Letter to: The editor Dear Bravo, I just wanted to say a big thank you for introducing me to swing dancing at Washington Heights Arts Center! I was intimidated at first and worried because I didn’t have a partner, but that wasn’t a problem at all as many students signed up by themselves. Diane was so welcoming and professional, and made it really, really fun. I just signed up for salsa and am also about to try my hand at a pottery class. I never knew I was so ‘arty’! Thanks again! – Letter to Virginia, dated August 20, 1937
Thirty years ago, artist Sharon Bond Brown’s life was forever changed. She found trash bags discarded in the alley behind her Denver home, filled with photographs, letters and keepsakes belonging to her neighbor Virginia, who had passed away some years back. Sharon, who is endlessly intrigued with the most basic of human interactions, collected the stuffed bags, took them home and began piecing together her neighbor’s life as it was lived from 1936 to 1944.
10
September-December 2013 |
The discovery of those trash bags opened a world of artistic possibility to Sharon and launched a labor of love, titled Virginia: A Life, that has spanned three decades. Within that time, Sharon has produced, from small black and white photographs, almost 90 paintings of Virginia and her family, including her husband Ed, and her sister Mercedes. In the works, which vary from small watercolors to 24”x36” oil paintings, Sharon injects color, warmth and humanity into the everyday. The collected works offer a glimpse into an iconic time in our collective history when big American cars, fantastic hats and fur coats were all the rage. During a tour of her shared studio/home space in the River North District of Denver, Sharon exclaimed, “I love painting people when they were really great looking, when all the important things like getting
engaged and married were happening.” She also has a particular fondness for the fashion of the 1930s and ’40s noting, “Everyone dressed so well. You had maybe two dresses but, boy, you looked great in them!” Capturing the big moments in Virginia’s life has put a spotlight on what Sharon likes to call an “uncommonly common life,” full of excitement, love, worry and disappointment. What is remarkable about the series is Sharon’s ability to take the most average of candid family photographs and produce a piece that conveys such warmth and feeling. The resulting works leave the viewer with the sense that they know the subject, or perhaps are viewing paintings of their own family members. Sharon has likened this lifelong project to detective work, saying she was hooked after reading the first sentence of the first letter and will never be done painting Virginia. The daughter of psychiatrists and a sociology major in college herself, Sharon makes a habit of digging at the psychology and emotion contained in
her subjects. This passion for the story behind what otherwise might seem mundane is what makes Virginia: A Life such a remarkable series. Despite her intimate familiarity with the 70-year-old photographs, letters and keepsakes, Sharon remains endlessly inspired. Each time she opens a letter or pulls out the boxes heavy with photographs, she discovers something new. See Sharon’s painted works alongside historical artifacts from the 1930s and ’40s, including a vintage automobile, textiles, accessories and household items.

The Villa Italia Shopping Center opened in 1966. At the time, Villa Italia was the largest enclosed retail space west of the Mississippi River. Villa Italia boasted Montgomery Ward, J.C. Penney and Joslins Department Store as its largest anchor tenants. After a long decline in shoppers and store tenant occupancy, Villa Italia was demolished in 2000 to make way for the Belmar downtown district.
Lakewood residents remember Villa Italia: “I remember around 1967, Joe Finney, from the Lawrence Welk Show, performed out in front of Penneys.” “I used to go to Villa to see Blinky the Clown.” “My husband proposed to me at the El Chicos in 1978.”

The 40 West Award Winners exhibit, sponsored by the 40 West Arts District, which runs along Lakewood’s historic West Colfax corridor, features works by over 20 local artists who received awards of excellence during the past year’s five juried shows at the 40 West Arts Gallery. The works cover a wide range of artistic styles and media, including painting, photography, mixed media and sculpture. These artists were among the more than 100 creative individuals who helped put 40 West Arts on the metro area cultural map, which included a designation by the State of Colorado as an official creative district. Since the late 1980s, Sharon Bond Brown has painted 85 “Virginia” paintings based on old photographs she found in the trash. Virginia: A Life is an exhibit celebrating an ordinary life. What drew Sharon to these materials was her interest in authentic voice (the letters), the period (1936-1944), and her fascination with old family snapshots. ot every city in the country can claim to be on the cutting edge of ukulele awesomeness, but Lakewood has carved out a unique niche. The Washington Heights Arts Center is home to the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra and continues to push the boundaries of community music education. “This is an instrument that is right for anyone who doesn’t have a lot of time but would still like to play music,” said ukulele instructor Gary Jugert. “It doesn’t matter your age, or what music you like, the ukulele is ready so you can unplug from your iPod.” Jugert began teaching introductory ukulele classes in January 2012 through the City’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts programs. To the surprise of many, the classes filled quickly with young and old alike wanting to give the diminutive instrument a strum. Since that time, the program has expanded to include one-day workshops and six-week classes for beginners, as well as four-week intermediate classes on special

The orchestra meets at Washington Heights every Sunday to practice, has given a number of concerts around the Denvermetro area and has done outreach education as far away as Steamboat Springs. RMUO has attracted players of all skill levels throughout the city, some with strong musical backgrounds. Whether you’re an interested beginner without a ukulele or a more advanced player ready to join the orchestra, we’ve got something for you! Don’t hesitate to join one of our ukulele classes this fall.
