WELCOME

Happy holidays from the Genessee Mountain Foundation and welcome to Boettcher Concert Hall!

As longtime champions of the Colorado Symphony education programs, one of the most profound aspects of our support lies in the Symphony’s dedication to making music accessible to every corner of Colorado.

One of the Symphony’s goals is to extend its impact beyond Boettcher Concert Hall and reach even more communities across our state. To achieve this, we need your support. Here are three of the many reasons to get involved and support our Community Education programs:

• Access for All: Nearly 50% of all Community Education attendees receive financial support, ensuring that we remove barriers to participation and make music accessible to everyone.

• Widespread Engagement: Over 250 schools across the state engage with our community education programs each season, fostering a love of music in students from diverse backgrounds.

• Enriching the Community: 74% of our musicians are dedicated to enriching the music ecosystem by teaching in addition to performing, sharing their expertise and passion with the next generation.

These are not just statistics—they represent the heart of our community education efforts. Our programs are interactive experiences that ignite a lifelong love of music in students who may not otherwise have this opportunity. By bridging gaps in access, we’re ensuring that music education is a reality for every child, no matter their location.

Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply sharing our mission, every effort makes a difference. Consider contributing today to give your community the gift of music education. Thank you for your support and for helping us bring the gift of music to all.

Warmest wishes this holiday season, Kevin & Lynn McDonald and family Genessee Mountain Foundation

P.S. Have you had the chance to experience a Community Education concert? Join us this upcoming spring for a Mini Música concert on February 18, 2025 or our Family Youth Concert on Sunday, April 13, 2025! We would love to see you there!

Your Gifts at Work

Music has a unique power to unite and inspire and the Colorado Symphony is dedicated to making symphonic music accessible to everyone, believing that thriving communities are built when music is shared by all.

Your support of the Colorado Symphony goes beyond the notes heard in Boettcher Concert Hall. It resonates throughout the state, reaching into communities, local businesses, and schools, where it inspires the next generation and enriches the cultural fabric of Colorado.

With an annual economic impact of $30 million, the Colorado Symphony not only enhances Denver’s national profile but also contributes to a higher quality of life for both current and future generations. Yet the most profound influence is felt in classrooms and practice studios across Colorado, where 74% of the Symphony’s full-time musicians also serve as music educators or offer private lessons. As one of Colorado’s largest full-time arts employers, the Symphony provides essential support to the state’s performing arts landscape.

Community engagement is at the heart of the Colorado Symphony’s mission. Each year, nearly 30,000 children, students, and adults participate in our educational and community programs, both at Boettcher Concert Hall and across the Denver metro area, experiencing the enriching world of symphonic music. Recent efforts to prioritize accessibility and deepen community involvement have elevated these programs even further.

A recent partnership with Aurora Central High School (ACHS) has created high impact programming and delivered mentorship and coaching opportunities to students. Since its inception in 2022, the partnership has provided over 250 hours of mentorship to ACHS students. The program includes sectionals for both band and orchestra students and side-by-side performances with those musicians at school concerts, supporting the school’s music program after the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In recent years, the Colorado Symphony has also strengthened its relationship with El Sistema Colorado, prioritizing greater accessibility for the program’s students and their families. While the Symphony has historically supported El Sistema, the past three years have marked a deeper partnership aimed at breaking down barriers and fostering a stronger connection between the two organizations. This effort began in 2022 with discussions between the Symphony and Ingrid Larragoity, El Sistema’s Executive Director, resulting in a series of new offerings designed to engage El Sistema’s students more directly with the Symphony and Boettcher Concert Hall.

One highlight of this expanded collaboration was the introduction of a special El Sistema Night Out at the Symphony. This event featured El Sistema Colorado’s top ensemble participating in sectionals with Symphony musicians, a backstage rehearsal, a lobby performance, and an opportunity to

attend a Symphony concert—completely free of charge. Building on this success, the partnership has continued to evolve, with new initiatives such as a side-by-side performance during the Mexican Cultural Center’s Dia del Niño event and regular sectionals integrated into El Sistema’s programming. The upcoming season promises even more impact, with monthly sectionals culminating in a spring concert collaboration, further solidifying the Colorado Symphony’s commitment to nurturing young talent in the community.

The Colorado Symphony continues to be an agent of social development in the community by enhancing music appreciation, providing unforgettable entertainment, and using music to touch the depths of the human spirit. But the most meaningful impact will come from connecting with the next generation who will become the artists, educators, and music enthusiasts of tomorrow.

Each year, Colorado Symphony musicians perform alongside the Denver Young Artists Orchestra (DYAO), one of the leading youth orchestras in the country, formed in 1977 by musicians of the Denver Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, a strategic alliance was formed between the two organizations, which has ensured that young musicians in the DYAO have even greater access to and mentorship from the musicians of the Colorado Symphony. That relationship has been enhanced in the years since, with the 2023 hiring of Associate Conductor Wilbur Lin who also serves as DYAO Music Director, and the DYAO staff sharing office space with the Colorado Symphony staff. The two organizations also collaborate on annual sectionals, the annual Side-by-Side concert with Colorado Symphony musicians,

lobby performances, and special access to masterclasses with guest artists and conductors.

