Welcome to Boettcher Concert Hall. At the start of a new year and the midway point of our Centennial, I’m reminded that this milestone could not have been reached without the overwhelming and longstanding support of this community. We are your symphony, and this celebration belongs to you and our state as much as it does to our orchestra. This is an exciting time for the Colorado Symphony, which has forged an international reputation for creativity, imagination, and outside the box thinking that has us poised to become one of the preeminent 21st century orchestras. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to welcome back our trio of Imagination Artists — RZA, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, and Nathaniel Rateliff — for their next creative collaborations which will debut this spring exclusively for Colorado Symphony audiences. It’s also a special time for our Colorado Symphony Chorus as they celebrate their 40th Anniversary with a number of incredible programs over the coming months. I’m delighted to be conducting both the orchestra and chorus in Mozart’s Requiem (March 22-24) and a special chorus anniversary celebration featuring “A Sea Symphony” by Vaughan Williams (May 18-19). You also won’t want to miss the chorus with Marin Alsop as she conducts Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (February 23-25). Some other personal highlights from the coming months include: •M ozart and Now: We’re reimagining the traditional concert weekend experience this January 26-28 with three unique performances contrasting the music of Mozart with pieces from some of today’s brightest composers. • F rom April 12-14, I’m delighted to be conducting Mahler’s magnificent Third Symphony, one of the most breathtaking masterworks ever composed for orchestra, and featuring beloved vocalist Michelle DeYoung. • We’ll conclude our Classics season from May 24-26 with an ode to the Centennial State, with Richard Strauss’ An Alpine Symphony and Prokofiev’s Third Violin Concerto performed by Bruce Liu. On behalf of our musicians, staff, and the Board of Trustees, thank you for your continued support. CENTENNIAL STORIES: Cellist Margaret Hoeppner Celebrates 63 Seasons with the Colorado Symphony By Nick Dobreff
H
ow do you measure a life’s work? For Colorado Symphony cellist Margaret Hoeppner, the answer lies in 63 seasons of unwavering dedication to the world of music.
“I think symphonic music tells a tale; it speaks to human experience. When you listen to a great classical piece you are suddenly very aware that you’re experiencing something that is timeless and not bound by an iPad or social media. You’re dealing with something that has permanence beyond what we can even really imagine.” A native of Bozeman, Montana, Margaret embarked on her musical journey at a young age and her passion for it has only grown stronger in the years since. “How I chose the cello is kind of fun because we lived in Bozeman which at that time was a pretty small town. My mother played and taught piano and I have an older sister who played the violin, so I started out on the piano when I was five. Then when I turned ten my mother said, ‘I think you should play the cello because we need a cello for a trio,’” she laughed. “Luckily there was a wonderful cellist in town that I took lessons from and once I started, I never looked back.” Hoeppner went on to study cello at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia under Leonard Rose and Orlando Cole, and with Gabor Rejto at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Soon thereafter, she made her way to Colorado, unaware that it would become her longtime home. “After leaving the Curtis Institute, I came to Denver in 1961 to audition for a position in the Denver Symphony and I’ve been here ever since.” 14

Education was never far from her mind as she also holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Denver and worked at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She also served as a cello instructor on the faculty of Colorado Women’s College. “Since I had joined the orchestra when I was relatively young, I had never really finished college so I decided to go back and get a degree and then I decided to go ahead and get a masters in social work because I thought it would be a way that I could give back to the community a little bit.” Margaret’s life has been a harmonious blend of music, education, and family. When she met her late husband, Fred Hoeppner, who was also a member of the orchestra, they combined their families, resulting in a total of six children, and later welcomed two more children into the world. Today, Margaret enjoys the joys of being a grandmother to ten grandchildren. Her musical legacy is intertwined with Fred’s, who was the Denver Symphony’s principal cellist for close to 20 years before becoming the assistant conductor. Together, their combined service to the orchestra spans well over a century, a testament to their unwavering dedication to the art form. “Fred came here in 1950 as principal cellist. He was hired by music director Saul Caston and he played principal cello for almost 20 years. When he became assistant conductor, he moved over to assistant principal cello until he retired from the orchestra in 2003 after having played consecutively for 53 years. So, between the two of us, it’s well over a hundred years if you add our two careers together.” In recognition of Margaret and Fred’s lifelong commitment to the Colorado Symphony, a prestigious endowed chair bears their names, the Fred and Margaret Hoeppner principal C O LO R A D O S Y M P H O N Y.O R G

