Next season we are thrilled to be the first stop for the national tour of Pippin. I have been following this remarkable revival, visiting the production in its pre-Broadway start at the American Repertory Theatre on the Harvard Campus and then seeing the Broadway production at the ever-so-lovely Music Box Theatre in New York. I guarantee that this musical will be a delight that you will remember for years to come. The national tour opening of Pippin adds to our growing list of tour openings. These so far include Sunset Boulevard, The Lion King, August: Osage County, The Book of Mormon and Peter and the Starcatcher. Denver has become a premier “go to” location for Broadway tour openings and this is due in no small part to our wonderful patrons: You. Enjoy The Book of Mormon, whether this is your first time or, as in my case, the seventh. n

IT’S NOT

RELIGION, BUT CLOSE For Robert Lopez, one of the authors of The Book of Mormon, art, music and story-telling are a path to religious experience. Really.

S

b y R o b W e i n e rt- K e n d t

Songwriter Robert Lopez doesn’t mind that The Book of Mormon, the Broadway juggernaut he co-authored with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, is popularly thought of as the “South Park” musical because of Stone and Parker’s involvement. He knows full well, having coauthored the puppet sensation Avenue Q some years back, what it’s like to introduce a form-breaking original show that’s not a jukebox musical or an adaptation of a movie. “When we did Avenue Q, it was really hard to convey to people what it was supposed to be, and why people should go see it,” said Lopez in a recent interview from his home in Brooklyn. “So I understand why the producers used the ‘South Park’ hook to promote this show. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to see a show called The Book of Mormon if it wasn’t by them.” But Lopez isn’t shy about setting the record straight. “It was a show that was my idea,” he said, adding crucially, “and when we met I discovered they happened to have the same idea.” ndeed, the initial Lopez/Stone/Parker summit is by now the stuff of musical theatre legend, on a par with the night Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins stitched together “Rose’s Turn” out of bits and pieces of Gypsy’s score. When Stone and Parker went to see Avenue Q on Broadway in 2003, while in the midst

of working on their own puppet-centered project (the film Team America), they were flattered, if a little puzzled, to see themselves thanked in Lopez’s Playbill bio, since they didn’t know him. That in turn led to an informal post-show meeting and eventually to a collaboration around their shared fascination with Mormonism. he Playbill tribute was there, Lopez recalled, because Parker and Stone’s 1999 musical film— South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut— had been an inspiration for Lopez and his Avenue Q co-writer, Jeff Marx. In fact, Sondheim himself has gone on record to call that profane but tuneful film the best musical of its decade. “Well, it was a pretty barren 10 years,” Lopez joked, before explaining his own admiration for the film. “It shows an understanding not only of how musicals are structured and how they work but of the meaning of the form. It used the optimism of musicals as a metaphor for the optimism of childhood, against the backdrop of the satire. It was really about the eyes of a child.” It’s important, Lopez continued, that a musical not be simply a play with songs as garnish; form and content should harmonize. “When you’re writing one of these shows, you have to figure out what the music means to the story,” said Lopez, who met Marx in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop and continues

T

to moderate sessions there. “In Avenue Q, it was about education, about learning life lessons—it was a musical children’s show for grownups. With Book of Mormon it’s a) the naïveté of the missionaries, and b) their beliefs. And music embodies those feelings.” The Mormon-missionaries-abroad premise that gives the musical its shape wasn’t among the initial ideas of any of the authors, said Lopez. “My idea was to read the Book of Mormon and find the epic story that, in telling it, would make fun of itself,” said Lopez. “Their idea was to do the story of Joseph Smith as a musical. Then they suggested we all do it together, which I thought was a great idea.” ut in October of that year, that notion seemed to be moot when “South Park” aired the episode “All About Mormons,” which irreverently recounted the story of Smith, Mormonism’s founding prophet, in parallel flashbacks with the story of a present-day Mormon family newly arrived in South Park. Lopez wasn’t crestfallen, exactly, but he figured that Parker and Stone had taken the idea and run with it. So he and Marx were pleasantly surprised to get an email from the “South Park” provocateurs, revisiting the idea of their collaboration. “We were like, ‘Oh, we thought you had done that idea already,’ ” Lopez said.

The Book of Mormon Second National Tour

— Robert Lopez, co-author, The Book of Mormon The writers found that not only was there much more to say about Mormons than could be conveyed in a 22-minute TV episode, but that the story of this relatively new religion was an ideal way to treat larger satirical themes. “We discovered that we all had the same feelings about religion and God—that God doesn’t exist and yet somehow he does,” said Lopez. “And that even though the stories are made up, the leap of faith that people make makes them better people.” hile Parker and Stone knew Mormons from their Colorado upbringing, New York native Lopez’s fascination was more literary (Avenue Q’s Marx left the project fairly early in its development). In scholar Harold Bloom’s comparative-literature class at Yale, Lopez recalled, Bloom favorably compared Smith’s fantastical Mormon scriptures to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. “The thing about the Mormonism that

W

the book of mormon

“We discovered that we all had the same feelings about religion and God— that God doesn’t exist and yet somehow he does, and that even though the stories are made up, the leap of faith that people make makes them better people.”

