As one of Colorado’s premier ensembles, the Boulder Phil is a critically acclaimed professional orchestra serving Boulder and the greater metroDenver region. Known for innovative concert programming presented at the highest artistic level and a growing commitment to authentic community engagement, the Boulder Phil continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be Boulder’s orchestra. We are defined by the artistry of our talented musicians, the support of our extraordinary patrons, and ongoing creative collaborations with partner organizations encompassing the arts, sciences, nature, youth, and social services. “Thank you for pricing seats for kids to make it easier for families to have access and for hosting high quality events like this!”

About Boulder Ballet

Since our founding in 1982, Boulder Ballet has grown to become a regional ballet company with a reputation for staging engaging as well as popular ballets. Over the years we have performed such classics as The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and The Sleeping Beauty on a variety of stages in Boulder and beyond. Equally adept at presenting contemporary works, Boulder Ballet is thrilled this year to bring the choreography of dance icons Paul Taylor and Christopher Wheeldon to Boulder.

“…Boulder Ballet always has a unique theatrical performance just waiting for you to experience.” (Boulder Weekly)

Under the direction of Artistic Director Ana Claire and Associate Artistic Director Lance Hardin, the company’s season continues to expand and performances now reach over 21,000 annually in the Denver Metro area, from Boulder to Highlands Ranch. The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in an atmosphere of creative excellence. As a professional-track ballet school, BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment. Our students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancers Competition and Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). Boulder Ballet is extremely proud of graduates currently performing with American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Boulder Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Leipzig Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet II, The Royal Ballet (London), and Sacramento Ballet among others.

Boulder Ballet Community Engagement Boulder Ballet has a strong commitment to community through our education and outreach programs. Our primary goal is to reach those who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience dance. Our Outreach programming is focused in three areas: • Title 1 elementary and middle schools. We take three programs to these schools, • The assembly program Steps in Time which reviews the history of ballet and its continuing influence on all forms of dance. • Our artist-in-residence program for elementary schools, Poetry of Motion, integrates of dance and movement. The program inspires confidence in creative expression, joy in collaborating with others, and passion for interpretive dramatic art. • The Science of Dance is our middle school program which introduces a cross-disciplinary element that directly links earth science, physical education, and arts curricula. The mission is to foster creativity through dance, health and fitness. • Boulder Ballet is equally committed to the successful community outreach programs Nutcracker Preview Night and Ballet in the Park. These two programs were specifically designed to remove the financial barrier to participation. Since 2005, we have reached over 20,000 underserved individuals between the free tickets to the fullscale final dress rehearsal of The Nutcracker and our free, outdoor summer concert series, Ballet in the Park. • Our latest outreach initiative is the Adaptive Dance program, designed specifically for those with different abilities. Working with two physicians from Children’s Hospital Colorado, the program launched in early 2019 with ten students with conditions including autism, cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome. This program is now in its third session with waiting lists for future classes.

OUR NUTCRACKER STORY ACT ONE It’s Christmas Eve and a young girl, Clara, is put to bed by her parents. Quickly asleep, she dreams she is at a festive holiday party surrounded by family and friends. Clara’s uncle, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, arrives and entertains the children with magic tricks, juggling, and life-size dancing dolls. He gives Clara a Nutcracker doll that she adores, but her brother Fritz is envious and steals it, tripping and breaking it. Drosselmeyer quickly mends it with his magic handkerchief. Midnight strikes and strange things begin to happen. Human-sized mice dart through the shadows, the Christmas tree grows to astounding heights, and huge rats appear led by the fearsome Rat King. Then toy soldiers and the Nutcracker (now life-size) march in to protect Clara and engage the rats in a fierce battle. When the Rat King knocks the Nutcracker to the floor, Clara takes her shoe and strikes a fatal blow to the Rat King’s head. The battle over, Clara finds herself in a snow-covered forest and discovers that she has become a young woman. Then she sees that the Nutcracker, recovering from the battle, is now a handsome prince. They embark together on a journey through the forest with dancing snowflakes and frost.

