To Our Season Dear Boulder Ballet Community, It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 2021/2022 performance season. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to the arts and for continuing to support live performance. We have an engaging season planned for you including classics from internationally acclaimed artists as well as boundary pushing original works created by some of the nation’s most up-and-coming choreographers. Here at Boulder Ballet we are pleased to curate a season that prioritizes diversity in the field highlighting some of the nation’s most influential artists. Black Voice of Dance features works by Sidra Bell, Gregory Dawson and Amy Hall Garner. Boulder Ballet is committed to expanding our programming by bringing you works by trail-blazing contemporary choreographers and expanding the opportunities for Colorado audiences to have access to fundamentally groundbreaking dance. Masterworks features excerpts of the classical repertoire, Raymonda along with the fall program’s fan favorite The Devil Ties My Tongue by Amy Seiwert. The classic modern work Air’s by Paul Taylor makes a welcome comeback to The Dairy ARTS Center. This year Ballet in the Park will expand to two nights at the Boulder Bandshell. We will showcase highlights from the season at this lively outdoor venue. Bring a friend and join us for an evening of dance under the stars. School Programming: Josephina’s Story is this year’s Storybook Ballet, an annual tradition of the Boulder Ballet School choreographed by Ana Claire. BB2/Choreographers Showcase is an evening all about our school. Our advanced students showcase their competition solos and feature student generated choreography set on their peers. Come witness up and coming artists—remember their names, as we later see them appear on stages around the world, (Isabella Boylston, now a principal with American Ballet Theater once performed the littlest duck while studying here at Boulder Ballet). Since our founding in 1982, Boulder Ballet has grown to become a dance company with a reputation for staging both iconic ballets and new works. Over the years we have performed such classics as The Nutcracker, Cinderella and The Sleeping Beauty on a variety of stages in Boulder and beyond. Equally adept at presenting contemporary works, Boulder Ballet is thrilled to bring a colorful and engaging program to our audiences. If this year has taught us anything, it is that performing for a live audience is a privilege for which we are grateful. Thank you for joining us and please enjoy the show! Warmly, Claudia Anata Hubiak Executive Director

Boulder Ballet

Photo: Amanda Tipton

Since our founding in 1982, Boulder Ballet has grown to become dance company with a reputation for staging engaging and groundbreaking works. Boulder Ballet’s vision is to be a leading arts organization celebrated for its excellence and inclusivity. We aspire to be a bold dance institution that creates a nurturing environment of artistic growth and builds a community of outstanding humans. As part of our mission, Boulder Ballet strives to offer unique perspectives in dance and bring diversity to our performances and community. It is an important focus for our organization to give opportunity to voices that previously have been unheard. By seeking talented choreographers of diverse backgrounds we aim to offer a colorful spectrum of brilliance across our dance landscape. Future audiences will enjoy choreographers that offer creative works with different perspectives, giving greater value to all voices in doing so. We are proud to start off this new year with a program that features all African American Choreographers during Black History Month. In addition, we are thrilled to bring the choreography of dance icons Amy Seiwert, Paul Taylor and Christopher Wheeldon to Boulder. The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in an atmosphere of creative excellence. As a professional-track ballet school, BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment. Our students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancers Competition and Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). Boulder Ballet is extremely proud of graduates currently performing with American Ballet Theatre, Dutch National Ballet, Greek National Opera Ballet, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet (London), and Boulder Ballet among others.

Welcome Welcome to Black Voices of Dance. Thank you for joining us in this celebration of nationally recognized dancemakers. It is not uncommon to feature artists with the outstanding reputations that we are this evening, nor is it distinct that their works might be in the same program. What is unusual is that these masters have not previously been presented together here in Boulder. Boulder Ballet is excited to share this compelling evening of dance with you, our welcome guests. Our efforts to feature African American choreographers reflects, in part, a desire to create works that Boulder Ballet dancers could cherish and share with a community that is hungry for diverse dance performances. It also shines a light on the disparity that remains in representation of all historically excluded communities. Through the cultivation of these relationships that spur creativity, we hope to maintain the works within our greater repertoire to share with audiences in the future and maintain the artists’ perspective and intention while further defining who we are in the process. We hope our greater collection of works will not only affect who we are as performers, but effect how you see us. To continue to define ourselves as a dynamic dance company, we eagerly present three such choreographers tonight. Amy Hall Garner, Sidra Bell and Gregory Dawson have each curated their careers as dance artists masterfully and continue to do so with distinction. Boulder Ballet is excited and privileged to share this compelling evening of dance with you, our welcome guests. Lance Hardin Artistic Director Boulder Ballet

