FIRST-TIM ERS GUIDE FAQ WHAT IF I AM LATE? For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall.

They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP? During most classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. Applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY? We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cellphone videos. Please be courteous to your fellow concert-goers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/ camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT? You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby. Please be courteous to your 8

fellow concert-goers while consuming your beverages so as not to disrupt the concert.

CAN I BRING THE KIDS? Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT? Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Visit the event page on our website, or flip to the performance details in this Soundings Magazine.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE? Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits! Single-ticket holders may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER? We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders.

Updates, cancellations, or changes will be posted on coloradosymphony.org and on the event page for the concert.

Beethoven. The name itself carries an immense, mystical power; a mononymous title for one of the most innovative, well known, and impactful musicians in human history. Despite living his life over two centuries ago, Ludwig van Beethoven’s music remains as relevant and groundbreaking today as it was at its inception.

To commemorate the 250th year since Beethoven’s birth, the Colorado Symphony will celebrate his unmatched brilliance with a series of musical performances in Boettcher Concert Hall and across Colorado throughout 2020, bringing the full orchestra and chamber ensembles to underserved communities in the state where access to live symphonic music is often difficult or impossible to realize.

“Our Beethoven 2020 Initiative will ensure access to live symphonic music for all of Colorado as we strive to impact the state in a geographically diverse way,” said Anthony Pierce, Chief Artistic Officer for the Colorado Symphony. “In showcasing the entire ensemble as well as smaller ensembles made up of Colorado Symphony musicians in venues throughout the state, this yearlong series promises to be a memory maker for Colorado residents statewide.”

The Beethoven 2020 celebration officially kicked off December 16, 2019 with a special, one-night only performance of the Colorado Symphony’s annual All Beethoven concert, which featured Beethoven’s Overture from Egmont, his “Emperor” Fifth Piano Concerto, and the astounding Fifth Symphony.

The tour portion of this yearlong celebration will take the Colorado Symphony on the road to over 10 different venues throughout the state, beginning January 19 at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre. Chamber ensembles led by Colorado Symphony Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and Assistant Principal Bass Nicholas Recuber will perform as part of Local Set, an intimate, indoor Red Rocks experience at the Visitor Center, featuring local Colorado musicians, themed menus for a full dinner buffet, drinks, and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a backstage tour of the venue.

In February, Recuber will lead a chamber ensemble in a performance at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. And in March, his chamber ensemble will perform

“Even though the vast majority of musicians in the Colorado Symphony are transplants, i.e. we moved here after winning an audition, most symphony players quickly fall in love with the state and find it hard to leave,” said Recuber. “The Beethoven 2020 initiative is a great way for us to combine our passion for Classical music and our love of this wonderful state.”

The month of March will also see Hwang-Williams’ chamber ensemble traveling for performances in Steamboat Springs.

“Beethoven’s enduring message of hope over adversity resounds so clearly and loudly that people will commemorate this towering Genius with celebrations all over the world for his 250th Birthday,” said Hwang-Williams. “I’m so thrilled to participate, along with several colleagues, in bringing his chamber music to outlying areas of Colorado for the Beethoven 2020 initiative. We hope to connect with these communities and share our passion for music through the universal language of Beethoven.”

And the yearlong celebration only picks up steam from there as the second half of the Colorado Symphony’s 2019/20 Season positively overflows with repertoire from Beethoven’s illustrious career, showcasing the entire range of his brilliance as a composer. That includes performances of his spiritually expressive Missa Solemnis with the Colorado Symphony Chorus February 21-23, the inventive Fourth Piano Concerto featuring soloist Garrick Ohlsson April 3-5, and his beautifully tranquil Violin Concerto with soloist Simone Porter May 8-10. The 2019/20 Season culminates May 22-24 with Beethoven’s groundbreaking Third Symphony, the “Eroica” — a work which represented a true turning point in musical history as it bridged the Classical and Romantic eras.

What’s more, thousands of students from throughout the Front Range will participate in 12 Youth Concerts at Boettcher Concert Hall throughout the 2019/20 Season, the focus of which will be Beethoven, his musical influences, and artists who were influenced by Beethoven himself.

Following the conclusion of the 2019/20 Season, the Colorado Symphony will return to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre on July 26, 2020. In what will be one of the most awe-inspiring performances in the storied venue’s history, the Colorado Symphony

will perform Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony outdoors under the stars.

This once-in-a-lifetime performance will feature nearly 500 musicians on stage as the full orchestra will be accompanied by a massive community chorus made up of the Colorado Symphony Chorus, Anschutz Chorus, and more, along with four vocal soloists for an outdoor musical experience unlike any ever seen in Colorado.

“This Red Rocks performance is going to be truly special,” added Pierce. “Our state’s most iconic venue has hosted many of the greatest musicians of all time. But it’s never seen 500 musicians on stage at one time.”

In September, a pair of full ensemble performances will take place with the Colorado Symphony hitting the road for concerts at the Montrose Pavilion and the Avalon Theatre in Grand Junction. And later that month, a mid-sized ensemble will perform at the Fox West Theater in Trinidad. The tour concludes in November when Brook Fergusen, Principal Flute, leads a chamber ensemble in a performance of Beethoven repertoire at the Mancos Opera House.

“As our proud name ‘Colorado Symphony’ suggests, we are Colorado’s only full-time symphony orchestra and have a commitment to reach the entirety of our state,” said Ferguson. “We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to share the music of Beethoven with many audiences outside of the Denver metro area and to explore this music in a wide array of venues.”

The Colorado Symphony’s 2020/21 Season schedule will be released in March 2020 with additional Beethoven repertoire still to come and additional tour dates to be announced as they become available.

When the year concludes, over 100,000 Colorado residents will have experienced Beethoven throughout the state — from Denver to Mancos and Grand Junction to Fort Collins. Indeed, Colorado will have stood at the forefront of a worldwide celebration, commemorating the life and work of a cherished musical icon.

By Nick Dobreff and Cecile Forsberg The Colorado Symphony is dedicated to serving our diverse community through engaging symphonic experiences, both within Boettcher Concert Hall and throughout Colorado. In that spirit, the Colorado Symphony along with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra and El Sistema Colorado combined to host the first-ever Denver Music Education Convening at the Colorado Symphony offices in downtown Denver on October 3 and 4, 2019.

The goal of the convening was to identify and implement actions that increase equity, diversity, and inclusivity for Denver youth music education in a transformational, measurable, and sustainable manner.

Undertaking that goal was a veritable who’s who of the Denver musical arts community, bringing together thirty-nine organizations including Denver Public Schools, Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), Universities, and numerous not for profit 501(c)3 organizations.

“The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation was pleased to support this important convening,” said Gina Ferrari, Director of the Grants Program with the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation.

“I was so impressed with the number and diversity of organizations participating, demonstrating the interest and need in finding strategies to address equitable access to music education. The convening’s collaborative and creative approach to identifying shared purpose and next steps was really inspiring and I’m excited about the possibilities moving forward.”

Through robust discussions – led by Team Tipton consultants – the convening discussed topics ranging from the definition of an active musical life, diversity of musical genres, and the impact of music education. There are many diverse organizations incorporating all genres of music through educational work. Some programs overlap while others are unique in and of themselves. The consensus in the room was that an active musical life will mean many things to many different people and all Denver youth should have access to these opportunities across our community.

This convening was a shining moment for musical arts education in Denver as organizations came together across a variety of shared values to create the following ambitious vision statement: “We use music to amplify the silenced and reimagine community.” Team Tipton challenged the convening to define actionable steps to make this ambitious vision a reality and the participating organizations committed to creating a Denver Music Education Coalition. This coalition will engage all community stakeholders to define the mission and overarching vision of the coalition.

“The Colorado Symphony was honored to host the inaugural Denver Music Education Convening in conjunction with DYAO and El Sistema Colorado,” said Jesse Martinez, Director of Community Education with the Colorado Symphony. “The opportunity to collaborate with a group of passionate organizations who are committed to improving equity, diversity, and inclusivity within Denver youth music education was inspiring and beneficial for all involved. We look forward to taking the next steps towards the creation of a viable Denver Music Education Coalition as we strive to create a lasting impact on youth music education in Denver for years to come.”

Plans for an initial meeting are already underway with plans in motion to reach out to the community to ensure that all voices are represented at the table including students, performers, educators, parents, organizations, funders, and more.

CLASSICS BIOGRAPHIES JUN MÄRKL, conductor Conductor Jun Märkl is recognized as a devoted advocate of both symphonic and operatic Germanic repertoire, and as a rare specialist for his idiomatic explorations of the French impressionist composers. His long-standing relationships with the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera Munich, and the Semperoper Dresden led to his being offered the Music Director posts of the Orchestre National de Lyon, the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, and the Basque National Orchestra.

He appears as a regular guest with the world’s leading orchestras, having conducted the Czech Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, and many others.

