Hello and welcome to the DCPA. Whether you are joining us for the hilarious antics in The Play That Goes Wrong or for the legendary Hello, Dolly!, we are delighted you are here. Our Broadway touring shows play a significant role in the success of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Therefore, it is my pleasure to share with you the highlights from our recently released 2017/18 Community Report. Thanks to the generosity of our community which gave nearly $22 million through donations, support of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and gifts to our capital campaign, we were able to provide: • 43 productions • 246 classes • 2,517 ticket vouchers • 36,989 student discounts • 20,588 free and discounted admissions • Rental space valued at more than $30,000 Through these endeavors, we welcomed nearly 30,000 subscribers, distributed more than 850,000 tickets and engaged with more than 144,000 students. Through your patronage and giving, we had a $193.4 million economic impact on our local economy. Broadway does mean big business and next season is no exception. I invite you to review our 2019/20 season announcement on pages 18-19, which includes Escape to Margaritaville, Mean Girls and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical as well as the return engagement of Hamilton. While we are in the throes of one season and planning for another, it is always our great pleasure to consider the future of our industry and there is no better way to see its potential than through our annual Bobby G High School Musical Theatre Awards. Now in its seventh year, this statewide competition is our chance to see Colorado’s up-and-coming talent. We review 45 school productions and, ultimately, nominate schools and students in 15 categories. Students are then honored for their creativity, versatility and talent at an awards ceremony complete with student performances. Two students are awarded Best Actor and Actress in a Musical and go on to represent us at the national Jimmy Awards in New York City. We hope you can join us for this celebration on May 23 in The Ellie. In closing, I am honored and humbled by the generosity of our community, inspired by our artists, proud of our talented youth and enthusiastic about the season to come. If ever there was truth in advertising it’s the hit British comedy The Play That Goes Wrong, says producer Kevin McCollum. “I’ve got to tell you, it’s been a pleasure having a show that I can market and it is exactly what it says it is!” McCollum (Rent, Avenue Q) has teamed up with famed writer/producer J.J. Abrams (Star Wars, Star Trek, Lost) to present this international sensation about a hilariously disastrous production of a murder mystery here in the United States. There are ten actors onstage, but McCollum says the eleventh character is the set. “I think one of the reasons it won the Tony is because it is a set with a personality,” he says. “It actually is the antagonist of the show.” The characters in the play struggle with tiny things at first – a stuck door, a mantlepiece which keeps falling down, pictures and other objects which keep falling off the walls. But as the play goes on, the set malfunctions become more and more sidesplittingly spectacular. UK-based set designer Nigel Hook has worked on several murder mysteries, so his set, which is supposed to be of a collegiate production of an Agatha Christie-type play, features all the clichés of the genre – wood paneling, tacky wallpaper, a fireplace and mantle, pictures and shields on the wall, even a second floor study. But Hook has attended more than his share of theatrical disasters over the years, which he’s

FIDDLER ON COSTUME COLUMN THE ROOF In 1961, writers Joseph Stein (book), Jerry Bock (music), and Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) set out to adapt three stories from Sholem Aleichem’s “Tevye’s Daughters” into a Broadway musical. The result was Fiddler on the Roof (Jun 11-16), which opened on September 22, 1964, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and starring Zero Mostel as Tevye. It won nine 1965 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. The show has enjoyed five other Broadway revivals, several U.S. tours, countless productions around the world, and a successful film. Many of the show’s songs have gone on to become standards, including “To Life (L’Chaim!),” “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “Tradition.” Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher reunited his creative team from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific and The King and I to bring a fresh and authentic vision to this beloved theatrical masterpiece. The new revival also features stunning choreography from acclaimed Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter, based on the original Jerome Robbins staging. A wonderful cast and a lavish orchestra tell this heartwarming story of fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, and the timeless traditions that define faith, family, and community.

