Welcome Welcome to our 2017/2018 season! The Boulder Ballet company is excited to be under way and we invite you to join us as the season unfolds. Our returning company dancers are Kelsey Byrne, Veronica Goldberg, Melissa Heslep, Phoebe Magna, Ryland Early, Matthew Helms, and apprentices Kate Adams, and Alexis Greenberger. This year we welcome new company members Carly Hambridge, Josh Nohrer, and apprentice Savannah Lee. The studios are filled with energy, music, and laughter. Please feel free to stop by the Dairy ARTS Center to watch some classes and rehearsals, and get to know Boulder Ballet up close. We performed the holiday classic The Nutcracker in November at Macky Auditorium with the Boulder Philharmonic and in December at Vance Brand Civic Auditorium with the Longmont Symphony. Our contemporary showcase 2018 Stepping Out included the powerful music of Leoš Janáček performed live by the dynamic piano duo Victoria and Dan Sabo, featuring dancers Kelsey Byrne and Matthew Helms with choreography by Ana Claire. Back by popular demand was another FANTASTIC collaboration by choreographers Amy Earnest and Lance Hardin with composer Michael Schulze. Also featured was a piece by Ryland Early, winner of the FACES of Boulder Ballet choreography contest, and a new multimedia work by choreographer Erin Tunbridge. Our spring story ballet is the beloved and haunting Giselle. The Boulder Ballet School students have been quite busy. Some of our advanced dancers had the opportunity to participate in two competitions: Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancers Competition and Youth America Grand Prix. Our new Storybook Ballet, Snow White, celebrates the joy of a favorite story brought to life in music and dance. This season, we have combined BB2 and Choreographers Showcase into one student show. BB2 is Boulder Ballet’s junior company consisting of our most advanced students. Choreographers Showcase is a platform for young aspiring choreographers to imagine and realize their artistic vision through dance. Enjoy the show and thanks for supporting live art in our community. Ana Claire Boulder Ballet Artistic Director
The origins of Boulder Ballet begin with the Ballet Arts Studio, founded by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette and British dancer Barbara Demaree, and located above Tom’s Tavern (now the restaurant Salt) at 11th and Pearl Street in downtown Boulder. The first performing company to grow out of the school, Boulder City Ballet, was founded in 1982 by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. In 1985 the company changed its name to Boulder Ballet Ensemble, and in 1995 to Boulder Ballet. Over this time, Boulder Ballet has had a number of strong influences including the versatile artistry of past artistic directors Milenko Banovich (Zagred Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), and John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre). Since 1989, Boulder Ballet has enjoyed a partnership with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra in presenting classical ballets complete with professional scenery, costumes, lighting designs, and casts of up to 100 dancers. Our rich history includes bringing classic, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to an audience that stretches from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch, in venues from the 2,000-seat opera house Macky Auditorium, to historic Boulder Theater in downtown Boulder, and to outdoor amphitheaters throughout the Denver-metro area. Artistic Director Ana Claire and Associate Artistic Director Lance Hardin continue to build on the proud tradition of artistic excellence through innovation. They have challenged their dancers and enlightened their audiences with the versatile productions from the contemporary Stepping Out to the classic The Nutcracker, to the timeless tale of Cinderella. Under their direction the company’s season continues to expand and performances now reach over 20,000 annually in the Denver Metro area. The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in a uniquely artistic and creative atmosphere. As a professional-track ballet school, BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment. BBS focuses on ballet technique because it is a beautiful art in its own right and a strong base for many other styles of dance. Under her direction since 1999 Ana Claire has successfully recruited an outstanding faculty with international performing and teaching experience. The seven-level curriculum is designed to produce well-rounded artists who achieve not only technical proficiency but also an essential expressive quality in their dancing. To achieve this, the classical ballet technique is augmented with modern dance, character dance, and physical theater. Such comprehensive training prepares students for the many artistic challenges demanded of today’s professional dancers. Our students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) where BBS students have won first-place awards and the regional Grand Prix (single highest award), and they have been invited to perform in New York City among the world’s finest young dancers. Former BBS students have gone on to dance with companies throughout the world, including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet British Columbia, Hubbard Street Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, England’s Royal Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, to name a few.

