The seasonality of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts often resembles that of the school year. From late summer to spring, we are in the throes of our theatre season, packing nearly 40 shows into nine months. Then, we ease back, take a breath and anticipate the plays to come with a few shows sprinkled in. The irony of this comparison is that it is true for nearly every department…except Education. Between May and June — the span of this issue of Applause — DCPA Education will be working at full steam. Consider this: • DPS Shakespeare Festival just wrapped up on April 26 and our Education team provided 125 workshops to prepare the 5,000 students for the event. • The DCPA’s seventh annual Bobby G High School Musical Theatre Awards and Competition on May 23 includes education workshops and in-school adjudication for 45 high schools across the state. • Shakespeare in the Parking Lot is traveling to schools and community centers throughout the metro area all spring. Featuring an abridged version of Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, our troupe is entertaining high school students and facilitating in-class workshops. • Building upon the tremendous success of our Theatre for Young Audiences program, DCPA Education has announced the fall production of Goodnight Moon, which will welcome 42,000 children ages PreK-2nd grade. • Classes, classes and more classes! Just as our spring acting session for child, teen and adults winds down, our summer camps and classes ramp up. More than 1,500 students will fill our halls all summer. If you’ve never participated in our Education programs, join us for an acting class! You can swing on a trapeze, learn stage combat, attend the Bobby G Awards or stop by and catch a bit of the Bard. It’s fun for everyone! Warm regards,

Janice P.S. While our Theatre Company shows go on hiatus during the summer, be sure to revisit us for The Last Defender, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Anastasia, Mixed Taste and It’s Not You, It’s Me – The Second City.

The snow and bracing weather were no match for the electrifying atmosphere at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ 39th annual Saturday Night Alive on March 2. Touted as the final act before The Stage Theatre closed for renovation, DCPA Education’s Teen Company demonstrated the importance of arts education when they performed a medley as the opening act for the ever-talented Vanessa Williams. Guests enjoyed the perennial Surprise Box Sale, luxury Silent Auction — including a coveted walk-on role to our engagement of Wicked, dinner by Epicurean, desserts and dancing. Additionally, the event featured a new element — the presentation of the Daniel L. Ritchie Spotlight Award to its namesake in recognition of his work to advance the mission of the DCPA.

B Y S Y LV I E D R A K E

F

Fiddler On the Roof. You’ve heard of it, yes? Unless you’re Rip Van Winkle and a long time asleep, how could you not? Based on some of Sholem Aleichem’s short stories, Fiddler is among the most beloved and widely disseminated of American musicals. True, we’ve had Hamilton, The Book of Mormon and Spamalot since. One is a take on American history, the second a spoof of missionary misadventures, the third about a kibitzing bunch of galloping knights. But Fiddler…? About impoverished Jews in Russia at the start of the 20th century? Why? You might well ask. Its own creators had doubts. They wanted to make a musical about Anatevka, a dirt-poor Russian shtetl (village) home to mostly destitute Jews, by focusing on the hardscrabble life of its milkman, Tevye, his wife Golde, their five daughters, his lame horse, chickens, cows and geese. These people were viewed with scorn by the host country, Russia, that eventually offered them a Sophie’s choice: pogrom (massacre) or exile. Guess what they chose? It took three American descendants of these exiled Jews — composer Jerry Bock, lyricist Sheldon Harnick and bookwriter Joseph Stein — to consider enshrining all that misery in a show. Bock and Harnick had collaborated on the 1959 Tony Award-winning musical Fiorello! about New York City’s popular Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, and were looking for another project. They knew the Aleichem stories

16

were a tough subject, but the stories were close to their hearts. Their parents came from Russia and from just such circumstances. Since they had worked with Joseph Stein on the musical Tenderloin and knew his own background matched theirs, they decided to ask him to join them. He did. Even knowing the odds of finding success in this venture were low, they persisted. But translating tales of poverty, separation and exile into song and dance took effort and, well, patience, more of it than they’d anticipated. Trial and error made them realize they needed help — more players in the game, preferably some with skin in this history. They decided to approach the eminent producer/director Harold Prince, but Prince, who was German-Jewish (as opposed to Russian) did not wholly embrace the project. He urged the creators to go after director/choreographer Jerome Robbins. Robbins, born Rabinowitz (a derivation of Aleichem’s own birth surname), was very busy, but also interested. After months of delays — as outlined in Barbara Isenberg’s meticulous book Tradition! on the making of this musical — Robbins came on board in 1963. Taking a deep dive, he turned into an indispensable ringmaster and was just the man to try to whip this project into shape. “Whip” is the word. Robbins was a known martinet. He had a rigorous, often tyrannical work ethic that was admired, but also dreaded as much as it was revered. He did not suffer fools, and he also did not always know what