also incorporated into his set design. “You just pull references from what you’ve seen and what you wish would happen sometimes,” he says. Hook recalls attending an “incredibly dull Charley’s Aunt,” which was unwittingly improved when, “on the first night literally the furniture started falling apart.” So watch for the same kind of mayhem to ensue in The Play That Goes Wrong when the characters onstage least expect it. There’s quite an art to making things appear to be broken, says Hook. “Basically, you don’t make it so it will break, you make it broken,” he explains. “And you make it very well, so it will go back together again very quickly.” Without trying to give away too many trade secrets, the designer says much of what “goes wrong” involves magnets, hooks, levers and “the forces of gravity.” Part of the fun of the set is that, at times, what happens onstage looks genuinely perilous. “We’re really, really precise with all the slapstick,” says co-author Henry Shields. “We want it to look dangerous, but be absolutely safe for the actors doing it. It’s all about making sure all the precautions are in place and making sure that things are cued at the right time.” To achieve that, the actors rehearsed on the set for the original production, says Hook. “We had a period of time where we could pidge and fiddle with things, and it went up in the rehearsal rooms.” And that has been the protocol for every production since. So “that when we do hand it over to people, you know, we all sleep easily,” says co-author Jonathan Sayer. The set itself gets quite a workout during every show. Hook says after each performance there’s “about half an hour’s work, sort of settling things; putting flaps back up, cleaning…the rug gets very wet, so that has to be put into a position where it can dry out, without causing any problems.” Before each performance, there’s at least another hour of getting the set and props ready to go: “They do lists and they double check and they check themselves and somebody else does a shout round of what has to be where.” When The Play That Goes Wrong opened on Broadway, Hook’s set design was singled out in most of the reviews. Jesse Green, in Vulture, wrote: “Nigel Hook’s booby-trapped set should get either a Tony Award or a cease-and-desist order from OSHA.” And when the Tony Awards were handed out a couple of months later, Hook received the Tony for Best Scenic Design of a Play. “It was just extraordinary,” Hook remembers of attending the ceremony in the 6,000 seat Radio City Music Hall. “I made the foolish mistake of putting my pathetic little speech in my back pocket. I never use a back pocket! And then couldn’t find it once I got up there. So, I winged it. Fortunately, I think everybody thought I was making a big joke! But I was terrified.” A little bit like the seemingly hapless actors who get conked on the head and buffeted about on his brilliant set.

DAVID MERRICK’S FANNY When Fanny opens on Broadway, it marks the debut of producer David Merrick, who is determined to not only conquer Broadway but vanquish all competitors.

CARNIVAL! Merrick hires director / choreographer Gower Champion and librettist Michael Stewart, from the 1960 sleeper-hit Bye Bye Birdie to mount Carnival! which goes on to a 719-performance run. Merrick is so pleased that the morning after the show’s opening, he invites Champion and Stewart to work on a musical version of The Matchmaker.

MILK AND HONEY Milk and Honey opens with music and lyrics from first-time-on-Broadway composer, Jerry Herman. Stewart — already working on The Matchmaker — suggests Herman as composer. He writes four songs “on spec” and the job is his.

INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT Hello, Dolly! makes front page news when the touring company headed by Mary Martin begins a State Department tour of U.S. military bases in Saigon, Tokyo, Korea and London.

THE DIVINE MISS M 22-year-old Bette Midler takes over the role of Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof. The young singer records her breakthrough album “The Divine Miss M” in 1972. She returns to Broadway in 1973 with her concert Bette Midler, for which she receives a special Tony Award.

HELLO, PEARLIE Pearl Bailey, Broadway’s sixth Dolly, takes over the Broadway production with a cast including Cab Calloway as Horace Vandergelder (and a young actor named Morgan Freeman as Rudolph).

SING OUT, ETHEL Ethel Merman takes over the starring role in Hello, Dolly! The show had originally been offered to Merman, who begged off having just finished three years in Gypsy. Composer Herman brushes off two songs he had written when it was expected that Merman would originate the role, and they are inserted into the show.

