Hello and welcome to the DCPA! Since our last issue of Applause went to press in early December, we’ve had some exciting results to share. First, our Off-Center production of Camp Christmas at the Stanley Marketplace was enjoyed by nearly 70,000 individuals. Designed by local artist Lonnie Hanzon, this immersive exploration of Christmas throughout the centuries took families from Rome to Disco…complete with 1,000 Santas! It was a treat. Also, we recently released our FY19 Community Report. I’m delighted to share that our plays, musicals, events and classes were enjoyed by nearly 942,000 individuals — 70,000 of whom attended with free or discounted admission. In total, our economic impact from the last season was nearly $175 million. Thanks to our team members, Trustees, community partners and all of you for making last year a success. As we’re in the throes of FY20, we’re also looking forward to our next season. In this issue you will see ads announcing the upcoming seasons of both our Broadway and Theatre Company divisions. We’re looking forward to inviting both of our subscriber bases to the national tour of To Kill a Mockingbird, Aaron Sorkin’s new play, directed by Bartlett Sher and starring Richard Thomas, and based on Harper Lee’s classic novel. Plus our Theatre Company will present its first commissioned musical with the world premiere of Rattlesnake Kate based on one of Colorado’s little-known heroines, Kate Slaughterback. Kate protected her son, her horse and her homestead from a rattlesnake migration by killing 140 snakes with her trusty shotgun and, ironically, a “No Hunting” sign. Among a large lineup of returning favorites, several new Broadway tours are on tap including Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film comes to life on stage and has been met with wide acclaim. Applause goes to press before the 2020 Tony Award nominations are announced, so be sure to tune in June 7 to see if Moulin Rouge! The Musical and the other shows featured are recognized. Until then, we have a treasure trove of outstanding plays to engage and inspire you, including the cartoon-come-to-life version of The SpongeBob Musical, the “frenemies” comedy written by Tina Fey, Mean Girls, and Dael Olandersmith’s one-woman show, Until the Flood, that explores Ferguson’s reaction to a town in crisis. Thank you for joining us and making last season memorable, this season spectacular and tomorrow something to anticipate!

SPONGEBOB ANYTHING BUT SQUARE

The Company of The SpongeBob Musical. Photo by Jeremy Daniel

APPLAUSE • MAR – MAY 2020

“S

“SpongeBob SquarePants,” one of the most successful animated series in TV history, was more than your average kids’ cartoon — it held generational appeal. One of the many reasons The SpongeBob Musical continues to broaden its appeal on Broadway is its unprecedented rock score, which is made up of original songs by some of the most popular artists in music history. The roster includes Cyndi Lauper, Aerosmith, The Flaming Lips, Sara Bareilles, Lady Antebellum, John Legend, Panic! at the Disco, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and the late legend David Bowie — acts that have combined to sell more than 400 million records. If that were the lineup for some hipster concert festival, let’s just say it would certainly be a Bikini Bottom Day for South By Southwest or Coachella. But theatre? … Theatre? Broadway musicals just aren’t put together this way. And yet Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune opined that The SpongeBob Musical’s big gamble “works quite beautifully.” All of the musicians got a brief on where their song would fit in the story, so they weren’t writing random SpongeBob songs. They were then unified by orchestrator Tom Kitt, whose Broadway credits range from Next to Normal to Green Day’s American Idiot. His driving principal was that “first and foremost, you have to retain the identity of the artists,” he said. “It has to be recognizable as their work.” When word got out that counterculture icon Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips was on board, Kitt said, “It seems like every artist we reached out to wanted to be a part of this.” All of the songs are original except for the opening “Bikini Bottom Day,” which comes from the TV show, and a modified version of “No Control,” released by Bowie in 1996. The storyline for The SpongeBob Musical stands alone, so audiences need no previous knowledge of the animated series or its characters to follow along. A volcanic apocalypse has come to Bikini Bottom, the title character’s home under the sea, and SpongeBob and his pals (a starfish and a squirrel) must save the day. One of the central characters is Mr. Krabs, played by Denver native Zach Kononov, a graduate of Cherry Creek High School and former singer with the Colorado Children’s Chorale. Krabs is SpongeBob’s employer, a crabby Krab who sees the impending disaster as a money-making opportunity. “In a normal musical, you have one book writer and one composer and one lyricist, so all the music is very similar,” Kononov said. “What’s amazing here is that you’re getting all of these different styles, and Tom Kitt has unified them so that they all fit perfectly within the world of the show. There’s something in it for everyone.” Kononov says everyone should see The SpongeBob Musical “because it’s a show about community and acceptance and love and welcoming in the outsider, which is a message everyone should hear. There is so much cynicism and doom and gloom in the world, and this musical is a balm for all of that. It scatters joy and celebration and endless optimism. Our director, Tina Landau, describes it as a rock concert, a party and a carnival.”