COMING UP FROM BROADWAY

he was looking for, but he could always spot it when he found it. This made for plenty more trial and error. A contentious issue arose with the casting of Zero Mostel as Tevye. Robbins had named names during the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings, something Mostel could not forgive. But the two men respected one another as artists and learned to tolerate each other for the sake of the work. The wayward Mostel, however, was not above taunting Robbins by throwing a lot of improvisational clowning into the gears. If Robbins was the ringmaster, Prince, who by now had joined the company as producer, became the referee — a buffer during a long and trying rehearsal period. He started by asking the three originators of the idea what they thought this musical should be and then turned the question on its head. He badgered them into finding the right flavor, hitting the right notes, engaging in the contradictions of pride, forbearance, anger, optimism, regret and hope. Those characteristics are baked into the Jewish DNA, along with the determination to overcome and survive. Ritual is the Jewish anchor. Also tradition; now there’s a title for a song…

Early in the morning of July 17, 1918, Czar Nicholas of Russia and his family were killed by members of a Bolshevik revolutionary group. However, rumors persisted for years afterward that the Czar’s youngest daughter, Anastasia, had survived the attack. The legend of the lost Grand Duchess was likewise bolstered by the 1991 announcement that nine bodies of Romanov family members and servants had been found in an unmarked grave, but that the bodies of one of the daughters and the younger brother Alexei remained unaccounted for. Over the years, several imposters came forward and claimed to be Anastasia. The most notable of these was Anna Anderson; she bore a striking resemblance to the girl and even knew many personal details of her life. DNA test results later denounced Anderson’s claim and ultimately concluded that bone fragments in a separate grave were the two missing members of the Romanov family. Yet, as director Darko Tresnjak said, “A fabrication gave birth to a myth, a modern romance” that has inspired many books, films, and now a Broadway musical. Anastasia plays The Buell Theatre August 7 – 18.

Placing Tevye’s story in a broader context answered the deeper questions: What makes us strong? What is courage? What are morality and love?

The longer Stein, Bock and Harnick worked with Robbins, the clearer it became that what they had thought of as a small parochial tale was much more universal. Placing Tevye’s story in that broader frame answered the deeper questions: What makes us strong? What is courage? What are morality and love? Invigorated, they kept writing and composing, also injecting a good deal of found humor, while Robbins kept rejecting and refining. This went on until they nailed what they were all looking for in a process that, in the end, honored and rewarded everyone. The modest idea born in the late 1950s became a powerful reality on September 22, 1964, when Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway. You know the rest. The statistics are overwhelming, with a huge international success, a movie, five Broadway revivals, productions in almost any country or language you can mention, including a stirring new one in Yiddish (amazingly, a first) making fresh waves in New York. This 55-year survival is no accident, with a score derivative of its ancient musical roots, inspired lyrics and a book that respects and elevates its origins. Bock is quoted in Isenberg’s book saying that, while they wrote Fiddler as they would any other show, “those embers…kept burning underneath.” As for the title and that melancholy figure on the roof, an image taken from Marc Chagall’s painting, it was, Chagall said, that of a drunken uncle and mediocre fiddle player who clambered on the roof when he was in his cups to play his violin. Chagall allowed its use on one condition: the music had to reflect his uncle’s off-key playing. Da-da-da-da-de-de-de-de-de-de-dum…

O

One hundred and nineteen years ago this year, author L. Frank Baum, wrote a charming book called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that became a children’s classic. The book was turned into a stage musical a year later and begat another great classic: the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Judy Garland played a girl who, after a close encounter of the tornado kind, found herself in a strange and mysterious land. Dorothy was her name and all she really wanted was to get back home to Kansas. The film’s iconic characters and images have become so deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness that psychologists use the movie as an archetype of the hero’s journey. Like Dorothy, all we want, it would seem, is to find our way back home. The next Oz-ian incarnation came along in 1975 when a sleek version of the story called The Wiz, featuring an all-black cast, opened on Broadway. It ran for 1,672 performances and was later made into a movie. Then, in 1995, strident political satirist and author Gregory Maguire wrote a gargantuan and immensely popular fantasy novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. In an ironic twist — everything in Oz seems to have an ironic twist — the book examines, among other things, the nature of good and the nature of evil. Maguire found them alarmingly and inextricably entwined. Then the adventures in Oz morphed once again, this time into a stage production adapted from Maguire’s book. Its latest life form is that of the Tony Award-winning musical by composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin) and librettist Winnie Holzman (“My So Called Life,” “thirtysomething”). Wicked tells a tale that is about as far removed from Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz as the Emerald City is from Wichita. The show’s dark, witty, sophisticated charm made it the hottest ticket on Broadway. Glinda the good witch is still there, but what, the musical inquires, is goodness after all? The main action revolves around Elphaba, the so-called Wicked Witch (named by Maguire as a derivation of L. Frank Baum’s initials). Elphaba proves the popular adage that, indeed, it’s not easy being green. Born a lovely shade of jade, she is misunderstood, shunned and persecuted. While this naturally takes its toll, the question remains: is she evil? The answer is as ambiguous as her name. Elphaba and Glinda’s unlikely friendship illustrates the fact that it’s not simple trying to figure out which witch is which. “The idea behind Wicked is that things are not as they seem,” notes Holzman. “What you think you know, you don’t really know. It is the premise of the novel that you know certain things, but you don’t know the deeper story.” The same notion drew composer Stephen Schwartz to the project: “I’m often attracted to an idea that takes a familiar story and spins it, looking at it from another direction, like Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. I like it when I see things like that, and I like to write them. For me, if you take a familiar story — whether it be the Book

