The Road Chair to the
This season, hundreds of musicians will compete for positions with the Colorado Symphony. It all begins with the audition, the toughest job interview in music.

ustin Bartels has lost track of the number of times he’s been through it: Is it 45? 50? Since his first attempt at age 21, he’s boarded dozens of planes, perfected long lists of works, learned to steady his nerves and his attitude as he goes through a ritual familiar to all symphonic musicians: The Audition. “The audition is basically a microcosm of what the job is,” says Bartels. “The repertoire list you learn for the audition is a good indication of what you’ll play in the job. You’re expected to perform and execute, to listen and take direction, as if you already know everything.” Bartels won his current job as Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony in 2008, after four attempts. The first time, as a young music student at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he didn’t make it past the first round. During another try in 2003, his mind was
elsewhere – on his new fellowship with the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami, where he’d met Myroslava Ivanchenko, the violin player who would become his wife. Back at Boettcher Concert Hall again in 2005, he advanced to the semi-finals but faced an unexpected obstacle: the dressing on a sub sandwich he’d had for lunch had irritated his mouth, a major handicap for a brass player. “I never realized the potential negative effect of eating an hour before my audition. But these are the kinds of things you learn,” he says. “I went through a cycle. At first I had this naïveté and basically no experience. The next time I was sort of apathetic. And the third time there was a physical factor. I learned that you have to be totally prepared – mentally, physically. You can’t do anything stupid. It’s something you have to take very seriously every time.”

“I learned that you have to be totally prepared — mentally, physically. It’s something you have to take very seriously every time.” —Justin Bartels, Principal Trumpet Justin Bartels The stakes were higher when Bartels returned in 2008. The Columbus Symphony, where he recently won the position of Principal Trumpet, was cutting health benefits. His wife was seven months pregnant. This time, he had to nail it. “I didn’t know how badly I wanted it until I played the audition,” he says. But a few notes into an excerpt from Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, blowing from behind a screen that separated him from the small, expert audience, he realized he couldn’t breathe. “I hadn’t been to Colorado in a while. I wasn’t prepared for the altitude. I stopped deliberately, which I think was a surprise to the committee, but when I started again, it was fine,” he says. “The common thought among musicians is that you can’t make a mistake, but that isn’t true. They’re listening for all kinds of things: style, character, the quality of sound. Note perfection is just one part of it.” Two rounds and 48 hours later, Bartels was named Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony. It was the kind of moment that propels professional musicians through years of intensive training, study, expense and sacrifice. Throughout the 2013/14 season, the Colorado Symphony will host dozens of players hoping to fill positions vacated by section changes and the retirement of a storied class of players, including cellists George Banks and Eric Bertoluzzi, violist Bobbie Hill, violinists Keith Howard and Gary Goble, and bassist Chet Hampson. On average, the Colorado Symphoy will field one hundred résumés for every opening, sent in
by professional musicians from around world. Of those, about sixty will fly to Denver, at their own expense, for the chance to perform for a panel of judges, including Music Director Andrew Litton, section leaders and senior members of the orchestra’s artistic committee. The audition process is purposely “blind” – players perform behind screens that conceal their appearance and identity; carpets on the floor obscure the sounds of players’ shoes on the stage, muting cues about gender, size and mobility. The question of who advances and who does not is answered in the ears, and minds, of the committee members. “The competition is the ultimate way we as an institution protect the artistic quality of our product, how we define and control the integrity of the people on our stage,” says Anthony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony. “The judges are listening for a complete musician, someone who is rhythmically impeccable, with perfect intonation, who plays in a stylistic manner consistent with the aesthetic of the composer and the excerpt. They must have knowledge of the repertoire, and what else is happening in the orchestra. You can only know some of these things by experience. We’re looking for a candidate who can respond to any challenges -- or curveballs -- all skills required to fit into an ensemble.” Winning a spot in the Colorado Symphony is not unlike earning a spot on a major sports team, adds Pierce. Musicians spend years perfecting their craft, most beginning as children, then
16 SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG
compete against the industry’s very best players. Success or failure is determined by one of the world’s fastest job interviews. Most last just ten minutes. Many musicians make dozens of attempts before landing the perfect position. Some never do. “There are more professional athletes in Denver than there are nationally auditioned professional musicians,” says Pierce. “The same people take our auditions as take the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra. There are only so many jobs out there. It’s a very exciting process, because we have a chance to identify someone who is possibly going to become a new member of the family, and you never know who it’s going to be.” Karl Fenner was already a member of the Colorado Symphony family in June 2012, when he took the most important audition of his career so far. He’d served in the bass section since October 2007, his first major job since dreams of playing professionally hatched at age 14. Like hundreds of others, he’d seen the post in The International Musician, the official news arm of the American Federation of Musicians, announcing that the Colorado Symphony was auditioning for Principal Bass. “All of the years of practicing, auditioning and performing inspired me to set my artistry to a higher level,” says Fenner. “I was ready to put myself on the line, to see how I would fare when I set myself against a pool of candidates and a
Karl Fenner Principal Bass
level of competition I hadn’t yet experienced.” Fenner spent six weeks working through a longer and more complicated list of audition excerpts he would be expected to play to perfection for a committee that included musicians he worked and played with every week. As the date drew near, Fenner purposely did not engage orchestra members he knew were involved with the audition process.
“As important as auditions are, they’re just part of a larger process of growth and perseverance.” —Karl Fenner, Principal Bass
“The idea of going in and playing and advancing, without my colleagues knowing it was me, that was a major source of pride,” he says. “I wanted to go in and win completely on my own.” After two tension-filled days of competition against more than forty world-class players, Fenner won the job of Principal Bass. And the audition didn’t stop there: Like all new, nontenured members of the Colorado Symphony, Fenner faces a two-year, peer-led review process that will partly determine the shape of his career, and his future. “There’s an idea I repeat to myself and to my students: Never look at any audition as an endpoint,” Fenner says. “As important as auditions are, they’re just part of a larger process of growth and perseverance. I say, ‘I won Principal Bass of the Colorado Symphony on my 16th audition. But there were 14 I went to and didn’t win.’ Going to those improved the character of my playing. As you’re preparing for a career, a lot of emotional resilience is important. You have to be able to say that no matter what happens in those ten minutes, this is something you’re committed to until you’re successful.”