COMING UP FROM BROADWAY

We asked Kononov to introduce the score to readers by highlighting six songs:

“No Control”

DISNEY’S THE LION KING

By David Bowie and Brian Eno “This is a super-cool song that sets up what’s happening in the show. It exemplifies and personifies the chaos that’s going on in Bikini Bottom. This is right after we find out that Mount Humongous is erupting, we have no control — and everything is kind of falling apart.”

The Lion King has been roaring on Broadway since 1997, making it the third longest-running musical ever. From May 13 – June 14 the awardwinning show will return to The Buell Theatre, where it originally launched its first national tour in 2002. Here are some fun facts that you may have never heard about this award-winning production.

“Just a Simple Sponge”

Written by Panic! at the Disco “Brandon Urie of Panic! at the Disco has created what I call SpongeBob’s ‘I Want’ song. Mr. Krabs belittles SpongeBob by saying, ‘You’re just a fry cook!’ but SpongeBob wants to be so much more. This song is super-high, it sounds just like a Panic! at the Disco song, and it’s one of my favorites in the whole show.”

“Tomorrow Is”

Written by Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips “This is a driving rock song about taking in the moment and knowing that we only have tomorrow. It’s about living in the moment.”

FUN FACTS:

“Poor Pirates”

Written by Sara Bareilles, Tony Award nominee for writing Waitress “This song is so very different from Waitress. We have a character named Patchy who is SpongeBob’s No. 1 fan, and he’s trying to meet SpongeBob all through the show. At the start of Act 2, he and his band of pirates come on stage and sing this very silly song about being pirates.”

• There are more than 200 puppets in the show, including rod puppets, shadow puppets and full-sized puppets. • At 13’ long and 12’ high, the elephant is the longest and largest animal in The Lion King. It takes four performers to walk the elephant puppet down the aisle.

“I Guess I Miss You”

Written by John Legend “This is a really beautiful song about the friendship between SpongeBob and Patrick, a pink starfish who wears flowered swim trunks and often unknowingly encourages activities that get the two into trouble. There’s a portion of the show where they get into a fight and they’re separated from each other, and in this song they express their love for each other in a very John Legend-y kind of a way. Which is to say it’s very sincere.” To read our expanded interview with Zach Kononov about returning to Denver with The SpongeBob Musical, visit denvercenter.org/news-center

“What’s amazing here is that you’re getting all of these different styles, and [orchestrator] Tom Kitt has unified them so that they all fit perfectly within the world of the show. There’s something in it for everyone.” — ZACH KONONOV, ACTOR

THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL MAR 10 – 22 • BUELL THEATRE ASL Interpreted, Audio Described, Open Captioned performance: Mar 22, 2pm

• Actors portraying lions wear lightweight masks, as light as four ounces, made from a silicone mold with a carbon fiber overlay. • The show travels with 17 trucks to transport the production’s puppets, set pieces, and other materials from city to city. Fourteen of the trucks are 53’ semi-trailers. • The show has been performed around the world in nine different languages. • There are four African dialects spoken in the show: Swahili, Zulu, Ghosa, and Soweto. • The Lion King won six Tony Awards® in 1998, including Best Musical.

Written by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith “This is a perfect song for Aerosmith to contribute to the score because in the story, it’s sung by a rock group called The Electric Skates, who ride into town on their skateboards and just blow the roof off Bikini Bottom. The song is about rocking out as hard as you can, which lends itself perfectly to Aerosmith.”

“The DCPA continues to bring entertaining and timeless programming to the Denver community, impacting the vibrancy and continued growth of our city.”