I’ve always been interested in,” Lopez explained, “is the way you can talk about all religion through it. You don’t even have to make fun of it. You just tell an audience what Mormons believe and people get the idea: This is a fully functioning religion, it’s real, it does change people’s lives—and they believe all these stories that sound ridiculous. Since it’s so recent, it doesn’t have all the respect that we give the Judeo-Christian traditions; with those, since our mind can’t stretch back that far, we can almost believe that somehow God walked the earth back then. With Mormonism, you can see, ‘Oh, this is how religions start.’ ” If Lopez’s interest in Mormonism in particular was secondhand, his own interest in religion is more personal. “I went through my own crisis of faith,” he said. “I went to church; I grew up Catholic-ish. I did believe when I was young.” His beliefs faded in college, as they do for many, though not quite for the usual reasons. While many drift away from religion as they explore their sexual identity or are confronted with radically different points of view, it was in fact up-close exposure to religious practice that soured Lopez. “In college I sang in choirs and I started to see the mechanics behind the Mass,” he said. “There is quite literally a backstage, and the Mass is quite literally stagecraft. Where I went they had incense, and there was an organ that had something called a zimbalstern—a wheel that tinkles when you push the key and makes it feel like there are angels in the church. There are stories, there’s a throughline, there’s a snack. It’s everything that theatre does; it’s basically a proto-musical.” He even recalled one priest saying to another, with a knowing sigh worthy of a Broadway hoofer, “Two shows today.” or a while, like many freshly minted non-believers, Lopez said, his attitude was, “Forget about that stuff. It wasn’t until later that I started to think: What is real about it? I started to look at the way people behave when they do think there’s a God versus the way people behave when they think they’re forsaken, in a cold, empty universe with only science. Science is a kind of religion itself; we don’t all check out every experiment for ourselves. We take a lot on faith.” Though he now stops short of fully re-upping on his childhood faith, Lopez clearly feels, as The Book of Mormon demonstrates, that religion is a part of human experience and that, on balance, it may be a net good. “God, whether he does or doesn’t actu-

ally exist, does exist as part of the human experience,” said Lopez. “That’s undeniable.” And if his glimpses behind the curtain of the Catholic Mass first made him question the objective truth of the narrative behind the ritual, Lopez harbors no doubts about the value of stage storytelling. “Any kind of literature, any kind of art that tells a story is a form of religious experience—it’s a consciousness-changing endeavor,” said Lopez. “It transmits spirit through it. In musical theatre, we’re lifting people up, giving them stories and arming them for experiences they encounter in life.” He almost makes it sound like a mission. n Rob Weinert-Kendt is associate editor at American Theatre and has written about theatre and the arts for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Variety, The Guardian and The San Francisco Chronicle.

ecause art requires a fertile and creative environment to thrive, Abend Gallery Fine Art and Framing proudly sponsors The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). It is this community of theatre, music and dance, coupled with the visual arts, that has nourished Denver and allowed Abend to flourish over the past 20 years. The artists of Abend are especially excited to participate in Saturday Night Alive. Each year, Abend artists donate pieces in order to support the educational programming offered through the DCPA. It is this kind of engaging outreach that gives children the opportunity to experience, learn and enjoy the arts, and fosters a deeper understanding and a lifelong appreciation. Located in the historic Wyman District at the corner of Colfax and York, just north of the Denver Botanic Gardens, Abend’s mission is to present a broad range of styles, mediums and subjects. As such, the gallery has continually shown Denver patrons some of the finest artists working today. Of the award-winning artists in the gallery, many offer painting demonstrations and workshops for students of all levels. Instructors include Bruce A. Gomez, Arleta Pech, and Robert Spooner.

Patrons of Abend Gallery Fine Art have come to expect the unexpected. With approximately 6,000 sq. ft. of space, Abend is able to showcase an eclectic mix of work from contemporary artists such as Zoa Ace, Louis Recchia and Jennifer Bobola, alongside traditional representational works by accomplished painters such as Zhaoming Wu and Teresa Vito, as well as three-dimensional works by Mark Friday. Abend also features internationally known master artists such as Evelyne Boren, but takes particular joy in introducing collectors to promising emerging artists such as Jim Beckner, whose energetic and lively brushwork truly captures the pulse of a city or the compelling and insightful figurative works by Tammi Otis. Abend hosts juried exhibitions and charitable events, in addition to regular monthly shows. Abend carries an extensive selection of fine art in its inventory, and the staff is well versed in art as well as framing. They offer personalized art consultation to corporations, emerging companies, as well as private and personal consultation in the acquisition of fine art. n The gallery is a longtime member of the Denver Art Dealers Association and is open Tuesday–Saturday from 10am–6pm.

What makes Scrooge’s story so ripe for dramatic transformation? Indelible characters, an emotion-packed story with a killer ending, special effects, music and, of course, the festive Christmas setting. This poignant, joyous and redemptive story delivers on all scores. It’s a touching human drama, a bold morality tale and a scary ghost story with humor, spectacle, song, dance and a cast of thousands (well, a very large cast). Join us for this inspiring Christmas ritual, whether for the first time or the tenth. ASL interpreted and Audio-Described performance Dec 15 @ 1:30pm.

oBiz Financial and its family of services—Colorado Business Bank, CoBiz Insurance, CoBiz Wealth and Green Manning & Bunch—applaud The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) and its cultural contributions to Colorado. CoBiz believes the DCPA’s mission—providing internationally acclaimed theatre to the Colorado community and arts education to children—is crucial for a vibrant, well-rounded city. As school funding for arts education decreases, the DCPA and other arts organizations are taking on the responsibility of engaging and enhancing the creative growth of young people. The imagination and innovation spurred by the arts have never been more important to our economic vitality than they are today.

In its 13-year history, Biz Bash, the company’s signature concert fundraiser, has distributed more than $2.7 million to Colorado children-focused, not-for-profit charities. The CoBiz Cares Foundation is an employee-funded, company-matched, grantgiving organization led by a diverse board of employees. Since its inception in 2009, the Foundation has granted more than $500,000 to worthy not-for-profit organizations. In addition, a culture of wellness and community involvement has led to countless volunteer hours, projects and team walks. CoBiz encourages other companies and individuals to join in support of the DCPA to create an ever more energetic and enlightened community. n
