The Essential Figure: Crucial Elements of the Sculpted Human - A Juried Sculpture Exhibit
Lakewood Cultural Center presents its 13th Annual Sculpture Exhibit, The Essential Figure. This year’s exhibit focuses on the human figure and what is crucial to a sculpture. Guest juror sculptor Harold Linke encourages artists to celebrate the human figure. June 4–August 7 Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Thursday, June 4

Special Juror’s Exhibition Concurrent with The Essential Figure
Harold Linke sculpts movement, sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract. Twenty years ago he began creating classical, expressive figurative bronzes. Seven years ago he broke that mold by moving to flowing distilled white sculpture. He discarded the detail, texture, volume and the color--leaving only plane (and plain) surfaces that he curved and stretched into figurative dance gestures. Spirit of Lakewood Gallery
Lakewood Heritage Center’s permanent gallery highlights significant local events through the 20th century including early settlers, May Bonfils-Stanton’s ownership of farmland, which later became city municipal buildings, Villa Italia mall and up to Lakewood’s incorporation as a city. THEN: Denver once had an extensive electric rail transit
system that included over 250 miles of city tracks and 40 miles of high-speed interurban railcars connecting Denver with Golden and Boulder. Thousands of riders used the system to visit downtown Denver for shopping, going to work and school, seeing friends and for recreation. Rich in local history, Car No. 25 was built by Denver’s own Woeber Carriage Company and placed into service on February 17, 1911. Car No. 25 was one of seven cars that provided passenger service on the Denver & Intermountain Interurban’s 13-mile Denver-Lakewood-Golden line from 1911 to 1950. With the proliferation of the automobile and a new bus system, rail transit service was abandoned in 1950.
NOW: Come see the beautifully restored car in person! Lakewood Looks Back: Colorado Christian University In each issue, BRAVO examines history in and around our community in Lakewood. This summer, we profile Colorado Christian University, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year
In 1914, Denver Bible Institute was founded at Glenarm Place in Denver by Rev. Clifton Fowler to train young people for Christian service. The first classes encompassed only two students and one teacher, but from those modest beginnings, Colorado Christian University was born. By 1945, Denver Bible Institute had grown to become Denver Bible College, a four-year college with three academic schools: the
College of Liberal Arts, the Theological School and the Bible Institute. Four years later in 1949, the school became Rockmont College. In the mid-1960s, Rockmont College purchased a nearly fifty-acre estate located near the northeast corner of West Alameda Avenue and South Garrison Street in what is now the city of Lakewood, where one house was enlarged and the other modified as the nucleus of the library and dining room. With mature trees and two beautiful ponds, the newly purchased land seemed a perfect setting for a college campus. By the end of Rockmont’s first year of operation at the West Alameda campus in 1967, plans were on the drawing board for a gym, playing fields, additional dormitories and classrooms and a student center. Enrollment grew along with the campus, with Rockmont becoming a fully accredited college in 1981. In 1985, Rockmont merged with Western Bible Institute, located in Morrison since 1948, and the two became Colorado
Christian College. In 1989, Colorado Baptist University joined Colorado Christian College resulting in the institution known today as Colorado Christian University. The University now consists of two schools, the College of Undergraduate Studies with a traditional residential program and the College of Adult and Graduate Studies, offering non-traditional programs and master’s degrees. Thousands of students have come and gone, the campus facilities have seen countless improvements, new programs have been launched and students have gone on mission trips to countries that didn't exist at the time the school was founded. What began as a one-room school with two students has today become a vibrant university. Today there are now more than 5,000 students enrolled at Colorado Christian University and more than 15,000 living alumni around the world.
