Welcome! One of life’s greatest pleasures is the process of discovery. Being truly open to new experiences fosters a sense of adventure about the everyday. The open space that we so cherish in Boulder is about more than physical surroundings. It extends to open minds and open hearts—qualities broadly shared within our community. The Boulder Phil’s 2018-19 season embraces a sense of expansiveness that will take you on a journey of artistic discovery and spiritual renewal. Our expanded season includes well-loved masterpieces, brilliant music of our time, innovative concert enhancements, family favorites and a new Special Events Series that offers something for everyone. Earlier this season, we welcomed superstar violinist Midori in partnership with our friends at the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras for an immersive residency focused on arts education advocacy. We also marked the 100th anniversary of Holst’s groundbreaking The Planets and celebrated our community’s aerospace ties with NASA images, music about astronomers from James Stephenson, and a partnership with Fiske Planetarium. In the new year, we’ll explore Mahler’s Fourth, Prokofiev’s Fifth, and music of Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Elgar. We are thrilled to welcome international stars Garrick Ohlsson, Mary Wilson, and Astrid Schween to the Macky stage, along with Boulder native Kristin Kuster, whose Dune Acres was made possible in part by the Phil’s commissioning partnership. And we will close our season with Dvořák’s beloved New World Symphony paired with a stunning blend of music and theater in Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America, featuring actors and projected images. After sharing the music of incomparable film composer John Williams in the fall, our Special Events Series continues to make connections to ever wider segments of our community through evenings devoted to the animation magic of Pixar Studios and the life and legacy of the great David Bowie. And this spring, we will welcome thousands more students to Macky for our annual Discovery Concerts.

Whether it’s the openness of the central Asian steppes, the vast emptiness of outer space, or the open-ended opportunities sought by immigrants in a new land, our season offers thought-provoking takes on what it means to be “open.” The concept is even woven into our institutional DNA―the core of our mission is to open the experience of live orchestral music to more and more people in ever more diverse and impactful ways. We invite you to join us on a journey of discovery this season!

To Our Supporters Dear Boulder residents and visitors— What a treat we are in for! Not only is our city blessed to have an unparalleled professional orchestra in the Boulder Philharmonic, but their 2018-19 season promises to be one of their most memorable. When your spirit needs uplifting, what two things leap to mind? Soaring music and enjoying the great outdoors, two elements that the Boulder Philharmonic deftly combines in an entire season dedicated to the concept of Open Space. While Bouldercentric nature and music programming are included in every season, this year is a culmination of an incredible partnership with Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks department – a highlight of which has been five years of guided musical hikes led by naturalist Dave Sutherland. Another major theme is the Philharmonic’s commitment to community engagement: the orchestra strives to make live music relevant and accessible for all. This intention is reflected in their Discovery Concerts, a partnership with Boulder Valley Schools, which inspire over 5,000 young students each year. Also, in the five-day immersive residency of internationallyknown violinist and educator Midori in November—a cultural milestone for Boulder—who engaged with a wide spectrum of the community and perform with the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras. At 60 years old, the Boulder Philharmonic is just getting started —with dynamic performances every season that give life to our community’s values, creativity, and sense of place. Enjoy! Suzanne Jones, Mayor Aaron Brockett, Mayor Pro Tem for the entire City Council

The Dream of America

Biographies

PETER BOYER, composer Ellis Island: The Dream of America

Rhode Island-born composer Peter Boyer has become established as an important composer at a very young age. After receiving his DMA degree in 1995 at the age of 25, from Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, he went to New York City to study with John Corigliano. Even before, the name of Peter Boyer was known in New England musical circles, having been awarded a special proclamation of recognition from the Governor of Rhode Island for his Requiem. More recently, his tone poem, Titanic, composed before James Cameron’s film, won the BMI Award and the First Music Carnegie Hall commission. Film composition has always been of interest to Boyer, who continued his education after his New York studies by completing the Film & Television Scoring Program at the USC School of Music in Los Angeles. In 1999 he formally entered the faculty of the Claremont Graduate University where he had served as Visiting Professor of Music since 1996. In 2002 the Hartford Symphony premiered Boyer’s Ellis Island; the Dream of America for projected images, actors, actress, and orchestra. BUD COLEMAN holds the Roe Green Endowed Chair in Theatre, and is the former department chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance. Currently the director of the CU in D.C. Internship Program, Coleman is a professional stage director, having directed and choreographed dozens of musicals, including “Fiddler on the Roof” in Thailand (Mahidol University), and Sondheim’s “Company” in Vladivostok, Russia, under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. Additionally, he was a 2009-10 Fulbright Lecturer in Tokyo. Formerly a professional dancer with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Fort Worth Ballet, Kinesis, and Ballet Austin, Bud now enjoys writing about performance. With co-editor Judith Sebesta, they published “Women in American Musical Theatre,” and Coleman and Pamyla Stiehl co-authored the textbook, “Back Stage Pass: A Survey of American Musical Theatre.”

