Join music director Brett Mitchell and former NASA astronaut Richard Hieb, who will act as narrator, while the orchestra performs works by Mason Bates, James Beckel, and John Williams — including music from Star Wars, E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind — accompanied by stunning visuals and archival footage from the moon landing. We’ll also screen the sixth installment of the Harry Potter franchise with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince™ in Concert from August 2-4. BRETT MITCHELL, music director

Hailed for presenting engaging, in-depth explorations of thoughtfully curated programs, Brett Mitchell began his tenure as Music Director of the Colorado Symphony in July 2017. Prior to this appointment, he served as the orchestra’s Music Director Designate during the 2016/17 season. He leads the orchestra in ten classical subscription weeks per season as well as a wide variety special programs featuring such guest artists as Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, and Itzhak Perlman.
Mitchell is also in consistent demand as a guest conductor. Highlights of his 2018/19 season include subscription debuts with the Minnesota Orchestra and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and return appearances with the orchestras of Cleveland, Dallas, and Indianapolis. Other upcoming and recent guest engagements include the Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, National, Oregon, and San Antonio symphonies, the Grant Park Festival Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Mitchell also regularly collaborates with the world’s leading soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Rudolf Buchbinder, Kirill Gerstein, James Ehnes, Augustin Hadelich, Leila Josefowicz, and Alisa Weilerstein. From 2013 to 2017, Mitchell served on the conducting staff of The Cleveland Orchestra. He joined the orchestra as Assistant Conductor in 2013, and was promoted to Associate Conductor in 2015, becoming the first person to hold that title in over three decades and only the fifth in the orchestra’s hundred-year history. In these roles, he led the orchestra in several dozen concerts each season at Severance Hall, Blossom Music Center, and on tour. From 2007 to 2011, Mitchell led over one hundred performances as Assistant Conductor of the Houston Symphony. He also held Assistant Conductor posts with the Orchestre National de France, where he worked under Kurt Masur from 2006 to 2009, and the Castleton Festival, where he worked under Lorin Maazel in 2009 and 2010. In 2015, Mitchell completed a highly successful five-year appointment as Music Director of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra. Born in Seattle in 1979, Mitchell holds degrees in conducting from the University of Texas at Austin and composition from Western Washington University, which selected him as its Young Alumnus of the Year in 2014. He also studied at the National Conducting Institute, and was selected by Kurt Masur as a recipient of the inaugural American Friends of the Mendelssohn Foundation Scholarship. CHRISTOPHER DRAGON, resident conductor Australian conductor Christopher Dragon is in his fifth season with the Colorado Symphony. For three years he previously held the position of Assistant Conductor with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, which gave him the opportunity to work closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch. Dragon works regularly in Australia and has guest conducted the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. His 2015 debut performance at the Sydney Opera House with Josh Pyke and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was released on album by ABC Music and won an ARIA the following year. Dragon’s international guest conducting includes the Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted at numerous festivals including the Breckenridge and Bangalow Music Festivals, with both resulting in immediate re-invitations. At the beginning of 2016 Dragon conducted Wynton Marsalis’ Swing Symphony as part of the Perth International Arts Festival alongside Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra. Dragon began his conducting studies in 2011 and was a member of the prestigious Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program in Australia under the guidance of course director Christopher Seaman. He has also studied with numerous distinguished conductors including Leonid Grin, Paavo and Neeme Järvi at the Järvi Summer Festival, Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival, and conducting pedagogue Jorma Panula.

BERTIE BAIGENT, assistant conductor British-born Bertie Baigent is rapidly building an international reputation as an exciting and dynamic conductor-composer. He is the musical director of the Waterperry Opera Festival, the London Young Sinfonia, and in various contexts has conducted the WDR Sinfonieorchester, the Gürzenich-Orchester, the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, the Britten Sinfonia, the London Sinfonietta, the Orchestre National de Lille, and the Orchestre de Picardie. Baigent has assisted conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, and Jac van Steen, and has participated in masterclasses with Martyn Brabbins, Pierre-André Valade, Harald Jers, and others. In 2017 he was awarded the Royal Academy of Music’s Sir Henry Wood Scholarship and Ernest Read Conducting Prize, and participated in the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis. Also at home in the world of opera, recent engagements have included Così fan tutte at the Bedford Park Festival and the world premiere of Nero Monologues for Opera in the City; Baigent has also worked with Shadwell Opera, Helios Opera, OperaUpClose, and will conduct at Hampstead Garden Opera and Waterperry Opera Festival in the 2018–19 season. New music is particularly important to Baigent, with past and forthcoming collaborations including those with the London Sinfonietta, the Phaedra Ensemble, and 4|12 Collective. Baigent’s compositions have been widely performed by artists such as the Aurora Orchestra, the Bath Philharmonia, the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral, and the viol consort Fretwork, and have been heard in venues such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Royal Festival Hall. He has been awarded prizes and commissions by organisations including the Royal Philharmonic Society, the BBC, and the National Centre for Early Music. His works have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, and other European radio stations, and are published by Stainer & Bell. Baigent is a prize-winning Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, and trained as a cellist and pianist before focusing on conducting and composition. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a double first in 2016, and completed an MA in conducting with Sian Edwards at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

