This season, hundreds of musicians will compete for positions with the Colorado Symphony. It all begins with the audition, the toughest job interview in music.

ustin Bartels has lost track of the number of times he’s been through it: Is it 45? 50? Since his first attempt at age 21, he’s boarded dozens of planes, perfected long lists of works, learned to steady his nerves and his attitude as he goes through a ritual familiar to all symphonic musicians: The Audition. “The audition is basically a microcosm of what the job is,” says Bartels. “The repertoire list you learn for the audition is a good indication of what you’ll play in the job. You’re expected to perform and execute, to listen and take direction, as if you already know everything.” Bartels won his current job as Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony in 2008, after four attempts. The first time, as a young music student at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he didn’t make it past the first round. During another try in 2003, his mind was

elsewhere – on his new fellowship with the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami, where he’d met Myroslava Ivanchenko, the violin player who would become his wife. Back at Boettcher Concert Hall again in 2005, he advanced to the semi-finals but faced an unexpected obstacle: the dressing on a sub sandwich he’d had for lunch had irritated his mouth, a major handicap for a brass player. “I never realized the potential negative effect of eating an hour before my audition. But these are the kinds of things you learn,” he says. “I went through a cycle. At first I had this naïveté and basically no experience. The next time I was sort of apathetic. And the third time there was a physical factor. I learned that you have to be totally prepared – mentally, physically. You can’t do anything stupid. It’s something you have to take very seriously every time.”

The Columbus Symphony, where he recently won the position of Principal Trumpet, was cutting health benefits. His wife was seven months pregnant. This time, he had to nail it. “I didn’t know how badly I wanted it until I played the audition,” he says. But a few notes into an excerpt from Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, blowing from behind a screen that separated him from the small, expert audience, he realized he couldn’t breathe. “I hadn’t been to Colorado in a while. I wasn’t prepared for the altitude. I stopped deliberately, which I think was a surprise to the committee, but when I started again, it was fine,” he says. “The common thought among musicians is that you can’t make a mistake, but that isn’t true. They’re listening for all kinds of things: style, character, the quality of sound. Note perfection is just one part of it.” Two rounds and 48 hours later, Bartels was named Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony. It was the kind of moment that propels professional musicians through years of intensive training, study, expense and sacrifice. Throughout the 2013/14 season, the Colorado Symphony will host dozens of players hoping to fill positions vacated by section changes and the retirement of a storied class of players, including cellists George Banks and Eric Bertoluzzi, violist Bobbie Hill, violinists Keith Howard and Gary Goble, and bassist Chet Hampson. On average, the Colorado Symphoy will field one hundred résumés for every opening, sent in

by professional musicians from around world. Of those, about sixty will fly to Denver, at their own expense, for the chance to perform for a panel of judges, including Music Director Andrew Litton, section leaders and senior members of the orchestra’s artistic committee. The audition process is purposely “blind” – players perform behind screens that conceal their appearance and identity; carpets on the floor obscure the sounds of players’ shoes on the stage, muting cues about gender, size and mobility. The question of who advances and who does not is answered in the ears, and minds, of the committee members. “The competition is the ultimate way we as an institution protect the artistic quality of our product, how we define and control the integrity of the people on our stage,” says Anthony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony. “The judges are listening for a complete musician, someone who is rhythmically impeccable, with perfect intonation, who plays in a stylistic manner consistent with the aesthetic of the composer and the excerpt. They must have knowledge of the repertoire, and what else is happening in the orchestra. You can only know some of these things by experience. We’re looking for a candidate who can respond to any challenges -- or curveballs -- all skills required to fit into an ensemble.” Winning a spot in the Colorado Symphony is not unlike earning a spot on a major sports team, adds Pierce. Musicians spend years perfecting their craft, most beginning as children, then

