MASTERWORKS A BEVY OF BEETHOVEN The season begins with a bang, as Music Director Andrew Litton conducts Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, September 18 and 19. Is Beethoven’s final symphony the greatest piece of music ever written? Many believe so. Listen for yourself in this bombastic program, which features the full Colorado Symphony Chorus. Whether you’re a veteran of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, or know it mainly from countless references in pop culture, film and television, there’s nothing like the power of Beethoven’s most famous work, beginning with four notes that changed the world. December 5 and 6, Jun Markl conducts an all-Beethoven program, which features Colorado favorite (and former Colorado Symphony Music Director) Jeffrey Kahane performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5. Beethoven’s music makes two more notable appearances this season: Colorado Symphony Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major April 17 and 18. And May 22-24, Yefim Bronfman performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major.
HEAR THE PEOPLE SING This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Colorado Symphony Chorus, an all-volunteer body widely regarded as the one of the finest choral ensembles in the country.
the chorus’ vocal mastery as well as the vision of director Duain Wolfe. November offers another opportunity to experience the power of the Colorado Symphony Chorus, with a sublime performance of Mozart’s Requiem led by conductor Pinchas Zukerman. A resident guest conductor at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, Zukerman is equally revered as a conductor and violinist. In the first half of this program, he’ll step away from the podium to perform two of Mozart’s works for violin and orchestra. F ebruary 13-15, the Colorado Symphony Chorus takes on an invigorating choral challenge with a semi-staged production of Puccini’s Tosca, one of the best-known operas ever written. Andrew Litton leads the audience through this great, tragic love story in a performance that places the orchestra, cast and chorus front and center.

Throughout the 2014/15 season, the orchestra’s resident musicians take solo turns that showcase their artistry. ith Andrew Litton on the podium November W 21-23, Principal Cello Silver Ainomäe makes his solo Masterworks debut with a performance of Dvořák’s beautiful Cello Concerto in B minor. Written in New York late in Dvořák’s career, this highly romantic concerto is considered by many to be the greatest work for cello in the classical repertoire. J an 16-17, 2015, Concertmaster Yumi HwangWilliams and Principal Flutist Brook Ferguson join pianist Simone Dinnerstein on Bach’s Baroque masterpiece, the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major. Conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, the program traverses the history of the symphonic form culminating with Bruckner’s grand Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major, “Romantic.”
Leonard Bernstein March 27-28, 2015, Principal Oboe Peter Cooper returns to the solo spotlight on Down the River of Time, by American composer Eric Ewazen. David Lockington conducts this program, which also features the world premiere of The Raven, a symphonic tribute to Edgar Allan Poe’s masterpiece, composed by Colorado Symphony Principal Timpanist William Hill.
THE AMERICANS From Bernstein, Gershwin and Barber to more contemporary voices, this season’s American Festival showcases masters who have created, perfected and expanded the American idiom in symphonic music. All winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the composers featured in this mini-series represent the diversity and innovation that define the American character.

MASTERWORKS BIOGRAPHIES SCOTT O’NEIL, resident conductor This is Scott O’Neil’s eighth season with the Colorado Symphony, and his third full season as resident conductor. O’Neil maintains a strong commitment to making music of the highest quality accessible to young audiences. He served as associate conductor for the Utah Symphony, which he joined in August 2000. O’Neil has guest conducted the Houston Symphony, Houston Youth Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Florida Philharmonic, Tulsa Philharmonic, Portland Symphony (Maine), the Lubbock Symphony, the Boise Philharmonic, the Salt Lake Symphony and the Columbus Symphony in Ohio. O’Neil studied piano performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory, served as the assistant conductor of the Eastman School Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Rice University, where he was the director of the Campanile Orchestra, a community/university orchestra. In 1999 he served as director of orchestras at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. In the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by the League of American Orchestras (LAO) to conduct an orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and advanced students from the University of Southern California in Synergy, a program created to promote young, contemporary composers. Also in the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by LAO to appear on the Conductor Preview with the Jacksonville Symphony. O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances in the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday Series.