A LETTER FROM

THE PRESIDENT Hello and welcome to The Murder at Haversham Manor. We are thrilled that the Cornley University Drama Society is performing in the USA. We can only apologise to those involved in the production of Equus originally scheduled for this week, which due to a clerical error, is now being performed in the Cornley University Gymnasium. We hope there are no hard feelings and we’ve left the vaulting horse out for you. The question everyone at Cornley has been asking is: are we ready for a venue of this size? The answer is “yes.” The cast and I rehearsed for weeks using only the best acting teachings to inspire us. We read that Sanford Meisner once said, “Acting is behaving truthfully,” so we immediately changed all the names in the play to our own names and cut the murder, the manor house setting and any other element that we hadn’t personally experienced. We then found the piece rather flat, and it only ran at 17 minutes. So we went back to the Meisner book and we realized the full quote was in fact: “Acting is behaving truthfully... under imaginary circumstances,” so we reinstated the cuts and we were then quickly back on track. We found the teachings of Michael Chekhov less confusing. He says, “An actor has to burn inside with an outer ease.” So that evening it was vindaloos all round at the Sunam Balti House on Cornley High Street. However, try as we did to not react to our burning insides, it was certainly noticeable that we were all in significant discomfort, which just goes to show how tough acting can be. At the end of the evening, Dennis was actually sick in the restaurant bathrooms. We always knew he was one of the weaker actors. All this hard work and preparation has left us with an ensemble piece that has achieved such critical acclaim as “VERY INTERESTING” from Mr. Harwood, esteemed head of Design Technology at Cornley University, and “RATHER UNSETTLING” from real-life police chief Mr. Greaves of the Cornley Volunteer Police Force. I’m sure that with a full audience, the piece will truly bring down the house.

Touring debut! Chris is the newly elected head of the Drama Society. For tonight’s show, he served as the voice coach, dialect coach, fight choreographer, casting director and costume designer. He also plays the lead role and, of course, directed. The Society would like to thank Chris for his remarkable passion and efforts. Touring debut! A member of the Cornley Drama Society for three years, Robert uses the Stanislavsky method. Credits include Lame Horse in Black Beauty , Victorian Policeman in Madame Tussauds Chamber of Horror – Live! , Dopey in Snow White and The Tall Broad Gentlemen and Augustus Gloop in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory . Robert’s next performance will be as Godot in a newly selfwritten sequel to Beckett’s classic.

JONATHAN HARRIS CHARLES HAVERSHAM

Touring debut! Jonathan works as a model and is therefore excited to learn transferrable skills by appearing in The Murder at Haversham Manor . He is no stranger to acting and appeared in Casualty when he was just 5 years old. Jonathan also performed with Emote, another local theater company, in A Midsummer Night’s Stamina, which featured a cast of 14 pedalling exercise bikes for the full two-hour performance.

SANDRA WILKINSON FLORENCE COLLEYMOORE

Touring debut! This is Sandra’s 11th season with the Cornley University Drama Society, during which she has proudly performed roles such as Snow White in Snow White and The Tall Broad Gentlemen, Virginia Woolf in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Cow in Jack and the Bean. Sandra has been performing from a very young age, since her mother appeared in A Winter’s Tale pregnant. 4

Touring debut! Max is in his first year at Cornley University where he is studying human geography and crime. He is an avid fan of films, and his favourite is The Legend of Bagger Vance, which he’s seen 27 times. This is Max’s first production with the Drama Society, and he is very glad to have donated a large portion of his recent inheritance to help the show reach Broadway.

DENNIS TYDE PERKINS

Touring debut! After failing the tryouts for the football, cricket, volleyball and basketball teams, Dennis decided to join the Drama Society. Dennis does not live in the Cornley halls of residence and commutes in daily from his parents’ house. He hopes the Society will give him the chance to meet like-minded people. Touring debut! The unsung hero of the Society, Annie has designed, built, painted, stage managed and costumed every single Society show in the last three years. Her hard work and dogged determination behind-the-scenes lies behind so much of the Society’s success. After The Murder at Haversham Manor, Annie will begin an internship at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Touring debut! Trevor is only participating in The Murder at Haversham Manor to earn much needed extra credit for his electronics module in order to pass his engineering course at Cornley University. Once he has passed the course, he will not continue to work with the Drama Society. Trevor credits his success to his sunny disposition and his positive outlook on life.