Märkl has released over 50 recordings. His 9 CD recordings of the complete orchestral works of Claude Debussy on the Naxos label brought him the coveted award from the French Ministry of Culture in 2012 - the “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.” He recorded 3 CDs with works of Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa; the complete Schumann symphonies with the NHK Symphony Tokyo; Mendelssohn, D’Albert, and Wagner with the MDR Leipzig; and Ravel and Messiaen discs with the Orchestre National de Lyon.

Born in Munich, Märkl’s father was a distinguished concertmaster and his mother a solo pianist.

Märkl studied at the Musikhochschule in Hannover, and with Sergiu Celibidache in Munich and Gustav Meier in Michigan. In 1986, he won the conducting competition of the Deutsche Musikrat, and a year later won a scholarship from the Boston Symphony Orchestra to study at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. Soon after, he had his first appointments in European opera houses followed by music directorships at the Staatstheater in Saarbrücken (1991-94) and at the Mannheim Nationaltheater (1994-2000).

CLASSICS BIOGRAPHIES FABIO BIDINI, piano Italian pianist Fabio Bidini is one of this generation’s top-flight pianists. His appearances have included performances with The London Symphony Orchestra at The Barbican, The Philharmonia Orchestra of London at Royal Festival Hall, the San Francisco Symphony, New World Symphony, Dallas Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Forth Worth Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra Prague at the Rudolphinum, and the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra at Liszt Academy Hall. He has collaborated with conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Carlos Prieto, Max Valdes, Dimitry Sitkovetsky, Ivan Fisher, Jesus Lopez Cobos, JoAnn Falletta, Zoltan Kocsis, Michael Christie, and Gianandrea Noseda, Included in Fabio Bidini’s 2019-20 season are a recital in Kansas City and a chamber music concert with members of the San Diego Symphony and under their auspices. In the 2018-19 season he performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic both in Buffalo and on tour with them in Florida, and also appeared with the Charlotte Symphony and Rhode Island Philharmonic. His schedule also included four concerts with the Modigliani Quartet in Tucson, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and Dallas performing the Dvorak Piano Quintet.

Mr. Bidini has repeatedly performed at the prestigious festivals of Europe, including the Tuscan Sun Festival Cortona/Napa, Festival Radio France Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon, La Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival, Stern Grove Festival, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli International Piano Festival, Festival dei due Mondi and most recently, Grant Park Festival.

Fabio Bidini is also in great demand as a chamber music partner. He is the pianist of the highly acclaimed ensemble, Trio Solisti, and has enjoyed artistic collaboration with many ensembles and artists including the American String Quartet, the Janacek Quartet, the Brodsky Quartet, the Szymanowski Quartet, the Modigliani Quartet, Zoltan Kocsis, Alexis Pia Gerlach, Maria Bachmann, Eva Urbanova, Nina Kotova, Dimitri Ashkenazy, and Sabrina-Vivian Höpcker.

Fabio Bidini began his piano studies at the age of five. He graduated magna cum laude from the Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and studied composition at the Florence Conservatory. He has been awarded first prize in eleven of Italy’s most prestigious national piano competitions and has been the recipient of the top prizes awarded in eight international competitions – Terni, Köln, Busoni 1988 and 1992, Pretoria, Marsala, London and the Van Cliburn Fort Worth. He made his North American debut in 1993 with the Atlanta Symphony.

In 2015 Fabio Bidini became the first recipient of the Carol Grigor Piano Chair – a new position enabled by a $5-million endowment gift from the Colburn School’s board chairwoman Carol Colburn Grigor in Los Angeles. Mr. Bidini has been Professor of Piano at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, in Berlin, one of Europe’s premiere music conservatories. He also serves as an Artist-in-Residence at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln.

Fabio Bidini’s discography comprises thirteen CDs recorded under the labels BMG, Classichord, Musikstrasse, EPR and True Sounds. He is a Steinway artist.

CLASSICS PROGRAM NOTES FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN (1810-1849): Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21 Frédéric Chopin was born on February 22, 1810 in Zelazowa-Wola (near Warsaw), Poland and died on October 17, 1849 in Paris. He composed his F minor Concerto in 1829, and introduced it on his concert of March 17, 1830 at the National Theater in Warsaw, the event that marked his formal debut as pianist and composer. The score calls for woodwinds in pairs, two horns, two trumpets, bass trombone, timpani, and strings. Duration is about 34 minutes. Natasha Paremski was the piano soloist and Peter Oundjian conducted the orchestra when the work was last performed on March 12-14, 2010.