ACT TWO Continuing to dream, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince are led by Drosselmeyer through the realm of angels, who escort them to the Land of Sweets. They are welcomed by dignitaries and are presented to the Sugar Plum Fairy. She asks how her visitors won admission to her land, and the Prince reenacts the battle with the Rat King including Clara’s heroic rescue. The people of the Land of Sweets rejoice over the victory and award Clara a crown and the key to their kingdom. The Sugar Plum Fairy delights Clara and her Prince with a tour of the Land of Sweets. Dancers from Spain, Arabia, China, and Russia entertain the visitors. The Marzipans dance to the music of reed flutes. Then a larger-than-life Mother Winter, her little penguins, and the Sugar Plum Fairy herself perform for the guests. Finally, the Dew Drop Fairy and her flower garden dance in the Waltz of the Flowers. Then, Clara awakens and is once more a little girl. With Drosselmeyer still on her mind, she wonders whether it was all a dream…or is it a dream yet to come?

CHRISTMAS WITH THE PHIL Program Notes Arcangelo Corelli, (Christmas Concerto) Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was the first composer to have such success writing purely instrumental music rather than vocal music. In the last two decades of his life, Corelli wrote twelve concerti grossi, among them is the Concerto Grosso in G minor, Op. 6, No. 8, more commonly known as the “Christmas Concerto.” The piece uses the Italian concerto grosso style in which a large group alternates with a smaller group, in this case consisting of two violins and a cello. This concerto particularly captures the Christmas spirit because of the included inscription Fatto per la notte di Natale (“Made for the night of Christmas”) as well as the last movement, marked “Pastorale,” a term referring to the shepherds who gathered around the manger.

Ralph Vaughan Williams, Fantasia on “Greensleeves” Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) adapted many folk songs and English hymns, including the popular folk tune Greensleeves. Vaughan Williams originally wrote this piece for his opera Sir John in Love, which is based on Shakespeare’s comedic play The Merry Wives of Windsor. Everyone knows the beautiful lyrics of this ancient melody and Christmas hymn, What child is this?, and Vaughan Williams offers an instrumental version that maintains the melody and adds a haunting beauty.

Antonio Vivaldi, Autumn and Winter from The Four Seasons, op. 8 Autumn opens with the songs and dances of peasants as they celebrate the harvest. “Fired up by Bacchus’ liquor” the solo violin breaks from the village dance and ranges virtuosically between its high and low registers. The first violin is still in control of itself, if a bit boorish, but Vivaldi specifically marks the string accompaniment to be played “drunk”. The solo violinist finally succumbs to Bacchus, though interpretations differ in their portrayal of inebriation. The peasants end their revelry in sleep. Winter opens with relentless icy daggers that engulf the string orchestra. The solo violin breaks in with the “harsh breath of a horrid wind,” though the effect again depends upon the performance. The first violins try to keep warm with fast, running notes and wide leaps depicting stamping feet. But winter isn’t all icy winds; there is also the cozy feeling of sitting by the fire with the rain dripping outside. Vivaldi has the violins pluck the strings to imitate the sound of raindrops while the solo violin plays a pleasant, contented tune.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE PHIL Program Notes GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL: Messiah The oratorios of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), a contemporary of J.S. Bach and one of the most famous Baroque composers, differed from the previous Italian oratorios in that he gave the chorus much more prominence. Charles Jennens wrote the scriptural English text in this oratorio which is a long reflection of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. The complete work contains three parts. The Christmas portion of the work consists of pieces from Part I in which the Old Testament prophets predict the coming of the Messiah. The concert ends with the well known Hallelujah Chorus which is full of celebration and perfectly captures the Christmas spirit!

Hallelujah Chorus: Text Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The kingdom of this world Is become the kingdom of our Lord, And of His Christ, and of His Christ; And He shall reign for ever and ever, For ever and ever, forever and ever, King of kings, and Lord of lords, King of kings, and Lord of lords, And Lord of lords, And He shall reign, And He shall reign forever and ever, King of kings, forever and ever, And Lord of lords, Hallelujah! Hallelujah! And He shall reign forever and ever, King of kings! and Lord of lords! And He shall reign forever and ever, King of kings! and Lord of lords! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
