Thank you so much for joining us at Boulder Ballet’s The Nutcracker! This production holds a uniquely special place in the heart of every dance artist. It’s often one of the first ballets we experience in life, it becomes a rite of passage as a performer, and every year The Nutcracker amplifies the holiday spirit through wonder and joy. It is a true gift to share this magical production with you all.
This season we are unlocking more of the unseen moments that go into every performance. For example, if you arrived early today you may have seen the main curtain was actually open, revealing all the stage preparations necessary that are often hidden from the public eye. It takes the production crew two full days to load in the sets for Nutcracker, and three full days of rehearsal with performers to make sure all the technical aspects are dialed in before the first public performance. Then, before every day of performances, the crew comes in early to prep the stage and check lights, the dancers have a full warm-up, then the stage gets mopped and set pieces are put in place.
We are so thankful for all the unseen heroes who make this production possible. Behind the scenes of every Nutcracker production is a full stage crew, wardrobe and design team, a mighty group of volunteers, teachers, administrators, and hundreds of parents and family members who support the 60+ students participating annually in this holiday tradition. It truly takes a village to make this production possible, and the fact that it happens every year is real-life magic.
Thank you again for joining us for this special celebration. We wish you all a wonderful holiday season, and a fantastic new year ahead!
Happy holidays, Ben Needham-Wood

The Stahlbaum family gathers for their annual Christmas Eve party, inviting friends and family to share in the celebration. Their young daughter, Clara, is brimming with excitement for the festivities to come. The night is filled with joyful dancing, delicious desserts, and Uncle Drosselmeyer’s enchanting magic. Clara’s heart swells with delight when she is gifted a Nutcracker doll. However, her joy is short-lived when the Nutcracker accidentally breaks. Thankfully, Uncle Drosselmeyer works his magic and mends the Nutcracker. As the night’s revelry comes to an end, Clara drifts to sleep with the anticipation of Christmas morning.
The clock strikes midnight and the ordinary turns extraordinary. An army of mice and rats, led by the fearsome Rat King, emerges. Clara finds herself caught in a surreal struggle, with her beloved Nutcracker springing to life to defend her. He rallies an army of toy soldiers to battle the Rat King. Just as the Rat King seems to get the upper hand, Clara summons her courage and, with a determined thud, topples the Rat King, saving her valiant Nutcracker. The mice and soldiers begin to fade away, and the Nutcracker magically transforms into a dashing prince, leading Clara on a magical odyssey through a snow-draped forest. As Act 2 begins, Clara and the Nutcracker adventure through the ethereal realm of the angels, and ultimately arrive in the enchanting Land of the Sweets. They are greeted by Uncle Drosselmeyer who introduces them to the gracious Sugar Plum Fairy and her gallant Cavalier. The Land’s band of players recount the valiant battle against the Rat King, and in honor of Clara’s heroism the Sugar Plum Fairy orchestrates a joyous celebration. A medley of captivating dances representing Chocolate, Coffee, Marzipan, and other worldly delights perform for Clara. Eventually it is time for Clara to return home, so she and the Nutcracker wave goodbye.
Clara drifts back to her own bed, the memory of the sweets lingering and filling her with joy. Whether it was real or just a dream, it was a truly spectacular adventure.

e Schramm Foundation
When childcare is affordable, everyone benefits! Children, families and communities thrive when working parents have access to affordable care and children have opportunities to connect with supportive mentors. That’s why the Y works to make childcare accessible to under-resourced families in our communities.
But we need your help!
Donate today to give families access to programs that uplift, empower and nurture.
