCPA Theatre Company as Artistic Director in November of 2017. Chris spent the prior 18 years as Artistic Director for Portland Center Stage in Oregon. Under his leadership, PCS renovated the city’s historic Armory into a new home, saw annual attendance nearly double, workshopped 52 new plays that went onto productions at over 100 theaters around the U.S. and U.K., and became a national leader in how theaters engage with their community. In 1988, Chris founded Actor’s Express in Atlanta (in the basement of an old church), a company that continues to be a cultural force in the Southeast today. He has directed at major theaters across the country, including Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Alliance Theater, Dallas Theater Center, Center Stage Baltimore, Actors Theatre of Louisville, ACT/Seattle, the Asolo, Pittsburgh Public, 59E59, and New York Theater Workshop. He and his husband, actor/writer Rodney Hicks, live in Stapleton with their 100 lb. English blockhead yellow lab and their 18 lb. terrier mix. CHARLES VARIN (Managing Director) and his team are responsible for the administrative, financial and business operations for Theatre Company and Off-Center productions and other artistic initiatives. Since joining the Theatre Company in 2006, he has played a major role in executing the artistic vision of the organization and facilitating the production of shows such as Sweet & Lucky, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Sense & Sensibility The Musical, The 12, Sweeney Todd with DeVotchKa and many more. Thirty years ago, A Bronx Tale debuted in Los Angeles as a oneman play. Written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, A Bronx Tale was a coming-of-age story about Calogero Anello, a young Italian-American growing up in the Bronx who gets involved with the mafia despite his father’s warnings. Loosely based on Palminteri’s own life, it was a tale about respect, loyalty, love and above all else, family. The one-man play garnered a lot of Hollywood interest and, one night, Robert De Niro attended a performance. Impressed by the show, he approached Palminteri with an offer to buy the rights and make A Bronx Tale into a movie starring both Palminteri and De Niro. Palminteri gladly accepted and A Bronx Tale debuted on screen in 1993. Since then, it has become what is now considered one of the greatest gangster films in history. Twenty-three years later, Palminteri and De Niro decided to team up and adapt A Bronx Tale again, this time as a musical. Experience the lasting story of A Bronx Tale (Jan 8-20) as you never have before, with up-beat music written by composer Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast) and lyricist Glenn Slater (School of Rock, Sister Act).

It wouldn’t be A Christmas Carol without the lush costumes that make up the world of Charles Dickens’ classic tale. Costume Designer and DCPA Costume Crafts director Kevin Copenhaver creates each look from sketch to stage, including the production’s sumptuous hats. Every hat on stage has been handcrafted (a trade known in the industry as millinery) by Copenhaver and the DCPA’s Costume Crafts staff. If you look closely, the hats can give you a clue to a character’s social class or station. “Characters of a certain strata will be a bit more polished and blown out in all of their looks, including their hats,” shared Copenhaver. “Someone from a higher class like Scrooge might have a top hat that’s made out of a fabric to simulate crushed fur. Fred’s wife’s bonnet is incredibly decked out, so that tells you something about her. In contrast, the bonnets worn by the Cratchit women are extremely humble.” The condition of a hat also can be a key clue. In the market scenes, sneak a look at the laborers. Their hats are still meticulously constructed, but the costume shop then distresses the newly minted hats to give you an idea of the hardship of their lives.
