FROM THE DIRECTORS Welcome to the first production of Colorado Ballet’s 53rd year! Throughout this season, the Company will demonstrate its wide range of the art form by moving from Giselle, a classic ballet, to the kid-friendly Cinderella, and close with the innovative programming of Ballet Director’s Choice. It is no secret that Giselle is my favorite ballet. Giselle is the epitome of a classical ballet, demonstrating love, betrayal, death and forgiveness. I hope you enjoy one of the most hauntingly beautiful ballets of all time, with live music performed by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. After Giselle, I encourage you to join us for a dazzling spectacle of glittering snowflakes and shimmering sugarplums in The Nutcracker. Come take a journey to the Land of Sweets with Colorado Ballet’s dancers and Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary arrangement performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. In the spring, we will present a ballet for all ages, Cinderella. With Prokofiev’s enchanting score played live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra, Cinderella is a performance for all the senses. We hope dancers of all ages enjoy this classic fairy tale sprinkled with humor that demonstrates dreams can come true. In March, we close with some of our favorite contemporary ballets and a world premiere in Ballet Director’s Choice. This production features Traveling Alone, choreoraphed by Amy Seiwert; Edwaard Liang’s Feast of the Gods; and the world premiere of The Last Beat, choreographed by Sandra Brown. This three-part production that combines classical with contemporary choreography will appeal to regular ballet-goers as well as a younger crowd who might not be as familiar with the art of dance. Every year, so many people tell me that this is their favorite performance of our season. I hope you enjoy the dancing and musical talent of our performers. Thank you for attending Giselle and for supporting Colorado Ballet! Gil Boggs Artistic Director

8 Colorado Ballet

Thank you for joining Colorado Ballet for the start of our new season! Our talented dancers and musicians are thrilled to bring you one of the most beautiful ballets of all time, Giselle. I hope you enjoy this classic love story. Last season, Gil Boggs, the dancers and our musicians took Colorado Ballet to new heights with some of the most challenging dance and music productions ever created. Our company will continue to bring that momentum to all of our productions this season. In 2013-2014, Colorado Ballet will present three beloved storybook ballets: Giselle, The Nutcracker and Cinderella. In the spring, our dancers will demonstrate their dancing talent in Ballet Director’s Choice, featuring Amy Seiwert’s Traveling Alone, Edwaard Liang’s Feast of the Gods and a world premiere ballet. Along with last year’s successful season that included a record-breaking production of The Nutcracker, we purchased a building located at 11th and Santa Fe with the help of a bridge loan from Colorado Ballet Trustee Joanne PosnerMayer. We plan to renovate the 100-year-old building and move sometime in 2014. Our building will provide more rehearsal space and amenities for our artistic staff and dancers as well as a black box theater for small performances and events. The new location will also have more studio space for the Colorado Ballet Academy and the increased space will allow us to offer more classes for adults and children. Anchoring the north end of Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, our new building is located in a thriving cultural neighborhood. Our new location will increase awareness about the Company, Academy and our nationally renowned education and outreach programs. For the first time in its 53 year history, Colorado Ballet will own its home. For more information on the capital campaign, read the article about the new building in the Giselle program or visit coloradoballet.org/newhome. I hope that you enjoy Giselle and all of the productions during this exciting year for Colorado Ballet! Marie Belew Wheatley Executive Director

