FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I am pleased to welcome you to Colorado Ballet’s 53rd season performance of The Nutcracker! This dazzling spectacle of glittering snowflakes and shimmering sugarplums will transport you to the Land of Sweets. I hope the enchantment of our dancers and live music performed by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra inspires you during this magical time of year! If you joined us for our season opener Giselle, we thank you. In the spring, the magic continues with Cinderella, a classic fairy tale that demonstrates dreams can come true, especially with the help of a fairy godmother. With Prokofiev’s score played live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and extraordinary performances from our dancers, Cinderella will enchant audiences of all ages. Every year, so many people tell me that our spring repertory production is their favorite performance of our season. Our season closer, Ballet Director’s Choice includes some of our favorite contemporary ballets and a world premiere. This production features Traveling Alone, choreographed by Amy Seiwert; Edwaard Liang’s Feast of the Gods; and the world premiere of The Last Beat, choreographed by Sandra Brown. This three-part production combines classical with contemporary choreography and will appeal to all ballet audiences. We have other exciting news on the horizon. Some of you may have heard that for the first time in its 53 year history, Colorado Ballet will own its home. Earlier this year we purchased a building located at 11th and Santa Fe with the help of a bridge loan from one of our trustees. We plan to renovate the 100-year-old building and move in mid 2014. Our building will provide more rehearsal space and amenities for our artistic staff and dancers as well as a black box theater for small performances and events. The new location will also have more studio space for the Colorado Ballet Academy and the increased space will allow us to offer more classes for adults and children. We would love your support to keep this project moving. To find out how you can help Colorado Ballet move into the future, visit, coloradoballet.org/newhome. Thank you for spending part of your holiday season with Colorado Ballet. I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season! Gil Boggs Artistic Director

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Welcome to The Nutcracker! This holiday classic features choreography after Petipa and music by Tchaikovsky, performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. Our magical production is a tradition in many households and we still get goose bumps when the curtain rises on this holiday tale. As CoChairs, we are honored to be a part of Colorado Ballet’s ongoing momentum. Under the leadership of Gil Boggs and his artistic team, Colorado Ballet enhances the cultural life of our community by producing the highest quality dance in the region while bringing out the “dancer” in each of us. Through the Colorado Ballet Academy, we encourage the love of dance in students of every age. Children as young as three can enroll. And Academy students have the opportunity to audition for roles in several professional productions each year—including The Nutcracker. The Academy also offers a wide range of adult dance classes including ballet, pilates, jazz and tap. The Colorado Ballet Academy not only teaches dance, it encourages the love of dance in every student. Look for many of our Academy students on the stage today! Still, not all Coloradans have the opportunity to experience the magic of excellence in dance. That’s why the Colorado Ballet’s outreach department provides the opportunity for in-need students, teachers, family and individuals with disabilities to take dance classes and attend season performances. With your support, we impact nearly 60,000 individuals every year. We hope that you enjoy today’s performance and will consider a donation to Colorado Ballet to ensure the future of high quality dance and the cultural vibrancy of our state. Thank you for supporting Colorado Ballet! We look forward to seeing each of you at our spring production of Cinderella! Sincerely, Holly Baroway and Henny Lasley Board Co-Chairs

OFFICIAL SPONSORS OF COLORADO BALLET Colorado Ballet applauds its official sponsors of the 2013-2014 season