compete against the industry’s very best players. Success or failure is determined by one of the world’s fastest job interviews. Most last just ten minutes. Many musicians make dozens of attempts before landing the perfect position. Some never do. “There are more professional athletes in Denver than there are nationally auditioned professional musicians,” says Pierce. “The same people take our auditions as take the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra. There are only so many jobs out there. It’s a very exciting process, because we have a chance to identify someone who is possibly going to become a new member of the family, and you never know who it’s going to be.” Karl Fenner was already a member of the Colorado Symphony family in June 2012, when he took the most important audition of his career so far. He’d served in the bass section since October 2007, his first major job since dreams of playing professionally hatched at age 14. Like hundreds of others, he’d seen the post in The International Musician, the official news arm of the American Federation of Musicians, announcing that the Colorado Symphony was auditioning for Principal Bass. “All of the years of practicing, auditioning and performing inspired me to set my artistry to a higher level,” says Fenner. “I was ready to put myself on the line, to see how I would fare when I set myself against a pool of candidates and a

level of competition I hadn’t yet experienced.” Fenner spent six weeks working through a longer and more complicated list of audition excerpts he would be expected to play to perfection for a committee that included musicians he worked and played with every week. As the date drew near, Fenner purposely did not engage orchestra members he knew were involved with the audition process.

“The idea of going in and playing and advancing, without my colleagues knowing it was me, that was a major source of pride,” he says. “I wanted to go in and win completely on my own.” After two tension-filled days of competition against more than forty world-class players, Fenner won the job of Principal Bass. And the audition didn’t stop there: Like all new, nontenured members of the Colorado Symphony, Fenner faces a two-year, peer-led review process that will partly determine the shape of his career, and his future. “There’s an idea I repeat to myself and to my students: Never look at any audition as an endpoint,” Fenner says. “As important as auditions are, they’re just part of a larger process of growth and perseverance. I say, ‘I won Principal Bass of the Colorado Symphony on my 16th audition. But there were 14 I went to and didn’t win.’ Going to those improved the character of my playing. As you’re preparing for a career, a lot of emotional resilience is important. You have to be able to say that no matter what happens in those ten minutes, this is something you’re committed to until you’re successful.”

BRAMWELL TOVEY, conductor A musician of striking versatility, Grammy® Award-winning conductor Bramwell Tovey is acknowledged around the world for his artistic depth and his warm, charismatic personality on the podium. Tovey’s career as a conductor is uniquely enhanced by his work as a composer and pianist, lending him a remarkable musical perspective. His tenures as music director with the Vancouver Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonic and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras have been characterized by his expertise in operatic, choral, British and contemporary repertoire. Mr. Tovey, who is entering his fourteenth season as Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony, also continues his association with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and as founding host and conductor of the New York Philharmonic’s Summertime Classics series at Avery Fisher Hall. In 2008, both orchestras co-commissioned him to write a new work, the well-received Urban Runway, subsequently programmed by a number of orchestras in the US and Canada. He was honored with the Best Canadian Classical Composition Juno® Award in 2003 for his Requiem for a Charred Skull. An esteemed guest conductor, Mr. Tovey has worked with orchestras in the United States and Europe including the London Philharmonic, London Symphony and Frankfurt Radio Orchestra. In North America, Mr. Tovey has made guest appearances with the orchestras of Baltimore, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Seattle, and Montreal as well as ongoing performances with Toronto, where his trumpet concerto, commissioned by that orchestra, received its premiere in winter of 2009 as a preview of his first full-length opera “The Inventor” premiered in Calgary in winter 2011. Other recent engagements included visits to the Nashville and Montreal symphonies as well as a return to Australia where he has already worked with the symphonies in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. Touring is an important aspect of his artistic leadership with the Vancouver Symphony and in winter 2013 they embarked on a west coast US tour including visits to a number of brand new facilities in California and Nevada. Finally, to his already busy summer schedule this year he added return visits to the Philadelphia Orchestra in Saratoga, NY, and the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center. Mr. Tovey has been awarded honorary degrees, including a Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Music in London, honorary Doctorates from the universities of Winnipeg, Manitoba, British Columbia, and Kwantlen University College, as well as a Royal Conservatory of Music Fellowship in Toronto. In 1999, he received the M. Joan Chalmers National Award for Artistic Direction, a Canadian prize awarded to artists for outstanding contributions in the performing arts. In 2013, he also received an honorary appointment as an “Officer of the Order of Canada” for his outstanding achievements as a conductor and composer, and for his commitment to promoting new Canadian music.