cello chair. For Margaret, this represented not only a personal honor but also a statement of hope for the arts in Denver. “I think the endowed chair speaks to the legacy for both myself and my husband. Various people will move in and out of that chair in the future, that’s just the way it is in orchestras. We all have times that we are here and then we move on. But I also think that endowing a chair is a statement of hope, courage, and strength for the future. So, I think any time that someone endows a chair it’s just a statement of their belief in the artistic fabric of our community. It was an amazing honor and it’s not only a wonderful tribute and personal tribute which I’m very humbled by, but it also speaks to the value of our orchestra in our community that people are able to give this kind of amazing gift and help the orchestra survive and thrive.” In reflecting on the growth of Denver, Margaret highlights the significance of the symphony in the city’s cultural landscape, providing artistic enrichment and contributing to the city’s economic vibrancy. “Denver is growing at a crazy rate as everyone knows. I think everyone loves Colorado, they love the mountains, the climate, and more and more they love the arts that we have in Denver. It’s a big financial bonus for the city to have a symphony orchestra. We all know it’s a great ski place, we all know it’s a great sporting town, but we sometimes forget that the symphony also provides all kinds of support for restaurants and other venues here in town so it’s integral to the backbone of our community.” Perhaps the most poignant chapter in Margaret’s musical journey unfolded on September 12, 2001. As the orchestra prepared to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with the legendary Yo-Yo Ma, the world was shaken by the events of 9/11. In response, Ma and music director Marin Alsop changed the program, opting instead to perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto, a composition born from another world-altering conflict, the aftermath of World War I. As the Colorado Symphony’s longest tenured member, the performance after 9/11 is Hoeppner’s most powerful, moving memory, providing a beacon of hope during a time of unimaginable darkness. “Ma’s performance brought the audience and the orchestra a sense of solace and some comfort during that terribly difficult time. It was a very emotional evening, and everyone in the hall was in shock over the events of the previous 24 hours. People came out to try to get some comfort and some sense of normalcy but before the concert it was very quiet, not the normal buzz in the hall that happens before a concert. But once Ma came out and we started playing it brought a sense that we will recover from this tragedy. Because of the beauty of his performance, it gave us all hope. It gave me hope that we would survive and that this is something we would recover from.” Hoeppner has had the privilege of playing alongside Ma on a number of occasions over the years and they are among her most cherished memories. She describes the 16

experiences as exhilarating and believes that Ma’s love for music elevates the entire orchestra. “The occasions that I’ve been so lucky to play with Yo-Yo Ma are just unbelievably thrilling because you feel like you’re in the presence of someone who’s not only tremendously gifted but is really kind of magical. It lifts the orchestra up when he’s onstage. Everyone feels this aura of love and devotion to music that he exudes. He’s an amazing talent but he’s also an amazing human.” Over six decades, Margaret has lived through the transformation of the orchestra, as it evolved from the Denver Symphony to the Colorado Symphony, and adapted to become one of the leading orchestras of the 21st century by excelling in both the classical and contemporary musical realms. “I think the fact that we do so many collaborations and perform contemporary music in general is one of our strengths. I think it speaks to our willingness and desire to be very current and meaningful in our community, making those connections between our orchestra and the larger world. right now it is the best it has ever been. We play such a gamut of music, everything from rock to pop to country to classical and it has brought more people into the concert hall and exposed new audiences to the power of orchestral music.” Margaret Hoeppner’s life’s work is immeasurable in the conventional sense. It resonates through generations of musicians she has influenced and in the hearts of countless listeners touched by her music. For Margaret, her journey is not just a career; it’s a lifelong symphony of passion, dedication, and love for the art that has enriched her life and the lives of so many. “The Colorado symphony has really been a gift to me. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IF I AM LATE? For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission. WHEN SHOULD I CLAP? During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity. WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY? We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos. Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop. CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT? You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.
CAN I BRING THE KIDS? Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund. HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT? Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits! Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. MOVIES BIOGRAPHIES JUSTIN FREER, conductor American composer/conductor Justin Freer was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. He has established himself as one of the West Coast’s most exciting musical voices and is a highly sought-after conductor and producer of film music concerts around the world. Freer began his formal studies on trumpet, but quickly turned to piano and composition, composing his first work at eleven and giving his professional conducting debut at sixteen. Continually composing for various different mediums, he has written music for world-renowned trumpeters Doc Severinsen and Jens Lindemann and continues to be in demand as a composer and conductor for everything from orchestral literature to chamber music around the world. He has served as composer for several independent films and has written motion picture advertising music for some of 20th Century Fox Studios’ biggest campaigns including Avatar, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Aliens in the Attic. As a conductor Freer has appeared with some of the most well-known orchestras in the world including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is also one of the only conductors to have ever conducted in both the ancient Colosseum and Circus Maximus in Rome. Renowned wind conductor and Oxford Round Table Scholar Dr. Rikard Hansen has noted that, “In totality, Freer’s exploration in musical sound evoke moments of highly charged drama, alarming strife and serene reflection.” Freer has been recognized with numerous grants and awards from organizations including ASCAP, BMI, the Society of Composers and Lyricists and the Henry Mancini Estate. He is the Founder and President of CineConcerts, a company dedicated to the preservation and concert presentation of film, curating and conducting hundreds of full length music score performances live with film for such wide ranging titles as Rudy, Gladiator, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, It’s A Wonderful Life, and the entire Harry Potter Film Franchise. Mr. Freer earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music Composition from UCLA, where his principal composition teachers included Paul Chihara and Ian Krouse. In addition, he was mentored by legendary composer/conductor Jerry Goldsmith.