In addition to DYAO and El Sistema

Colorado, Colorado Symphony musicians participate in many other youth-based music programs throughout Colorado including Front Range Youth Symphony and Rocky Ridge Music Center.

Colorado Symphony musicians are extending their passion for education beyond the concert hall by creating unique programs for schools and their own communities. Many of these musicians take the initiative to design original concert experiences tailored specifically for educational settings. Longtime former Colorado Symphony cellist David Mullikin, for instance, wrote his own in-school programs like Jack and the Beanstalk and The Story of Paul Bunyan, bringing classical music to life for students. Continuing this tradition, musicians like violinist Karen Kinzie now curate community concerts with themes such as “Movie Music” and “Holiday Music”. These programs are repurposed for schools, libraries, nursing homes, and other local venues, reflecting the Symphony’s deep commitment to outreach and engagement.

“I have been involved in Colorado Symphony education and community programs for over 3 decades,” said Colorado Symphony violinist Karen Kinzie. “One of the key reasons I have participated in these programs and community engagement programs for so many years is that I feel it is important for us to go to them. When audiences (whether students or adults) come to the full symphony in a large hall, it can seem a bit impersonal. With small programs that go out in the community to schools and retirement centers, it is much more up close and personal, and the audiences can hear us talk, rather than just play.”

This connection between symphony musicians and the community extends further with new inschool offerings that combine music with interdisciplinary learning. The Symphony is developing programs that meet state education standards, with pilot themes exploring subjects like the water cycle through music and a geography-themed journey across America. For some musicians, these visits take on a personal touch, as they perform at their own children’s schools, fostering meaningful connections between music and education at a personal level. This dedication highlights how the Symphony continues to make a profound impact within schools and the broader community.

“Since my children started school, I’ve been visiting their classes a few times a year to talk about classical music and play the cello for them,” said Colorado Symphony cellist Danielle Guideri. “Over time, I’ve noticed their questions have become more knowledgeable, showing how just a few visits can spark curiosity and growth. I believe exposing children to diverse art forms can open up opportunities and inspire them in meaningful ways.”

As the Colorado Symphony looks towards the future, the goal remains clear: to provide programming and experiences that allow students and the community to not only experience the live sounds of symphonic music, but to see themselves in the music, in its musicians, and in Boettcher Concert Hall. That includes additional inclusive programming featuring bilingual performances, repertoire from an array of diverse composers, and continued efforts to reach more school districts across the state through in person performances and the distribution of virtual content. The Colorado Symphony is still capable of so much more, and with your help, we can make that vision a reality.

Consider a donation today and help maintain this thriving ecosystem of support for years to come. The future of live symphonic music belongs to all of us and together we can make a lasting impact on Colorado for generations to come. Your support today will allow the Colorado Symphony to provide in-person and virtual education content to schools around the state and open doors for new and innovative future opportunities.

Celebrating 90 Years of the Colorado Symphony Guild

For Colorado Symphony patrons, no visit to Boettcher Concert Hall is complete without a trip to the Colorado Symphony Guild Shop. Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, the Guild Shop is a gift-givers delight full of unique souvenirs, seasonal fashions, and recordings produced by the Colorado Symphony.

But what may be less apparent to casual observers is the long, storied history shared by the Colorado Symphony and The Guild – a relationship that stretches back to the very birth of what is now known as the Colorado Symphony.

During the Great Depression, the Denver Civic Orchestra, a semi-professional precursor to the Denver Symphony Orchestra, struggled to pay musicians and find customers willing to pay for performances. In 1934, the Symphony’s volunteer publicist, Helen Marie Black,

along with prominent local figures Jeanne Cranmer and Lucille Wilkin founded the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Black would go on to become the first woman CEO of a major United States symphony orchestra, while serving as the Denver Symphony Orchestra’s business manager for more than 30 years, including twelve of them as an unpaid volunteer.

Shortly after the founding of the DSO, Ms. Cranmer envisioned an organization that would serve the DSO, not only in fundraising but as a nurturer of great music presentation and the creation of future audiences from the youth of the city. So, in 1935 she hosted a luncheon with six of her friends, including Helen Marie Black, at the Denver Country Club. It was at this meeting that the wheels were set in motion to form such an organization.

During a meeting at Mrs. Cramner’s home with 75 of Denver’s cultural leaders, the Women’s Committee for the Orchestra was officially formed with Ms. Cranmer elected as Chairmen, a post she held until 1940.

The Women’s Committee became the precursor to the Denver Symphony Guild, which changed its name in 1940 and in 1947 saw the establishment of Music Appreciation Groups in various areas of Denver. The goal was to support the Denver Symphony Orchestra and encourage musical appreciation, knowledge, and participation of its members and the community. This continues to be the Guild’s purpose today.

