This season, hundreds of musicians will compete for positions with the Colorado Symphony. It all begins with the audition, the toughest job interview in music.

ustin Bartels has lost track of the number of times he’s been through it: Is it 45? 50? Since his first attempt at age 21, he’s boarded dozens of planes, perfected long lists of works, learned to steady his nerves and his attitude as he goes through a ritual familiar to all symphonic musicians: The Audition. “The audition is basically a microcosm of what the job is,” says Bartels. “The repertoire list you learn for the audition is a good indication of what you’ll play in the job. You’re expected to perform and execute, to listen and take direction, as if you already know everything.” Bartels won his current job as Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony in 2008, after four attempts. The first time, as a young music student at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he didn’t make it past the first round. During another try in 2003, his mind was
elsewhere – on his new fellowship with the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami, where he’d met Myroslava Ivanchenko, the violin player who would become his wife. Back at Boettcher Concert Hall again in 2005, he advanced to the semi-finals but faced an unexpected obstacle: the dressing on a sub sandwich he’d had for lunch had irritated his mouth, a major handicap for a brass player. “I never realized the potential negative effect of eating an hour before my audition. But these are the kinds of things you learn,” he says. “I went through a cycle. At first I had this naïveté and basically no experience. The next time I was sort of apathetic. And the third time there was a physical factor. I learned that you have to be totally prepared – mentally, physically. You can’t do anything stupid. It’s something you have to take very seriously every time.”

The Columbus Symphony, where he recently won the position of Principal Trumpet, was cutting health benefits. His wife was seven months pregnant. This time, he had to nail it. “I didn’t know how badly I wanted it until I played the audition,” he says. But a few notes into an excerpt from Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, blowing from behind a screen that separated him from the small, expert audience, he realized he couldn’t breathe. “I hadn’t been to Colorado in a while. I wasn’t prepared for the altitude. I stopped deliberately, which I think was a surprise to the committee, but when I started again, it was fine,” he says. “The common thought among musicians is that you can’t make a mistake, but that isn’t true. They’re listening for all kinds of things: style, character, the quality of sound. Note perfection is just one part of it.” Two rounds and 48 hours later, Bartels was named Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony. It was the kind of moment that propels professional musicians through years of intensive training, study, expense and sacrifice. Throughout the 2013/14 season, the Colorado Symphony will host dozens of players hoping to fill positions vacated by section changes and the retirement of a storied class of players, including cellists George Banks and Eric Bertoluzzi, violist Bobbie Hill, violinists Keith Howard and Gary Goble, and bassist Chet Hampson. On average, the Colorado Symphoy will field one hundred résumés for every opening, sent in
by professional musicians from around world. Of those, about sixty will fly to Denver, at their own expense, for the chance to perform for a panel of judges, including Music Director Andrew Litton, section leaders and senior members of the orchestra’s artistic committee. The audition process is purposely “blind” – players perform behind screens that conceal their appearance and identity; carpets on the floor obscure the sounds of players’ shoes on the stage, muting cues about gender, size and mobility. The question of who advances and who does not is answered in the ears, and minds, of the committee members. “The competition is the ultimate way we as an institution protect the artistic quality of our product, how we define and control the integrity of the people on our stage,” says Anthony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony. “The judges are listening for a complete musician, someone who is rhythmically impeccable, with perfect intonation, who plays in a stylistic manner consistent with the aesthetic of the composer and the excerpt. They must have knowledge of the repertoire, and what else is happening in the orchestra. You can only know some of these things by experience. We’re looking for a candidate who can respond to any challenges -- or curveballs -- all skills required to fit into an ensemble.” Winning a spot in the Colorado Symphony is not unlike earning a spot on a major sports team, adds Pierce. Musicians spend years perfecting their craft, most beginning as children, then

