FESTIVAL FELLOWS The Festival Fellows program seeks to support the Sphinx Organization’s goal of addressing “the social issue of underrepresentation of people of color in classical music.” Through the Colorado Music Festival and Center for Musical Arts’ mission to provide access to the world’s best performance and educational opportunities, this program serves to advance the Fellows’ experience and knowledge within a broad spectrum of performance and educational opportunities. The Ivalas Quartet was selected to serve as the first Fellows class in the 2021 season. Founded in Ann Arbor in 2016, the Ivalas Quartet is composed of violinists Reuben Kebede and Tiana Butts, violist Aimée McAnulty, and cellist Pedro Sánchez. Currently the quartet serves as the Graduate Quartet in residence at The University of Colorado – Boulder where they study under the renowned Takács Quartet. In January 2020 they had their Carnegie Hall debut when they participated as a young artist quartet at the 2020 Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) conference in NYC. Maintaining their commitment to community engagement, Ivalas has also represented the Sphinx Organization playing for students in Flint and the Metro Detroit area. The quartet has been awarded first prize in the 2019 WDAV Young Artists Chamber Music Competition as well as first prize in the 2018 Briggs Chamber Music Competition and was named a semifinalist group at both the M-Prize competition and Concert Artists Guild competition in New York. Ivalas has been a fellowship quartet at festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival and School, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Colorado Music Festival, Crested Butte Music Festival and the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival. The Ivalas Quartet will be present for the six-week Festival and will receive coaching from illustrious guest chamber musicians such as the Juilliard String Quartet, St. Lawrence Quartet, Brooklyn Rider, and from Peter Oundjian, Festival music director and former principal violinist of the famed Tokyo String Quartet. The Ivalas Quartet will perform one free and open to the public concert at the culmination of their Festival residence, scheduled for July 31 at the Boulder Bandshell. Additional performances will be scheduled throughout the Festival period. The Festival Fellows program is sponsored by the Sei Solo Foundation.