Throughout their history, Guild members have been vital to many Symphony events and programs. As far back as 1947, the Guild promoted the orchestra’s first Red Rocks concert series by staffing five Thursday-Friday ticket booths in strategic Denver locations preceding the weekend events. The Guild helped expand the orchestra’s Education Department with the formation of the Junior Guild’s original “Tiny Tots” program in 1967. In 1973, a $30,000 Guild gift underwrote the orchestra’s first recording. And when Boettcher Hall opened in 1977 and was dedicated in 1978, Guild members served as ushers for introductory tours as well as the inaugural “Pick a Seat” program.

The Guild has maintained this strong relationship through the highs and lows in the Symphony’s past. When, in 1988, the Denver Symphony Orchestra suffered a severe financial downturn with its concert season suspended for several months, the Guild remained loyal. Their devotion was rewarded as the Symphony survived and emerged stronger as the Colorado Symphony. Thereafter, the Guild Board voted on a name change to Colorado Symphony Guild.

After 89 years, the CSG continues to be an invaluable component of the Colorado Symphony’s success. Over that time, the Guild has provided over $4.5 million in donations to the Colorado Symphony. Last year the Guild was able to donate $80,000 to the Colorado Symphony.

“ The efforts and enthusiasm of Guild members make the Colorado Symphony Guild a unique and invaluable part of the Colorado Symphony.”

“The generous support of the Colorado Symphony Guild is vital to the success of our organization,” said Music Director Designate Peter Oundjian. “We’re grateful not only for the Guild’s outstanding financial support through fundraising efforts and sales at the Guild Shop, but also for the support they provide to our musicians and staff throughout the season. Their passion and enthusiasm for the Colorado Symphony energizes our entire organization.”

Today, the most visible and well-known element is the Guild Shop, which debuted in 1983 as a card table in the Boettcher Concert Hall lobby where wrapping paper was sold. The Shop has evolved into a go-to boutique for unique musically oriented gifts, fine leather goods and jewelry, and trend setting clothing that appeals to the diverse patrons of the Colorado Symphony. And it has justified its transformation by producing more than $1 million in total net proceeds.

Looking towards the future, The Guild’s five-year plan involves attracting new members and helping the symphony grow by implementing a new Chapter that specifically caters to the working adult.

“The efforts and enthusiasm of Guild members make the Colorado Symphony Guild a unique and invaluable part of the Colorado Symphony,” said Mark Cantrell, Colorado Symphony President & CEO. “The Colorado Symphony would not be where it is today without their support over these last 89 years.”

“Every great city needs a great symphony and our Colorado Symphony feeds the hearts, minds, and souls of this community,” said Janet Weisheit, Guild President. “The Guild is proud of its past successes and looks forward to adding to those successes in the future.”

At the beginning of 2016 Dragon conducted Wynton Marsalis’ Swing Symphony as part of the Perth International Art Festival alongside Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Christopher began his conducting studies in 2011 and was a member of the prestigious Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program in Australia under the guidance of course director Christopher Seaman. He has also studied with numerous distinguished conductors including Leonid Grin, Paavo and Neeme Jarvi at the Jarvi Summer Festival, Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival and conducting pedagogue Jorma Panula.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IF I AM LATE?

For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP?

During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY?

We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos. Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT?

You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.

CAN I BRING THE KIDS?

Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT?

Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Visit the event page on our website, or flip to the performance details in this Soundings Magazine.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE?

Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits! Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER?

We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders. Updates, cancelations, or changes will be posted on coloradosymphony.org and on the event page for the concert.

THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more. Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation.

LATE SEATING: In consideration of our musicians, guest artists, crew, staff, and your fellow patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue.

NO FILMING: Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras, or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed in the hall.

SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex. We encourage you to arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the start of your event. This will alleviate congestion in all walk ways and entrances and will allow for proper screening. To review the full policy and prohibited items, please visit artscomplex.com.

In the event of a building emergency patrons will be notified by an announcement from the stage. Should the building need to be evacuated, please exit the nearest door, or according to instructions given from stage.

FIRST AID FACILITIES for all patrons are available. Please inquire with an usher should you need these facilities or assistance. Please report any accidents, falls, or lost items to an usher promptly.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts. Concessions are managed by Centerplate. Please see the FAQ page regarding policy on food and beverage in Boettcher Concert Hall. The Colorado Symphony reserves the right to change the concessions policy at any time. The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher. If you’ve left the hall and have a lost item, please call 720.865.4200.

THE GUILD SHOP: Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, The Shop (as it's affectionately known) is the perfect place to pick up unique gifts, seasonal fashions, and of course recordings produced by, and of, the Colorado Symphony. The Shop is operated by a dedicated group of Symphony supporters and enthusiasts year-round.
