FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Colorado Ballet’s spectacular winter and spring productions! If you joined us for our season opener, Don Quixote, or our 59th annual production of the holiday classic The Nutcracker, we thank you. Colorado Ballet is extremely gratefully and excited to report that this season’s production of The Nutcracker brought in record breaking revenue for Colorado Ballet. It was the highest selling production in the company’s 59-year history. I want to thank everyone who has supported the ballet by purchasing tickets, making contributions and attending our events—you are a major part of our ongoing success. Peter Pan flies back to Denver for our first production of the decade. With choreography by Michael Pink and music by Philip Feeney, this ballet features the same artistic duo who created the acclaimed ballet Dracula, which Colorado audiences will recall from sold-out performances in fall of 2017. Peter Pan will take audiences on a high-flying adventure to Neverland where Peter Pan, Wendy, John and Michael experience pirates, Lost Boys, Captain Hook, an infamous crocodile and a bit of pixie dust as this brilliant story unfolds. Our March program, Tour de Force, will feature three dynamic contemporary ballets—Feast of the Gods by Edwaard Liang, Celts by Lila York and a world premiere, choreographed on our dancers, by Julia Adam. Choreographed in 2009, Feast of the Gods depicts a group of gypsies who, after traveling all day, set up camp for the night and celebrate with a feast. Our dancers are excited to perform the critically acclaimed ballet Celts. “Lila York’s Celts is an astonishing array of dance images of Ireland, a piece that is both profound and thrilling…” The Boston Globe. Continuing to bring innovative world premieres to Colorado, we couldn’t be happier to welcome prolific and esteemed choreographer Julia Adam to create a world premiere on our dancers specifically for this program. The 2019/2020 season will close with Ballet MasterWorks, presenting works that profoundly impacted the art form and remain central masterpieces of the 20th century ballet repertoire. Our program this season will include In The Upper Room by Twyla Tharp, Petite Mort by Jiří Kylián and Theme and Variations by George Balanchine. Experience this season finale and watch our dancers master some of the most inspiring and challenging repertoire, demonstrating their supreme artistry and deep love of the art form. It has been an honor to prepare and present these classic productions and exciting contemporary works this season. We believe in the importance of presenting a collection of full-length classical ballets, works by some of the greatest choreographers and the most unique world premieres. We invite you to join us again next season for our 60th Anniversary season in 2020/2021 as we continue to present diverse offerings that will delight and inspire you. Thank you for attending this Colorado Ballet performance. I know you will enjoy it and look forward to seeing you at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House again soon!

PETER PAN January 31 – February 9, 2020

Ellie Caulkins Opera House Direction and Choreography by Michael Pink Music by Philip Feeney Lighting Design by David Grill Lighting Adapted by Patrick “Red” Howard Scenic Design by Rick Graham Costume Design by Judanna Lynn Production Courtesy of Milwaukee Ballet Flying Effects provided by ZFX, Inc. – Shad Ramsey, Flying Director Dear Children, I came across this diary when I was in England. It tells the tale of Peter Pan, a story that will be passed on from generation to generation as long as there are those who believe in childhood innocence and the wonderful sense of adventure. Peter Pan is dedicated to my own darlings, Chloe, Max and Georgina. Onward to Neverland! Michael Pink From the Diary of Wendy Moira Angela Darling… March 25, 1941 Dear Diary, Today I saw Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens! As you know, we always play make-believe and I am Peter in our nursery games. John is a rather dastardly Captain Hook and little Michael is a really silly Tiger Lily. Father came home with an invitation to a very grand party. Mother seemed more concerned about Peter Pan, though. Does she really know who he is? March 26, 1941 Last night I dreamt that a magical fairy was flying around the nursery with Peter himself chasing her about! He sat on my bed until Mother and Nana chased him away. Oh, how I wish my dreams would never end! March 27, 1941 Sometimes I think Father is as mean as Captain Hook. Today when it was time for our medicine, he tricked Michael into taking his and then poured his own into Nana’s bowl. Then he got very angry at Nana and banished her from our nursery – he thinks she is “just a dog” but we know better. Poor Nana! I do not know if this was a dream or not but Peter came back into the nursery because I had to help him sew his shadow back on. I told him he may give me a kiss but instead he gave me an acorn necklace. Diary, I don’t think Peter even knows what a kiss really is! The most amazing thing happened next. Peter showed all of us how to fly and he’s taking us to Neverland! It 2 Peter Pan • Colorado Ballet