Boulder Ballet’s Commitment to Community Boulder Ballet has grown and flourished for more than thirty years on the Front Range; our roots are deep in Colorado. So, too, is our commitment to community through education and outreach programs. Our primary goal is to reach those students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience dance and movement.
IN-SCHOOL ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCE Since its inception more than a decade ago, Steps in Time remains a much-requested educational outreach program. Originally choreographed by Ana Claire, the assemblyformat program seamlessly illustrates the history of ballet and its continuing influence on all forms of dance. Through beautiful choreography, humorous narration, and powerful dancing by our professional company, Steps in Time moves students beyond stereotypes and opens their eyes to the precision, expression, and athleticism of ballet. Each year this lively, interactive education program is presented to over 4,000 students in five different Front Range counties. In particular, Boulder Ballet reaches out to a large number of Title 1 schools—often with few arts resources—and students in free/reduced lunch programs. For many of these children, it is their first exposure to ballet, and they love it.
IN-SCHOOL OUTREACH RESIDENCY PROGRAMS Boulder Ballet’s artist-in-residence program for elementary schools, Poetry of Motion, features a Boulder Ballet instructor in residence at the school for up to two weeks. This program is designed to make a long-lasting impact on the minds and hearts of the students through the integration of dance and movement into the school’s curriculum. Poetry of Motion is focused on teaching students the value of creative expression without judgment. Through the integration of dance and movement, the program inspires confidence in creative expression, joy in collaborating with others, and passion for interpretive dramatic art, all based around state standards for Physical Education. Using fun exercises and games, students explore the realm of bodies in motion and imaginative expression. The model is group-oriented and playful. The cumulative effect of immersion over a two-week period builds students’ skills and confidence. Piloted in 2015, Boulder Ballet brings a four-day in-school residency to the middle school level. The middle school program builds on past participation in the elementary program and introduces a cross-disciplinary element that directly links earth science, physical education, and arts curricula. The mission of the middle school program focuses on the 3 C’s: building community, developing students’ skills directly related to their school curriculum, and fostering creativity through dance, health, and fitness.
COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES Boulder Ballet is equally committed to the successful community outreach programs Nutcracker Preview Night and Ballet in the Park. Since 2005, we have reached over 16,000 underserved individuals who are frequently excluded from exposure to the performing arts. These two programs were specifically designed to remove the financial barrier to participation. For our Nutcracker Preview Night performance, Boulder Ballet works with key social-service organizations to distribute free tickets to the full-scale final dress rehearsal of The Nutcracker in collaboration with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. Our free, outdoor summer concert series Ballet in the Park also reaches out to lowincome families, teens in crisis, struggling single parents, and seniors on fixed incomes as well as the community at large in an effort to make the arts accessible to all.

ANA CLAIRE (Boulder Ballet Artistic Director) Although born in Boulder, Ana grew up on a ranch near Fairplay, Colorado. At the age of eight she saw American Ballet Theatre perform Swan Lake and fell in love with the art of ballet. In an extraordinary gift of support, Ana’s mother drove her to ballet classes in Denver throughout her childhood. Ana has studied ballet with Maxine Williamson, Fernando Schaffenberg, Milenko Banovich, Barbara Demaree, and Larry Boyette. She has performed with Fort Worth Ballet, Fort Worth Opera, David Taylor Dance Theater, Aladdin Theater, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, Jan Justis Dance Company, and 3rd Law Dance/Theater, among others. Ana was a principal ballerina with Boulder Ballet for many years, and was twice voted “Boulder’s Best” by the Daily Camera. For over 20 years she has produced, directed, and choreographed an annual Storybook Ballet for the Boulder Ballet School, each with original music, scenery, and costumes created in collaboration with local artists. She has also choreographed all productions of Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker since 2001. Ana originated Boulder Ballet’s acclaimed outreach program Steps in Time which has been performed at numerous schools throughout the Boulder/Denver area. Ana studied dance pedagogy at Texas Christian University, attended the teacher training workshop with former New York City Ballet principal Jillana, and has over 27 years of teaching experience. She is a passionate teacher, dedicated to helping students achieve technical excellence while nurturing their individual artistry, and many of her students have gone on to professional careers in dance. RYLAND EARLY A native of Boulder, Ryland Early has danced for Ballet West, Ballet Arizona, Nevada Ballet Theater, and most recently for Phoenix Ballet under the direction of Slawomir Wozniak. He has enjoyed performing the works of Stanton Welch, George Balanchine, Amy Seiwert, and Robert Dekkers throughout his career, as well as dancing classical roles such as Albrecht in Gisele, Von Rothbart in Swan Lake, and the Prince in Sleeping Beauty. This is Ryland’s second season with Boulder Ballet.