BRYCE J. BARTU is originally from Grand Island, Nebraska. Comfortable in both opera and musical theater roles, Bartu has previously been seen as Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods (CU Boulder Theater), Aldolfo Pirelli in Sweeney Todd, First Armored Man in Die Zauberflöte, Danilo in The Merry Widow (Eklund Opera), George in The Drowsy Chaperone (The STAGE Theater), Pat in 42nd Street (Pinewood Bowl Festival), Enoch in Carousel (Asheville Lyric Opera), Jim Casey in the Chicago premiere of The Grapes of Wrath, Alfredo in Die Fledermaus (Northwestern Opera Theater), and Anthony in Sweeney Todd (Aspen Opera Festival). RUBY DIAZ is a BA theatre performance major and dance minor at the University of Colorado Boulder. A few of her acting credits include Pirates of Penzance, The Bad Seed, The Producers, Water by The Spoonful, Dog Sees Dog, and Anatomy of Gray. Ruby ultimately would like to pursue Theatre Education and provide comprehensive theatre and dance education to low-income and minority youth in inner city areas where these art forms are scarcely offered. BENNET FORSYTH is a sophomore BFA Acting student at the University of Colorado Boulder. Bennet stumbled upon theater two years ago and it has been his passion ever since. Some of his favorite credits for roles that he has played are Margaret Mead in Hair, Doctor Rock in Next to Normal, and Piragua in In the Heights. ERIKA HAASE is an undergraduate student at the University of Colorado Boulder studying sociology with minors in leadership and theatre. She recently portrayed Bradley in the regional premier of Men on Boats with The Catamounts, Gary Coleman in Avenue Q with CenterStage and Dee Graham in the world premiere of We Are The Wake with CU Theatre and Dance. MATARA HITCHCOCK is an MA/MBA student in theatre and performance studies at the University of Colorado-Boulder. She recently debuted the role of Lady Katherine in Scott Kaiser’s Falstaff in Love, played Estelle in No Exit at the Boulder Fringe Festival, and Miss Havisham in Great Expectations at CU Boulder. As a McDermott Scholar,

she received her BA in Emerging Media and Communication from the University of Texas at Dallas, with a focus in videography and a Performing Arts minor.

BRENDAN LYNCH is currently studying Musical Theatre and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. He has appeared as the Baker in Into the Woods, Gabe in Next to Normal and Tobias in Sweeney Todd. Brendan has most recently been studying voice with Andrew Garland. K. WOODZICK is an actor, director, producer and Ph.D. Student in theatre and performance studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. They hold an MFA in Contemporary Performance from Naropa University. This past fall, they performed in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Off-Center production of Bite-Size: An Evening of MicroTheatre as the Veterinary Assistant and the bear.

Program Notes ANTONIN DVOŘÁK: Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, “From the New World”

Antonin Dvořák had a strong affinity for the music of common people. He collected and studied folk music, but, paradoxically, seldom incorporated authentic indigenous music into his works. Drawn to the simple beauty of African-American spirituals and NativeAmerican songs, Dvořák boldly suggested that American composers needed to cultivate a national identity in their music. Dvořák’s suggestion came on the heels of his 1892 appointment as director of the American Conservatory of Music in New York. He would spend the next summer in the small Czech community of Spillville, Iowa, where he would complete his “American” string quartet and quintet. After only a few months in this country and before his summer trip, he began an experiment – a symphony blending stylized folk elements of his native Czech land with those of his temporary American home. In the December 15, 1893, edition of the New York Herald – the day before the premiere of the symphony – Dvořák published an essay on national identity in music. He stated that

American composers should be aware of all indigenous music. The composer had heard many spirituals from his student Harry T. Burleigh and found them to be beautifully expressive. Native-American melodies were familiar to him from transcriptions and a visit to Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in New York. In the essay, Dvořák wrote of the similarity of the melodies of both cultures and suggested that there must be some way to incorporate such truly American music in new compositions. [In the following decade, a small musical ripple arose from the “Indianist” composers, led by Arthur Farwell, who adopted Dvořák’s technique of creating stylized exotic melodies as well as transcribing many authentic Native American songs.] Dvořák’s own Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” incorporates some of these elements but retains a Czech identity throughout. It seems somewhat like a postcard to his fellow Czech citizens from an extended vacation in America – there is an American flavor at times but the result is purely Czech. As for quotations of American music in the symphony, there are none. The first movement opens with a tender descending melody supported by meditative chords, almost like a benediction before a long journey. Agitated and strong, the main section of this movement begins with an assertive horn figure that becomes the germ of the movement. Many have pointed to the second theme of the first movement as resembling “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” but it stops there as merely a resemblance. For the second movement, Dvořák once again begins with a slow, almost prayerful, introduction. The main theme of the Largo movement, often called “Going Home,” is reminiscent of a spiritual but is not an original African-American melody. In short, Dvořák’s melodic materials offer mere indications of American-ness, but are the inspired work of a master composer in taking new melodic contours and assimilating them to his needs. The middle section of this movement is a quietly turbulent song with a decidedly Czech flavor. The scherzo, Molto vivace, is a dazzling orchestral tour-de-force. The undulating and bustling texture infuses this music with a sense of propulsion that is very direct in its approach. A central section includes a lighter Czech dance.