Come to Light Choreography by Amy Hall Garner Come To Light was created virtually in the winter of 2021. Meaning, the choreographer was never physically in the same space as the dancers. Created exclusively through screen time, this work is a true testament to communication, articulation, and the appreciation of classical vocabulary in ballet. The marriage of music and movement is the foundation of this work. It symbolizes the dedication and love of this art form and the importance of bringing dance to light. Music: Antonio Vivaldi, Lara Downes, Sebastian Bartmann Dancers: Thurs, Saturday(eve) Sunday Phoebe Magna, Melissa Halpin, Carly Hambridge, Emma Michaux, Kelly Dornan, Ross Freeman, Matthew Helms, Philip Perez, Hunter Solomon. …getting to something real Choreography by Gregory Dawson World Premiere 2022 “When we allow ourselves to reveal truths by avoiding layering with the unnecessary, we then give way to the state of authentic motion. Working from truths allows us to be open and giving which then enables us to share, to be free to express our voices with respect, compassion and a sense of worth and pride.” ~Gregory Dawson Music: James Baldwin, Ron Kurti, Dalmacio Payomo, Gregory Dawson Dancers: Kelly Dornan, Gianna Forte, Carly Hambridge, Melissa Halpin, Phoebe Magna, Emma Michaux, Erina Tanaka, Ross Freeman, Matthew Helms, Gavin Hounslow, Philip Perez, Hunter Solomon.

About Gregory Dawson Gregory Dawson is the Artistic Director of dawsondancesf, the Assistant Chair of Dance for the California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA), and is on faculty for the Alonzo King LINES Ballet BFA and Professional Training programs. Gregory founded dawsondancesf in 2007 as an outlet for his choreographic vision. With movement that is raw and deliberate, Gregory uses the classical vernacular to push choreographic boundaries in unpredictable ways. Balancing grace with highly kinetic motion, he allows his dancers to utilize and showcase every ounce of their animal energy. In addition to choreographing 25 creations for dawsondancesf, Gregory has created over 100 new works for LINES’ educational programs. He is regularly commissioned by companies around the country and his work has premiered on such organizations as Boston Conservatory, Menlowe Ballet, Robert Moses’ Kin, Webster University, Tacoma Metropolitan Ballet, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company. In 2010 Gregory’s “which light in the sky is us,” (a commission for Company C Contemporary Ballet) was nominated for an Isadora Duncan Award. More recently, he choreographed Ungesehen on BalletX which premiered in 2021.

Community Engagement

Boulder Ballet has grown and flourished for more than thirty-five years on the Front Range. Our roots are deep in Colorado; so too, is our commitment to the community through education and outreach programs. Our primary goal is to reach those who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience dance. Our in-school assembly program, outreach programming, is primarily focused on bringing dance into Title 1 elementary and middle schools. The new assembly-based program offered is Dances of America which features Afro Hip-Hop, Latin, tap and modern, contemporary as well as ballet dances. This program connects with all students and demonstrates the expression, precision, and athleticism of differing styles of dance.

IN-SCHOOL OUTREACH RESIDENCY PROGRAMS Boulder Ballet’s artist-in-residence program for elementary and middle schools features a Boulder Ballet instructor in residence at the school for up to one week. This program is designed to make a long-lasting impact on the minds and hearts of the students through the integration of dance and movement into the school’s curriculum. Boulder Ballet’s outreach program is focused on teaching students the value of creative expression without judgment. Through the integration of dance and movement, the program inspires confidence in creativity, joy in collaborating with others, and passion for interpretive dramatic art, all based around state standards for Physical Education. Please visit boulderballet. org for more information.

COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES Boulder Ballet is equally committed to the successful community outreach programs Nutcracker Preview Night and Ballet in the Park. Since 2005, we have reached over 20,000 underserved individuals who are frequently excluded from exposure to the performing arts. These two programs were specifically designed to remove the financial barrier to participation. For our Nutcracker Preview Night performance, Boulder Ballet works with key social-service organizations to distribute free tickets to the full-scale final dress rehearsal of The Nutcracker. Our outdoor summer concert series, Ballet in the Park, also reaches out to low-income families and seniors on fixed incomes as well as the community at large in an effort to make the arts accessible to all. Please reach out to info@boulderballet.org if you would like to be added to our list for donated tickets to these events. This spring we will also offer our educational program Dances of America at the Lakewood Cultural Center on Saturday, March 5. Ticket prices for this special performance have been kept low so that the whole family can attend. We look forward to offering this opportunity in the Denver metro area to attend a live performance and be immersed in the arts. Tickets: https://lakewood.showare.com