KEYBANK WELCOMES YOU When it comes to holiday traditions in our state, none is more iconic and magical than Colorado Ballet’s annual performance of The Nutcracker. For more than 50 years, our community has played host to one of the nation’s premiere presentations of The Nutcracker. Parents and grandparents who saw The Nutcracker as children now bring their families to celebrate the holidays. KeyBank is pleased to join Coloradans across our state who make a visit with Clara, the Nutcracker Prince, the Sugarplum Fairy, and all the magical characters of The Nutcracker a part of their annual holiday festivities. At KeyBank, we help our clients and communities thrive. A thriving community is one which values and supports cultural organizations. The arts inspire creativity in the young and imagination in the old. More than anything, though, they introduce us to diverse forms of expression, expand our understanding of other cultures, and connect us with the larger world. Colorado Ballet certainly does that, not just with The Nutcracker but year round. Besides its world-class performances each year, Colorado Ballet’s educational programs have touched more than half-a-million people throughout our state. That’s a record of success we can all champion. Thank you for being a part of the 53rd year of The Nutcracker. Happy Holidays! Tom Tulodzieski Regional President

THE NUTCRACKER November 30 - December 28, 2013 Ellie Caulkins Opera House

Based on Choreography by Martin Fredmann Additional Choreography by Sandra Brown Staged by Lorita Travaglia and Sandra Brown Music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Based on the Story by E.T.A. Hoffman Scenery and Costumes by Jose Varona Additional Costumes by Colorado Ballet Wardrobe Department Lighting Design by Todd Elmer Associate Lighting Designer Patrick “Red” Howard

Synopsis The curtain rises to reveal Herr Drosselmeyer in his workshop preparing for the party at the home of Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum. It’s their annual Christmas Eve Party. The magical and eccentric Herr Drosselmeyer has planned a special surprise for his beloved godchild, Clara Stahlbaum. He presents her with a wonderfully mysterious wooden Nutcracker. Clara is immediately taken with the gift. Clara’s brother Fritz is jealous and steals the Nutcracker from Clara. In the chaos of his teasing, Fritz accidentally breaks the Nutcracker. Herr Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and assures Clara that all will be well. The party ends and Clara, just before the stroke of midnight, returns to the darkened living room to check on her Nutcracker. She is frightened by large mice, but suddenly, Herr Drosselmeyer appears and the mice flee. Much to Clara’s amazement, Herr Drosselmeyer commands the Christmas tree to grow to such an enormous size that it pushes away the entire room. Next, he changes her little wooden toy into a life-size Nutcracker. The Nutcracker introduces himself and his soldiers to Clara. The mice suddenly reappear, and a vicious battle ensues. The soldiers seem to be winning, but the great Mouse King appears and the tide turns. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King fight, and just as the Mouse King is about to overpower the Nutcracker, Clara distracts him, giving the Nutcracker the chance to overcome the Mouse King. To Clara’s delight and surprise, the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome young prince, who takes her off on an enchanted journey. He takes her to the Land of the Snow, and then to the beautiful Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by dances from many lands. Clara and the Prince dance together surrounded by radiant flowers. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier then dance for Clara and the Prince. The Prince carries a sleeping Clara back to her home, where she awakens uncertain if her magical journey was a dream or reality. 2 The Nutcracker • Colorado Ballet

ABOUT THE SUGARPLUMS The Sugarplum program is a memorable experience for second grade girls and a long-standing Denver tradition. A season of fun, friendship, and ballet appreciation culminates with The Sugarplum Ball followed by an on-stage presentation at the Colorado Ballet’s magical performance of The Nutcracker. There are many activities for Sugarplums, including the mother-daughter tea, the fatherdaughter harvest party, and the holiday party. The Sugarplum Alum program continues as part of the Sugarplum program. During this second year, third grade girls attend The Sugarplum Ball and actually perform on stage in one of the Colorado Ballet’s performances of The Nutcracker. Only previous Sugarplums are eligible to participate in the Sugarplum Alum program. For more information, visit www.coloradoballetaux.org. 38 Colorado Ballet

Caring for our community because every day counts.

At Agape, we help our patients achieve the highest possible quality of life in the midst of illness through expert pain and symptom management and compassionate support. The idea of hospice care can be frightening, but it shouldn’t be. The number one comment we hear from patients and families is, “We wish we’d found you sooner.” Hospice care allows people to focus on what’s most important: friends, family and the gifts of the season.