Like so many of Boyd’s performances, his debut with the Camerata at London’s BBC Proms concerts was praised for clarity, vibrancy and musicality. Boyd and the Camerata returned to the Proms in 2009 with an acclaimed program of Haydn and MacMillan, one of the many living composers he champions. In 2009 Douglas Boyd joined The Musikkollegium Winterthur as its Principal Conductor. Each season he takes the orchestra on tour throughout Europe and has undertaken several ambitious recording projects in Winterthur including works of Strauss, Mendelssohn and Schubert. From 2003 through 2009, Boyd was Artistic Partner of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, with whom he performed, recorded and toured regularly, including acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Ojai Festival in California. MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES MOZART: Symphony No. 31 in D major, K. 297, “Paris” Scored for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets in pairs, timpani, and strings. Duration is 19 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was September 19-21, 2003, with Peter Oundjian conducting. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wasn’t French, so why does one find a symphony in his catalog called “Paris”? It was written during a concert tour to Paris, one that began in hope and ended in tragedy. It was early in 1778, and Mozart, just 22 years old and chaperoned by his mother, had traveled to Paris seeking fame for himself and his music. However, Parisians proved largely immune to yet another composer in their midst. Regrettably, even one of his rare successes in Paris was tainted by tragedy. On June 18, 1778, the composer conducted the premiere of his Symphony no. 31 to frequent and extended applause from the rarely amenable Parisians. Indeed, so well received was the work that it earned more performances in future weeks. “I was so happy,” Mozart wrote to his father Leopold a few days later, “that as soon as the symphony was over, I went off to the Palais Royal, where I had a large ice, said the Rosary as I had vowed to do, and went home.” The prayer, however, was not in thanks for a successful premiere. Instead, it was offered for the composer’s mother, who at the time of the concert was suffering badly from a fever. By the time that Mozart managed to write the letter about the symphony and the Rosary, her illness had already proven fatal. Yet he wrote only of her sickness, not of her death, and even expressed a belief that she would soon recover. Perhaps he could not bring himself to write those fateful words, or he may have been attempting to gradually prepare his father for the worst of news. On the same day that he wrote with deceptive optimism to his father, Wolfgang also wrote to a Salzburg priest, telling the whole sad story, and asking that the priest gently break the news to Leopold. Before long, the young composer returned to Salzburg, defeated and bereft. It must have been peculiarly wrenching for him that this symphony, inextricably bound up in days of sorrow, would continue to be in popular demand throughout his life.
o DEBUSSY: Syrinx Scored for solo flute alone. Duration in 3 minutes. This is the first performance of the work on a subscription program. It is the tiniest bit of music, for flute alone with no accompaniment whatsoever. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed it in 1913 as stage music for a piece by Mourey. When the composer died of cancer in 1918, the work still lay on his desk unpublished. It was not until 1927 that it would come to print, and then with a title that may not have originated with Debussy himself. The published title refers to a young mortal woman of Greek mythology, chased much against her will by the god Pan, and rescued by water spirits who turn her—irrevocably—into water reeds. The god, cheated of his desire, makes do by crafting from those reeds a flute-like

