For our first full season together, we’re delighted to present a slate of magnificent and diverse works across a host of musical genres led by our incredible orchestra. And I couldn’t be more excited to kick things off on September 10 with the return of a legend and friend, Itzhak Perlman, for an evening featuring many of the greatest film scores ever written for violin. I hope you’ll join me for a spectacular Classics season opener featuring Gershwin’s RhapsodyinBlue and Rachmaninoff’s SymphonicDances in September. This season, I’ll also be on the podium leading performances featuring Beethoven’s Third Symphony; a special weekend mini festival we’re calling Mozart & Now which features three unique performances contrasting the music of Mozart with four of today’s brightest composers; and we’ll conclude our Classics season in May with Stravinsky’s groundbreaking The Rite ofSpring. I’m also particularly looking forward to late March when I’ll be conducting one of the most stunning works ever composed, Brahms’ A German Requiem featuring the Colorado Symphony Chorus. This is an exciting time for our orchestra, which has forged an international reputation for creativity, imagination, and outside the box thinking that has the Colorado Symphony poised to become one of the preeminent 21st century orchestras. Of course, this season will be no exception as we debut our Imagination Artist Series with RZA, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, and Nathaniel Rateliff, featuring curated orchestral programs that will showcase three unique artistic visions, all debuting exclusively for Colorado Symphony audiences. On behalf of our musicians, staff, and the Board of Trustees, thank you for your continued support. We have a spectacular season ahead featuring some of the very best symphonic music ever composed and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.

Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER? We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders. Updates, cancelations, or changes will be posted on coloradosymphony.org and on the event page for the concert.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP?

During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE?

Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits! Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

Conductors possess an unmistakable magnetism, captivating audiences through movements and gestures ranging from calm and restrained to wild and boisterous. But behind each unique gesture resides vital meaning, conveying tempo, style, and instruction to the musicians on stage while interpreting the composer’s intentions from hundreds of notes on a page. It’s a daunting undertaking that requires leadership, talent, charisma, and a penchant for the dramatic.

For the Colorado Symphony’s new Principal Conductor, Peter Oundjian, the allure of the podium was present even from an early age.

It was at Julliard in 1976 that he got his first burst of confidence during an encounter with the legendary Herbert von Karajan, longtime principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. At a master class that year, the eminent maestro asked Oundjian to conduct, unprepared, a Brahms symphonic movement without a score.

“I was studying conducting at Juilliard, but I wasn’t one of the five conducting majors; violin was my major. I was concertmaster, and one day Karajan (who was briefly in residence) came in and watched us doing our thing, which included me playing the solos from the Brahms First Symphony. The next day he asked me [putting on a stern German accent], ‘Do you conduct?’ I had no idea why he would be asking me, but I didn’t want to be dishonest so I said, ‘Yes I’m studying conducting, actually.’ He said, ‘Oh, very good. Then you will conduct later.’ I nearly had a heart attack because traditionally there’s nothing the music students enjoyed more than making the conducting students look bad.”

“I was at a little school in England which had a very good choir and the first time I realized what a conductor could do was when Benjamin Britten came into my school choir room to audition us,” said Oundjian. “We were singing songs from Britten's Friday Afternoons; we’d worked hard on them and our choir master was very good for a school choir master but he wasn’t Benjamin Britten. And when Britten came in and started to cajole us and move in his way and share his musical energy with us, it was unrecognizable the way we sounded and I was really struck by that.”

With a career spanning more than 40 years, Oundjian has been celebrated in the US and abroad for his musicality, commitment to mentoring young musicians, and an engaging charisma that instantly puts musicians, students, and audiences at ease. But despite Britten’s early impact and the undeniable draw of the podium, his first love was the violin and his skill with the instrument took him all the way to Julliard to continue his studies. Yet he couldn’t escape the lure of the podium

“Well, the moment came and everyone was there: Christoph Eschenbach, Seiji Ozawa, the head of Deutsche Grammophon, the head of Columbia Records, the president of Juilliard.

Shortly following the conclusion of his studies, Oundjian was named first violinist for the renowned Tokyo String Quartet in 1981. For 14 years, he toured and recorded extensively with the group until a repetitive stress injury began to affect his left hand.

“I stood up. He was three feet from me, staring at me and covering up the music! He said, ‘Don’t look. You know it. You know it,’ which was hardly true. So, I conducted and thankfully they played beautifully, as if he were conducting. Afterward, people were joking, saying I was going to give up the violin because Karajan had said how good I was.”