MASTERWORKS BIOGRAPHIES DUAIN WOLFE, Colorado Symphony Chorus director Recently awarded two Gammys® for Best Choral Performance and Best Classical Recording, Duain Wolfe is founder and director of the Colorado Symphony Chorus and music director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus. This year marks Wolfe’s 30th season heading the Colorado Symphony Chorus. The Chorus provides vital support for numerous performances and radio broadcasts with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra each season, and has been featured at the Aspen Music Festival each summer for two decades. Wolfe—who is in his 20th season with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, America’s largest professional chorus, has collaborated with Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti, and the late Sir George Solti on numerous recordings with the Chicago Symphony, among them Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, which won the 1998 Grammy® for Best Opera Recording. Wolfe’s extensive musical accomplishments have resulted in numerous awards, including an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of Denver, the Bonfils Stanton Award in the Arts and Humanities, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in an Artistic Discipline and the Michael Korn Award for the Development of the Professional Choral Art. Wolfe is also founder/director of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, from which he retired in 1999 after 25 years; celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. For 20 years, Wolfe also was active with the Central City Opera Festival as chorus director and conductor, founding and directing the company’s young artist residence program, as well as its education and outreach programs. Wolfe’s additional accomplishments include directing and preparing choruses for Chicago’s Ravinia Festival, Vail’s Bravo! Festival, the Berkshire Choral Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. He has worked with Pinchas Zuckerman as Chorus Director for the Canadian National Arts Centre Orchestra for the past twelve years.

COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS The 2013-2014 Colorado Symphony concert season marks the 30th year for the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Symphony, the chorus has grown over the past three decades into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of over 200 volunteers — including some 15 charter members — joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts, to repeat critical acclaim. The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and the Grand Teton Music Festival, where it performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 under the direction of Zubin Mehta. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing such diverse repertoire as the Bernstein Mass, Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 8, Honegger’s unique Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), Britten’s Peter Grimes, the Berlioz Requiem, and the epic Schoenberg Gurre~Lieder, under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman. The Colorado Symphony Chorus has appeared at select public and special events, and has collaborated with many renowned Colorado arts ensembles, including the Colorado Children’s Chorale, Central City Opera, Opera Colorado and the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. The chorus sang at the 1991 opening gala for the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre; provided choral support for international opera star José Carreras; tenor Andrea Bocelli; and participated in the 1993 Papal Vigil when Pope John Paul II visited Denver. It has performed the works of a number of Colorado composers, including Samuel Lancaster and John Kuzma, and has had works written especially for it by Colorado Symphony composers-in-residence Jon Deak and Libby Larsen. The Colorado Symphony Chorus is featured on a recent NAXOS release of Roy Harris’ Symphony No. 4. In July 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the chorus, Duain Wolfe led the chorus on a three-country, two-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague, with a final presentation in Aspen! From Evergreen to Lochbuie, and Boulder to Castle Rock, singers travel each week to rehearsals and performances in Denver totaling about 80 a year. MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES BRAHMS: Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a Scored for two flutes and piccolo, oboes, clarinets, bassoons in pairs, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, timpani, triangle, and strings. Duration is 20 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on November 12-24, 2004, with Marin Alsop conducting. The well-loved Variations on a Theme of Haydn date from early in the career of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). Not the most confident of men, young Brahms was feeling the burden of the shadow of Beethoven, whose dominance in the symphonic field left the young composer reluctant to compose symphonies of his own. Instead, he busied himself with genres not tied to Beethoven’s name: sextets, serenades, and orchestral variations, and basing one on a theme by Haydn would have been a fine way to dodge comparison with Beethoven. By the time Brahms’ work was written in 1873, Haydn’s name and music were largely neglected, and even the now-popular symphonies were rarely performed. One of the few scholars to show an interest in the earlier master’s music was Karl Ferdinand Pohl, librarian of the Vienna Philharmonic and a good friend of Brahms. Through Pohl’s influence, Brahms learned about Haydn’s works. He studied many scores, and, in a set of wind partitas, he found a setting of a melody known as the St. Anthony Chorale. This stately theme became the heart of the Haydn Variations. The fact that scholars today are certain that the partita in question was not, in fact, the work of Haydn at all, but had only been mistakenly credited to his name, does nothing to diminish the magnificent imagination that Brahms brought to this simple and gracious theme. The Haydn Variations was first heard in an initial two-piano version at a private gathering in Bonn in August 1873, with Brahms and his dear friend Clara Schumann (Robert’s widow) performing. Brahms also prepared an orchestral setting of the work, which premiered November 2, 1873, with the composer himself conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. The piece was so widely acclaimed that Brahms found the courage to set to work again on a long-neglected score for a grand symphonic work that would become his first symphony. Today, the Haydn Variations stand amongst his most popular works, and it was also one of the composer’s personal favorites. Late in life, Brahms wrote, “I have always had a weakness for that piece and I think of it with more satisfaction than any other.”