During his student days at the Warsaw Conservatory in the late 1820s, Chopin met a comely young singer named Constantia Gladowska and for the first time in his life, fell in love. In his biography of the composer, Casimir Wierzynski wrote, “She was considered one of the school’s best pupils, and also said to be one of the prettiest. Her regular, full face, framed in blond hair, was an epitome of youth, health, and vigor, and her beauty was conspicuous in the Conservatory chorus. The young lady, conscious of her charms, was distinguished by ambition and diligence in her studies. She dreamed of becoming an opera singer....” Chopin followed Constantia to her performances and caught glimpses of her when she appeared at the theater or in church, but he never approached her. His love manifested itself in giddily immature ways. He raved about Constantia’s virtues to his friends. He invited one Mrs. Beyer to dinner simply because her given name was the same as that of his beloved. He reported “tingling with pleasure” whenever he saw a handkerchief embroidered with her name. He broke off one of his letters abruptly with the syllable “Con — ,” explaining, “No, I cannot complete her name, my hand is too unworthy.” After yet another half year of such maudlin goings-on, Chopin finally met — actually talked with — Constantia in April 1830. She was pleasant to him and they became friends, but he was never convinced that she fully returned his love. She took part in his farewell concert in Warsaw on October 11th before he headed west to seek his fame and fortune (he settled in Paris and never returned to Poland), and he kept up a correspondence with her for a while through an intermediary. (He felt it improper to write directly to a young woman without her parents’ permission.) Her marriage to a Warsaw merchant in 1832 caused him intense but impermanent grief, which soon evaporated in the glittering social whirl of Paris. The emotional rush of young love Chopin experienced over Constantia played a seminal role in the two piano concertos he wrote in 1829 and 1830, works full of lyrical melody and ardent emotion.

Chopin based his concertos on the Romantic piano style of Hummel, Kalkbrenner, Field, and Ries rather than on the weightier abstract forms of Beethoven. The orchestra in these virtuoso works is, truly, accompaniment, and is virtually excluded from the musical argument once the pianist enters. The center of attention is the soloist, and it says much about the quality of Chopin’s writing for the piano that his concertos continue to be heard while literally shelvesfull of their contemporary creations have not been displayed for nearly two centuries. In the opening movement of the Second Concerto, most of the orchestra’s participation occurs in the introduction, in which are presented the main theme (a rather dolorous tune with dotted rhythms played immediately by violins) and the second theme, a brighter strain given by woodwinds led by the oboe. The piano enters and, with the exception of orchestral interludes surrounding the development section and the concluding coda, dominates the remainder of the movement.

CLASSICS PROGRAM NOTES Liszt thought the second movement “of a perfection almost ideal; its expression, now radiant with light, now full of tender pathos.” Robert Schumann — writer, publisher, editor as well as composer — mused, “What are ten editorial crowns compared to one such Adagio as that of the Second Concerto!” Composed under the spell of his first love, this movement was a special favorite of Chopin himself. A description of the movement’s form — three-part (A–B–A) with wide-ranging harmonic excursions in the center section — is too clinical to convey the moonlit poetry and quiet intensity of this beautiful music. In both its technique and its tender emotionalism, it breathes the rarefied air of Chopin’s greatest works.

Chopin’s biographer Frederick Niecks noted the finale’s “feminine softness and rounded contours, its graceful, gyrating, dance-like motions, its sprightliness and frolicsomeness.” The theme was inspired by the mazurka, the Polish national dance that also served Chopin as the basis for more than fifty stylized compositions for solo piano. The movement brims with dazzling virtuosity. Its structure comprises a series of episodes rounded off by the return of the beguiling main theme and a cheerful coda in F major heralded by a call from the solo horn.

 CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862-1918): La Mer, Trois Esquisses Symphoniques (“The Sea, Three Symphonic Sketches”) Claude Debussy was born on August 2, 1862 in St. Germain-en-Laye, near Paris and died on March 25, 1918 in Paris. He composed La Mer between 1903 and 1905. Camille Chevillard directed the premiere, on October 15, 1905 with the Concert Lamoureux in Paris. The score calls for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, three bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two cornets, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, two harps, and strings. Duration is approximately 23 minutes. The last performance of La Mer took place on March 22-24, 2013, with Matthias Pintscher conducting.

“You may not know that I was destined for a sailor’s life and that it was only quite by chance that fate led me in another direction. But I have always held a passionate love for the sea.”