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Welcome to Giselle! As we begin our 53rd season, the Colorado Ballet Board of Trustees is proud to bring you performances that include technically-challenging classical ballet and innovative contemporary premieres. As incoming Co-Chairs, we are honored to be a part of Colorado Ballet’s ongoing momentum. Under the leadership of Gil Boggs and his artistic team, Colorado Ballet enhances the cultural life of our community by producing the highest quality dance in the region while bringing out the “dancer” in each of us. Through the Colorado Ballet Academy, we encourage the love of dance in students of every age. Children as young as three can enroll. And Academy students have the opportunity to audition for roles in several professional productions each year—including The Nutcracker. The Academy also offers a wide range of adult dance classes including ballet, pilates, jazz, tap and hip hop. The Colorado Ballet Academy not only teaches dance, it encourages the love of dance in every student. Still, not all Coloradans have the opportunity to experience the magic of excellence in dance. That’s why the Colorado Ballet’s outreach department provides the opportunity for in-need students, teachers, family and individuals with disabilities to take dance classes and attend season performances. With your support, we impact nearly 60,000 individuals every year. We hope that you enjoy today’s performance and will consider a donation to Colorado Ballet to ensure the future of high quality dance and the cultural vibrancy of our state. Thank you for supporting Colorado Ballet! We look forward to seeing each of you throughout our exciting season. Sincerely, Holly Baroway and Henny Lasley Board Co-Chairs

GISELLE October 4-13, 2013 Ellie Caulkins Opera House Choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot As revised by Marius Petipa Music by Adolphe Adam Staged by Gil Boggs, Sandra Brown and Lorita Travaglia Scenery and Costumes Courtesy of American Ballet Theatre Lighting by Todd Elmer Lighting Assistant Patrick “Red” Howard

Synopsis Act I Giselle is set in the vineyard country bordering the Rhine River. Hilarion, the village huntsman and a gamekeeper to the court, returns from his early morning chores and pauses before a neighboring cottage, the home of Giselle, with whom he is in love. Villagers pass by on their way to the vineyards, where they will harvest the last of the grapes before the Wine Festival. Count Albrecht arrives dressed as a peasant with his squire. This peasant, known to the villagers as Loys, excuses himself from joining the grape pickers so that he can be alone with Giselle. He swears his eternal love for her and with daisy petals she wonders whether “he loves me, he loves me not.” When it appears the answer is “not,” she throws the flower away. But Loys recovers it and secretly removes one petal, indicating to Giselle that “he loves me” is the final answer. Hilarion interrupts, protesting that he, and not Loys, truly loves Giselle. A quarrel ensues and Hilarion’s suspicions are raised as Loys reaches for a sword. The villagers return and Giselle invites them to join in a dance to celebrate the harvest. Her mother, Berthe, interrupts to remind Giselle that she should not endanger her weak heart with dancing. Berthe is stuck with a momentary hallucination of her daughter in death. She sees her as a Wili, a restless spirit who has died because her love was unrequited. A hunting horn is heard in the distance which Loys recognizes as that of the Duke of Courland. As he hastily departs, Hilarion breaks into his cottage. The Duke’s hunting party arrives and his beautiful daughter, Bathilde, rewards Giselle with a necklace when she learns they are both engaged to be married. After the hunting party moves on, Hilarion emerges from Loys’ cottage with a hunting horn and sword, further evidence that the supposed peasant is, in fact, a nobleman. The villagers return and proclaim Giselle the Queen of the Wine Festival. Hilarion interrupts to denounce Loys as an imposter. When Loys denies the charges and threatens the gamekeeper with the sword, Hilarion blows the hunting horn, a signal for the Duke to return. Loys is exposed when Bathilde reveals that he is her fiancé, Count Albrecht. Giselle’s fragile heart cannot withstand the revelation of Loys’ duplicity. In the ensuing moments, her mind becomes unhinged and she dies of a broken heart, her great love unrequited. Act II The setting is a clearing in the forest near Giselle’s grave at midnight. Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, appears and the Wilis are summoned to attend the ceremonies which will initiate Giselle into their sisterhood. The Wilis are vengeful beings who in life suffered unrequited love and are destined to roam the earth from midnight to dawn, trapping any male who enters their domain and forcing him to dance to death. Hilarion, in search of Giselle, meets his death at their hands. Albrecht arrives to leave flowers on Giselle’s grave. The Wilis appear from the shadows, trapping Albrecht, but Giselle resolves to protect him. She dances with him until dawn arrives, the time at which the Wilis lose their power. Giselle vanishes from his arms, back into her grave. Albrecht is spared death.