MASTERWORKS BIOGRAPHIES YUMI HWANG-WILLIAMS, violin Yumi Hwang-Williams made her debut at the age of fifteen as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music. She is known today as an artist whose dynamic, stylish mastery of the classics is matched by her commitment to exploring and performing the works of contemporary composers. Strings magazine described her as a “Modern Prometheus” who has “emerged as a fiery champion of contemporary classical music.” Her interpretations of works by Thomas Adès, Aaron Jay Kernis, Michael Daugherty and Christopher Rouse have earned unreserved approval from the composers as well as critical acclaim. Yumi is a regular soloist with the Colorado Symphony and has performed with the symphony orchestras of Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Basel, Switzerland, and the Brucknerhaus Orchester, Linz, amongst others, under the batons of conductors such as Marin Alsop, Dennis Russell Davies, Hans Graf, Paavo Jarvi, and Peter Oundjian. An avid chamber musician, she has collaborated with such artists as Gary Graffman, Ida Kavafian, Christopher O’Riley, and John Kimura Parker. She is a member of the popular Aster Piano Trio, now in its fourth season. Yumi Hwang-Williams has served as concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony since 2000. She was concertmaster of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra for twelve years, has performed as guest concertmaster for the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Ottawa, at the invitation of music director Pinchas Zukerman, and has been guest first violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She is a faculty member of Denver University’s Lamont School of Music.
WENDY SUTTER, cello Heralded as “one of the great leading cellist of the classical stage” by the Wall Street Journal, Wendy Sutter has proven herself as one of the leading soloists of her generation, widely acclaimed by critics in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many other publications. As a solo recitalist Sutter has performed in numerous concert halls and music festivals throughout the United States, Europe, The United Kingdom, Asia, South America, and Australia, including Marlboro, Aspen, Tanglewood, the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, Toronto’s Luminato Festival, Spoleto, Ravinia, The Seattle International Festival, Evian, and at the Barbican. Her 2008 recording of Glass Songs and Poems for Solo Cello, which was written especially for her, and has been performed over 60 times world-wide to great acclaim, was voted best new CD of the year by listeners of National Public Radio, and was the second-best selling CD in the classical division on iTunes. Glass has recently completed a sequel, which Sutter will be recording later this year. Of her many recent performances, Sutter was invited as soloist to appear at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. performing for Bill and Melinda Gates. She also recently released a disc of chamber music composed by Guggenheim fellowship-award winning composer Joel Harrison. Sutter plays on the Ex-Vatican Strad a viola da gamba built in Cremona in 1620 by the great luthier Nicolo Amati and adapted to a cello by the master and his most famous student, Antonio Stradivari.

