A HALF-CENTURY OF TRANSFORMATION Lakewood, Colorado 1969–2019

The book “A Half-Century of Transformation: Lakewood, Colorado, 1969-2019” was created to commemorate Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary of incorporation. Stop by the Lakewood Heritage Center’s 20th Century Emporium or visit bit.ly/Lakewood50Book to place a presale order today. The book will be released mid-June. In 1969, a group of residents led numerous neighborhoods to come together to form the City of Lakewood. A number of factors combined to support the incorporation including concern that Denver would annex the area, worry about a lack of sufficient law enforcement services for a growing area, and apprehension that a forced annexation by Denver would damage the high quality of education available in the schools in Jefferson County. Over the last fifty years, many changes and transitions have taken place, but one thing has remained constant—the residents’ pride in their city. This book is not a history book but rather a celebration of the city’s humble beginnings, the transformations that have carried it forward to today, and the culture and amenities that define Lakewood.

Building on the early history of the area, this book covers the complex, but as yet, under-explored period of Lakewood from incorporation to the present day. It is a celebration of how Lakewood has grown over the last five decades into the city it is today.

LAKEWOOD HERITAGE CENTER EXHIBITION OPENING

LAKEWOOD: A 20TH CENTURY JOURNEY The new permanent exhibit opening Thursday evening, June 27, at the Lakewood Heritage Center will explore 100 years of Lakewood’s history.

T

he journey all started with a Hoosier cabinet. This type of free-standing cupboard was popular in the 1920s when most kitchens did not have built in cabinets. But this cupboard also has the distinction of being the first artifact given to the Lakewood Historical Society in the 1970s. The society later transferred this and other donated objects and photographs to the City of Lakewood to use for education programs and exhibits.

Mayor James Richey at the dedication and grand opening of the Belmar Museum on August 1, 1976.

For the past fifteen years, the “Spirit of Lakewood” exhibit filled the Lakewood Heritage Center’s visitor center with photographs and displays telling 20th century Lakewood stories up to the city’s incorporation in 1969. And now the time has come for a change. Visitors want to see more of Lakewood’s history in exhibits, museum staff want to address artifact preservation and new donations have given the museum new stories to tell. More than three years ago, while planning Lakewood’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2019, the city first started thinking about creating a new exhibit. It was important to include the community in the conversation, so the Lakewood Heritage Center embarked on an extensive outreach effort to update its master plan and expand its story through the end of the 20th century. The process engaged residents and asked them to help define what was important about Lakewood’s history and the stories that should be preserved and told. Feedback from online surveys, engagement and discussions during the annual Cider Days event, several open houses and meetings informed planning, especially calls to integrate new themes in the exhibit. Continued on page 8.

Forrest and Pat Wilcox helped staff the Lakewood Historical Society’s table at the 4th of July Celebration held at Lakewood Park in 1976. They sold memberships in the society as well as Centennial Commission souvenir glasses.

This nearly 9-foot-tall neon sign (left) advertising a frothy beer once beckoned passers-by to stop into the popular Lane’s Tavern (right), which operated from the 1920s to 1996 on West Colfax Avenue. The sign will help create a warmly lit walk down memory lane in the exhibit “Lakewood: A 20th Century Journey.”

Museum visitors, local historians, business owners, civic leaders, volunteers and partners had diverse interests ranging from making an exhibit that was more inclusive and interactive to ensuring that the connection between historical and contemporary matters such as water rights and health care were not forgotten. We listened and then we acted. The 2017 Lakewood Heritage Center master plan identified seven themes that will be illustrated in the exhibit with photographs, text, objects and activities: water, agriculture, health and wellness, transportation, Denver Ordnance Plant and Federal Center, commercial growth and incorporation. Lakewood Heritage Center museum staff worked for more than a year researching content, scanning photographs, measuring artifacts, rewriting text panels, rebuilding walls and choosing color schemes. “Staff have met many new friends on this journey: a firefighter who worked when the stations were still volunteer-run, a business owner on Colfax whose parents emigrated from Vietnam, a Native artist who makes local films, a musician who collects postcards and a farmer who still works the land where her ancestors homesteaded,” said museum curator Katy Lewis. “The Lakewood Heritage Center is committed to becoming a space for the Lakewood community to share stories. The exhibit will include a ‘scrapbook’ area where visitors can write about their own histories, which will then be added to the exhibit on a rotating basis.” During Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary year, other projects already unveiled at the Lakewood Heritage Center include a website, Lakewood.PastPerfectOnline.com, where people can view objects online no matter where they live; an oral history program that encourages people to speak directly about their experiences; and a robust temporary exhibit schedule so we can more fully report on the past, present and future of Lakewood. The Lakewood Heritage Center focuses on the 20th century because that is when the development of Lakewood as a city first began, and the museum can use these pieces of the past to remain relevant to residents and visitors today.

“As we celebrate Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary, it is exciting to reflect on the ways in which art and culture have impacted our city in the past. But, art is also a place where the people of Lakewood can celebrate the present and look toward the future,” said Lakewood Cultural Center’s arts programming curator Laine Godsey. “Art inspires us to think creatively and innovatively; it offers our community a shared experience through which we find common ground and art applauds the extraordinary human diversity that makes our community strong.”

EXHIBITION TimeShare

EX HIB ITIO N

Surface, Multimedia Performance, David B. Smith Gallery, Denver, September 2018.

A new, digital and time-based arts festival presented by Lakewo od Cultural Center in partnership with RMCAD and 40 West Arts. TimeShare is a communitywide arts engagement opportunity with a unifying theme of looking forward at Lakewood. By exhibiting artworks that are forward thinking, TimeShare is asking the community to explore arts and technological developments of the past and present while celebrating the next 50 years of artistic progress within Lakewood. This multifaceted exhibition highlights the dynamic intersection of art and technology. Within the territory of a digital environment, artists and viewers are rediscovering the romantic notion of exploration. The charm of presenting a tantalizing vision of the future made the works of Jules Verne, the Jetsons and “Back to the Future” a format for imaging big ideas, celebrating progress and marveling at the human potential. There is space for ingenuity, creativity and carving an uncharted path within art.

TimeShare’s goal is to bring together artists and cultural producers who are grappling with the collision of technology and art with a sense of wonder and curiosity. Existing as a concurrently held series of exhibitions across the City of Lakewood, Lakewood Cultural Center, 40 West Arts District and Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD), it will feature innovative work in experimental/new, digital and time-based mediums. TimeShare will showcase video, 3D and animated shorts, soundscapes, digitally enhanced performances and experimental photography. The festival will be punctuated by evenings of art tours and First Fridays through 40 West ArtLine and associated galleries. TimeShare: Night of Screenings will kick off the festival on May 10. The screenings will be accompanied by moderated discussions between New Genres Collective, RMCAD students and participating artists.

Lucid, Multimedia Performance, Mary Harris Auditorium, RMCAD, September 2017.

New Genres Collective lead member Drew Austin provides tips for viewing digital art. “I think there are two ways to look at a piece of digital art, both which offer very different readings. “One, give in fully to the work. Let the technology, the light, the spectacle, or the oddity of the work engulf you and appreciate what you are experiencing. “Two, look past the technology and look for deeper meaning. Artists often use new media to speak to new media mania (cellphones, social media, documentation and sharing). Try to see past the flash of new technologies and look at what the artist is trying to comment on, rather than the method, which is simply a means to deliver the message.”

FREE! COMMUNITY EVENT ROCKIN’ BLOCK PARTY

Party like it’s 1969 at Lakewood’s free Rockin’ Block Party on June 8. We’re traveling back to 1969 to celebrate the city’s incorporation! Catch Beatlemania with themed live music and watch a movie under the stars at the Rockin’ Block Party, a free funfilled kickoff to the summer season from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday, June 8 at the Lakewood Heritage Center. Wear your best flower-power fashions recalling a time when tie-dye, flared pants, fringed vests and round, colorful glasses were all the rage. Kids and adults will walk away with some great prizes from the best dressed competition! The evening begins with kids activities, tasty dinner options from food trucks and local brews from the Lakewood Beer Garden presented by Foothills Credit Union. Live music starts at 5:30 p.m. with Santana tribute band Soul Sacrifice, which faithfully recreates the Latin-infused rock classics that has made Santana a favorite since its electrifying breakthrough performance at Woodstock in 1969. Then, get ready for the British Invasion at 7 p.m. when 4 Lads from Liverpool plays a set jam packed with 1960s Beatles hits. The band will take you on an epic journey to the era the Beatles helped define. “The message of love that came out of their music is universal and has stood the test of time,” said 4 Lads. Bring a blanket and settle in for the movie “The Love Bug” at 9 p.m., and watch the comedic adventures of a down-on-his-luck race car driver and Herbie, the Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own.

SOUNDS EXCITING! SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

T

here’s nothing quite like an outdoor summer concert at the Lakewood Heritage Center. It provides a midweek escape to an idyllic hillside with sweeping mountain views and dramatic sunsets, local brews and food truck fare, and community members of every age and background—all ready to rock! The Hazel Miller Band, a longtime favorite in the Colorado music scene, is returning to kick off the series with rhythm and blues on June 19. “The energy was amazing. Hazel Miller had the entire

crowd dancing and singing along,” said concertgoer Carleen Brice about last year’s sold-out performance. Another beloved Colorado band will perform in July. Chris Daniels and the Kings have been playing funk and blues for more than three decades—and Chris has been playing in Colorado since around the same time of the City of Lakewood’s incorporation in 1969 (that’s him on the front cover, far left).

The rest of the series will delight fans of all music genres with acts that range from funk and alternative rock to bluegrass and country. “Concerts are known to brighten moods and increase a sense of connection and community,” said Rebecca Gushen, Lakewood’s community events coordinator. “The upbeat bands this summer are going to make your Wednesday nights the best yet.”

Big Boom Bash by Lakewood a free community fireworks celebration on July 4 at Jeffco Stadium Big Boom Bash, an Independence Day celebration hosted by the City of Lakewood, will take place on Thursday, July 4, rain or shine, at Jeffco Stadium, 500 Kipling St. Admission is free for this event, which culminates with a spectacular 20-minute fireworks display at dark. The stadium gates will open at 5:30 p.m., and everyone is invited to spread a picnic blanket on the infield or pick seats on the bleachers. Grab a bite to eat at local food trucks and swing by the Lakewood Beer Garden presented by Foothills Credit Union for beer from Lakewood breweries. This year’s improved parking plan includes additional parking spots and a designated zone for ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft. MIX 100 radio station will be on-site with prizes and fun, playing hits and patriotic songs throughout the evening. The fireworks display will be choreographed to music simulcast by MIX 100, and spectators outside of the stadium are encouraged to tune in to 100.3 FM to enjoy. “Last year was such a great event. Neighbors from across the city came together, and the fireworks were fantastic,” Mayor Adam Paul said. “This year will be even better because we’ll be celebrating Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary with some music from that era and other fun additions to the Big Boom Bash.” The fireworks show will feature thousands of hand-selected shells to create a dazzling display for Lakewood, including color-changing strobes and brocades, sun rings, blue jellyfish, butterflies, falling leaves and other effects. The show will incorporate three different launch sites to produce a dynamic array, with fireworks reaching heights of 800 feet.

“The fireworks show was among the best I have ever seen. Having MIX 100 playing music while watching the show made it incredible. My 7-year-old repeatedly said ‘Wow!’ and ‘Cool!’ It was such a fun night!” – 2018 Big Boom Bash attendee Help make Big Boom Bash a zero-waste event by packing food in reusable non-glass containers and using products that can be composted or recycled. Non-alcoholic drinks in factorysealed containers will be permitted, and you are welcome to bring an empty water bottle to fill at stations inside the stadium. Smoking and vaping are not allowed anywhere on the Jeffco Stadium grounds or parking lot. For a full list of items allowed or prohibited from the venue, visit BigBoomBash.com or call the Big Boom Bash hotline at 303-987-7899.
