FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the first production of Colorado Ballet’s outstanding 59th season! The 2019/2020 season offers something for everyone with five productions at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Classical favorites include Don Quixote and the beloved holiday tradition The Nutcracker. Back by popular demand, we will present Peter Pan in February. Continuing in the spirit of innovative dance with acclaimed contemporary works, Colorado Ballet will again present Tour de Force in March, and close the season with Ballet MasterWorks, featuring Theme and Variations, Petite Mort and In the Upper Room. As I start my 14th season as Colorado Ballet’s artistic director, I want to thank everyone who supports the ballet by purchasing tickets, making contributions and attending our events—you make these performances possible! Last season we continued to see record breaking sales for a fifth consecutive year. Colorado Ballet continues to receive rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, and we look forward to giving you another season of outstanding performances! Thank you for joining us for today’s performance of Don Quixote. Based on the classic novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, the ballet Don Quixote remains one of today’s most frequently performed works with original classical choreography by Marius Petipa and music by Ludwig Minkus. Stunning Spanish sets and costumes pair with challenging choreography and a touch of romantic comedy as Don Quixote and Sancho Panza search for a noble adventure with surprises at every turn. Next up, we invite you to join us for The Nutcracker, a holiday classic that delights audiences and sells out every season. Experience Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary music performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra, and find out what makes this ballet so enchanting by experiencing the tradition, humor and magic of this seasonal production. In February of 2020, Colorado Ballet will present Peter Pan. Don’t miss this high-flying adventure to Neverland where Peter Pan, Wendy, John and Michael experience pirates, Lost Boys, Captain Hook, an infamous crocodile and a little bit of pixie dust as this brilliant story unfolds. With choreography by Michael Pink and music by Philip Feeney, this ballet features the same artistic duo that created the acclaimed ballet Dracula, which Colorado audiences will recall from sold-out performances in 2017. Our Tour de Force program in March will open with Feast of the Gods by choreographer Edwaard Liang, who won the Prince Prize for Choreography and was nominated for the Golden Mask Award in Russia for Best Production. The program will include a world premiere by Julia Adam choreographed on our dancers, and close with Celts, a bold and thrilling work set to a traditional Irish score by choreographer Lila York. To close the 2019/2020 season in April, we will present monumental favorites in Ballet MasterWorks. This season’s program will feature the ever popular Petite Mort by choreographer Jiří Kylián, In The Upper Room by Twyla Tharp and Theme and Variations by Balanchine, which is set to the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Orchestral Suite No. 3. The repertoire on this program profoundly impacted the art form and remains at the core of the 20th century ballet repertoire. Thank you for attending Don Quixote and for supporting Colorado Ballet. Enjoy the performance!

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES On behalf of Colorado Ballet Board of Trustees, we are happy to welcome you to the company’s 59th season. It is with great pride and gratitude that we announce that last year was the company’s fifthconsecutive “best year on record.” Again, this season, all five productions will be performed at the Ellie Caulkin’s Opera House. With the classic Don Quixote, the beloved annual tradition The Nutcracker, the family favorite Peter Pan, and the amazing repertory series Tour de Force and Ballet MasterWorks, this upcoming season will not disappoint. Colorado Ballet is truly a world-class company and our city is a better place because of it! In addition to presenting outstanding performances, Colorado Ballet also educates the next generation of dancers through the Raydean Acevedo Colorado Ballet Academy. PNC Wealth Management Presents
DON QUIXOTE October 4 - 13, 2019 Ellie Caulkins Opera House
Premiered December 26, 1869 at Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia Choreography after Marius Petipa Staged by Gil Boggs, Sandra Brown, Lorita Travaglia and Maria Mosina Libretto by Marius Petipa, based on episodes from Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote Music by Ludwig Minkus Lighting Design by Todd Elmer Production courtesy of American Ballet Theatre Synopsis Prologue: Driven by the vision of Dulcinea, Don Quixote begins his adventures with his trusty squire, Sancho Panza, in tow. Act I: A market place in Seville. Kitri, Lorenzo’s daughter, is in love with Basilio. Much to her chagrin, she learns of her father’s plans to marry her to Gamache, a foppish nobleman. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza enter the village, causing great commotion. Noticing Kitri, Don Quixote wonders if he has, at last, found his Dulcinea, the woman of his dreams. At the height of merriment, Kitri and Basilio, aided by their friends, Espada and Mercedes, sneak off followed by Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Gamache and Lorenzo attempt to pursue the young couple. Act II. Scene 1: Gypsy Camp. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza discover the fleeing couple in a friendly gypsy camp. All are inspired by the romance of the night. As the vision of Dulcinea appears to him, Don Quixote realizes Kitri is not his “ideal,” but indeed belongs with Basilio. Suddenly the wind gains momentum. Don Quixote foolishly attacks a windmill, believing it to be a giant threatening Dulcinea’s safety. Failing miserably, he collapses into a deep sleep. Act II. Scene 2: The Dream. Don Quixote has an enchanted dream of beautiful maidens in which the image of Kitri symbolizes his Dulcinea. Act II. Scene 3: Sunrise. Awoken from his dream by Sancho Panza, Don Quixote is sympathetic to the plight of the young lovers. Don Quixote attempts to lead Lorenzo and Gamache astray in their search for the young lovers. Act II. Scene 4: A Tavern. Kitri enters with Basilio and they join in the dancing. Lorenzo and Gamache enter looking for Kitri. Basilio draws a knife and pretends to stab himself. Kitri implores Lorenzo, her father, to unite her with Basilio as his dying last wish, but Lorenzo refuses. Don Quixote appears with Sancho Panza and challenges Lorenzo for refusing a man’s dying wish. Lorenzo then agrees to unite Basilio and Kitri. At this moment Basilio returns to life, admitting he was only playing a joke. Triumphantly, Kitri leaves to prepare for marriage while Don Quixote and Basilio salute Lorenzo and Gamache for stoically accepting the inevitable. Act III: The Wedding. The village celebrates the marriage. Don Quixote congratulates the couple, bids them a warm farewell, and resumes his ever-lasting adventures.

SEE WHY OUR DANCERS CALL THIS THEIR “FAVORITE PROGRAM OF THE SEASON” 20TH CENTURY REPERTOIRE TAKES THE STAGE
This season’s Ballet MasterWorks program features three works that remain central masterpieces of the 20th century—and also top many dancers’ “bucket list” of ultimate works that challenge and inspire. “Just visualizing the opening of Petite Mort gives me chills when I think about it.” — Colorado Ballet Principal Dancer We invite you to join us for Ballet MasterWorks in April 2020. Demonstrating supreme athleticism, elegance and versatility, this performance will send chills down your spine and give you a thrilling experience.
THEME AND VARIATIONS CHOREOGRAPHY BY GEORGE BALANCHINE
“The ballet opens to reveal a corps of twelve women and a principal couple. As the ballet moves from variation to variation, the solo performances of the ballerina and her cavalier are interspersed among the corps performances.” (©The George Balanchine Trust) Set to the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3 for Orchestra in G major, the dancers move continuously throughout the entire work with a build-up in momentum that increases to the climactic finale, which showcases the entire cast of 26 dancers. Dancers often refer to Balanchine’s classical choreography as some of the most difficult in the classical repertoire.
PETITE MORT CHOREOGRAPHY BY JIŖÍ KYLIÁN
Czech native Jiří Kylián, “one of the most influential choreographers of the last thirty years” (New York Times), created Petite Mort for the Nederlands Dans Theater to perform at the 1991 Salzburg Festival on the second centenary of Mozart’s death. Petite Mort, which means “small death,” serves as a euphemism for orgasm in French and Arabic. The work incorporates subtle sexual imagery, exploring the concept with characteristic wit, humor and eroticism. Set to Mozart’s most popular Piano Concertos Nos. 21 and 23, the choreography includes six men, six women and six fencing foils. The foils, manipulated by the dancers, act as dance partners and repeatedly show themselves as willful and indomitable as living partners. Kylián also playfully incorporates black silk baroque dresses. Like the fencing foils, the dresses transition between the roles of prop and partner. The dancers alternately wear, dance around and hide behind them. Petite Mort continues to inspire dancers and audiences across the globe and remains central in today’s ballet repertoire.
IN THE UPPER ROOM CHOREOGRAPHY BY TWYLA THARP
Following a grueling year of touring, Tharp’s company took a year-long hiatus, reassembling in May 1986. The first new piece they performed was In The Upper Room. Tharp commissioned composer Philip Glass to create a new score. “The music hints at things, but I tried to leave a lot of space for the dance to happen,” states Glass, “In that way the dancers complete it, fill it in.” The choreography fuses a broad spectrum of movement into one vigorous vocabulary; boxing, tap dance, yoga, ballet and full-out sprinting are intertwined. The dancers must push through the difficult steps, intricate timing and aerobic demands of the choreography. The dancers appear and disappear through fog and lights designed by Jennifer Tipton. The costumes by Norma Kamali begin as black and white striped jumpsuits. As the piece progresses, the dancers shed layers of clothing, revealing bright red under-layers and sweaty skin. In The Upper Room synthesizes choreography, costumes, music and lighting into a transcendent experience for both audience and performers. It has become a central piece in the repertories of dance companies worldwide. — ©Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation
