May - August 2018 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD 5

In June, years of community visioning and planning by hundreds of individuals will come to fruition with the opening of the 40 West ArtLine. This four-mile walking and biking route, identified by a literal green path painted on the ground akin to Boston’s red Freedom Trail, runs through the heart of the 40 West Arts statecertified creative district and helps solidify Lakewood as a creative destination, drawing visitors from Colorado and beyond. The ArtLine was made possible thanks to a prestigous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Lakewood was awarded the highest possible level of funding through the Our Town grant, which aims to support creative placemaking projects that help transform communities into lively, beautiful and resilient places with the arts at their core.

“We’re all architects who fell in love with public art,” said Drew Gregory about himself and his two colleagues, Clemente Cicoria and Zak Ostrowski, who worked on this project. “It’s incredibly inspiring to create public art where people get to engage and interact with our sculptures.” “WE KNEW THAT THESE PIECES NEEDED TO BE FUN, PLAYFUL AND VIBRANT,” HE ADDED. “We kept looking through Colorado history and came across the fact that the stegosaurus is the state fossil. We noticed all these cool design characteristics like the plates [along its back]. The more research we did, we found that it looks like it was a hard, scary dinosaur, but it was an herbivore and didn’t eat meat, so it was actually a really nice dinosaur!” Perfect inspiration for interactive public art.

40 WEST ARTLINE

PAINTS A PATH TO THE FUTURE

When completed, the ArtLine will connect the three major parks in northeast Lakewood – Aviation, Walker-Branch and Mountair parks – and other destinations in the 40 West Arts District through a variety of interactive experiences, local art and opportunities for residents to play and connect with their community. Accessible by RTD’s W Line light rail service, the project brings inspiration and beauty to existing parks and urban spaces in the area while creating new opportunities for outdoor recreation and activities for residents in northeast Lakewood through a free, immersive outdoor gallery experience. A team of artists called PUNCH, chosen by the ArtLine Public Art committee, is responsible for all three park art installations. 6 May - August 2018 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD

Gregory said their goal was not to be too literal or too abstract, but just representative enough to spark the imaginations of park visitors. They also intentionally used materials that will change with time – like rusted steel that may start off shiny but over time will change color. “Hopefully you can see it once and then come back later and have a different experience,” he added. “I think the ‘Dermal Plate Gateway’ at Mountair Park is really special… there’s a real kinetic energy to this sculpture,” noted Liz Black, 40 West Arts executive director. “As you’re walking through the two pieces that make up the installation, you’ll experience the shadows changing and the plates moving. It will also be visible from the W Line, so IT’S A GREAT WAY TO VISUALLY REPRESENT THE DISTRICT TO PASSERSBY, REALLY SOLIDIFYING LAKEWOOD AS AN ARTS AND CULTURE DESTINATION.” (continued on page 8)

This project is truly a community-driven effort, one that 40 West Arts and other partners have committed to nurturing and evolving so that each visit to the ArtLine can be different from the last. Many neighborhood organizations, including Two Creeks and Northeast Lakewood, worked alongside 40 West and City staff to develop the final concepts and plan for the line, and a group of volunteers, aptly named the ArtLine Champions, have been key to bringing the ArtLine experience to life. Partners like the West Colfax Community Association, Lakewood-West Colfax Business Improvement District, 40 West Arts District and City came together to showcase and improve this special part of town, resulting in a project that reflects the inclusivity, creativity and excitement that our community is built upon. FREE ARTLINE LAUNCH

NEARLY FOUR DOZEN OTHER ART ELEMENTS – INCLUDING GROUND MURALS, FENCE ART, INTERACTIVE SCULPTURES AND ARTLINE STORY TOTEMS – were chosen by a panel of local artists and community members and will be installed along the route. The ArtLine’s logo will be painted at 10 different intersections by community volunteers, led by professional muralist Carlos Fresquez. Alexis Moore, AICP, principal planner for the City of Lakewood, offered an example of one of the many ways someone could spend a day enjoying the ArtLine and Lakewood: “From Denver International Airport, take the A Line to the W Line to the ArtLine. Hop off at the Lamar Station – and make sure you have good walking shoes or a bike – and head east to Mountair Park. Pick up some fresh produce from the park’s farm, play interactive musical instruments, wander through the shadows of ‘Dermal Plate Gateway,’ and experience murals and other unique art installations within the park. Travel a few blocks north, enjoying ground mural games and interactive art along the way, until you reach Walker-Branch Park. Pop into the new Edgewater Library and Recreation Center (which is due to open in late 2018).