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES Griffes: The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan, Op. 8 The piece is scored for three flutes and piccolo, two oboes and English horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, three bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, piano, celesta, two harps and strings. Duration is 11 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on February 22, 1949, with Saul Caston conducting the orchestra at the Auditorium Theater (now the Ellie Opera House). Born in Elmira, New York, Charles Griffes (1884-1920) had his conservatory training in Berlin, but also exhibited influences of French Impressionism and Orientalism in his music. Due to a lung ailment, his career and his life were all too brief. However, he managed to prove that American composers were capable of writing music marked by individuality and an adventurous spirit. Griffes’ The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan was inspired by the Coleridge poem beginning “In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree.” Coleridge’s poem has as its title only Kubla Khan. Griffes expanded the title to emphasize focus on the palace, not the man. Additionally, he noted that he was intrigued by thoughts of what sorts of festivities might occur there. In its first version, in 1912, it was a solo piano work. Then, no less an authority than the great Italian pianist/composer Ferrucio Busoni (1866-1924) suggested it would better suit the orchestra, and Griffes began re-imagining the piece. His chosen orchestration — including everything from piccolo and English horn to bass clarinet and tuba — often uses instruments soloistically with the musical spotlight centering for a short time on one instrument, before shifting to another. With piano, celesta, two harps, and a host of percussion included, he had varied timbres at his disposal. The orchestral version premiered November 28, 1919, with the Boston Symphony and conductor Pierre Monteux. Griffes would live only another six months.
o Philip Glass: Double Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra The piece is scored for solo cello and solo violin, two flutes and piccolo, two oboes, two clarinets and bass clarinet, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, percussion, celesta, harp, piano, and strings. Duration is 33 minutes. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony. It is a style widely known as minimalism, possessing a steady, almost hypnotically pulsing beat and waves of arpeggios that smoothly rise and fall. The best known practitioner of the style, though far from its sole spokesman, is Philip Glass (b. 1937). The Baltimore native first made a name for himself with cutting-edge theatrical pieces and film scores. The success — indeed, SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG PROGRAM 5
MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES notoriety — of those works brought him to international attention, with an accordingly high demand for larger, even more ambitious works. Thus, in recent decades, Glass has turned to full scale operas, symphonies, and concerti for diverse instruments. His Double Concerto of 2010 spotlights the same two solo instruments that Brahms paired over a century earlier: violin and cello. Most concerti, whether by Brahms or any other master, tend to set the lyric brilliance of soloists against a steady orchestral foundation, with the musical adventure spread out over three contrasting movements. Glass does present three movements, but these are largely for orchestral coloration, sparing little space for soloistic display. Rather, he tends to reserve the soloists’ focus for unaccompanied duets that precede each orchestral movement. These are, by turn, languid or electric in energy, with the solo violin and solo cello on full display. The effect is of intimate theatrical dialogs interspersed amongst more populated crowd scenes for maximum contrast and highly varied colors. It is music of kaleidoscopic brilliance, often driven forward by those steady minimalistic pulsations. Glass’ Double Concerto began life as music for a ballet called Swan Song for the Netherlands Ballet Theater. At the time, Glass was already considering writing a concerto combining the talents of two particular colleagues: violinist Maria Bachman and cellist Wendy Sutter. He decided such a work could also serve as a ballet, reasoning that the soloists’ duets would be ideal accompaniment for balletic pas des deux. The work premiered in dance form April 22, 2010, with soloists Cecilia Bernardini and Maarte-Marie den Herder. For a later orchestral premiere, the composer’s original choice of soloists was restored. Whatever soloists one chooses, they’ll require both nimble technique and song-like flow to make the most of Glass’ deftly shaded phrases.
o Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 The piece is scored for two flutes and piccolo,two oboes and English horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, alto saxophone, two bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, piano, and strings. Duration is 37 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on April 20-21, 2012, with Joana Carneiro conducting. Having left his homeland shortly after the Revolution, Russian-born Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 -1943) had to entirely rebuild his career abroad. By the 1930s, he had regained his reputation with strong success in Western Europe and the US, having come to be regarded as one of the greatest living composer/pianists. His music might be banned occasionally in the Soviet Union but elsewhere, he had reached the top of his profession. In mid 1930s, having already completed four piano concerti and three symphonies, Rachmaninoff began to cut back PROGRAM 6 SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

Already past sixty, he seems to have found his energy for large projects waning, and in his last years would complete only one more multi-movement orchestral work, the Symphonic Dances of 1940, mostly composed in the US, and premiered there by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In its first incarnation, the work’s three movements had subtitles referring to times of day or perhaps times of life: Midday, Twilight, and Midnight. But once he completed the piece, Rachmaninoff deleted the subtitles and let the music stand on its own. Late in the first movement, he quotes a theme from his Symphony No. 1, the failure of which had nearly ended his composition career in its infancy. It seems unlikely that he would have expected any listeners to recognize the reference, as the score of that early symphony had vanished during the Russian Revolution. Only after the composer’s death did the orchestral parts come back to light, allowing the symphony’s belated rebirth. Yet that was long after the Symphonic Dances were written, so at the time, no one, the composer included, would have heard the Symphony No. 1 in several decades. After the driving energy of the first movement comes a melancholy waltz movement, then for the finale another burst of intensity, this time echoing the ancient Dies Irae theme, which Rachmaninoff had previously used in his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. There are also extracts from Russian Orthodox chants, as if here, very late in his career, Rachmaninoff is recalling his sacred works from the years before the Revolution and thanking higher powers for seeing him through to the end of a long and mostly successful career. Taken as a whole, the work is a symphony in all but name, and amply proves that Rachmaninoff’s powers had not declined in these, the last few years of his life. He would die of cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, California, only three years after completing the Symphonic Dances.