In 1995, Mr. McCollum co-founded the Producing Office, and has since created Alchemation, a theatrical and media producing company committed to new work. Mr. McCollum was trained at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and earned his master’s degree in film producing from the Peter Stark Program at the University of Southern California. In 1995, he received the Robert Whitehead Award for Outstanding Commercial Theatre Producing. J.J. ABRAMS (Producer) has no idea what he’s doing here. A fan of theater since he was a child, he claims to be thrilled to make his first foray onto Broadway with The Play That Goes Wrong. Abrams, founder of Bad Robot Productions, is a writer, director and/ or producer of such television series as “Felicity,” “Alias,” “Lost,” “Fringe,” “Person of Interest” and “Westworld” and such films as Mission Impossible: III, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible— Ghost Protocol, Super 8, Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission Impossible—Rogue Nation, 10 Cloverfield Lane and Star Trek Beyond. In 2013, Abrams collaborated with Doug Dorst on the novel S, which became a New York Times Best Seller. Abrams most recently directed and produced Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which he also co-wrote with Lawrence Kasdan. He and his wife, Katie McGrath, live in Los Angeles with their three children. KENNY WAX (Producer) is a triple Olivier Award-winning London-based producer, currently serving a three-year term as the President of the Society of London Theatre. His musical Top Hat won three Olivier Awards including Best New Musical from its seven nominations. His production of Once on This Island won Best New Musical in 1995 from its four nominations and The Play That Goes Wrong won Best New Comedy at the Olivier Awards in 2015 and is still playing in the West End, on a UK tour and has just been extended on Broadway, where it won a Tony Award for best set design. Kenny has just opened a new musical, Six, about Henry VIII’s wives, transferring from the Edinburgh Festival into the West End. Later this year he will present the first staged production of The Worst Witch, based on the books by Jill Murphy. In the U.S. in 2018/19 Kenny will present Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Around the World in 80 Days and Mr Popper’s Penguins.

EDUCATING FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH INNOVATIVE ENERGY CURRICULUM

For the past three years, Noble Energy and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) have partnered on an innovative curriculum that supports Colorado State Standards for more than 2,333 students in 45 schools across the state. As a new component to its popular Dramatic Learning Program™, DCPA teachers work hand in hand with Noble Energy employees to bring the subject of energy to life for students. The program is presented to fifth grade students as part of their earth science curriculum and uses dramatic learning techniques to help them understand the geology and technology behind oil and gas development and production. The students get out of their seats and act as rocks, plants and animals, allowing themselves to become immersed in the material and internalize the lesson. They even dance, mimicking the flow of water. “We learned about weathering, erosion, earth sciences, tectonic plates and resources. The acting reinforced our learning and helped put visuals to the learning,” said a teacher from Bel Mar Elementary regarding her school’s participation in the DCPA Dramatic Learning Program™ with Noble. Noble Energy has more than 700 employees who live and work in Colorado, so the company feels very strongly about educating future generations and providing learning opportunities for all children. Isaiah Flores, a lease operator for Noble Energy and regular classroom volunteer with DCPA teachers, says the program is a great way to give back to the community. “We’re proud of our partnership with the DCPA because it encourages innovative ways of learning and makes learning about earth science fun,” he said. Noble Energy’s support for Colorado’s public schools is a fundamental part of the company’s commitment to Colorado and the company intends to grow the partnership with the DCPA, reaching more students across the state. This year Noble was honored as the National Philanthropy Day’s Outstanding Large Business for its contribution and involvement in the philanthropic process. With energy playing such a vital role in Colorado’s past, present and future, it is critical that the workforce of tomorrow have a strong understanding of the underlying technology that powers our energy economy.