8 May - August 2018 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD

BLOCK PARTY 5-8 P.M., FRIDAY, JUNE 1

Celebrate the official kickoff of the ArtLine in conjunction with INSPIRE Arts Week and the 40 West Arts districtwide art walk! Turn to page 10 for details. For more information including opportunities to help paint ground murals and participate in other celebrations throughout the summer, visit 40WestArtLine.org or follow the project at Facebook.com/40WestArtLine. Ready for a break? Have a seat on the built-in benches of ‘Stegoskel,’ which resembles the rib cages of a once-hungry dinosaur, and take in the views of the downtown Denver skyline. Once rested, head west to the core area of the 40 West Arts District to meander through several outstanding galleries and the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design’s beautiful and historic campus. Grab a coffee at award-winning Sweet Bloom Coffee Roasters, and then head to Aviation Park where the back of a stegosaurus seemingly rises out of the ground in ‘Unearthed Plates.’ End the day with a cold one at WestFax Brewing Company, or take the kids into the one and only Casa Bonita to see the cliff divers. Expect to sleep well after spending the perfect day exercising your body and imagination on the 40 West ArtLine.”

ROB

DRABKIN If you’re ever in need of a pick-me-up, spend some time with Rob Drabkin. You may find him having his morning coffee at Huckleberry Roasters in Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood, eating a slice of pepperoni pizza at Parisi on Tennyson or playing his annual birthday show at the Bluebird Theater on East Colfax. You’ll certainly find him on Spotify, where more than two million people have listened to his recent single “Someday.” Wherever you find him, you’re guaranteed a face-stretching smile, the type that begins to hurt after holding it for 20 seconds or so.

Drabkin is kind and thoughtful and full of laughter, someone who genuinely

seems to be having the best day of his life every single day. This is because he’s living his dream: working full time as a musician, writing music, and playing shows with artists he likes and respects. A Denver native, Drabkin found his way to Texas to study biochemistry and molecular biology after winning a scholarship to play guitar in the Jazz Ensemble at Trinity University in San Antonio. Music was a hobby then, something that carried over from high school and life with a jazz saxophonist father. It was during a trip to New York with his dad, near the end of school, that he decided to dedicate his life to music. “The epiphany moment comes when something in your life is going wrong or something isn’t working,” he recalls. “I realized I didn’t want to pursue a life of science and [instead] give my all to music. That was the mentality. But what resulted was a whole bunch of drive. 14 May - August 2018” | BRAVO LAKEWOOD

Lakewood.org/Bravo Photo by Kit Chalberg

“I was still in school when that happened so I kind of had this secret plot going the whole time, and every second I wasn’t in class I was on my guitar and working on ideas for songs.” He returned to Denver and pursued music full time, noting that the Fox Theater in Boulder is still his favorite place to play because it was one of the first venues that gave him a chance to showcase his music and has been steadfastly supportive of his career ever since. Despite a 10-plus-year career that has taken him all over the country and has him playing festivals and sharing stages with artists like Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Death Cab for Cutie and Ziggy Marley, Drabkin chooses to stay in Denver. “People in Colorado love music so much, “ says Drabkin. “That’s another big reason that’s kept me here: There are venues and a growing music scene that is exciting.”

“I realized I didn’t want to

pursue a life of science and [instead] give my all to music.“ Drabkin became a signed artist in 2017, a year that was full of songwriting, touring and a week spent in New York City working with a team of producers on new material. What resulted was a new batch of songs for 2018 while “Someday” continues enjoying international success in the digital space. “[The success of ‘Someday’] was something that had never happened before in my career, and all of a sudden there was a huge audience in Europe for it. Then we got some momentum here with it, and stations I never thought would ever play it played it. Watching it grow was a lot of fun.” Drabkin writes music that swells and soars and makes you feel warm inside – like a beloved song you’re hearing for the first time in years. His concerts are full of energy, laughter and plenty of dancing. He describes his style of music as folk-rock/pop, with him “rockin’ on the six-string acoustic” backed by a high energy band. He promises the audience is going to have a “dang good time.” His new album “Beautiful Day” is available on Spotify and in stores. Learn more at RobDrabkin.com.