At PNC Bank, community investment is foundational to our values and interwoven into our corporate culture. We know we are only as successful as those whom we serve, which is why we seek to strengthen the communities where we live and work by providing resources that help enhance early childhood education and support economic development. One of the areas we focus on is the arts. We have a legacy of supporting arts and culture communities across our footprint, as we understand the critical role they play in the continued success, stability and growth of our local communities. Not to mention in attracting and retaining a vibrant, talented workforce. Although we may be new to Denver, we’ve already started to implement this legacy through sponsorships with some of Denver’s most prestigious arts organizations, including the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado Ballet, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and of course, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). “The DCPA continues to bring entertaining and timeless programming to the Denver community, impacting the vibrancy and continued growth of our city,” said Ryan Beiser, PNC regional president and head of Corporate Banking for Colorado. “As champions of both the arts and early childhood education, we are especially delighted to provide live performances of Goodnight Moon to the children of Denver through sponsoring the DCPA’s Theatre for Young Audiences program.”

BY JOHN MOORE

F

For millions of us, high school was no laughing matter. More like downright painful. Until there was Tina. Celebrated comedy writer Tina Fey found fetch in your teenage PTSD when she wrote the catchphrase-rich screenplay for Mean Girls, which rocketed from teen cult fave to bona-fide box-office pink in 2004, grossing more than $128 million. Fey’s take on the well-worn subject of cliques who rule the school was different from its many pop-culture predecessors, her husband says, “because she’s funny — and she’s funny in a way that holds up.” Fey adapted Mean Girls into a stage musical that has played for two years on Broadway and now comes to Denver as a touring production that has found widespread audience appeal because unlike, say, Stephen King’s Carrie, the nasty kids don’t end up fried in the high-school gym. They are redeemed. That’s because Mean Girls is about more than just the mean girls. “Oh, there are many mean people in high school,” said Jeff Richmond, an Emmy-winning composer who married Fey in 2001 and wrote the music for the Mean Girls musical. “But there are also very sweet people, and very broken people, and very hurt people, too. And with this musical, we are trying to give all of them a voice and a sense of self-importance.” The irony of the musical’s title, Richmond said, “is that the show is so joyful and so much fun. The title does hang on that one word — Mean — but there’s so much more to it than that.”

24

Fey based her film on the self-help book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. The story follows a homeschooled girl who joins a girl group called The Plastics, only to learn first-hand the price of sacrificing your true self for a spot at the top of the popularity food chain. Fey’s script produced one classic line after another, some that theatregoers now shout out during live performances. (“Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen!”) Successfully adapting that proven source material to the stage largely depended on how the music of Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin would enhance the show’s overall message of acceptance. Their versatile score produced multiple anthems, among them “I’d Rather Be Me (Than Be With You)” and “Where Do You Belong?” Richmond cites “I See Stars” as a song that strikes to the heart of Mean Girls. “That’s a song that says everybody is a star, in their own right, no matter what group you are in,” he said. “The song contains an important line that says: ‘I see you there. I see you.’ People in high school — or really anyone at any time in their lives — might feel like they disappear amongst all the noise and glitz of the world. Just being seen is important.” When Richmond was in high school in Ohio, he was not an athlete. But he was funny, and he navigated adolescent tribulations using comedy as a defense. He found his way into choir and singing groups and marching band, all of which pointed him in the direction of a musical career

CHOIR BOY

From the writer behind the 2016 Oscar Award winner for Best Picture (Moonlight), Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Choir Boy (Space Theatre, April 10 – May 10) is a stunning comingof-age drama that was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Play. The show follows an African American teen named Pharus as he comes to terms with his sexuality and attempts to find his place at an all-boys prep school. As Pharus takes on a leadership position in the school’s gospel choir, the play features moving music that will leave audiences wanting more.

• The show contains several gospel

songs sung by the cast, some of which were written specifically for the play by Jason Michael Webb (Musical Director for The Color Purple) and Fitz Patton (Sound Designer for An Act of God).