Duration is 15 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was May 16-18, 2008, with Duain Wolfe conducting. Begun in 1869 but spending two full years on Brahms’ drawing board, Schicksalslied is a setting of a poem by Friedrich Hőlderlin, beginning with musing upon the heavenly bliss of the gods, then, by way of contrast, turning to the miseries of humanity. Brahms was impressed by Hőlderlin’s vision, and wished to give it musical expression, but found it artistically unsatisfying to

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES begin and end in torment. He considered repeating the opening stanza, so as to bring the work full circle and close in a mood of optimism. However, he gradually became persuaded that such was not Hőlderlin’s intention. In a search for compromise, Brahms closes out the choral portion as Hőlderlin dictated—in gloom—then with a solid key change from c minor to C major and an echo of the orchestral opening, allows the orchestra to suggest that perhaps all is not lost. It is a masterful stroke, balancing music and text, and only one of the greatest composers would have thought of it. Here, his Symphony No. 1 not yet complete, Brahms proves his mastery which soon the world would acknowledge. Schicksalslied premiered October 18, 1871, in Karlsruhe, where the orchestra’s music director, Hermann Levi, was a good friend of Brahms, and inclined to give a hearing to Brahms’ works. Not yet forty, the composer was still building his reputation. It would be the four symphonies of later years, and the championing of influential names in the Viennese musical community that would finally bring Brahms to the forefront of the musical world. MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43 Scored for flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons in pairs, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings. Duration is 44 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on May 5-7, 2004, with Peter Oundjian conducting. When a composer has written a work entitled Finlandia, it is easy to remember that he is Finnish by birth. Yet Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was not merely a native of that northern land. He was also a devoted patriot who used his compositional skills to speak out on behalf of Finnish pride and independence, and Finlandia is only one of many works directed to this cause. Amongst his other nationalistic compositions are the Lemminkainen Suite, Karelia, Luonnotar, Pohjola’s Daughter, two suites of Historic Scenes, and the grand choral symphony Kullervo. Less obviously a part of the effort, though equally eligible, is Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2. Sibelius completed and premiered the piece in Finland, but his Symphony No. 2 actually has roots in an Italian vacation. He spent February 1901, with his wife Aino and young daughters in Rapallo, Italy, where together with a holiday apartment, Sibelius also rented a working studio where he could tend to his music without the distractions of toddlers. Perhaps it was the Italian setting that caused the composer to imagine a scene direct from Mozart’s Don Giovanni: that of the infamous lover confronting in his last moments the avenging statue brought to life. With this dramatic image in mind, Sibelius sketched a dark theme that would eventually gain a central position in the symphony’s second movement. Yet darkness is not the dominant mood of the D-major symphony; there is also grandeur and glory and the spacious air of the Finnish countryside, an air that the Finns inhaled enthusiastically. The composer’s countrymen interpreted the symphony’s dark moments as symbolic of their oppressors, at this time in their troubled history, the powerful Russian Empire, though earlier it had been the Swedes. The symphony’s many bright passages—culminating in a blazingly heroic finale—were seen as foreshadowing their eventual freedom and triumph. The changeable tempos might be emblematic of how the tide of events can change unexpectedly, that though there may be setbacks, one must persevere, keeping in mind the bright sun on the horizon. In this case, glorious brass will usher that sun into clearer view. When Sibelius conducted the symphony’s premiere in Helsinki March 8, 1902, the sold-out house rose for a frenzied ovation. Three more performances were given in the next eight days, and in each case, every seat in the theater was occupied. The Symphony No. 2 was one of the greatest triumphs of Sibelius’ career. Through music, he had shown that even someone who was neither a military leader nor sports figure could yet stand as hero to his people.