They all thought this was going to be the moment when the great maestro showed us all how it was done. I was the only one who knew what he was planning, and I couldn’t believe it. He turned to the audience and said, ‘The concertmaster will now conduct.’

Karajan’s exercise was no doubt initiated to prove a larger point about conducting, yet it was Karajan who ended up being impressed with the result. “He complimented my hands -‘You have very natural hands,’” Oundjian recalls. “That doesn’t leave you. When someone like Karajan says that, you don’t forget it. Years later when my hand started to get bad, I looked back on that experience and it had great value for me.”

“One of my first concerts with the Colorado Symphony, I conducted Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Very often when you’re playing or conducting, you look back after a performance and think perhaps there was something we could have done collectively to make that more magical. We always want it to be better than what we just did. And this was one of those rare moments that I remember that was so exquisitely beautiful, the sound and feeling and everything. The musicianship that was coming out of every single musician and all of them as a unit was very moving. I’m not a crier on stage but I teared up during that performance and I never forgot that.”

It took a long time to come on severely. By 1993 it was really affecting me.” Oundjian eventually discovered he suffered from focal dystonia, a disorder affecting the fine motor skills vital to a professional musician.

“By my late 30’s I was not at all happy playing the violin and so I just felt that I was being directed to do this, to take this new path.”

Since that initial stint with the orchestra, Colorado Symphony audiences have become well acquainted with Oundjian, who has been a frequent collaborator over the last two decades. He’s also garnered significant acclaim internationally.

It was during that time that he had his first experiences with the Colorado Symphony, joining the orchestra as Principal Guest Conductor, a role he held from 2003-2006. During that period and in the intervening years since, Denver was never far from his mind.

“You are unlikely to be a polished conductor in just a few years,” he says. However, with a renewed sense of purpose, Oundjian managed to master the new trade. After a string of successful guest appearances worldwide, the Nieuw Sinfonietta in Amsterdam hired him as Artistic Director in 1998. In 2003, he stepped down from that post to become music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2004/05, a rare opportunity to conduct in the city where he was born.

His 14-year tenure as music director at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra ended in 2018. Now carrying the title of Conductor Emeritus, Oundjian’s tenure served as a major creative force for the city of Toronto. He also conducts globally and served as music director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 2012 to 2018. In 2019, Oundjian was named Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival and continues in that role today, having already put the Festival on the map of summer classical-music events.

Oundjian’s path led back to the podium, where he reinvented himself as a conductor, at age 39, gaining acclaim worldwide. But it didn’t happen overnight.

The decision to reunite with the Colorado Symphony was motivated in part by what he envisions the organization can accomplish, but also by the opportunity to work with a group of musicians he knows to be some of the best in the world.

“That is one of the things that I also love about the orchestra — they play their hearts out and they play with exceptional clarity, warmth, and accuracy. I have a particular approach to music making which concerns the concept of vulnerability. To make something really

While the road to it was a winding one, the podium has turned out to be an apt showcase for Oundjian’s musical acumen and charismatic personality, to the delight of both audiences and musicians alike. With that path now leading him back to Denver, an exciting new era for the Colorado Symphony is set to begin.

“This is an organization that plays music, that dedicates itself to great performances of music, which absolutely includes classical music. But there is often a sense from communities that their symphony does something very specific and somewhat narrow and only serves a tiny percentage of the community. And all the work that has been done over the last few years at the Colorado Symphony defies that logic. This is an orchestra for our community and there’s an awful lot of orchestral music that an awful lot of people love. So there’s an awareness and admission that at this point in the 21st century, orchestras have to be relevant for what they really are, which is not just performers of classical music, but absolutely includes the highest level of performance of classical music.”

Oundjian is also keenly aware that the Colorado Symphony has differentiated itself as an orchestra that excels in a number of different musical genres and must continue to innovate and push the envelope in a rapidly changing landscape for symphonic music.

Very often, one feels the sense of control dominating one’s surroundings and that’s really never the case with the Colorado Symphony. The aspect of excellence must always be the highest priority, and I believe the orchestra is really extraordinary at bringing out its excellence no matter what music is in front of them.”

Denver contributed his talents to the benefit of many charitable and environmental causes and received numerous civic and humanitarian awards over the years. Fans responded to his heartfelt urgings about ecology, peace, and compassion that were consistently delivered in a gentle manner on his records and at live performances. His passion to help create a global community paved the way for ventures into new musical and geographic territories. In 1985 he was invited by the Soviet Union of Composers to perform in the USSR, inspiring the internationally acclaimed song “Let Us Begin (What Are We Making Weapons For?).” The powerful video for “Let Us Begin” moved viewers around the world.

The Russians say that the first swallow of spring won’t make the weather for the whole season, but it can mark the turn toward a warmer climate. I tried to be that swallow.”

In 1963 he struck out on his own, moving to Los Angeles to be in the heart of the burgeoning music scene. It was during this time that Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. was urged by friends to change his name if a recording career was to be in his future. He took his stage name from the beautiful capital city of his favorite state, Colorado. Later in life, Denver and his family settled in Aspen, Colorado and his love for the Rocky Mountains inspired many of his songs.

Denver’s career spanned four decades and his music has outlasted countless musical trends and garnered numerous awards and honors.

The son of a U.S. Air Force officer, Denver’s artistic journey began at age eleven when he was given his grandmother’s guitar. Denver eventually took guitar lessons and joined a boys’ choir, which led him at age twenty to pursue his dream of a career in music.

John Denver experienced his first major break in the music industry when he was chosen from 250 other hopefuls as lead singer for the popular Mitchell Trio. Two years and three albums later, Denver had honed his considerable vocal talent and developed his own songwriting style. He gained recognition when his song “Leaving On A Jet Plane” was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, becoming their first and only number one hit. As the Mitchell Trio disbanded, Denver was climbing up the pop charts as a solo act with songs like “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Rocky Mountain High,” “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,” “Back Home Again,” “Thank God I’m A Country Boy,” and “Calypso,” solidifying his position as one of the top stars of the 1970s.

While the frontiers of the American West satisfied his spirit, less-traveled frontiers appealed to his imagination. Denver was an experienced airplane pilot and collected vintage biplanes. His interest in outer space was so great that he took and passed NASA’s examination to determine mental and physical fitness needed for space travel. He then became a leading candidate to be the “first civilian in space” on the Space Shuttle Challenger. Denver planned to write a song in space, but circumstances kept him from joining the ill-fated expedition, which saddened the world when it exploded during take-off in 1986.

Today, millions of fans old and new enjoy the work of this extraordinary performer. Thirty albums and four decades after he began, John Denver’s music is as relevant as ever. His humanitarian work continues to strengthen our global village, and his dynamic celebration of life, spirit and nature is a powerful inspiration to us all.

Among his many gifts, Denver was also a talented photographer. He photographed images of the people and places he experienced in his travels and showed his work professionally, often in connection with speeches made at colleges and universities as well as government and business facilities across the country.

Many of Denver’s songs reflected his relationship with nature and indeed, one of his greatest pleasures was spending time outdoors. He spent as much time as possible backpacking, hiking, climbing and fishing. He was an avid golfer and skier, regularly participating in celebrity charity events for both sports.

On March 12, 2007, Colorado’s Senate passed a resolution to make Denver’s trademark 1972 hit “Rocky Mountain High” one of the state’s two official state songs, sharing duties with its predecessor, “Where the Columbines Grow.”

The success of his visit led to a concert tour of the USSR in 1986. These were the first performances by an American artist since the Cold War began – an unprecedented cultural exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. He returned to the USSR in 1987 to do a benefit concert for the victims of Chernobyl.

Denver was also the first artist from the West to do a multi-city tour of mainland China, in October 1992. He was somewhat astonished to discover how popular and well known his songs were in China. “‘Country Roads,’” he was told, “is the most famous song written in the West.”

Denver was a true adventurer, exploring all that the world had to offer. Throughout his life’s journey he challenged himself on every level, which is an integral part of what made him an extraordinary man, an uncommon friend and a rare human being.

John Denver died tragically in a plane crash on October 12, 1997. He was survived by his brother Ron, mother Erma and three children, Zak, Anna Kate and Jesse Belle.

