MASTERWORKS A BEVY OF BEETHOVEN The season begins with a bang, as Music Director Andrew Litton conducts Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, September 18 and 19. Is Beethoven’s final symphony the greatest piece of music ever written? Many believe so.

Listen for yourself in this bombastic program, which features the full Colorado Symphony Chorus.

Whether you’re a veteran of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, or know it mainly from countless references in pop culture, film and television, there’s nothing like the power of Beethoven’s most famous work, beginning with four notes that changed the world. December 5 and 6, Jun Markl conducts an all-Beethoven program, which features Colorado favorite (and former Colorado Symphony Music Director) Jeffrey Kahane performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5.

Beethoven’s music makes two more notable appearances this season: Colorado Symphony Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major April 17 and 18. And May 22-24, Yefim Bronfman performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major.

HEAR THE PEOPLE SING This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Colorado Symphony Chorus, an all-volunteer body widely regarded as the one of the finest choral ensembles in the country.

the chorus’ vocal mastery as well as the vision of director Duain Wolfe.

November offers another opportunity to experience the power of the Colorado Symphony Chorus, with a sublime performance of Mozart’s Requiem led by conductor Pinchas Zukerman. A resident guest conductor at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, Zukerman is equally revered as a conductor and violinist. In the first half of this program, he’ll step away from the podium to perform two of Mozart’s works for violin and orchestra.

F ebruary 13-15, the Colorado Symphony Chorus takes on an invigorating choral challenge with a semi-staged production of Puccini’s Tosca, one of the best-known operas ever written. Andrew Litton leads the audience through this great, tragic love story in a performance that places the orchestra, cast and chorus front and center.

Throughout the 2014/15 season, the orchestra’s resident musicians take solo turns that showcase their artistry. ith Andrew Litton on the podium November W 21-23, Principal Cello Silver Ainomäe makes his solo Masterworks debut with a performance of Dvořák’s beautiful Cello Concerto in B minor.

Written in New York late in Dvořák’s career, this highly romantic concerto is considered by many to be the greatest work for cello in the classical repertoire.

J an 16-17, 2015, Concertmaster Yumi HwangWilliams and Principal Flutist Brook Ferguson join pianist Simone Dinnerstein on Bach’s Baroque masterpiece, the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major. Conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, the program traverses the history of the symphonic form culminating with Bruckner’s grand Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major, “Romantic.”

Leonard Bernstein March 27-28, 2015, Principal Oboe Peter Cooper returns to the solo spotlight on Down the River of Time, by American composer Eric Ewazen.

David Lockington conducts this program, which also features the world premiere of The Raven, a symphonic tribute to Edgar Allan Poe’s masterpiece, composed by Colorado Symphony Principal Timpanist William Hill.

THE AMERICANS From Bernstein, Gershwin and Barber to more contemporary voices, this season’s American Festival showcases masters who have created, perfected and expanded the American idiom in symphonic music. ANDREW LITTON, conductor Andrew Litton, Music Director of Norway’s Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Artistic Director of the Minnesota Orchestra’s Sommerfest, and Conductor Laureate of Britain’s Bournemouth Symphony, recently also became Music Director of the Colorado Symphony. He guest conducts the world’s leading orchestras and opera companies and has a discography of over 120 recordings with awards including America’s Grammy,® France’s Diapason d’Or, and many British and other honors. First appointed Bergen Philharmonic Music Director in 2003, Litton will celebrate the orchestra’s 250th Anniversary in 2015. It is one of the world’s longest established orchestras. STEPHEN HOUGH, piano/composer Stephen Hough is regarded as a renaissance man of his time. Over the course of his career he has distinguished himself as a true polymath, not only securing a reputation as a uniquely insightful concert pianist but also as a writer and composer. Hough is commended for his mastery of the instrument along with an individual and inquisitive mind which has earned him a multitude of prestigious awards and a long-standing international following. In 2001 Hough was the first classical performing artist to win a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. He was awarded the 2008 Northwestern University’s Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano, won the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award in 2010 and in January 2014 was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in the New Year’s Honors List. He has appeared with most of the major European and American orchestras and plays recitals regularly in major halls and concert series around the world. Highlights of the 2013-14 season include engagements in North America with the Philadelphia and Minnesota Orchestras and the Atlanta, Montreal, Pittsburgh and National symphonies; and recitals in Toronto, Portland OR, Santa Barbara, Phoenix, Calgary and at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS DUAIN WOLFE, Colorado Symphony Chorus director Recently awarded two Grammys® for Best Choral Performance and Best Classical Recording, Duain Wolfe is founder and director of the Colorado Symphony Chorus and music director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus.

This year marks Wolfe’s 30th season heading the Colorado Symphony Chorus. The Chorus provides vital support for numerous performances and radio broadcasts with the Colorado Symphony each season, and has been featured at the Aspen Music Festival each summer for two decades. Wolfe, who is in his 20th season with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, America’s largest professional chorus, has collaborated with Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti, and the late Sir George Solti on numerous recordings incuding Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, which won the 1998 Grammy® for Best Opera Recording. Wolfe’s extensive musical accomplishments have resulted in numerous awards, including an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of Denver, the Bonfils Stanton Award in the Arts and Humanities, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in an Artistic Discipline and the Michael Korn Award for the Development of the Professional Choral Art. Wolfe is also founder/director of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, from which he retired in 1999 after 25 years; celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. For 20 years, Wolfe also was active with the Central City Opera Festival as chorus director and conductor, founding and directing the company’s young artist residence program, as well as its education and outreach programs.

Wolfe’s additional accomplishments include directing and preparing choruses for Chicago’s Ravinia Festival, Vail’s Bravo! Festival, the Berkshire Choral Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. He has worked with Pinchas Zuckerman as Chorus Director for the Canadian National Arts Centre Orchestra for the past 12 years.

THE COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS The 2013-2014 Colorado Symphony concert season marks the 30th year for the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Symphony, the chorus has grown over the past three decades into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of over 200 volunteers — including some 15 charter members — joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts, to repeat critical acclaim.

The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and the Grand Teton Music Festival, where it performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 under the direction of Zubin Mehta. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing such diverse repertoire as the Bernstein Mass, Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 8, Honegger’s unique Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), Britten’s Peter Grimes, the Berlioz Requiem, and the epic Schoenberg Gurre~Lieder, under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman.

The Colorado Symphony Chorus is featured on a recent NAXOS release of Roy Harris’ Symphony No. 4. In July 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Chorus, Duain Wolfe led a three-country, two-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague, with a final presentation in Aspen. From Evergreen to Lochbuie, and Boulder to Castle Rock, singers travel each week to rehearsals and performances in Denver totaling about 80 each a year. Your Colorado Symphony brings a new line-up of programs and star performers.

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES Stephen Hough: Missa Mirabilis The piece is scored for vocal soloists, SATB chorus, two flutes (both doubling piccolo), pairs of oboes, clarinets, and bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, timpani, percussion, and strings.

Duration is approximately 20 minutes. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony.

Many of the greatest composers were also virtuoso performers. Think of Vivaldi and Paganini with their violins, or Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff (amongst many others) with their pianos.

English composer Stephen Hough (b. 1961) also belongs on that list. Hough first built an international reputation as a pianist before his own compositions began to attract favorable attention. As one might expect, some of his works include prominent roles for piano. However, works of other genres have also arisen, sometimes as special requests. The music director of England’s Westminster Cathedral asked Hough for a mass setting for choir and organ.

The resulting work premiered in London June 10, 2007 (Corpus Christi Day). A version with orchestral accompaniment followed when Hough decided the work would benefit from the varied timbres of orchestral participation.

The title Missa Mirabilis was Hough’s own choice and arose from an experience he had while at work on the piece. As he tells the story, “A lorry moved into the middle [lane] where I was cruising along at around 80 mph…

My car screeched out of control – swerving, spinning – then suddenly it was tumbling somersaults across the three lanes. As it turned over four or five times, many thoughts raced through my mind – one of which was that I would never get to hear the music I had written that week.”

Whether by luck or divine intervention, Hough survived largely unscathed, as did his briefcase containing the mass-in-progress, which was immediately retrieved from the wrecked vehicle.

He finished the final movements over the next several months, often composing in medical waiting rooms. The orchestral version premiered April 6, 2012, with the Indianapolis Symphony, where Hough had appeared as piano soloist while at work on the orchestration.

Hough’s mass is rooted in the English cathedral tradition: largely Anglican, somewhat Catholic, and resolutely tonal and melodic. One can readily imagine it resounding through high vaults of Gothic architecture. Often, Hough sets up deft contrasts between higher and lower vocal lines, as if juxtaposing angels’ voices to those of mortals. As one hears the closing Agnus Dei fading away in its final bars, one might keep in mind that it was written after Hough’s accident. Thus, it could be heard as a musical statement of astonished relief. Even those who have never had such an experience personally should be able to sense that emotion in the music’s rapt use of tension and resolution. More than a setting of an ancient sacred text, Hough’s Missa Mirabilis is a musical expression of relief at being spared.

Duration is 24 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was October 17 & 18, 2009 with Olga Kern as the soloist and Jeffrey Kahane conducting.

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was Russian born. However, with the onset of Revolution, he departed for the West and never returned to his homeland. Therefore, some of his greatest works – including that on this program – had their premier performances far from his native land. As one of the greatest pianists of his – or any generation, Rachmaninoff frequently focused on this, his favorite instrument. His catalog includes four piano concerti by name; the work that concerns us at the moment would have been the fifth, had the composer not chosen instead a more colorful title.

The Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, which was premiered by its composer in 1934 in Philadelphia, is a set of twenty-four variations upon a theme by that most gifted of violinists, Nicolo Paganini (1782-1840). Paganini’s theme is stated after a brief introduction to set the stage, and then set in ever new guises. It is not a concerto in the conventional sense, in that it comprises only one movement, rather than the usual three, but observant listeners will note that this single movement still follows the usual tempo pattern, beginning and ending briskly, with a contrasting center section at a slower pace. This middle portion builds toward the Rhapsody’s most famous variation, the lyrical 18th that uses a free inversion of the theme, that is, where the pitch formerly rose, it now falls, and where it fell, it now rises.

Although the Paganini caprice serves as the Rhapsody’s foundation, a subsidiary melody is also featured at times, the plainchant Dies Irae from the Requiem Mass. This most familiar of all religious themes, conveying its whiff of fire and brimstone, has been used frequently by composers in various devilish contexts. Its appearance here may be a recollection of the old legend concerning Paganini’s fiendish skill deriving from a pact with the devil, or perhaps it is only due to the composer’s awareness that this theme and the caprice are similar in shape. Whatever his reason, Rachmaninoff’s use of these contrasting melodies brings an additional richness to the now much-beloved Rhapsody.

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES Vaughan Williams: Dona Nobis Pacem The piece is scored for soprano and baritone solos, SATB chorus, three flutes (3rd doubling piccolo), oboes and clarinets in pairs, two bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, four trumpets, four trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, organ, and strings. Duration is 37 minutes. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony.

Premiering October 2, 1936, on the eve of world war, Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) was composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), who had served as ambulance driver in the previous war and blends Biblical texts with others inspired by the Crimean War and the American Civil War. It was written for the centenary of England’s Huddlesfield Choral Society, starting with a Walt Whitman setting that Vaughan Williams had written a quarter century earlier and expanding from that point. That initial text, a moonlit memorial to a father and son who both died in battle in the Civil War, would become the fourth of the cantata’s five movements.

It was not Vaughan Williams’ only approach to Whitman. His first symphony, A Sea Symphony of 1910, had set passages from Leaves of Grass. Yet Whitman’s masterful Civil War texts touched Vaughan Williams in a different way. Driving an ambulance at the front lines had left him with a perilously clear understanding of the American poet’s vision of war.

That first approach to “Dirge for Two Veterans” was initially set aside. When he found himself needing something for Huddlesfield and with the specter of war beginning to raise its head again, Vaughan Williams revived that old piece. He added two more Whitman settings, a portion of an address by English orator John Bright given at Parliament in 1855 at the time of the Crimean War, verses from the Old and New Testaments, and the ancient prayer Agnus Dei, in which the closing lines are a plea for peace and the tension of the earlier movements fades into the distance. The Agnus Dei begins the cantata, the three Whitman texts occupy the three central movements, and the Bright oration (through “that he may spare and pass on”) precedes the various Biblical texts of the final movement.

As a whole, the work is at times earth-shaking, at others consoling, sometimes intricately layered, at others blissfully simple. Composed amidst a specific time of global tension, it yet speaks to listeners today, serving as a musical bridge from one time to another. The wish expressed in its music is one that could be desired at any or every time.