Program 4 Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra 2018-2019

The Dream of America

Dvořák’s finale opens with a forceful and virile horn theme. A second theme, driven by triplets, gives way to a languid clarinet solo. The development section introduces new material and builds dramatic tension. In the final measures, Dvořák returns to a brassy restatement of the finale’s opening music, which brings the symphony to a triumphant conclusion. ©2019 Orpheus Music Prose & Craig Doolin www.orpheusnotes.com

Ellis Island: The Dream of America Ellis Island: The Dream of America was born out of my fascination with the relationship between history and music. I’m drawn to good stories—especially stories which come from the past but are relevant to the present—and as an orchestral composer, I’m intrigued by the potential of the orchestra as a storytelling medium. Of course, orchestral music cannot tell stories in a literal way, but its ability to suggest scenes and emotions, and evoke responses in listeners, has challenged and stimulated composers for centuries. My fascination with the story of the Titanic led me to choose that as the subject of an early orchestral work, and considering the plight of that vessel’s third-class passengers—humble European immigrants bound for America— led me to think more broadly about early twentieth-century American immigration. America is a nation of immigrants, and our immigrant history is a profound part of our American mythology. In the history of American immigration, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are icons of immense significance. In the years of its operation, from 1892 to 1954, more than twelve million immigrants, over 70% of all immigrants to the United States, passed through Ellis Island, the processing station which was “the gateway to America.” Today, more than 40% of the U.S. population, over 100 million Americans, can trace their roots to an ancestor who came through Ellis Island. The stories of Ellis Island immigrants are in many ways our family stories: whether they are the tales of our grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, or friends, so many Americans can relate to these experiences as part of our collective history. This is what makes Ellis

Island stories so fascinating, and it’s what drew me to this material as the basis of a major composition. Ultimately I settled on a structure which includes seven stories, four female and three male, of immigrants who came through Ellis Island from seven countries, between 1910 and 1940. For the final text in the work, I knew from the beginning that I could not create a work about Ellis Island without making reference to the poem by Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus, which is inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty. This poem is synonymous with the Statue, Ellis Island, and American immigration in the minds of many Americans. A number of immigrants interviewed for the project made reference to the poem, and the words of Katherine Beychok provided a natural bridge to a recitation of the poem, which serves as the work’s epilogue. In live performances of Ellis Island: The Dream of America, there is a visual component which accompanies the music during the Prologue and Epilogue. This consists of images from the archive of historic photographs housed at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum Library. Many of these come from the collection of Augustus Sherman, a longtime Ellis Island employee who took a number of poignant and historically important photographs of immigrants. These immigrants’ faces seem to tell their own stories, and it is little wonder that copies of many of these photographs are displayed prominently in the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The stories of Ellis Island are stories of journeys. My personal journey with this project, from its conception in 1999, to its premiere in 2002, its recording in 2003, its release by Naxos in 2005, followed by its Grammy nomination, and its more than 100 performances to date, has been both a long and rewarding one. I hope that listeners may find these stories as fascinating, illuminating and inspiring as I do. – Peter Boyer

TONY VINCENT, vocals

Tony Vincent grew up in Albuquerque, NM, where from a young age he was exposed to the music of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. In his early teens Vincent began writing songs heavily influenced by Depeche Mode, New Order and Tears for Fears. While attending university (Nashville, TN), Vincent started a makeshift record company out of his dorm room and recorded a five-song EP, which led to a recording contract with EMI records. The two solo albums (Tony Vincent, One Deed) followed producing six #1 Billboard radio singles. Shortly after moving to NYC in 1997 to continue his recording career, Vincent took an unexpected detour into the world of rock-based theater, joining the cast of RENT, initially as part of the first national tour, then making his Broadway debut in the New York production in 1999. He was featured as Simon Zealotes in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s remake of the film Jesus Christ Superstar (2000), and when the production was revived on Broadway that same year Vincent earned critical acclaim starring as Judas Iscariot. Vincent is best known for his appearance on the second season of NBC’s reality singing competition, The Voice. While on the show, Vincent was selected to be on “Team Cee Lo,” and made a lasting impression on fans worldwide with his final performance of The Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.” Tony Vincent continues to write and produce for future projects, both as a solo artist, as a producer for other artists and under the band moniker Mercer.