The year of 2018 marked the 60th anniversary of Itzhak Perlman’s U.S. debut and appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, which took place on November 2, 1958. This milestone was celebrated

Mr. Perlman has entertained and enlightened millions of TV viewers of all ages on popular shows as diverse as The Late Show with David Letterman, Sesame Street, The Frugal Gourmet, The Tonight Show, and various Grammy Awards telecasts. His PBS appearances have included A Musical Toast and Mozart by the Masters, as well as numerous Live from Lincoln Center broadcasts such as The Juilliard School: Celebrating 100 Years. In 2008, he joined renowned chef Jacques Pépin on Artist’s Table to discuss the relationship between the culinary and musical arts, and lent his voice as the narrator of Visions of Israel for PBS’s acclaimed Visions series. Mr. Perlman hosted the 1994 U.S. broadcast of the Three Tenors, Encore! Live from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. During the 78th Annual Academy Awards in 2006, he performed a live medley from the five film scores nominated in the category of Best Original Score for a worldwide audience in the hundreds of millions. Born in Israel in 1945, Mr. Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. An early recipient of an America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship, he came to New York and soon was propelled to national recognition with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Following his studies at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy

Over the past two decades, Mr. Perlman has become actively involved in music education, using this opportunity to encourage gifted young string players. Alongside his wife Toby, his close involvement in the Perlman Music Program has been a particularly rewarding experience, and he has taught full-time at the Program each summer since its founding in 1993. Mr. Perlman currently holds the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair at the Juilliard School.

Numerous publications and institutions have paid tribute to Itzhak Perlman for the unique place he occupies in the artistic and humanitarian fabric of our times. Harvard, Yale, Brandeis, Roosevelt, Yeshiva and Hebrew universities are among the institutions that have awarded him honorary degrees. He was awarded an honorary doctorate and a centennial medal on the occasion of Juilliard’s 100th commencement ceremony in 2005. Itzhak Perlman’s presence on stage, on camera, and in personal appearances of all kinds speaks eloquently on behalf of the disabled, and his devotion to their cause is an integral part of his life. Mr. Perlman has performed multiple times at the White House, most recently in 2012 at the invitation of President Barack Obama and Mrs. Obama, for Israeli President and Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree Shimon Peres; and at a State Dinner in 2007, hosted by President George W. Mr. Perlman has a long association with the Israel Philharmonic and has participated in many groundbreaking tours with this orchestra from his homeland. In 1987, he joined the IPO for history-making concerts in Warsaw and Budapest, representing the first performances by this orchestra and soloist in Eastern bloc countries. He again made history as he joined the orchestra for its first visit to the Soviet Union in 1990, and was cheered by audiences in Moscow and Leningrad who thronged to hear his recital and orchestral performances. This visit was captured on a PBS documentary entitled Perlman in Russia, which won an Emmy. In 1994, Mr. Perlman joined the Israel Philharmonic for their first visits to China and India.

DeLay, he won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964, which led to a burgeoning worldwide career. Since then, Itzhak Perlman has established himself as a cultural icon and household name in classical music.

From 2012-2018, Oundjian served as Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra during which time he implemented the kind of collaborative programming that has become a staple of his directorship. SOUNDINGS 2022/23 PROGRAM XI

Highlights of past seasons include appearances with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Iceland Symphony, the Detroit, Atlanta, Saint Louis, Baltimore, Dallas, Seattle, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. With the onset of world-wide concert cancellations, support for students at Yale and Juilliard became a priority. In 2022/2023 season Oundjian will conduct the opening weekend of Atlanta Symphony, followed by return engagements with Baltimore, Indianapolis, Dallas, Colorado and Toronto symphonies, as well as a visit to New World Symphony.

Oundjian has been a visiting professor at Yale University’s School of Music since 1981, and in 2013 was awarded the school’s Sanford Medal for Distinguished Service to Music. THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more. Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation.

NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue.

NO FILMING: Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras, or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed in the hall.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher. If you’ve left the hall and have a lost item, please call 720.865.4200.

LATE SEATING: In consideration of our musicians, guest artists, crew, staff, and your fellow patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex. We encourage you to arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the start of your event. This will alleviate congestion in all walk ways and entrances and will allow for proper screening. FIRST AID FACILITIES for all patrons are available. Please inquire with an usher should you need these facilities or assistance. Please report any accidents, falls, or lost items to an usher promptly.

In the event of a building emergency patrons will be notified by an announcement from the stage. Should the building need to be evacuated, please exit the nearest door, or according to instructions given from stage.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts. Concessions are managed by Centerplate. Please see the FAQ page regarding policy on food and beverage in Boettcher Concert Hall. The Colorado Symphony reserves the right to change the concessions policy at any time. The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions.

THE GUILD SHOP: Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, The Shop (as it's affectionately known) is the perfect place to pick up unique gifts, seasonal fashions, and of course recordings produced by, and of, the Colorado Symphony. The Shop is operated by a dedicated group of Symphony supporters and enthusiasts year-round.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.