is just as he said, “second to the right and then straight on till morning!” If this really is a dream, I hope I never wake up. March 28, 1941 (I think…) In all the times we’ve played Neverland we always had Pirates led by Captain Hook, Tiger Lily and the Indian Braves - and it is just so in Neverland! Let’s see if I can recount all that has happened. Time seems so different in Neverland than it does at home… I suddenly had a most curious feeling of falling out of the sky – and indeed I had! The acorn necklace Peter gave me must have saved my life! Peter introduced us to the lost boys – these poor creatures need a mother and they seem to think I’m the one to do it. I don’t know if I’m ready for that yet. Peter has told me many stories. Did you know that he was the one who cut off Captain Hook’s hand and threw it to a crocodile? The crocodile not only swallowed the hand, but a clock too and that’s the only way Hook knows he’s coming! Peter took me to an enchanting mermaid lagoon. Peter is so charming and I feel butterflies in my stomach when I’m around him. Then the adventures really began… There were Pirates chasing the Indian Braves and Peter had to come to the rescue. He saved Tiger Lily, but I won’t bother with that. I’m not sure I like her. In fact there are lots of things here that need fixing in this home under the ground. For one, Peter and those boys need more discipline – they simply must take their medicine! I suppose I’ll try and be a mother to them – I read them a bedtime story and I do enjoy this sort of thing. It reminds me of home… Tiger Lily must have been outside all night because I heard the beat of Indian drums. Speaking of home, I decided it’s time we return before John and Michael forget all about it. I hope Peter will take his medicine when we go. Tinkerbell is going to help us find our way out, although I don’t know that we can trust her. We were just about to leave when the most horrid thing happened – Captain Hook captured John, Michael, the lost boys and me!

Perhaps March 29, 1941… Oh Diary! That dastardly Captain Hook took us captive to the Jolly Roger, his enormous pirate ship. Of course, John couldn’t have been more excited. Neverland seems to confuse what is real and what is makebelieve. Once aboard, Captain Hook asked me to read him a bedtime story – do none of these people have a mother here in Neverland?! That Hook must be the naughtiest child I’ve ever met! Suddenly his mood changed and he ordered John to walk the plank! Peter arrived to save the day. He dressed up like me thus fooling that cowardly Captain and made him walk the plank! What a skirmish!

It was definitely time for us to leave Neverland and we want to take the lost boys with us. How I wish Peter would come along, but he just doesn’t want to grow up. Thankfully when we got to the nursery Mother and Nana were there and you just can’t imagine where we found Father! I’ve never been so happy to be home but I hope I never ever forget Neverland and I hope Peter will come back to see me someday. Goodnight Diary. Love, Wendy Darling

This story is an adaption of the Peter Pan novel originally published in 1902 by J.M. Barrie and may contain cultural depictions that were common during that era.

AS ONE CHAPTER CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS

Chandra Kuykendall Retires After 22 Seasons

A

s this season comes to a close, a Colorado Ballet Principal Dancer who has called the company and Colorado Ballet Academy home for 31 years will take her final bow. Chandra Kuykendall will retire in April, 2020 and open a new chapter of her life, saying goodbye to the spotlight and a career that defined her existence for over three decades.

“Dance has not only enriched my life, dance has been my life,” states Chandra as she reflects on her career as a professional ballerina. “To be able to share that passion on stage has made me feel like I haven’t worked a day in the last 23 years.”

