A musical gift for Lakewood Cultural Center! Walt Strony

New On Stage at the theater We are pleased to announce that a state-ofthe-art Walt Strony Signature Quantum™ STR-4 digital theater/classical organ has been installed at Lakewood Cultural Center. Installation at LCC was handled by members of the Rocky Mountain Chapter American Theatre Organ Society. RMCATOS spent many hours experimenting with the positioning of the organ console and its 20 speakers, adjusting cables and baffles, to find the optimal placement for all necessary components. Walt Strony then provided the finishing touches by voicing the instrument to our unique space. Classical pipe organs are found mostly in churches and orchestral concert halls. When silent films came out in the early 1900s, background music was provided by live orchestras or pianos. The theater organ was invented to replace the more expensive live orchestra and later, electronic organs were introduced. People also wanted to play organs in their homes, but did not have the space nor the funds for a “real” home pipe organ. To meet the demand for such an instrument in homes and churches, electronic organs were introduced into the market. As technology progressed digital organs came into being. The sounds of real pipes are digitally sampled (recorded) and those sounds are digitally stored and when triggered by touching a key or a pedal, and then the selected sounds are retrieved and played through a speaker system. The new Walt Strony Signature digital organ at Lakewood Cultural Center will be used for theater and/or classical organ concerts, accompaniment of silent films and in conjunction with other Center activities and performances. 16 January - April 2017 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD

One of the world’s top organ artists for both classical and theater organs, Walt Strony has performed hundreds of concerts from coast to coast in the United States as well as in Japan, Australia, England and Canada. In addition, he has performed at many conventions of the American Theatre Organ Society and the American Guild of Organists. In Lakewood he will present a theater organ workshop, accompany a silent film and perform a full-length concert. As the specification designer of the STR-4, who better than Walt to explain and exploit the intricacies of theater organ and classical organ performance! WEEKEND WITH WALT | March 18 -19, 2017 Workshop: Everything You Wanted to Know About Theater Organs but Were Afraid to Ask 2-4 p.m., Saturday, March 18 Presented on stage for organists and organ enthusiasts alike, Walt provides insight into theater organ playing and registration. Tricks of the trade will be revealed. Be prepared to take notes (no pun intended!). Workshop is $25. • Lakewood.org/Workshops Performance: The Mark of Zorro 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 18 See p. 10 for event details Performance: Walt Strony in Concert 2 p.m., Sunday, March 19 See p. 10 for event details

The color Artist Profile

It is impossible not to have fun with Sean Doherty. A working artist for over 30 years, Sean is full of wisdom and light and laughter and boundless energy. His outdoor studio in Lakewood’s 40 West Arts District is a happy cacophony of sound, color, and shape, where Sean works year-round creating towering flowers and other whimsical sculptures out of steel, aluminum and found materials. Currently, Doherty is working on a towering Praying Mantis sculpture for installation in Eiber Elementary’s school garden. Commissioned through a collaboration between the City of Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts division and Denver Urban Gardens, the polka-dotted Praying Mantis is meant to show school aged children that found materials have value and can inspire creativity. As Doherty likes to say, he does not consider himself a craftsman, he’s a “crapsman,” noting that no space is sacred. Back in his corporate sales days, he carried a colorfully painted briefcase which he noted was a “great conversation starter.” Sean chose to put down roots in 40 West Arts District because it has all the room and space he needs, plus a built-in community with a relaxed, laid-back vibe. He laughed and noted that in Lakewood, you can have a full-sized goat and a bonfire, meaning that the city is just a bit more relaxed and accommodating than its closest neighbors. Doherty sees Lakewood as the Denver area’s new arts hub, with many artists and galleries making the move West in search of increased space at lower costs. When asked what his personal tour of Lakewood would be, Doherty said, “Go to Lakewood Grill for a burger and over around Casa Bonita for a beer at WestFax Brewing, then tour the 40 West galleries there (Everything Gallery and Lakewood Arts Council). Then we’d bike over to the roundabout where the puzzle piece sculpture is (“Connected” at 14th & Lamar St.) then go to see Lonnie Hanzon’s light rail piece (“Legacy Trees” at RTD W Line Lamar Street Station).” 18 January - April 2017 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD

orful world of Sean Doherty Through immense talent and tenacity, Doherty has found tremendous success in the Colorado art scene. He was the first artist ever allowed by the Denver Public School District to manipulate the exterior of a building, when he added fanciful bugs, butterflies and flowers to the exterior of Carson Elementary. He has since decorated fourteen other schools in the metro area, adding to his 150 large scale sculptures that stretch from Castle Rock to Lakewood. His largest installation is a mile-long sculpture lining Broadway in Englewood, featuring 32 large flowers. He also has 14 large pieces on Morrison Road. Once you have seen Sean’s work, it is hard to go anywhere in the metro area and not spot one of his sculptures. When talking about his work, he often mentions personal voice, saying, “Everyone has a voice in a different way. My voice is the three-dimensional physical form. Art is the way I speak. I can’t run from it.” Much of Sean’s work is in flowers, which he notes for their versatility, saying, “They are proper for everything from a funeral to positive affirmation, pain, sorrow...they transcend.” He hasn’t yet gotten tired of his floral creations, likening them to a Dr. Seuss painting or “crazy music in my head.” Flowers just makes sense once you meet Sean, as they, like him, ooze vibrancy and color. When asked about his message to the world, or at least to the 35,000 readers of BRAVO, Doherty said, “ I hope everyone gets that special moment; there is something that everyone does better than everyone else, the gift they are given. The pursuit of that, where you find that moment and feel it, that’s what I would wish for all people. I think that makes you human. Everything else seems like a waste of all that time and energy.” Sean always ends his emails, phone calls, conversations and casual greetings with the same cheery, “Keep a smile!” He says his dad once said the same thing to him, and its stuck as sort of a mantra. It’s a perfect one, as Sean is a bright spot on Lakewood’s shining arts scene. Keep a smile! Lakewood.org/Bravo

Lakewood Looks Back: WESTERNAIRES

Imagine yourself as a young person living in rural Jefferson County, a land full of tractors, dirt roads and farm animals. The Westernaires was started for you. Elmer Wyland, a Mountain Bell telephone company executive and Colorado native, had a lifelong passion for horses and history. After he and his wife, Marjorie, joined Lakewood’s riding club and participated in the local parades, Lakewood Youth Council asked him to create a community-building project. A kid’s group centered on horses seemed to be the perfect fit for an area where, in 1949, ranching and 4-H groups still flourished. The precision drill riding team, called the Paul Gregg Pony Club after the late Denver Post artist, was open to any residents of Jefferson County between the ages of nine and nineteen. Twenty-six young riders joined up immediately. Wyland—fascinated by the roles of Native Americans, U.S. cavalry, Buffalo Soldiers and Mexican cowboy charros in the early West—ran the team with strict guidelines for dress, attendance and behavior. By 1954, the group moved from the Mississippi Stables at Mississippi Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds and changed their name to The Westernaires – the youth noted that they rode horses, not ponies. This was also the first year that they presented an “Extravaganza” in the Livestock Building. There were seats for about 900 people and the organization had to borrow heaters from the local telephone company to heat the barn. Early volunteers built concrete steps into the arena that still exist today. This event has evolved into the “Horsecapades,” staged each year in October with almost 1,000 riders. Glen Keller took the reins of The Westernaires in 1983, when Elmer Wyland passed away. Keller, the son of a Longmont farm-implements dealer, buried his childhood love of horses in a fulfilling career as a lawyer until a day in 1976 when he and his family went to see The Westernaires perform. He joined up as a volunteer and never looked back, organizing teams of youth and horses celebrating speed and self-reliance. In the early years, The Westernaires drove a herd of horses over Green Mountain to use in practice; now they have over 100 horses that riders can learn from, take care of and train. The Westernaires still exist today at Fort Westernaire in the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, harkening back to a more agricultural time in Jefferson County and Lakewood, but still teaching youth self-respect, responsibility and leadership through horsemanship and family participation. The Orrin C. Curtiss Westernaire Museum of Western and Riding History at 15200 W. 6th Avenue in Lakewood is open on Saturdays throughout the year, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Inside, there’s a library filled with Western and Colorado History books, and exhibits about the anatomy of the horse, the history of the region and the progression of the saddle. There are branding irons, barbed wire, bits, bridles, stirrups, spurs and even the carriage that brought Abraham Lincoln to the train in Springfield, Illinois as he set off to serve as U.S. President. For more information on the Westernaires, visit Westernaires.org. 20 January - April 2017 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD
