FROM THE DIRECTORS Thank you for joining us for our spring season! Colorado Ballet brings you two productions that will highlight the talent, artistry and athleticism of our dancers. I am proud to present the first repertory program in my tenure performed with the accompaniment of Colorado Ballet Orchestra, Ballet MasterWorks. The second performance of the season is a powerful and moving ballet, Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project. Both of these will leave the audience in awe. Ballet MasterWorks is a spectacular collection of three different works. Highlighting this program will be the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s score The Rite of Spring. We are honored to perform this ground breaking piece of music to Glen Tetley’s ballet Le Sacre du Printemps. The performance begins with a ballet by one of the greatest choreographers who ever lived, George Balanchine and his ballet, Theme and Variations, danced to the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3 for Orchestra. Ballet MasterWorks will also showcase the world premiere of the new work In Pieces, choreographed by Val Caniparoli to Concerto in Pieces by Poul Ruders. Caniparoli has choreographed for more than 35 companies around the world and his versatility has made him one of the most sought after American choreographers in the United States and abroad. We end the 2012-2013 season with Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project. Stephen Mills, Artistic Director for Ballet Austin, created this ballet that is inspired by the poignant journey of one Holocaust survivor. Light is set to the music of five notable composers including Philip Glass, and Arvo Part. This ballet highlights the power of the human spirit. These performances both demonstrate the passion that Colorado Ballet offers to the performing arts in Colorado. Next season we will bring the same amount of excitement and talent so stay tuned! Thank you for your continued support! Sincerely, Gil Boggs Artistic Director
Welcome to our spring season! If you joined us for the performance of The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker we thank you! We now transition from 19th century ballets to the innovative and uplifting Ballet MasterWorks, and Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project. Ballet MasterWorks is a true challenge for Colorado Ballet dancers and the orchestra. This feast for the senses features Stravinsky, Balanchine and a world premiere. MasterWorks is an intensely passionate and athletic repertory! Last spring, I had the opportunity to watch the Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project at Ballet Austin, created by Stephen Mills. Light inspired and uplifted me because it brings something so powerful to life through the use of dance. Based on the life of a Holocaust survivor, Light shines a spotlight on discrimination while celebrating the triumph of the human spirit. Light is not just a performance, it is the centerpiece of a community outreach program. This community education partnership promotes the protection of human rights through arts, education and public dialogue. Light/ The Holocaust & Humanity Project started around Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January and will run through Holocaust Remembrance Week in mid-April. The education partnership will feature events and initiatives led by more than 90 community partners. Each partner comes into the project with the common hope that we can create a more just world through conversations started in schools, theatres, public spaces and in homes throughout Colorado. The project elements include the ballet Light, a public lecture series, teacher professional development, school programs on anti-bullying, art exhibits, visual and performance art productions, and community dialogue including a town hall meeting. I am so honored to co-chair the task force for Light with Colorado Ballet trustee Cheri Rubin and that Governor John Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael B. Hancock will serve as Honorary Chairs. I hope you enjoy both of these extraordinary performances! Next year Colorado Ballet will continue to bring you exceptional entertainment. I want to thank everyone who supported Colorado Ballet this year. We look forward to seeing you next season! My best, Marie Belew Wheatley Executive Director

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Welcome to Ballet MasterWorks and Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project! The spring productions start with Ballet MasterWorks, a collection of three different works that you will absolutely love. We end with Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project, a true representation of how Colorado Ballet believes in our community and has the power to get everyone involved for a greater cause. We are proud to announce that this season’s The Nutcracker broke records! We surpassed previous revenue and attendance records, including the 50th anniversary season. Thanks to your generous support, Colorado Ballet had the most successful Nutcracker ever in 2012. We love increasing our fan base and hope attendees will come back every year and enjoy other Colorado Ballet productions. Colorado Ballet impacts Denver in so many ways. More than 2,000 students from high percentage Title 1 schools joined us for this season’s free student matinee of The Nutcracker. Student matinees are just one of the many ways that Colorado Ballet’s Education and Outreach exposes children to the culture of dance and the magic that the arts can bring into their lives. We give this gift through subsidized dance classes, student matinees, and enrichment assemblies in schools and reach more than 60,000 contacts each year. I am honored to represent Colorado Ballet’s Board of Trustees which supports Colorado Ballet. The artistic talent of Gil Boggs and his team add so much to cultural life of Colorado. Through the loyalty of our trustees and friends, Colorado Ballet makes Denver one of the best places to live. I hope you enjoy the performance! Merry Logan Board Chair

COLORADO BALLET’S SPRING PRODUCTIONS Colorado Ballet’s spring productions are unlike its typical spring ballets. Because we had such a successful season in 2011-2012, we have an opportunity to provide a riskier season this spring. We hope that you enjoy these powerful pieces featuring outstanding music and dance.
Ballet MasterWorks Theme and Variations A Legendary Pairing - Two of the greatest in their art forms, with choreography by George Balanchine & music by Tchaikovsky in one tremendous production. Man Behind the Dance - George Balanchine is widely regarded as the foremost neoclassical choreographer in the world of ballet and has been credited for the successful fusion of contemporary concepts with the vocabulary of classical ballet. 10 Years - Colorado Ballet hasn’t performed a Balanchine work in nearly 10 years.
In Pieces World Premiere - This world premiere, In Pieces is choreographed by San Francisco Ballet choreographer Val Caniparoli. Guest Choreographer - Contributing to the repertories of more than 35 dance companies, Caniparoli is one of the most sought after choreographers in the United States and abroad. Concerto - The music by Poul Ruders, Concerto in Pieces features 65 musicians in the orchestra playing his composition.
The Rite of Spring
100th Anniversary - Celebrating the 100th anniversary Igor Stravinsky’s composition of The Rite of Spring, this work is set to the choreography of Glen Tetley’s ballet, Le Sacre du Printemps. Riots at the Premiere - During its premiere in 1913 in Paris, the music was so groundbreaking and the choreography was so controversial that it nearly evoked a riot on opening night. Powerful Music - With its percussive rhythms and dissonant harmonies, Stravinsky’s masterpiece is one of the most revolutionary musical pieces of the 20th century.
Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project Denver Debut - This will be the first time Light, a one act contemporary ballet in five movements will be performed in Denver. Inspiring Story- This ballet is inspired by the poignant journey of one Holocaust survivor and serves as a timely reminder of the importance of the protection of human rights. National Spotlight - When it premiered in 2005, Light brought national attention to choreographer Stephen Mills. His original choreography turns the spotlight on discrimination and explores the triumph of the human spirit.

LIGHT/THE HOLOCAUST & HUMANITY PROJECT March 29-31, 2013 Gates Concert Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts Concept/Choreography: Stephen Mills Set/Costume Design: Christopher McCollum Lighting Design: Tony Tucci Music: Steve Reich (Tehillim), Evelyn Glennie (Rhythm Song), Michael Gordon (Weather), Arvo Pärt (Tabula Rasa), Philip Glass (Tirol Concerto) Media Design: Exopolis Original production funded in part by a Ballet Austin Foundation Endowment through the generosity of Jennene and K. Ray Mashburn. Cast Caitlin Valentine-Ellis Lorita Travaglia Lesley Allred, Dana Benton, Morgan Buchanan, Cara Cooper, Klara Houdet, Tracy Jones, Asuka Sasaki, Christina Schifano, Meagan Swisher, Sally Turkel, Sharon Wehner Gregory DeSantis, Francisco Estevez, Jesse Marks, Christophor Moulton, Sean Omandam, Adam Still, Jeremy Studinski, Kevin Gaël Thomas, Dmitry Trubchanov, Luis Valdes, Ben Winegar Choreographer’s Note Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project is a story of survival. Situated during the catastrophic events of the Holocaust, this work strives to illustrate the courage, resilience, and sometimes pure luck required to endure and rebuild life after unimaginable and devastating loss. Past is present and not to be forgotten. As an artist whose practice is very much involved in the humanity within dance, approaching a story based in an important historical event was new to me. I am interested in how people relate to one another and feel that dance has the ability to express, in a metaphoric way, emotion that words cannot capture. Throughout my study of the Holocaust, I became fixated on memory and the ways in which people cope with disaster and loss. In my mind, I wonder what conversations survivors have with themselves over the nearly 70 years since the end of World War II. This concept is introduced with the image of a survivor who comforts her younger self and relives her story. Through the Biblical story of Adam and Eve, the circle of life begins. Civilizations develop; families and cultures evolve to include a pattern of daily life and valued traditions, like a wedding. However, change is imminent; the ground is shifting, and what is familiar slowly disappears. Certain populations are deemed to be inferior, and then targeted and isolated. They are degraded to the point of being perceived as non-human, and life or death is determined by powers outside of their control. People are treated as property and transported to camps. Overwhelming numbers do not survive the trip. Even within a prison, the circular nature of life continues. Acts of brutality, courage, defiance, and anger occur in captivity. Eventually, though, we all face death, and do so alone. However, the circle continues; lives and families are rebuilt. This is not every survivor’s story, but is the one I humbly seek to tell. The woman The work unfolds as part of an ongoing conversation held between the 19 year-old girl whose life was forever changed…and the woman she is today.
2 Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project • Colorado Ballet
Section I: Tree of Life/Family This section opens symbolically with original man and woman, Adam and Eve, and the tree of life; suggesting the roots of humanity and the branches of each succeeding generation. Civilization, families and cultures evolve to include a pattern of daily life and its valued traditions…one such example being the joy of a wedding. As this section ends, it is clear that the woman is beginning to feel the “ground shift beneath her feet.” Change is coming. Section II: Segregation and Marginalization This section explores the process through which those deemed “different” become exploited. What is familiar slowly starts to shift. People retreat from one another, beginning to socially isolate; to hide in hopes of survival. Section III: Humanity as property/Control through terror No longer seen as individuals, life or death is determined by powers outside of their control. People are treated as property and transported en mass via rail cars to camps. Many never survive the trip. Section IV: Coping inside the box Being kept in confinement with more than 20,000 people, one could felt a sense of being alone. What questions were prisoners/victims asking themselves about survival and death each day? How did their relationships develop in the camps? There were acts of kindness and rescue, but also acts of survival, frustration and anger. We are reminded that the circle of life is complex and that we enter and leave alone. Section V: Survival This final section represents the woman’s desire for the lessons from this experience to focus on the power of the human spirit to cling to hope and ultimately to survive. People left this atrocity and went on to create family, relationships and productive lives. The woman was liberated from Auschwitz as one of her family’s sole survivors.

COLORADO BALLET PURCHASES BUILDING IN DENVER’S ART DISTRICT ON SANTA FE
After leasing its current building for 20 years, Colorado Ballet purchased a building in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe in January. The professional Company and Academy will renovate the space at 1075 Santa Fe Drive and move sometime in 2014. “Colorado Ballet has taken the next step. Our new building will provide more rehearsal space and amenities for our artistic staff and dancers which will ensure the quality of our product on the stage.” said Gil Boggs, Colorado Ballet Artistic Director. “It was important that we continue our operations in Downtown Denver and we are thrilled to move to a location in the vibrant Santa Fe Arts District.” The Company will continue to perform at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and Newman Center for the Performing Arts and will present several guest performances throughout the Denver Metro Area each year. “We ended the last fiscal year in the black and had a record breaking year for The Nutcracker, so now is a great time for us to launch a campaign that will enable us to own our own space,” said Marie Belew Wheatley, Colorado Ballet Executive Director. “The new location will have more studio space for the Colorado Ballet Academy,” said Anne O’Connor, Director of Education. “The increased space will allow us to offer more classes for adults and children. The new building will also have more convenient student drop off.” For more information on the building and capital campaign, visit www.coloradoballet.org.