AMY EARNEST (Assistant School Director) Amy began dancing at the age of three in Atlanta, GA. Amy received her training with the School of Atlanta Ballet under the direction of Tom Pazik, School of American Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. As a professional dancer she performed with Hartford Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Tulsa Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. She performed principal roles in George Balanchine’s; Four Temperaments, Prodigal Son, Apollo, Western Symphony, and Who Cares; William Forsythe’s In The Middle Somewhat Elevated; Alonzo King’s Map and Dreamer; Nacho Duato’s Arenal; Kirk Peterson’s Amazed in Burning Dreams, Firebird, Nutcracker; and Paul Taylor’s Esplanade. She also was a finalist in the prestigious New York Ballet Competition of 1996 and was a member of the Chautauqua Ballet from 1998 to 2000. Ms. Earnest has been teaching and coaching students for the last fifteen years and is certified with the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum in Primary through Level 3. Amy owned and directed Avant-Garde School of Dance along with her husband Lance Hardin, where they choreographed and produced numerous performances including an annual Nutcracker. Amy has trained and coached students that have continued their training with prestigious schools including American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Houston Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet School. Amy is also a certified Pilates instructor receiving her certification through D.K. Body Balancing accredited by the University of Nevada Las Vegas and approved by the Nevada and Arizona State Boards of Physical Therapists. Amy also enjoyed her role as company teacher with Dawson Wallace Dance (formerly David Taylor Dance Theatre), from 2008-2012, along with a variety of requests as guest instructor. Before coming to Boulder Amy and her husband Lance Hardin served as Co-Dance Directors at The Myles Reif Performing Arts Center in Grand Rapids, MN. LANCE HARDIN (Boulder Ballet Associate Artistic Director) Lance is a native of Chicago, IL, where he received his training from Larry Long at the Ruth Page Foundation School of Dance. He holds a B.S. in Ballet from Indiana University, where he studied under the direction of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, Patricia McBride, Jacques Cesbron, and Violette Verdy. As a professional dancer, Mr. Hardin danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, North Carolina Dance Theatre (currently Charlotte Ballet), Chautauqua Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Boulder Ballet, Springfield Ballet Company, and the Yoko Kasai Ballet Studio in Japan. He has performed principal roles in works by world-renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine (Allegro Brilliante, Four Temperaments, Western Symphony and Who Cares), Paul Taylor (Esplanade

Mr. Hardin has taught dance for the past 23 years and holds numerous choreographic credits including Boulder Ballet’s Social Dances and Versus, James Sewell’s BalletWorks Project Fractured (a collaboration with his wife Amy Earnest), The Denver Independent Choreographer’s Project, and Springfield Ballet Company. Versus was reviewed as “…the ultimate example of a clean, contemporary ballet” (Denver Dance Examiner). Prior to joining Boulder Ballet, Mr. Hardin served as Co-Dance Director at The Myles Reif Performing Arts Center in Grand Rapids, MN. ERIN TUNBRIDGE Erin Tunbridge was born and grew up in Australia and has been working in dance choreography, teaching, and arts management since 2008. Erin established and directed Zeta Dance Group, a project-based dance company in Australia, for six years during which she choreographed and self-produced full length works. She recently coordinated an international tour with the Australian dancers of Zeta Dance Group, touring the work in New York and Washington, DC, in 2014. Erin studied at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia, where she received a Bachelor of