“There is just a very universal feeling about the whole thing,” he said. “Everyone knows how it feels to be bullied, and that transcends high school. Bullying certainly has gotten into our day-to-day culture, especially in the past 10 years. But Mean Girls asks, ‘If you’re bullying somebody, why are you doing that? Are you hurt also?’ ” And Fey is asked by young people all the time for her advice on making it through high school. “Tina will remind any kid that, yes, four years feels like eternity, but it’s really not,” Richmond said. “You will come out the other side ready to face life, and all those problems you had before will be behind you. “There’s a line in the opening number where Damien says, ‘And no one died.’ For a while, we had that as the last line in the show. Because the whole idea is that you’re going to get through this. I actually liked high school very much, and I have to say: Life just keeps getting better as you get past all that. And you do get past it.”

that has run through “Saturday Night Live,” where he spent five seasons composing original songs for stars such as Jack Black, Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones; “30 Rock,” with his wife; and now “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” where he is presently working on an interactive special set to debut later this year on Netflix. If they had prepped together, Richmond said, he and Fey might have been high-school sweethearts. “Actually, no, that would have been terrible,” he self-corrected with a laugh. “We would have broken up by junior year for sure.” It’s probably no coincidence that the motto of Fey’s Pennsylvania high school was, “Where Every One Is Royalty.” Like Richmond, Fey found the funny people at her Upper Darby High School. “She played tennis, but she wasn’t really an athlete, Richmond said. “She did drama, but she also loved being on the stage crew, and she loved any opportunity for writing. I think she found her way through high school with her caustic wit.” Richmond and Fey met at Chicago’s famed Second City, and now have two children. When Fey left “SNL” to develop “30 Rock” in 2006, Richmond composed the theme song, appeared as the character “Alphonso Disperioso” and directed five episodes. Now a sweet 16 years since the Mean Girls film, Richmond isn’t surprised that the story is still speaking not only to a new generation of girls but to their parents and grandparents as well.

“We knew that working on Until the Flood would take us into difficult historical, cultural and emotional places and I think we both felt we could support each other with that investigation and self-reflection.” — NEEL KELLER, DIRECTOR

32

O

Our two major political parties, once frenemies, appear locked down in irremediable differences. Disputation has poisoned our daily life, coarsening relationships and affecting too many aspects of daily existence. Anger, incivility, prevarication and racism have plunged us into social paralysis. To say nothing of shootings. Too many shootings have been of black men by white cops, often in situations where the how and why is hard to ascertain. So when on August 9, 2014, Darren Wilson, a white police officer, shot Michael Brown, an 18-year-old unarmed black man in Ferguson, Missouri under murky circumstances, people took sides. And when the St. Louis County prosecutor and the US Department of Justice cleared Wilson of wrongdoing, all hell broke loose. Whom to believe…? But when the phone call came from the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis to Dael Orlandersmith — a black poet, playwright and performer — offering to commission a theatre piece from her about this event, she said yes, adding peremptorily that director Neel Keller would be “doing it with me.” That was the start of Until the Flood. Orlandersmith and Keller have worked together on and off for 25 years, ever since he invited her to play The Nurse in a production of Romeo and Juliet at Massachusetts’ Williamstown Theatre Festival. Six years ago, they joined forces to develop Forever, a one-woman “semi-autobiographical exploration of the family we’re born into and the family we choose.” Staged by Keller and commissioned by Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group (CTG), where Keller is an Associate Artistic Director, it cemented the relationship. He said that piece, written and performed by Orlandersmith, “was a very special experience.” When it came to tackling the Michael Brown incident, Orlandersmith’s intuitive response was to distill the reaction of people she interviewed around Ferguson and put their words in the mouths of eight composite individuals of her own creation — young, old, man, woman, black, white, liberal and not. Her characters are a fascinating lot, of varied persuasions and occupations. Retired black schoolteacher Louisa’s confusion over Brown’s death sets the stage for others’ emotions to follow. Rusty, a retired white policeman, echoes