compete against the industry’s very best players. Success or failure is determined by one of the world’s fastest job interviews. Most last just ten minutes. Many musicians make dozens of attempts before landing the perfect position. Some never do. “There are more professional athletes in Denver than there are nationally auditioned professional musicians,” says Pierce. “The same people take our auditions as take the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra. There are only so many jobs out there. It’s a very exciting process, because we have a chance to identify someone who is possibly going to become a new member of the family, and you never know who it’s going to be.” Karl Fenner was already a member of the Colorado Symphony family in June 2012, when he took the most important audition of his career so far. He’d served in the bass section since October 2007, his first major job since dreams of playing professionally hatched at age 14. Like hundreds of others, he’d seen the post in The International Musician, the official news arm of the American Federation of Musicians, announcing that the Colorado Symphony was auditioning for Principal Bass. “All of the years of practicing, auditioning and performing inspired me to set my artistry to a higher level,” says Fenner. “I was ready to put myself on the line, to see how I would fare when I set myself against a pool of candidates and a

level of competition I hadn’t yet experienced.” Fenner spent six weeks working through a longer and more complicated list of audition excerpts he would be expected to play to perfection for a committee that included musicians he worked and played with every week. As the date drew near, Fenner purposely did not engage orchestra members he knew were involved with the audition process.

“The idea of going in and playing and advancing, without my colleagues knowing it was me, that was a major source of pride,” he says. “I wanted to go in and win completely on my own.” After two tension-filled days of competition against more than forty world-class players, Fenner won the job of Principal Bass. And the audition didn’t stop there: Like all new, nontenured members of the Colorado Symphony, Fenner faces a two-year, peer-led review process that will partly determine the shape of his career, and his future. “There’s an idea I repeat to myself and to my students: Never look at any audition as an endpoint,” Fenner says. “As important as auditions are, they’re just part of a larger process of growth and perseverance. I say, ‘I won Principal Bass of the Colorado Symphony on my 16th audition. But there were 14 I went to and didn’t win.’ Going to those improved the character of my playing. As you’re preparing for a career, a lot of emotional resilience is important. You have to be able to say that no matter what happens in those ten minutes, this is something you’re committed to until you’re successful.”

INSIDE THE SCORE BIOGRAPHIES SCOTT O’NEIL, resident conductor This is Scott O’Neil’s eighth season with the Colorado Symphony, and his third full season as resident conductor. O’Neil maintains a strong commitment to making music of the highest quality accessible to young audiences. He served as associate conductor for the Utah Symphony, which he joined in August 2000. O’Neil has guest conducted the Houston Symphony, Houston Youth Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Florida Philharmonic, Tulsa Philharmonic, Portland Symphony (Maine), the Lubbock Symphony, the Boise Philharmonic, the Salt Lake Symphony and the Columbus Symphony in Ohio. O’Neil studied piano performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory, served as the assistant conductor of the Eastman School Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Rice University, where he was the director of the Campanile Orchestra, a community/university orchestra. In 1999 he served as director of orchestras at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. In the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by the League of American Orchestras (LAO) to conduct an orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and advanced students from the University of Southern California in Synergy, a program created to promote young, contemporary composers. Also in the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by LAO to appear on the Conductor Preview with the Jacksonville Symphony. O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances on each of the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday Series.