Creative Industries in Dance (2009); Bachelor of Education, Secondary (2009); Graduate Certificate in Creative Industries (2010), and Master of Creative Industries in Arts Management and Production (2012). Since 2006, she has taught dance for early childhood, elementary, middle, and high schools; private dance studios; colleges and universities (including Montgomery College, MD, and George Mason University, VA); and adult community classes (including Dance Place, DC). Until 2012, Erin worked as the studio manager/programs officer at Ausdance Queensland, a national advocacy and support body for dance in Australia. Erin worked as the Programs Coordinator for ClancyWorks Dance Company (MD) from 2012–2015 and was responsible for marketing endeavors and coordinating their educational programs. Erin joined Boulder Ballet in 2015 and continues as Marketing Manager and Outreach Director, delivering educational programs to elementary and middle schools in Colorado. Erin is also Director of T2 Dance Project (www.t2dance.com).

COMPANY DANCERS KELSEY BYRNE is from Orange County, California, where she received her training at the Orange County High School of the Arts in Santa Ana as a member of the Classical and Contemporary Dance Department. She also received training during summer intensives at the Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, and Alonzo King’s LINES. She recently graduated from the Ballet Department in Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. At IU, she had the opportunity to perform a variety of Balanchine works including The Four Temperaments, Western Symphony, Emeralds, and Swan Lake, as well as classics such as La Bayadere and Michael Vernon’s adaptation of The Nutcracker. This is Kelsey’s third season with Boulder Ballet. RYLAND EARLY is a native of Boulder and has danced for Ballet West, Ballet Arizona, Nevada Ballet Theater, and most recently Phoenix Ballet under the direction of Slawomir Wozniak. Veronica continued her training at Point Park University, where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance as well as a minor in Psychology. There, she had the opportunity to perform in George Balanchine’s Serenade, Ben Stevenson’s End of Time, and Nicolas Petrov’s Romeo and Juliet as Juliet. After graduating, she went on to work with City Ballet of San Diego for two seasons under the direction of Steven and Betsey Wistrich. During her time in San Diego, Veronica had the opportunity to perform in Mozart’s Requiem, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and George Balanchine’s Emeralds, The Four Temperaments, and Walpurgisnacht. This is Veronica’s second season with Boulder Ballet. CARLY HAMBRIDGE, originally from Charlotte, NC, joins for her first season. This past summer, she danced as an apprentice with Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance following the 2016-2017 season as an artist with BalletMet’s second company. Previously, she danced with Nevada Ballet Theatre as a trainee and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre in the graduate program under scholarship. Carly graduated from Butler University in 2014 and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Pedagogy with departmental honors. She attended summer intensive programs at Ballet West, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and the Rock School. Her favorite roles include Third Movement Soloist in Lew Christensen’s Sinfonia, Dew Drop Fairy in Butler Ballet’s Nutcracker, and corps de ballet roles in La Bayadere, Serenade, Who Cares?, and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue. Outside of the studio, Carly is a passionate vegan, DIY-er, and yogi. This is Carly’s first season with Boulder Ballet. MATTHEW HELMS began his training in Colorado on full scholarship at the Academy of Classical Ballet, where he danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle and Le Corsaire. He then studied on full scholarship with Mark and Sandra Carlson and German Zamuel at the International Ballet School where he performed soloist roles in The Nutcracker and Peter Pan. Matthew competed in the 2008 Youth America Grand Prix and the 2008 Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancer’s competition where he received a full scholarship to the

Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City. Matthew has been a guest artist with ballet companies in Utah, California, and Idaho, and for the last three years has performed leading roles in ballets such as The Nutcracker, Paquita, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and Le Corsaire. He choreographed a contemporary ballet that was premiered in the Ballet West Academy Spring show in 2009. Matthew was promoted to the Ballet West Pre-Professional Trainee Program in 2010 and has trained with artists from American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Joffrey Ballet, RirieWoodbury Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Kirov Ballet, and David Taylor Dance Theater. Matthew has studied martial arts since age three, been acting since age four, and has appeared in movies, commercials and TV shows as an actor or a fight choreographer. This is Matthew’s seventh season with Boulder Ballet. This year, Matthew is generously sponsored by Lloyd Botway. MELISSA HESLEP received her training at the School of Orlando City Ballet for 13 years under the direction of Beatrix Aldana and spent her summers training with teachers including Luba Gulyaeva, Mark Spivak, Valeria Sinyavakaya, and Veronica Aldana. She performed with the student company until 2001, and upon graduation, was accepted into the 2002 Youth America Grand Prix finals in New York City. In Orlando, she performed with Russian Ballet under the direction of Vadim Fedotov and spent five seasons with Central Florida Ballet under the direction of Vasile Petrutiu. She has also had the opportunity to travel as a guest artist for many venues in the United States. Her repertoire includes classics such as The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and The Nutcracker, and many contemporary works. This is Melissa’s seventh season with Boulder Ballet. PHOEBE MAGNA was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She began her training with The Hartt School Dance Department, formerly the School of the Hartford Ballet, under the direction of Susan Brooker and Miguel Campaneria. In 2010, she continued her studies at the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts under Victoria Mazzarelli, Kirk Peterson, Eleanor D’Antuono, and Tim Melady. After graduation in 2013, Phoebe joined the Colorado Ballet Studio Company for two seasons where she performed in their productions of Giselle, Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, Christopher Wheeldon’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Michael Pink’s Dracula, and Colorado Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Phoebe was invited to join City Ballet of San Diego for their 2015/2016 season where she had the opportunity to perform in Mozart’s Requiem, The Nutcracker, George Balanchine’s Emeralds, and Romeo and Juliet. This is Phoebe’s second season with Boulder Ballet. JOSH NOHRER was born in Mississippi. He started dancing at the age of seven with jazz and hip hop, then with ballet around the age of 12 and became a serious dancer at age 15 after moving to Florida. Josh trained at Next Generation Ballet in Tampa and America’s Ballet School. He competed in the Youth American Grand Prix and reached the Finals in New York in 2015 and the Top 6 Men Classical in 2016. He has had the honor of training with many directors and teachers including Adam Sklute, Peter Stark, Osmany Montano, Paula Nunez, Bruce Marks, Jeremy Blanton, Paul Vasterling, and Devon Carney. At the age of 18 Josh became the youngest company member of Fort Wayne Ballet. He has performed many major ballets including Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, La Bayadere, Le Corsaire, Coppélia, Don Quixote, Flames of Paris, Confetti and Birthday Celebration by Gerald Arpino, and Spartacus. This is Josh’s first season with Boulder Ballet.