some of Louisa’s conflicted feelings when he states that, in his painful confrontations with black people as a cop, it was like… “they wanted to die.” Orlandersmith’s younger creations express a different kind of fatalism: Not wanting to die, but wanting to get out alive, free of the condemnations determined by the color of their skin. High-schooler Hassan, eager to find his own “right” way, wishes that his married-with-children and beloved history teacher were his Dad. “I’m thinking of the kids that have parents,” he tells us, “both parents. Married and carin’ about them…. I’m 17, man. Sometimes I feel seven, sometimes I feel 70…. I want out.” Paul, also 17 and black, lives in the same public housing where Michael Brown lived. “Looks just like a prison,” he tells us. “Please God, let me get out. Just let me get out…” In contrast, Connie, a white schoolteacher who grieves for both Wilson and Brown, is mortified when her good friend and colleague Margaret — a black teacher, with whom she shared a solid friendship, wine and confidences — is so infuriated that she severs the relationship. Reuben, a black barber who deals daily in “appearances” is equally wary of so-called liberals for similar reasons. He owns his shop, likes his life and has seen it all. He gets his chance to explain himself to two college students — one white, one black — who invade his shop on a crusade to “save him.” Reuben delivers a memorable lesson in social boundaries to those girls that they may never forget. Nor does Orlandersmith hesitate to take on Dougray, a selfacknowledged product of “white trash,” smart enough to leave that life behind him and make his own way, even if he hasn’t quite found the compassion to not exploit the less fortunate. He may have escaped a drunken and abusive father, but he’s not yet a better man. If Orlandersmith was not eager to say much about how she and Keller put the show together, Keller was. “Dael trusted my artistic impulses and way of collaborating,” he said. “We knew that working on Until the Flood would take us into difficult historical, cultural and emotional places and I think we both felt we could support each other with that investigation and self-reflection.” The play takes flight confirming all we see and hear, with increasingly poetic utterance. When asked where the title came from, Orlandersmith elliptically responded: “St. Louis is near the Mississippi River…. It’s a Catholic city; water as redemption, as purity, cleanliness….” And like her play, Noah’s Ark also allegedly had just eight human beings on board. Until the Flood only confirms this poet-playwright as an exemplar of locating that fragile kernel of anguish and truth inside each one of us we like to call a soul. Even less expected is the breadth of her reach. Until the Flood benefits from her philosopher’s mind and an even-handed fairness that dominates her rich diversity of points of view. Contrary to expectations from someone so precise, she’s not territorial. She’s prepared to give any serious company the right to use eight different people to play the eight characters she’s created or fly solo with it, as she does. Whether others can begin to match her skill at inhabiting each character as distinctly as she does remains an open question. When the educated Louisa expresses indignation at the disdainful smirk a less fortunate young black girl sends her way, her father cautions her, “Sometimes, you can know so much and know so little…” It’s what this Flood is all about, upending preconceptions and offering a tough, uplifting as well as humbling moment for us all. LARIMER SQUARE: WHERE DENVER SHINES

L Larimer Square has found the perfect partner in the DCPA. The combination of world-class theater, music, nightlife, dining and shopping, located just two blocks from one another, provides an amazing and immersive cultural experience.

Larimer Square, downtown Denver’s most beautiful block and beloved shopping district, has a strong commitment to the arts. So it’s no surprise that block owner and award-winning place-maker and entrepreneur, Jeff Hermanson, has made a long-term commitment to partner with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). Home to more than 20 independently owned boutiques and beauty/wellness service providers, as well as a collection of Denver’s top, chef-owned restaurants, Larimer Square is where the city of Denver truly shines. The historic block’s signature canopy of lights, historic architecture, charming storefronts and beautiful views of the Rocky Mountains combine to make Larimer Square one of the most treasured places in Colorado. Larimer Square provides a unique experience that compliments the DCPA’s unmatched cultural offerings. “The combination of Larimer Square’s world-class dining and unrivaled shopping is a perfect match for the theater, music, and immersive performances offered through the DCPA,” said Hermanson, who’s owned and overseen development of Larimer Square for the last 25 years. “Located just two blocks from one another, culture-loving residents and visitors know that the two destinations provide an amazing, only-in-Denver experience.” The block hosts some of the top festivals and events each year including the annual Denver Chalk Art Festival, a free, two-day street-painting festival where hundreds of artists from around the world spend hours turning the streets of Larimer Square into a walkable gallery exhibit of chalk art over the first weekend in June. Larimer Square also hosts signature Dining Al Fresco evening events under the lights on select summer dates and will once again host the international food festival, Slow Food Nations, in September.