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES instrument that would ultimately come to be known as panpipes. A short piece barely two minutes in length, Syrinx is all flowing and rippling lines, rising and falling throughout the modern flute’s range, though with especial use of the lower pitches. Syrinx is a sore test to the player’s breath support, and to the player’s ability to maintain the purest of tones without benefit of accompaniment. It is music reminiscent of the opening of the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, though there, the orchestra soon joins in. There is nowhere to hide; the flutist is all alone.
o Ibert: Concerto for Flute and Orchestra Scored for solo flute, flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns in pairs, one trumpet, timpani, and strings. Duration is 20 minutes. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony. Parisian-born Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) first learned music from his mother, a talented pianist. Despite the protests of his financier father, Jacques then studied at the Paris Conservatoire until the outbreak of World War I, when naval service broke in on his education. He came home safely from the war and soon after his return, was granted the Conservatoire’s prestigious Prix de Rome for his cantata Le poète et la fée. With the prize came a period of study in Rome, with which Ibert combined travels throughout Italy, Spain, and Tunisia, the moods of which found their way into his orchestral suite Escales (Ports of Call). Ibert also composed three concerti, a handful of operas and ballets, as well as incidental music, many songs, orchestral works, much chamber music, and a variety of film music. Ibert’s Flute Concerto was written in 1934 for the internationally respected French flutist Marcel Moÿse. Moÿse himself premiered the work in Paris, and then, as professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire, ensured that it would have many more performances by declaring that it would be the institution’s designated test piece for would-be graduates in flute. Each flute student, playing before a panel of judges, would need to navigate the score’s intricacies successfully before earning a diploma. Whether the students dreaded or relished this opportunity would have depended on individual personality, but indeed, the concerto so challenges a player’s technique that it would be a fair test of mastery. Like much of his music, Ibert’s Flute Concerto is bright, varied, and full of character, with much deft usage of the contrasting timbres of instruments. Although the piece follows the standard pattern of fast movement-slow-movement-fast movement, there are innovations to be found in the quick variety of playing techniques required, especially of the soloist. One also finds harmonies more progressive than those that Mozart or Brahms would have used, but still stopping well short of cutting edge 20th century ideas. Ibert was no radical, a fact that has likely added to the favorable reception of this concerto.

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES BERLIOZ: Harold in Italy, Op. 16 Scored for solo viola, two flutes and piccolo, two oboes and English horn, two clarinets, four bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, two cornets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, cymbal, triangle, percussion, harp, and strings. Duration is 38 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on May 6 & 8, 1982, with Robert Vernon playing the solo viola part and Gaetano Delogu conducting. Harold in Italy is the product of a musical partnership between two of the most startling personalities of the 19th century, or indeed, of almost any century: Hector Berlioz (1803-1868), a young and radical composer who had scandalized Paris with his opium-inspired Symphonie fantastique, and Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840), an astoundingly talented violinist whose career took flight on rumors that he had sold his soul to the devil. Neither artist cared much for propriety; both viewed music as an avenue for deep emotional expression. In Harold in Italy, those shared concerns are perpetuated. In 1833, after hearing a performance of Symphonie fantastique, Paganini asked Berlioz to compose a viola concerto. The great violinist had recently acquired a Stradivarius viola, and wanted a new work to perform on the instrument. Years later, in his memoirs, Berlioz asserted that his concept for the piece was of a melancholy wanderer, like Childe Harold in the Byron poem; the “Italy” was due to Berlioz imagining that forlorn Harold is trekking south of the Alps. The composition that resulted had less to do with Byron than with Berlioz himself, and very little to do with Paganini, who apparently had envisioned a showpiece for his virtuosity. Harold in Italy he dismissed as having “too many rests” for the soloist, and never did perform it, though he confessed to bearing it admiration and paid the promised fee. After hearing another violist perform it, he offered his sincere appreciation to Berlioz. Harold in Italy is structured in four spacious movements. The first, titled “Harold in the Mountains,” carries the subtitle “scenes of sadness, happiness and joy.” It is an introspective introduction to our protagonist whose subtle theme, first played by the solo viola, echoes throughout the work. The second movement, “The March of the Pilgrims Singing Their Evening Prayer,” contrasts Harold’s lush romantic perspective with the pilgrim’s gentle religious fervor. The “Serenade” of the third movement depicts a mountaineer of the rugged Abruzzi region singing to his beloved. Here, Berlioz lets the English horn serve as the voice of the singer, yet Harold is there, too, in the solo viola, observing the intimate scene. For the final movement, Berlioz turns to a more animated episode, “The Orgy of the Brigands,” but even amidst the tumultuous action, he recalls the earlier scenes, with musical echoes of the pilgrim’s march, the serenade, and Harold’s theme.