COLLABORATORS VICTORIA & DAN SABO have had very active careers as soloists and chamber musicians. After nearly twenty years of teaching at Minneapolis’ MacPhail Center for Music, they moved to Bellingham, Washington, where Victoria was founder and Artistic Director of Bellingham House Concerts, now in its eleventh season, and was recipient of a Mayor’s Arts Council Award in 2017. Dan and Victoria met at the University of Colorado. They soon commenced a career as duo-pianists, performing around the United States, even while pursuing graduate studies, which culminated in four years of study in Paris and Brussels. As duo-pianists, Dan and Victoria frequently performed Olivier Messiaen’s massive Visions de l’Amen. This led to a period of study with Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen, legendary pianist and wife of the composer, studies financed by Fulbright and Rotary Scholarships. Frequent performers in Europe, the Sabos also studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Brussels, where they were awarded the Higher Diploma, in Chamber Music, with great Distinction. As a chamber musician, Dan has performed with members of the Seattle Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, and Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra. Among highlights of the Sabos’ concerto appearances were a double-billing with the Whatcom Symphony, performing Poulenc’s 2-Piano Concerto (which they performed three years ago with Boulder Ballet) and Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. Victoria has also had a substantial career as a composer, with numerous piano compositions included in Willis’ Pianovations Series. Her choral works have been issued by publishers such as Boosey and Hawkes (Wind on the Hill has sold over 500,000 copies, worldwide), she has been commissioned to write several ballets, and she was the Washington State Music Teachers Association 2009 Composer of the Year. The Sabos have recorded a CD of Czech piano duets. Dan has also recorded two CDs, one of Scriabin’s Preludes and the other of music of Chopin’s student, Joseph Schiffmacher. Victoria and Dan are avid outdoors-persons, including having summited all of Colorado’s 14,000-foot mountains. Dan and Victoria Sabo will be performing a two piano concert “Minimalism to the MAX!” on Wednesday, February 21 at 7:00pm at the Boulder Piano Gallery located at 3111 Walnut St. CDs of Victoria and Dan Sabo performing Dvořák and Janaček’s music are available in the lobby following the show. CDs are $10 each or 3 for $20. Please find Victoria or Dan to purchase. MICHAEL SCHULZE is a composer, music producer, audio engineer, video producer, singer, and musician. He initiated and directs the award-winning audio production baccalaureate program at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, where he holds the rank of Teaching Associate Professor. Before coming to Denver he was a lecturer and also Director of Audio Services at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. Mr. Schulze holds a Bachelor of Music degree from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied in the world renowned Experimental Music Studios. He appears as producer and engineer on recordings released by labels such as Chandos, JVC (Victor Japan), and Harmonia Mundi, by artists including Kartik Seshadri, the St. Petersburg String Quartet, Kaori Fujii, John Luther Adams, and eighth blackbird. Mr. Schulze has served as a consultant to research scientists at AT&T (Bell Labs) in Florham Park, NJ, where he was involved in testing and implementation of the AAC (advanced audio codec) audio coding system. Storybook Ballet – Snow White Each year Boulder Ballet brings a familiar tale to life through the beautiful art of dance in Storybook Ballet. This production features original choreography by Amy Earnest and features students of the Boulder Ballet School, ages 8 and up. Storybook 2018 features Snow White, based on the German fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. It tells the classic story of the princess and her stepmother, the evil queen, who is envious of Snow White’s beauty. This production will also feature the well-known cast of characters including the seven dwarfs, the huntsman, and the handsome prince, as well as the magic mirror and poisoned apple. That may sound like an exaggeration, but I honestly have not encountered another ballet school that can so successfully train professionals while including students that may not have professional aspirations.” –Ben Goodman The origins of Boulder Ballet begin with the Ballet Arts Studio, founded by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette and British dancer Barbara Demaree, and located above Tom’s Tavern (now the restaurant Salt) at 11th and Pearl Street in downtown Boulder. The first performing company to grow out of the school, Boulder City Ballet, was founded in 1982 by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. In 1985 the company changed its name to Boulder Ballet Ensemble and in 1995 to Boulder Ballet.
The Director of BBS since 1999, Ana Claire has successfully recruited an outstanding faculty with international performing and teaching experience. The seven-level curriculum is designed to produce well-rounded artists who achieve not only technical proficiency but also an essential expressive quality in their dancing. To achieve this, the classical ballet technique is augmented with modern dance, character dance, and physical theater. Such comprehensive training prepares students for the many artistic challenges demanded of professional dancers. Our students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the world’s largest, the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), where BBS students have won first-place awards and the regional Grand Prix (single highest award), and have been invited to perform in New York City among the world’s finest young dancers. Former BBS students have gone on to dance with world-class companies throughout the world including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet British Columbia, Hubbard Street Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, England’s Royal Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, to name a few. Boulder Ballet classes are held in our three spacious studios at the Dairy ARTS Center in central Boulder.