ARTIST PR O FILE :

Kristee Graham Artist Kristee Graham loves to surround herself with diverse people and art forms. Native to Littleton, Kristee grew up around her family’s metal casting business and learned at an early age how to make prototype belt buckles and jewelry. Kristee inherited her love of art from her parents, and it has always been a part of her life, even in high school when she considered other career paths. “I made a list of all [the things] I wanted to do, and thought, I can be an astronomer, an astronaut, an archaeologist, but then I started thinking about those things,” Kristee shares with a laugh. After considering the challenges faced by astronauts, she decided to stick to art.

“I decided to paint space instead of going there.” Kristee has been teaching at Lakewood Cultural Center since 2013, and her art serves as an escape to far-off lands, featuring dreamlike portrayals of castles, creatures and outer space that ignite curiosity for what may be beyond the reach of our perception.of our perception. Kristee thrives when trying new things, be it a fresh idea for a children’s camp or an experimental artistic direction. Her current project, which has been in the works for almost a year, presents her space art in an entirely innovative way – on recycled and refurbished doors.

When she first started teaching herself to paint, she was self-conscious about the unrealistic, bold neon colors in her art. But she realized it was important that she like her own art and embraced the bright colors that now serve as her trademark. Her perception of art also shifted when she began teaching children’s art camps. Kristee says, “I learn a lot more from the kids than I ever do from myself.” She loves that children are so much more open to creativity, and she gives an example of teaching both children and adults the same painting project. “The kids finish in an hour, and the adults finish in two hours because the adults have to get past their lifelong block of thinking ‘I’m not creative, I’ve never painted before,’ but the kids jump right in.” Whether it is in her intergenerational “Create with Me” class with toddlers and their parents/caregivers or at her painting parties for adults, Kristee explains that there is always one individual completely intimidated by the process and another that pays little attention to her teaching and creates something unique. Kristee once watched a student muddy up the canvas over and over until she finally asked “What’s going on here?” The student had created an abstract piece with graffiti lettering over the top that was different from every other painting in the room. “That was one of the best things I ever learned: allow students to express themselves without passing judgment.”

The most common advice Kristee gives to students of all ages is that “paint is forgiving. Many people say, ‘Oh I messed it up, can I start over?’ And I say, ‘No you didn’t mess up, just paint over it. Keep going, you’ll get there.’” This mantra also helps to keep her motivated in her art. If she sticks with a piece long enough she will be happy with it. Kristee considers patience to be the most important trait one can develop when starting as an artist and as a teacher.

Local golfers, however, would recognize it immediately as the original sign from Lakewood’s Fox Hollow Golf Course, celebrating its 25th year in operation this summer. As part of the festivities, Fox Hollow recently completed a brand refresh, which included a new logo, and thus, new signs. Although the branding is fresh and new, Fox Hollow is home to many longterm staffers including PGA Pro Craig Parzybok and LPGA Assistant Pro Paula Bauer. Fox Hollow is situated on Army Corps of Engineers land, which means there are no homes along the course. This provides golfers with a serene natural beauty that is all but unparalleled in the area. Every effort is made to retain the natural beauty of the course from elevation changes and towering trees to ponds and picturesque streams full of wildlife. This focus on nature allows golfers not only to enjoy the physical activity of golf but also the stunning natural setting nestled against the rugged Front Range. Fox Hollow staff is committed to ensuring the natural habitats and wildlife along the course are protected, and for this exceptional dedication to conservation, the course has been a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 1995. When asked about their favorite features of the course, players often mention the elevated tee boxes on The Canyon Nine, the panoramic views of The Links Nine and a visit to Meadow #5 to see the oldest living cottonwood tree in Colorado, just in front of the green on the right side. The course has played home to thousands of events and fundraisers, including several years as host to the Elway Foundation’s annual tournament. With such a colorful and exciting past, there is nothing but blue skies ahead for Fox Hollow and the golfers who call it home. Congratulations to Fox Hollow on its fantastic 25 years and to Superintendent Mark Krick, who was this year’s Rocky Mountain CGSA chapter winner of the Environmental Leaders in Golf Award.
