With the launch of our strategic plan, we are more committed than ever to our mission — to engage and inspire through the transformative power of live theatre. With a goal to create one million engagements by our 50th anniversary, we will present works by legendary playwrights and composers, reintroduce our family package, and “launch” a new project from Off-Center. This season Broadway and Theatre Company audiences will both experience works by two highly acclaimed artists: Stephen Sondheim (A Little Night Music and Company) and Pulitzer Prizewinner Lynn Nottage (Clyde’s and MJ). We will kick off the 25th Anniversary tour of MAMMA MIA! and welcome back Disney's Frozen, which originated right here in Denver. We have shows inspired by some of the biggest names in music — Tina Turner, Sting, Michael Jackson, Cher and Ruth Brown. We are welcoming families with Little Red, Annie, Shrek The Musical, Bluey’s Big Play, The Hip Hop Nutcracker, and A Christmas Carol. For individuals who like to be on the cusp of the “next big thing,” we will present the world premieres of Cebollas and Rubicon and continue our commitment to the Colorado New Play Summit. Additionally, Off-Center returns with its family-favorite presentation of Camp Christmas followed by Space Explorers: THE INFINITE, which will take audiences aboard the International Space Station. All of these shows plus our acting classes, free community performances, in-school programs, tours, student matinees, postshow discussions, fundraisers, venue rentals and collaborations. The prolific novelist, Toni Morrison, wrote in her book Beloved, “Freeing yourself was one thing; claiming ownership of that freed self was another.” Though Morrison was writing about enslaved people escaping from a plantation, her words aptly describe rock ’n’ roll legend Tina Turner’s life journey. During her life, Tina never shied away from sharing her story of trial and triumph. Her autobiography, I Tina was adapted into the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do With It? And now, her story is told on stages around the world in the Tony Awardwinning TINA — The Tina Turner Musical. Written by Katori Hall and directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the musical premiered on London’s West End before transferring to Broadway in 2019. Featuring hits such as “Proud Mary,” “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” “Simply the Best,” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” the musical follows Tina from her modest beginnings in the Jim Crow South to surviving an abusive marriage and becoming one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. The musical shows how Tina became a living example of reinvention. Tina, whose given name was Anna Mae Bullock, was born in Brownsville, Tennessee in 1939. Her parents moved the family to Nutbush when she was a child, but their toxic relationship kept Tina and her sisters bouncing between their parents and grandparents during childhood. When the couple split, and Tina’s mother Zelma Currie moved to St. Louis, she left Tina with her maternal grandmother. That decision strained their relationship for the rest of their lives, but Tina found solace in music.

For Roz White, who plays Zelma, Tina is the epitome of bravery. White remembers watching Tina’s “Let’s Stay Together” video on MTV at the age of 14. By then, White knew she had a voice, but hadn’t had a role model for a girl with a deeper sound until Tina’s Private Dancer album came out. From then on, White says her grandmother would ask her to sing Tina’s songs whenever she had friends over to play cards. As White got older, she recognized that the ferocity in Tina’s voice and dance moves was rooted in a deeper story. By the time Tina graduated from high school, she worked cleaning houses and as a nurse’s aide during the day, and sang in clubs at night. In the late 1950s, she met musician and band leader, Ike Turner, who renamed her Tina and helped her secure a recording contract. By 1960, they formed the Ike & Tina Turner Revue and toured the South while releasing Billboard hits. Then, came the 1966 hit “River Deep – Mountain High” and higher hemlines. The single was immensely popular in Europe, and led to Tina gracing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and to the duo opening up for The Rolling Stones. This is where her signature moves also caught the eye of little girls around the world. Standing at 5’4” Turner moved her legs when she was dancing like she was running for her life. She shook her body as if possessed by the Holy Spirit, trying to free her of the limited expectations placed on Black women from the South at that time. Tina’s shimmy and high kicks also became her ticket to freedom. She had followed in her mother’s footsteps

Tina’s Turner’s illustrious career is marked by 12 Grammy Awards, a sold out 50th anniversary world tour, and an induction into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2021 at the age of 81. However, Tina’s true success was ownership of her freed self. She found a pathway to inner peace through Buddhism and meditation; a unique sense of style; a new sound, and the courage to stand on her own. She was never defeated by tragedy, even when she couldn’t see a way out. “She’s someone who society thought would have a minimal future,” White says. Instead, “she surpassed everything projected on her by her family and the world. The world says a little girl from Nutbush can’t sell out a stadium in Brazil, but she did.”

and was in an abusive marriage with Ike. Glamorous gowns and glitter disguised the fact that she was fighting for her life behind-the-scenes. In 1976, with four boys, mounting legal fees and pennies to her name, Tina left her marriage to Ike. Just two years after the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which allowed women to have credit cards, loans and mortgages without a husband or male relative to co-sign, Tina struck out on her own. It was also at a time when divorce was still taboo and when women over the age of 35 were regarded as past their prime. Tina set out to prove them all wrong. For the next seven years, she scraped to make ends meet, performing in clubs, festivals and lounges in the U.S. and Europe. In her mid-40s, she released her fourth solo album, Private Dancer, donning leather corsets, fish net tights, a blonde wig and red lipstick. This was a new Tina. Turner won three Grammy Awards from Private Dancer, including Record of the Year for “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” She spent the better part of the next decade selling out arenas as well as rebuilding her life and her finances after the fallout of her marriage to Ike. However, she also found love along the way — both within herself and with her husband, record label executive Erwin Bach. The two met while Turner was on tour in Europe and lived in Switzerland for most of their relationship. The two were together until she passed on May 23, 2023.

