Victory Gardens in America When people typically think of wartime gardening movements, most often the images conjured are of large garden plots located in American schoolyards, neighborhoods, baseball fields, urban areas and homes during World War II (1939-1945). Conceived almost three decades earlier, the concept of the war garden originated in Europe during World War I (1914-1918) as a way to provide fruits, vegetables and other edible plants to both soldiers and citizens. In both the United States and abroad, war gardens were an organized effort by which civilians could assist in providing food and personal support to the war effort. As part of the war effort at home during WWI, Americans were encouraged by the Food and Drug Administration to reduce waste, replace scarce ingredients with plentiful ones and conserve food through canning and drying. Efforts to educate the public on issues regarding food preservation and the nutritional content of vegetables and fruits helped the FDA convince American civilians that they could eat less without suffering the effects of malnutrition, thereby conserving valuable edible resources for the troops. Even some prominent U.S. parks, including New York’s Riverside and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, were utilized for planting during the victory garden effort. During WWII, American citizens were once again encouraged to “sow the seeds of victory.” This renewed initiative became somewhat of a morale booster, empowering citizens of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds to work together to provide sustenance to the all-important war effort. A wide spectrum of private and public businesses, schools, and

agencies provided plots of land, seeds, and promotional material in order to encourage individual and community gardening. After food rationing began in January 1940, war gardens became essential to supporting the healthy appetites both on the front lines and at home. Growing vegetables and fruits at home ensured that the precious resources of transportation and fuel were reserved for military purposes, and it maintained the maximum nutritional value in the resulting produce. These public gardening efforts eventually grew to become essential to much more than just hungry stomachs. In 1943, home gardens alone produced a staggering 8 million pounds of edibles.

For more information on how you can grow your own victory garden, please check out the Smithsonian Institution’s Grow Your Own Victory Garden! at http://www.gardens.si.edu/comelearn.

ARTS WEEK LAKEWOOD In its third year, INSPIRE Arts Week Lakewood is an expanded 11-day event, June 5-15, that encourages local residents to experience all of Lakewood’s heritage, culture and arts offerings. All participating Lakewood art and cultural organizations are offering discounts or free special events. INSPIRE Arts Week Lakewood grew out of Lakewood’s participation in a 2028 visioning process supported by the then Colorado Council on the Arts (now Colorado Creative Industries). “We really listened to what people were saying about how many art groups, art businesses and talented artists we have in Lakewood and how we really needed to get the word out about all these fantastic organizations. We convened a meeting with all the organizations, and INSPIRE Arts Week was developed to showcase what groups were already doing,” says Lorene Joos, arts curator for the City of Lakewood. We hope to see you at INSPIRE Arts Week Lakewood! For more information, visit www.Lakewood.org/Inspire to connect to the websites of the participating organizations.

Rockin’ Block Party Block parties are reported to have originated on New York City’s East Side during World War I, when an entire city block was roped off for the residents to celebrate and honor the members of that block who had joined the war effort. During these initial years, block parties consisted primarily of parades and the singing of patriotic songs. Block parties experienced a renewed surge in popularity during the 1970s when members of a single neighborhood would congregate for a holiday, event or simply for community enjoyment. These more modern block parties often included food, music, dancing, lawn games and other family-friendly activities. The City of Lakewood is proud to continue the tradition of getting neighbors together by hosting the Rockin’ Block Party, a free community event at the Lakewood Heritage Center. This year’s event offers fun for all ages with historical tours, games, live music and a family-friendly movie under the stars. Saturday, June 8 5-7 p.m. Museum Tours, Games & Activities