With these lines written on September 12, 1903 to the composer-conductor André Messager, Debussy prefaced the notice that he had begun work on La Mer. Debussy’s father was a sailor and his tales of vast oceans and exotic lands held Claude spellbound as a boy. A family trip to Cannes when he was seven years old ignited his life-long fascination with the thoughts and moods evoked by moving water. Twenty years later, he discovered an aspect of the sea very different from the placid one he had seen on the resort beaches of the Mediterranean. In early June of that year, he was traveling with friends along the coast of Brittany. Their plans called for passage in a fishing boat from Saint-Lunaire to Cancale, but at the time they were scheduled to leave a threatening storm was approaching and the captain advised canceling the trip. Debussy insisted that they sail. It turned out to be a dramatic, storm-tossed voyage with no little danger to crew and passengers. Debussy relished it. “Now there’s a type of passionate feeling that I have not before experienced — Danger!” he declared. These early experiences of the sea — one SOUNDINGS

CLASSICS PROGRAM NOTES halcyon, the other threatening — were captured years later in La Mer. In addition to the memories of his own experience of the ocean, Debussy brought to La Mer a sensitivity nourished by his fascination with visual renderings of the sea. He was certainly in sympathy with the Impressionistic art of his French contemporaries, but more immediate inspiration for the work seems to have come from the creations of two foreign artists — the Englishman Turner, whom Debussy called “the finest creator of mystery in art,” and the Japanese Hokusai. A selection of Turner’s wondrous, swirling sea paintings, as much color and light as image, was shown in Paris in 1894 and probably seen there by Debussy. Eight years later, during the 1902-1903 Turner exhibit at London’s National Gallery, Debussy again sought out these brilliant canvases, and that visit may have been the catalyst for creating La Mer. (A half-century before Debussy, Turner experienced the violence of the sea first-hand when he had himself lashed to a ship’s mast during a furious storm just to see what it was like.) Japanese sea- and landscapes were popular in Paris during the 1890s as a result of their introduction there at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. The exquisite drawings of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) so pleased Debussy that he chose one of them, The Hollow of the Wave off Kanagawa, for the cover of the score of La Mer. From Dawn to Noon on the Sea, built around the play of thematic and rhythmic fragments rather than conventional melodies, is perfectly suited to expressing the changing reflections of the morning sun in the air, clouds, and water. The Play of the Waves is a brilliant essay in orchestral color, woven and contrasted with the utmost evocative subtlety. Dialogue of the Wind and the Sea reflects the awesome power of the sea as well as its majesty.

 MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937): La Valse, Poème choréographique Maurice Ravel was born on March 7, 1875 in Ciboure, France and died on December 28, 1937 in Paris. He composed the La Valse between December 1919 and March 1920. The premiere was given by the Lamoureux Orchestra on December 12, 1920 under Camille Chevillard. The work is scored for three flutes (third doubling piccolo), three oboes (third doubling English horn), two clarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, two harps, and strings. Duration is about 13 mintues. Jeffrey Kahane conducted the orchestra’s last performance on January 17-19, 2014.

Ravel first considered composing a musical homage to Johann Strauss as early as 1906.

The idea forced itself upon him again a decade later, but during the years of the First World War, he could not bring himself to work on a score he had tentatively titled “Wien” (“Vienna”).

By January 1919, when Ravel was immersed in the composition of his tribute to Vienna, he said that he felt he was “waltzing frantically.” He saw La Valse both as “a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese waltz” and as a “fantastic and fatefully inescapable whirlpool.” The “inescapable whirlpool” was the First World War toward which Vienna marched in three-quarter time, salving its social and political conscience with the luscious strains of Johann Strauss. There is more than a touch of the surreal in La Valse. Familiar and real things are placed against a background strange and a little threatening in its disorienting effect. This artifice paralleled the situation that Ravel saw as characteristic of late-19th-century Vienna in particular and Europe in general.

A surrealistic haze shrouds the opening of La Valse, a vague introduction from which fragments of themes gradually emerge. In the manner typical of the Viennese waltz, several continuous sections follow, each based on a different melody. At the half-way point of the score, however, the murmurs of the introduction return, and the melodies heard previously in clear and complete versions are now fragmented, played against each other, and are unable to regain the rhythmic flow of their initial appearances. The musical panacea of 1855 cannot smother the reality of 1915, however, and the music becomes consumed by the harsh thrust of the roaring triple meter transformed from a seductive dance into a demonic juggernaut. At the almost unbearable peak of tension, the dance is torn apart by a violent five-note figure, a gesture so alien to the triple meter that it destroys the waltz and brings this brilliant, forceful and disturbing work to a shattering close. ©2019 Dr. Richard E. THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more.

Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation.

LATE SEATING: In consideration of our musicians, guest artists, crew, staff, and your fellow patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue.

NO FILMING: Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras, or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed in the hall.

SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts.

Concessions are managed by Centerplate.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher.