of Genesis or The Wizard of Oz — and you come at it from another point of view, the tension between the audience’s preconception and the approach you’re taking to the story adds an extra level of response, plus it helps to clarify the points you’re trying to make. “The idea of taking what is one of the iconic villains of American culture, the Wicked Witch of the West — so much ‘the villain’ that we don’t even know her name — and looking at it from her point of view, that seemed to me a brilliant concept. It was clear that a show about her could explore some of my favorite themes: the difference between surface appearances and what’s really going on underneath, how life is more complex and has more ambiguity than we tend to be comfortable with and, certainly, than our public discourse admits to.” Schwartz also found the whole idea inherently musical.

“The idea of taking what is one of the iconic villains of American culture, the Wicked Witch of the West… and looking at it from her point of view, that seemed to me a brilliant concept.”

2. Dahl wrote another book which inspired a musical that toured Denver. What was the name of that book? • James and the Giant Peach • The Gremlins • Matilda

7. How many chocolate bars did Charlie open to find the golden ticket? • Three • Seven • Nine

4. In the original movie, most of the chocolate bars were made of what? • Chocolate • Wax • Wood 5. In the 1971 movie, the river was really made of chocolate. • True • False

9. What are Oompa Loompas? • Taste testers • Factory workers • Chefs 9. Which song features in both the musical and the 1971 film? • Pure Imagination • The Candy Man Can • Strike That! Reverse It! 10. Which chocolate bar had the golden ticket for Charlie? • Nutty Crunch Surprise • Triple Dazzle Caramel • Wonka’s WhippleScrumptious Fudgemallow Delight

1) True. When Dahl was 13, Cadbury would send his school boxes of chocolate to taste, which included 12 bars in foil — one a “control” bar and 11 new flavors. 2) Matilda. 3) Gene Wilder. 4) Wood. 5) True. It was made of chocolate, cream and 15,000 gallons of water. 6) Tim Burton. 7) Three. 8) Factory workers. 9) Pure Imagination. 10) Wonka’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight

“Oz is a fantastical, larger-than-life setting full of characters who almost demand to sing,” he said, “and the witch herself is so full of big emotions — rage, ambition and longing — the idea was screaming to be a musical.” In addition, tucked into this timeless tale is enough eye-popping technical wizardry in Eugene Lee’s award-winning sets to keep everyone this side of Oz happy. Yet beyond the show’s infectious score and mind-boggling sets is a thoughtful universal theme. Actor David Garrison, who played The Wizard in Denver’s first touring engagement, wisely suggested: “There’s a Green Girl in all of us…. Everyone has felt like the outcast at one time or another. It’s part of the show’s broad appeal. It’s not a children’s show, but kids enjoy the fantasy of it, adolescents get the love story and adults see the political allegory. “This show is like a rock concert every night. It’s very heartening to see that. It’s what theatre does best.”

ASL interpreted, Audio-described and Open Captioned performance: Jun 1, 2pm

6. Who directed the 2005 movie remake starring Johnny Depp? • Mel Brooks • Tim Burton • Rob Reiner

3. What screen star played Willy Wonka in the 1971 movie? • Dustin Hoffman • Gene Wilder • Jim Carrey

Rain – A Tribute to the Beatles. Photo by Matt Christine Photography.