ANDREW TYSON, piano Hailed by BBC Radio 3 as “a real poet of the piano,” Andrew Tyson is emerging as a distinctive and important new musical voice. In summer 2015, he was awarded First Prize at the Géza Anda Competition in Zürich, as well as the Mozart and Audience Prizes. These victories have resulted in numerous performances throughout Europe under the auspices of the Géza Anda Foundation. Tyson is a laureate of the Leeds International Piano Competition where he won the new Terence Judd-Hallé Orchestra Prize, awarded by the orchestra and conductor Sir Mark Elder with whom he enjoys an ongoing relationship. With concerto performances taking him across North America and Europe and further afield, Tyson has performed with orchestras from North Carolina Symphony and Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Alice Tully Hall, to SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Musikkollegium Winterthur and National Orchestra of Belgium under Marin Alsop. Andrew’s two recital discs have been issued on the Alpha Classics label. His debut disc comprises the complete Chopin Preludes while his second album released in March 2017 features works by Scriabin and Ravel. As winner of Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 2011, Tyson was awarded YCA’s Paul A. Fish Memorial Prize and the John Browning Memorial Prize and following that he received an Avery Fisher Career Grant. After early studies with Thomas Otten, he attended Curtis Institute of Music where he worked with Claude Frank. Andrew later studied with Robert McDonald earning his Master’s degree and Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School, winning the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition and receiving the Arthur Rubinstein Prize in Piano.

SASHA COOKE, mezzo-soprano Two-time GRAMMY Award-winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke has been called a “luminous standout” (New York Times) and “equal parts poise, radiance and elegant directness” (Opera News). Ms. Cooke is sought after by the world’s leading orchestras, opera companies, and chamber music ensembles for her versatile repertoire and commitment to new music. The 2019/20 season brings many returns including appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, and the New York Philharmonic for a tour of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony. On the operatic stage, she appears twice with the San Francisco Opera returning to the title role in Hansel and Gretel and Laurene Jobs in Mason Bates’ The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, a role she created in 2017 at Santa Fe Opera. As artist in residence with the San Francisco Symphony her work will encompass concerts with the orchestra, educational events, chamber music performances, as well as a recital in Davies Hall. A dedicated recitalist, Ms. Cooke was presented by Young Concert Artists in her widely acclaimed New York and Washington debuts at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall and the Kennedy Center. A graduate of Rice University and The Juilliard School, Sasha Cooke also attended the Music Academy of the West, the Aspen Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Music Institute, the Wolf Trap Foundation, the Marlboro Music Festival, the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, and Seattle Opera and Central City Opera’s Young Artist Training Programs. She lives near Houston, TX with daughters Evelyn and Julia and husband baritone Kelly Markgraf.
RICHARD J. HIEB (RICK), Astronaut (Retired), narrator Richard (Rick) Hieb was selected as a NASA astronaut in June 1985 and flew on STS-39 in 1991, STS-49 in 1992, and STS-65 in 1994. He has logged more than 750 hours in space, including more than 17 hours of extravehicular activity (spacewalk). Hieb began his career as an aerospace engineer with NASA, working in Mission Operations. He was in Mission Control for the first Space Shuttle launch in 1981, and was involved in many shuttle missions in various roles, becoming an expert in rendezvous and satellite deploy and retrieve missions. For most people, his most wellknown flight was the maiden voyage of Endeavour. The 1992 Endeavour flight was a satellite rescue mission involving a number of high profile spacewalks, culminating in the first and only three person spacewalk (which held the record for longest spacewalk for over ten years) where Rick and colleagues captured a 9000 pound satellite in spacesuit gloved hands, next attaching the satellite to a booster rocket, and sending it safely on its way to intended orbit. In 1995 Rick left NASA to enter private industry, spending 20 years as an aerospace executive. He is currently a Scholar in Residence instructor at the University of Colorado in Boulder, helping develop the next generation of engineering talent. Hieb received a Bachelor of Arts degree in math and physics from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, in 1977 and a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1979.

MARISSA RUDD, vocalist Marissa Rudd is glad to return to the Colorado Symphony’s Tribute to Comic-Con. Originally from Milwaukee, WI she obtained her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Colorado State University under the vocal instruction of Dr. John Seesholtz. She has studied with world renowned singers, including: Nicole Cabell, George Shirley, Michelle DeYoung, Jennifer Black, and more. Representative credits include: Dreamgirls (Deena), Ragtime (Sarah), Tarzan (Jane), Fantasticks (Luisa), Sister Act (Deloris), and Mary Poppins (Mrs. Corry). This fall, Marissa will begin studies for her Masters of Music degree at New York University.