STUCK IN LIMBO CLYDE’S IS A WORKPLACE COMEDY

THAT ELEVATES THE HUMBLE SANDWICH

There’s a truck stop in eastern Pennsylvania that sells the usual fare: burgers, fries, wraps, sandwiches. There is the occasional elevated offering like the Manuel Luis Echegoyen La Fiesta Burger, a beef patty topped with cotija, avocado, salsa verde and jalapeños. For the most part though, the menu is fairly uninspired, like a ham and cheese sandwich… on white. But for the kitchen staff, creating each sandwich, no matter how simple, is a work of art, an opportunity to connect with another person. “The sandwich is your pulpit, it’s where you preach the gospel of good eating,” Rafael, one of the cooks, explains. Welcome to Clyde’s the truck-stop setting for Lynn Nottage’s play of the same name. In it, characters may be talking about sandwiches (and describing some mouthwatering ones), but the story is really about any art. “I think the play is very intentionally about creative expression and having room to shape your own narrative through art,” Nottage told the Los Angeles Times. “That is really at its core. How do you take the simple ingredients that you have in front of you and create something that is singular and special? Something that when people bite into it, they understand fully who you are and you have a communion.” Nottage has been seeking communion with audiences for years with plays such as Intimate Apparel, about a black seamstress at the turn of the 20th century; and Ruined (produced by DCPA Theatre Company in 2011), about women in the Congo. More recently she wrote the book for MJ, a jukebox musical about pop star Michael Jackson (touring to Denver in April 2024). Along the way, she’s scooped up two Pulitzer Prizes. Clyde’s might be her most popular play to date. It was the most produced show of 2022 and seems apropos for a society emerging out of lockdown. The truck stop, the play tells us, is a liminal space. “You here cause you done run outta options, ain’t nobody gonna hire you except for Clyde,” Letitia, another one of the cooks explains. “Cuz if you here, you done something. We all done something. And we just biding our time ’till we can get to another place.” Everyone working at Clyde’s was once incarcerated, and most of them are now just stuck, marking time: Owner Clyde refuses to change her restaurant, Letita circles back to old flames, Rafael has a stalled love story, and another chef, Jason, is trying to escape a racist past tattooed all over his body. Jason may be familiar to some audiences. He’s a character in Nottage’s play Sweat (produced by DCPA Theatre Company in 2019), about a factory shutting down in Reading, Pennsylvania. In it, Jason turns violent against a scab during a factory strike and gives someone a traumatic brain injury. After being released, he’s now washed up at Clyde’s, and his racist gang tattoos do nothing to endear him to Rafael or Letitia, both people of color.

Jude was also motivated to take on the play because of how it tackles radical imagination and freedom through craft. “The characters wonder, if I can just dedicate myself to getting better at making a sandwich, what else could improve about my life?” explains Jude. And the play’s central question becomes, can a sandwich really make a difference? Nottage purposefully picked something humble. A sandwich is just a sandwich after all — despite the new found appreciation everyone who has seen “The Bear” has for what it takes to run a good sandwich shop. While the characters wax on about their dream sandwich and strive to put together a tuna melt with reverence, the audience would be forgiven for reluctantly agreeing with Clyde, who comments: “That bitch ass sandwich ain’t gonna change a damn thing.” Can you even dare to dream when you were incarcerated only to emerge from prison to flip burgers at a godforsaken truck stop? Montrellous acts as the Orpheus to the other chefs. He’s come into limbo to lead them out through example. They have a perfect right to dream unabashedly, he encourages, and to dedicate themselves to an art form no matter how humble. And when they finally do look out on that horizon, they may see that getting out of limbo is as simple as hanging up their aprons and walking out the door.

CLYDE’S

SEE YOURSELF ON STAGE

The three battle each other and Clyde, their foul-mouthed, foultempered boss. She is constantly ready to put someone down physically or emotionally the moment she senses anyone is getting out of line or having fun. Montrellous, the head chef, who smells like canola oil and patchouli, is Clyde’s antithesis and the calm center of the play. He was also formerly incarcerated, but is a mentor to other cooks. “He has a servant’s heart,” says Sekou Laidlow, who plays Montrellous. “And that kind of depth of humanity is what I think people should witness, particularly from one who has endured the confines of prison. It is a direct critique of what society says Black men are.” The play’s emotional depths are one thing that drew director Jamil Jude to the show. He was last at the DCPA in 2022 when he directed Choir Boy. For that show, he had to get his actors to showcase the soul-stirring nature of gospel music. For this one, he needed his performers to learn… knife skills? Yep. There’s actual cooking on stage (with real knives). “It’ll be a little smell-o-vision for the audience,” Jude says. But also culinary skills were necessary to “learn just how these characters go about their job in this kitchen,” Jude adds.