W

Wish you had seen The Beatles live? Wish you’d been born back then? Wish you hadn’t been in kindergarten when they set foot on American soil? Wish you’d gone to just one of their concerts? Wish, wish, wish… Well, wish no more. Leave it to Southern California to come up with a solution for gratifying every kind of appetite, this one included. It was not instant gratification — we’re told it took 20 years to put Rain, the concert, together — but when The Beatles hung up their guitars in 1970 and took off in four different directions, leaving thousands of fans wanting more, someone somewhere had to come up with the idea of cloning the Fab Four. And so they have. Along with founder Mark Lewis, the original guys who created (and originally impersonated) The Beatles — Joey Curatolo, Joe Bithorn, Steve Landes and Ralph Castelli — came to Rain, the band, and eventually Rain, the show, via Beatlemania. Now touring with Rain is Paul Curatolo, Steve Landes, Aaron Chiazza and Alastar McNeil. Some of them had become smitten with The Beatles on the night of February 9, 1964, when those four famous boys from Liverpool, England, stepped on the stage of “The Ed Sullivan Show.” The Beatles’ revolutionary brand of rock ’n’ roll made a worldwide impression and their popularity went straight through the roof. They recorded 13 albums in a short eight years, made memorable films and gave concerts everywhere. So it’s no wonder that

24

the suddenness of their breakup in 1970 sent shockwaves through the music world. Rain, the band, was formed in part out of this devastation, but even more out of a desire simply to keep the music alive. It was a labor of abiding love. They studied the songs, the gestures, the look, the dress and gradually built an impressive repertoire. Rain is more a concert than a show, with a stationary bandstand prominent center stage and a dazzling array of lighting and other perpetual motion special effects swirling around the musicians. Not only do the four performers play The Beatles’ songs including iconic favorites from “Abbey Road,” but they also meticulously match the Fab Four’s clothing, hairstyles and facial hair at changing periods of their performing lives. In this manner the members of Rain, the show, preserve the music and the musical legacy while giving audiences the momentary illusion of “being there.” It’s the same thrill Americans felt on that February night in 1964 and at every live concert thereafter. It’s a thrill they’ll be enchanted to rediscover now.

A “We recognize the impact the DCPA has on our creative economy and look forward to supporting the DCPA’s work for years to come.”

At PNC Bank, community investment is foundational to our values and interwoven into our corporate culture. We know we are only as successful as those that we serve, which is why we seek to strengthen the communities where we live and work by providing resources that help enhance early childhood education and support economic development. One of the areas we focus on is the arts. We have a legacy of supporting arts and culture communities across our footprint, as we understand the critical role they play in the continued success, stability and growth of our local communities. Not to mention in attracting and retaining a vibrant, talented workforce. Although we may be new to Denver, we’ve already started to implement this legacy through sponsorships with some of Denver’s most prestigious arts organizations, including the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado Ballet, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, and of course, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). “The DCPA continues to bring entertaining and timeless programming to the Denver community,” said Ryan Beiser, PNC regional president and head of Corporate Banking for Colorado. “We recognize the impact this organization has on our creative economy and look forward to supporting the DCPA’s work for years to come.” ©2019 The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. You’re familiar with the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” That’s why DCPA Education regularly seeks out partners to ensure that we are connecting with individuals and communities. Our 27-year partnership with Phamaly Theatre Company is our longest-lasting example of the power of community connection. Our multi-pronged relationship with this local acting company helps us connect to actors with disabilities. Throughout the year, Phamaly utilizes our Education studios for auditions and rehearsal space. Additionally, we offer acting instruction to company members, all of whom attend on scholarship thanks to our Lewis E. Meyers, Jr. Scholarship program. Another longstanding partnership is with the Denver Public Library. This collaboration allows DCPA Education to present our literacy-based Book Stars storytelling workshop and Shakespeare in the Parking Lot’s abridged performances of Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at library branches. Plus, in conjunction with our Theatre for Young Audiences program, DPL brings its book mobile on site, our actors record the play for the library’s Phone-A-Story program and we extend tickets and tours for distribution to library visitors. In an effort to broaden the representation of our diverse community in our class enrollment, we work with ReSchool’s Blueprint4Summer program, Opening Act and Upbeat Colorado. Blueprint4Summer is an initiative to narrow the gap between learners who have access to summer enrichment programs and those who do not. Working with Blueprint4Colorado, the DCPA offers summer camp scholarships and connects with families who might otherwise not be familiar with our programs. Opening Act works with young women of color to bolster leadership skills during their middle and high school careers. As a collaborator, DCPA Education provides scholarships for these participants to attend our classes. Since 2001, Upbeat Colorado has endeavored to make classical music instruction available to low-income families. Last year, DCPA Education was delighted to broaden these opportunities through scholarships to acting classes. Additionally, DCPA Education works with its cultural partners including the Mexican Cultural Center on Día del Niño at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science as well as the Colorado Symphony at its Cinco de Mayo celebration. These extraordinary events allow us to engage with individuals who are not necessarily patrons of theatre and introduce them to new opportunities through fun, interactive activities. For information on DCPA Education’s scholarship program or to explore partnership opportunities, please email education@dcpa.org.