JUSTIN FREER , president/founder/producer, CineConcerts American composer/conductor JUSTIN FREER was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. He has established himself as one of the West Coast’s most exciting musical voices and is a highly sought-after conductor and producer of film music concerts around the world. Freer began his formal studies on trumpet, but quickly turned to piano and composition, composing his first work at eleven and giving his professional conducting debut at sixteen. Continually composing for various different mediums, he has written music for world-renowned trumpeters Doc Severinson and Jens Lindemann and continues to be in demand as a composer and conductor for everything from orchestral literature to chamber music around the world. He has served as composer for several independent films and has written motion picture advertising music for some of 20th Century Fox Studios’ biggest campaigns including Avatar, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Aliens in the Attic. As a conductor Freer has appeared with some of the most well known orchestras in the world including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is also one of the only conductors to have ever conducted in both the ancient Colosseum and Circus Maximus in Rome. Renowned wind conductor and Oxford Round Table Scholar Dr. Rikard Hansen has noted that, “In totality, Freer’s exploration in musical sound evoke moments of highly charged drama, alarming strife and serene reflection.” Freer has been recognized with numerous grants and awards from organizations including ASCAP, BMI, the Society of Composers and Lyricists and the Henry Mancini Estate. He is the Founder and President of CineConcerts, a company dedicated to the preservation and concert presentation of film, curating and conducting hundreds of full length music score performances live with film for such wide ranging titles as Gladiator, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, It’s A Wonderful Life, Rudy and the entire Harry Potter Film Franchise. Mr. Freer earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music Composition from UCLA, where his principal composition teachers included Paul Chihara and Ian Krouse. In addition, he was mentored by legendary composer/conductor Jerry Goldsmith. 22

BRADY BEAUBIEN, co-founder/producer A Stanford graduate and All-American Athlete, Beaubien studied cognitive neuroscience before founding Interlace Media – an award winning motion graphics company. Interlace is a premiere CG animation and creative agency for feature films. They have defined the global campaigns of over 100 major Hollywood movies, including Avatar, X-Men, Rio, Ice Age, and Die Hard franchises. Beaubien co-founded CineConcerts, a company dedicating to reinventing the experience of theatrical presentation and orchestral music. He is currently producing Gladiator Live, The Godfather Live, DreamWorks Animation in Concert, It’s a Wonderful Life, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, and The Harry Potter Film Concert Series. He had spearheaded Cineconcerts invention of new genres and its creative presentations of cherished film and television content, including writing Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, a project that celebrates 50 years of iconic material. He works to ensure Cineconcerts inspires a return to communal entertainment and continues to offer modern audiences and the worlds youth a chance to re-connect with concert halls and local orchestras. As a designer Beaubien co-designed Matsuhisa Paris at the Le Royal Monceau-Raffles and designed the Citrus building on Melrose Ave. This new architectural addition to the Hollywood cityscape represents a commitment to the metropolitan and interconnected providence of Los Angeles. At The Citrus, advanced materials and technology merge with wood, concrete and glass in an organic and modernist design. Mr. Beaubien has partnered with award winning sushi chef, Nobu Matsuhisa, to bring his new restaurant concept - Umeda - into the building. Mr. Beaubien also designed the restaurant.

NICHOLAS HOOPER, composer Nicholas Hooper is one of Europe’s leading composers, having written and produced music for over 250 films, dramas and documentaries since 1990. He has developed a reputation for producing music that is original, inspiring and always colourful. His scores have received several major accolades. In 2004 he won the BAFTA for Best Original Score for The Young Visiters as well as being nominated for State of Play in the same year. Nicholas was nominated for a 2006 BAFTA for his score to The Girl In The Café, and prior to this was BAFTA nominated for The Way We Live Now. In 1998 he won the coveted Golden Panda Award for Land of the Tiger, a major BBC documentary series on India. The following year he won again (having been nominated for three separate scores), making him the first composer to win the award consecutively. He has received many other accolades for his feature films including the period feature The Heart Of Me, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Williams, and The Tichbourne Claimant (a quote from Variety: “Nicholas Hooper’s alert symphonic score rates a major bow, adding shape and atmosphere to the labyrinthine tale”). Nicholas scored Philip Martin’s feature, Einstein and Eddington, starring David Tennant as Sir Arthur Eddington and Andy Serkis as Albert Einstein for Company Pictures/HBO, and Belonging for BBC Wales Drama. He also scored Enid Blyton for Carnival/BBC, Mo Mowlam for C4, and Yes Virginia, a CBS animated film for Christmas 2009. Nicholas has received great critical acclaim for his stunning scores to both Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for Warner Bros, (“Let there be no doubt - Hooper’s reputation is cemented with this work, and his career just shifted gears.” Daniel Champion, Music from the Movies, July 2007), and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, nominated for a 2010 Grammy for Best Film Score. He most recently completed recording two wonderful scores to the Walt Disney Pictures feature releases, African Cats and Chimpanzee.