Chandra Kuykendall and Artists of Colorado Ballet in Don Quixote 2019 by Mike Watson

Originally from Parker, Colorado, Chandra fell in love with ballet as a child and started taking lessons from a local teacher at the age of six. She progressed quickly, and at the age of eight her teacher recommended that she train in a more professional setting. With her parents’ full support and a hunger to learn, Chandra began training at Colorado Ballet Academy. After nine years of training, she graduated from the Academy and immediately joined the professional company in 1997. Early in her career, she spent one season dancing in Germany with the Leipzig Ballet, after which she returned to Colorado Ballet where she continued to develop and refine her talents over several seasons, dancing numerous principal roles. In recognition of her dancing, dedication and experience, Colorado Ballet promoted Chandra to principal dancer in 2007. This year is her 22nd season dancing professionally with the Company. “To me Chandra emulates everything that a dancer should be,” states Ballet Mistress and former Colorado Ballet Principal Dancer Maria Mosina, who has witnessed her entire career. “Chandra brings everything to her craft including beauty, grace, dedication, a warrior spirit, connection, power, sharing and support.” She has inspired many other dancers throughout their careers and countless other dancers look up to her. “We are sad to see Chandra retire,” states Artistic Director Gil Boggs. “She has been a strong leader in the company for many seasons. Her artistry is very moving and it’s been a joy to be a part of her journey as a professional dancer.”

“I could not have had the career I did without the love and support of my family,” states Chandra. Not only have her parents supported her pursuits as a dancer, but her husband, Rob Kuykendall, whom she met at Colorado Ballet, and their two children, Asher (age 10) and Levi (age 1) also support her in her unique career as a professional ballerina. Her son Asher is very proud of his mom and inspired by the passion and commitment she exemplifies. He aspires to follow a similar path of excellence in pursuit of his passion, gymnastics. “Performing is why we are in this profession,” states Chandra. “When I perform, I transform and all the nerves go away. Then I get to go out on the stage and be in front of the audience, sharing my passion. It is just simply the best feeling and definitely what I will miss the most. Performing has been my life for so long that it’s hard to let it go, but at the same time I feel like there’s a whole other life waiting for me, and I’m so excited for what the future holds.” Following her retirement, Chandra looks forward to having more time to spend with her children and taking on a larger role at the dance studio that she and her husband own in Centennial.

“My proudest time at Colorado Ballet is right now,” stated Chandra. “As a child and a young dancer growing up, I had so many dreams. I couldn’t be luckier because I have exceeded all of those dreams. My best advice to the younger generation is to believe in yourself, focus on your strength and work on your weaknesses. I tell my boys to always follow their dreams. While I’m sad to see this chapter come to a close, I’m equally excited for the future and the next stage. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and cheered me on over the past three decades. Thank you to all of my colleagues, coaches, teachers, friends and a huge thank you to my family for always being there for me and supporting me throughout this demanding career. I love you all and can’t wait to see what the next chapter has in store.” Colorado Ballet wishes Chandra and her family all the best in their next adventure and thanks her for sharing her extraordinary artistry with Colorado audiences for 22 seasons. FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE

COLORADO BALLET’S ASSEMBLY PROGRAM TOUCHES LIVES THROUGHOUT COLORADO This season, for the first time, the Education and Community Engagement team at Colorado Ballet took the company’s From the Page to the Stage school assembly program on the road to Gunnison and Salida, Colorado. The programs were met with resounding acclaim. Students and teachers alike left with a renewed sense of inspiration and expressed their deep gratitude. Seeing the impact of these performances energized Colorado Ballet’s dancers and staff.

“Being in a mountain town, many students are not able to experience shows like musicals or ballets... this was a great way to showcase the ballet. Many of our students want to dance or do dance locally, but letting them see what they can be was amazing. We had ballerinas dancing for days!” In pursuit of the company’s mission to make dance accessible to everyone, this season marks the first time the company offers two sensory friendly performances in the Black Box Theatre at the ballet’s home, The Armstrong Center for Dance. These performances have sold out with many enthusiastic parents expressing their gratitude for an adaptive program that enables their children to experience the joy of seeing professional ballet performed live in an inclusive environment. From the Page to the Stage has grown this year from 18 to 24 performances, now reaching more than 7,000 students and adults, with performances in 10 Colorado counties.

“thank you for the opportunity to expose our group to ballet! Some would not be able to attend a full performance without a great deal of difficulty. They love music and dance!” Thank you to all Colorado Ballet donors and patrons whose contributions make these programs possible.