CONRAD TAO, piano The only classical musician on Forbes’ 2011 “30 Under 30” list of people changing the world, 19-year-old Chinese-American pianist Conrad Tao was found playing children’s songs on the piano at 18 months of age. Born in Urbana, Illinois, he gave his first piano recital at age 4; four years later, he made his concerto debut performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A Major, K. 414. In June of 2011, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the Department of Education named Conrad a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, while the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts awarded him a YoungArts gold medal in music. Later that year, Conrad was named a Gilmore Young Artist, an honor awarded every two years highlighting the most promising American pianists of the new generation. In May of 2012, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Conrad is an exclusive EMI recording artist. His first album, released as an iTunes exclusive in February of 2012 as part of the “Juilliard Sessions” series, comprised works by Debussy, Stravinsky, and Conrad himself. His second record will also prominently feature Conrad’s own compositions, and is expected for release in 2013. Conrad currently attends the Columbia University/Juilliard School joint degree program and studies piano with Professors Yoheved Kaplinsky and Choong Mo Kang at Juilliard. He studies composition with Professor Christopher Theofanidis of Yale University, and studied violin with Ms. Catherine Cho for five years at Juilliard’s Pre-College Division. POPS BIOGRAPHIES ALAIN BOUBLIL, author/dramatist Alain Boublil is the author of the librettos and original lyrics for the musicals, La Révolution Française (1973), Les Misérables (1980), Miss Saigon (1989), Martin Guerre (1996) and The Pirate Queen (2006), all in collaboration with Claude-Michel Schönberg, as well as Marguerite(2008) with Michel Legrand, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer. Boublil is the recipient of two Tony Awards (Best Score and Best Book), two Grammys,® two Victoire de la Musique Awards and a Molière Award for Les Misérables. He received an Evening Standard Drama Award for Miss Saigon and a Laurence Olivier Award for Martin Guerre. He is the author/librettist of Abbacadabra with songs by Abba (1984), of the stage adaptation of Demy/ Legrand film, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, author of the play, The Diary of Adam and Eve (based upon short stories by Mark Twain), and the prize-winning French novel, Les dessous de soi. He cowrote the screenplay and co-produced the soundtrack of the Golden Globe winning and Oscar nominated film, Les Misérables. He has co-conceived and produces the Do You Hear The People Sing concert series, a symphonic evening of songs from Boublil and Schönberg musicals, currently playing in major U.S. cities and soon to tour Asia and Australia. He recently received a New York Chapter Honors Grammy award for his outstanding contribution to the creative community. He is currently working on a revised version of Martin Guerre to open in the U.K. in 2014/2015. Alain Boublil lives in New York with his wife, actress/singer Marie Zamora, and is the father of four sons.
CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHÖNBERG, composer Born in 1944 of Hungarian parents, Claude-Michel Schönberg began his career in France as a singer, writer and producer of pop songs. In collaboration with Alain Boublil he is the book co-writer and the composer of La Révolution Française, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Martin Guerre and The Pirate Queen. In 2008 his new musical, Marguerite, in collaboration with Alain Boublil, Michel Legrand and Herbert Kretzmer opened at the Haymarket Theatre in London. Claude-Michel has supervised overseas productions and co-produced several international cast albums of his shows. In 2001 he composed his first ballet score, Wuthering Heights, which was created by the Northern Ballet in 2002. His ballet, Cleopatra, which opened in 2011, was his second collaboration with David Nixon and his seventh complete score. In 2012 Claude-Michel co-wrote the screenplay and reconceived the music for the Les Misérables musical movie. Golden Globe winner, Oscar nominee and recent Grammy® award winner for outstanding contribution to the creative community, Mr. Schönberg married the English ballerina, Charlotte Talbot, in 2003. He is the father of one son and two daughters.

POPS BIOGRAPHIES DALE RIELING, conductor Dale was the Musical Supervisor and Musical Director for the Broadway production of Les Misérables (1997-2003). He also supervised and/or music directed the First National, Third National and International tours of Les Misérables. Also on Broadway, he music directed Miss Saigon and was the associate conductor for Mary Poppins. Other productions: The Merry Widow, She Loves Me, Hairspray, The Three Musketeers, The Full Monty, Thoroughly Modern Mille, Nine, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Dracula: A Chamber Musical, The Will Rogers Follies, Married Alive, Into The Woods, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Footloose, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, A Wonderful Life, Cinderella, Gypsy, My One and Only, Sweet Charity, Peter Pan, and Hello, Dolly! starring Michele Lee. ERIC KUNZE, vocals Eric has had the rare pleasure of starring on Broadway in leading roles for the better part of his professional career. Mr. Kunze recently received an IRNE Award for his performance as “The Man” in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind. Prior to that he starred in the title role of the national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar (with Carl Anderson). Broadway credits: “Marius” in Les Misérables (opposite Lea Salonga), “Chris” in Miss Saigon and “Joe Hardy” in Damn Yankees (with Jerry Lewis), was recently “Prince Eric” in the West Coast premier of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. He has received rave reviews for the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Los Angeles, KC Starlight, Sacramento Music Circus and Boston, earning him an IRNE award for best actor). POPS BIOGRAPHIES KATHY VOYTKO, vocals Kathy appeared on Broadway in Oklahoma!, and Nine starring Antonio Banderras and Chita Rivera, originated the role of Ariadne opposite Nathan Lane in the The Frogs, standby Diana in the Pulitzer Prize winning Next to Normal, and the standby Grania in The Pirate Queen. Kathy had the great pleasure of performing at Carnegie Hall and The Royal Albert Hall in London with the concert and live recording of Kristina. She has toured the U.S. as Christine Daaé-Phantom of the Opera, soloist-The Music of Andrew Lloyd Weber, and was chosen by Hal Prince to play Eva Peron-25th anniversary tour of Evita. In Chicago she was honored with the Joseph Jefferson Award for Polly in Crazy for You and nominations for Fantine-Les Misérables, the maidPutting it Together, and Clara-Passion. Kathy is happily married to Broadway actor John Cudia; they are the proud parents of Alena and Evelyn.
MARIE ZAMORA, vocals Marie trained as a classical soprano and ballet dancer in France before turning to musical theatre. As a singer and actress, Marie has performed principal roles across the globe, including the Paris Cosette in Les Misérables, Kate in Kiss Me, Kate, Sina Marnis in Pirandello’s Les Nouvelles de Sicile, Mrs. Barnum in Barnum, Cornelia in La Comtesse Dracula and Eugenie in Le Voyage de Mozart à Prague. As a concert soloist Marie performed and travelled internationally (Russia, Japan, Israel…) with composer Michel Legrand. She has performed as Cosette in the Hey Mr. Producer! concert at the Lyceum Theatre in London, celebrating 25 years of Cameron Mackintosh’s career. She is an original principal in the company of Do You Hear The People Sing, a symphonic concert series of the works of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg currently touring the U.S. and soon to embark on an Asian Tour. Other concert work includes Orchestre Colonne (Salle Pleyel, Paris and Opera de Massy), Divas Simply Singing (Los Angeles) alongside Roberta Flack, Marie Zamora at Joe’s Pub (NYC) and her benefit concert for LFNY. She recorded an album of songs from musicals and films including duets with Michael Ball. Marie was the co-book writer and director of the 2010 Czech version of the musical Marguerite by Michel Legrand, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg at the National Moravian-Silesian theatre in Ostrava. She has appeared in the films Une Volee d’Escalier directed by Dominique Tabuteau, Cassandra’s Dream directed by Woody Allen and in a flash cameo in the film of Les Misérables. COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS The 2013-2014 Colorado Symphony concert season marks the 30th year for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Symphony, the chorus has grown over the past three decades into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of over 200 volunteers — including some 15 charter members — joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts, to repeat critical acclaim. The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and the Grand Teton Music Festival, where it performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 under the direction of Zubin Mehta. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing such diverse repertoire as the Bernstein Mass, Mahler ’s massive Symphony No. 8, Honegger ’s unique Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), Britten’s Peter Grimes, the Berlioz Requiem, and the epic Schoenberg Gurre~Lieder, under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman. The Colorado Symphony Chorus has appeared at select public and special events, and has collaborated with many renowned Colorado arts ensembles, including the Colorado Children’s Chorale, Central City Opera, Opera Colorado and the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. The chorus sang at the 1991 opening gala for the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre; provided choral support for international opera star José Carreras, tenor Andrea Bocelli; and participated in the 1993 Papal Vigil when Pope John Paul II visited Denver. It has performed the works of a number of Colorado composers, including Samuel Lancaster and John Kuzma, and has had works written especially for it by CSO composers-in-residence Jon Deak and Libby Larsen. The CSO Chorus is featured on a recent NAXOS release of Roy Harris’ Symphony No. 4. In July 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the chorus, Duain Wolfe led the chorus on a 3-country, 2-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague, with a final presentation in Aspen! From Evergreen to Lochbuie, and Boulder to Castle Rock, singers travel each week to rehearsals and performances in Denver totaling about 80 a year. COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS MARY LOUISE BURKE, associate chorus director Mary Louise Burke is in her 20th season as Associate Chorus Director of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. In addition to assisting Duain Wolfe, she also prepares the chorus for the annual performances of Too Hot Too Handel and various Colorado Symphony pops concerts and special chorus projects. She is also Associate Director of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, conducting the Concert Choir and acting as vocal coach for the Chorale. With an expertise in vocal technique, Ms. Burke frequently does seminars in vocal and choral techniques for area church and community choirs. She teaches classes in “Find Your Authentic Voice” at the University of Denver and is a popular adjudicator and clinician throughout the Rocky Mountain region. A mezzo-soprano, Ms. Burke has done solo and recital work in the metro area and performed for many seasons with Central City Opera’s outreach program. She has a Doctorate in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado.