MOVIES BIOGRAPHIES JOHN WILLIAMS, composer In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone and The Book Thief. His 50-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, Lincoln, The BFG, The Post and The Fabelmans. His contributions to television music include scores for more than 200 television films for the groundbreaking, early anthology series Alcoa Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, Chrysler Theatre and Playhouse 90, as well as themes for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), NBC’s Meet the Press, and the PBS arts showcase Great Performances. He also composed themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He has received five Academy Awards and fifty-three Oscar nominations, making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars. He has received seven British Academy Awards (BAFTA), twenty-five Grammys, four Golden Globes, five Emmys, and numerous gold and platinum records. In 2003, he received the Olympic Order (the IOC’s highest honor) for his contributions to the Olympic movement. He received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in December of 2004. In 2009, Mr. Williams was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the U.S. Government. In 2016, he received the 44th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute – the first time in their history that this honor was bestowed upon a composer. In 2020, he received Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts as well as the Gold Medal from the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society in the UK, and in 2022 he was awarded an honorary knighthood of the British Empire as one of the final awards approved by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II In January 1980, Mr. Williams was named nineteenth music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor which he assumed following his retirement in December 1993 after fourteen highly successful seasons. He also holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood. Mr. Williams has composed numerous works for the concert stage, among them two symphonies, and concertos commissioned by several of the world’s leading orchestras, including a cello concerto for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a bassoon concerto for the New York Philharmonic, a trumpet concerto for The Cleveland Orchestra, and a horn concerto for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 2009, the Boston Symphony premiered his concerto for harp and orchestra entitled “On Willows and Birches”, and in the same year, Mr. Williams composed and arranged “Air and Simple Gifts” especially for the first inaugural ceremony of President Barack Obama. MOVIES BIOGRAPHIES BRADY BEAUBIEN, producer A Stanford graduate and All-American athlete, Brady Beaubien studied cognitive neuroscience before founding Interlace Media, an awardwinning motion graphics company. As a premiere CG animation studio and creative agency for feature films, Interlace defined the global campaigns of over 100 major Hollywood movies, including the Avatar, X-Men, Rio, Ice Age, and Die Hard franchises. In 2013 Beaubien co-founded CineConcerts, a company dedicated to reinventing the experience of theatrical presentation and orchestral music. He currently produces CineConcerts’ full repertoire of film-concert experiences, including Gladiator Live, The Godfather Live, DreamWorks Animation in Concert, Elf in Concert, and the entire Harry Potter Film Concert Series. Beaubien helps lead the company’s vision for immersive XR technology and innovative presentations of media, including writing Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage, a live concert experience that celebrates 50 years of iconic material. He also works to ensure that CineConcerts inspires a return to communal entertainment and continues to offer modern audiences and the world’s youth a chance to reconnect with concert halls and local orchestras. Beaubien is a member of YPO Beverly Hills and is on the board of several companies dedicated to Web3 and frontier technologies. Beaubien is also accomplished in the world of architectural design, with his projects including Matsuhisa Paris at the Le Royal Monceau-Raffles and The Citrus on Hollywood’s Melrose Avenue, an impassioned commercial structure that represents a commitment to the metropolitan providence of Los Angeles. At The Citrus, advanced technologies merge with wood, glass, and Japanese gardens, in an organic and modernist design. Additionally, Beaubien partnered with world renown sushi chef Nobu Matsuhisa to personally design his new restaurant concept in the picturesque building. Beaubien lives in Massachusetts and California, with his wife Emmy and their two children, Archer and Channing.

THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more. Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation. LATE SEATING: In consideration of our musicians, guest artists, crew, staff, and your fellow patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission. NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue. NO FILMING: Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras, or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed in the hall. SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex. ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby. COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1. BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts. Concessions are managed by Centerplate. Please see the FAQ page regarding policy on food and beverage in Boettcher Concert Hall. The Colorado Symphony reserves the right to change the concessions policy at any time. The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions. LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher.
