WELCOME Welcome back to Boettcher Concert Hall, home of the Colorado Symphony! As we launch the 2014/15 season, we’re thrilled by all that awaits in the months ahead, including masterful performances from the most beloved names in symphonic music. Many of these superstars have shared stages and years of friendship with Andrew Litton, who returns for his second full season as Music Director. We’re also excited about new programming initiatives, including the eclectic Colorado Symphony Presents contemporary series launching in October. (Learn more about that on page 23.) Also in October, the Colorado Symphony Chorus celebrates thirty years of excellence; see page 18 for an interview with founder and director Duain Wolfe, recently lauded as one of the country’s great choral directors by our partners at Colorado Public Radio. As we move excitedly into fall, we reflect on the inspirational successes of the 2013/14 season.

◆ Our musicians reached new levels of artistic achievement, performing a range of musical styles at Boettcher as well as venues across the Front Range, including Red Rocks, where we delighted more than 50,000 music lovers this summer.

◆ We enjoyed creative and strategic partnerships with the leading cultural organizations and businesses in Colorado, including the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado Rockies, DaVita, Inc., and Arrow Electronics.

◆ In May, we enjoyed the most successful Colorado Symphony Ball in the event’s twentyone year history, generating $1.1 million in support for the only full-time professional orchestra in the Rocky Mountain West.

If you listen closely, you will hear A-R-R-O-W spelled in musical notes, while the rhythm spells “arrow” in Morse code. The composition debuted in 2013 and we now use it as our musical logo in advertisements and on our website. This year, maestro O’Neil expanded the original overture into a fuller orchestral composition. Together, we have created a new partnership committed to innovation. Crescendo The Colorado Symphony Chorus Celebrates Thirty Years

It was a big summer for the Colorado Symphony Chorus. In August, the choir was the only Colorado-based ensemble to take the stage at the prestigious Aspen Music Festival. The reason for this high honor? It has a lot to do with the talent and dedication of 180 volunteer singers. It also has a lot to do with Director Duain Wolfe. 18 SOUNDINGS 2014/15 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

uain Wolfe is one of the best choral conductors in the world,” said Alan Fletcher, Aspen Music Festival CEO and president, in an interview with Colorado Public Radio. Wolfe has loomed large for generations of Colorado vocalists, nurturing and lifting voices of every age. In 1974, he founded the Colorado Children’s Chorale and, ten years later, the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Wolfe is also well known for his work with the Chicago Symphony Chorus. This season, Wolfe and the Colorado Symphony Chorus celebrate thirty years with a slate of special programs that will fill Boettcher Concert Hall with bombastic, joyful noise. When the season opens September 18 and 19, Wolfe joins Music Director Andrew Litton on stage to lead Beethoven Symphony No. 9, alongside soloists Kelley O’Connor, John Mac Master, and others. During the Colorado Symphony Chorus 30th Anniversary Gala on October 18, the ensemble will thrill audiences with the glorious music of Vaughan Williams, Mendelssohn, Moussorgsky, and Mozart as well as excerpts from the Chorus’ signature pieces, including Verdi’s Requiem and Orff’s Carmina Burana. Of course, the Chorus will return for the holiday classic, A Colorado Christmas, as well as a dramatic rendition of Puccini’s Tosca in February 2015. With so much to sing about this season, our partners at Colorado Public Radio invited Wolfe on the air to discuss highlights of the Chorus’ history with Chloe Veltman, CPR arts editor. Here’s an excerpt from their conversation. You founded the Colorado Symphony Chorus in 1984. Was it typical at that time for orchestras around the country to be founding choruses and why was it important for the Colorado Symphony? Duain Wolfe: There were very few at the time, and there are still very few that actually belong to the orchestra. Most of the time, choruses are founded by somebody that is simply interested and then orchestras engage

those choruses. Maestro Gaetano Delogu wanted his own chorus so that it would be part of the musical culture of the symphony, and therefor would be part of the same vision and on the same page musically. You’re the longtime head of two other important choruses: the Grammy®-award winning Chicago Symphony Chorus and the Colorado Children’s Chorale. You’ve arguably done your most visible work with these choruses. Why doesn’t the Colorado Symphony get the accolades that the other ensembles you work with get? Duain Wolfe: I assume some of it has to do with provincialism. We think of great organizations coming out of really big cities. So there’s an assumption always of what could come out of Colorado. Well the fact is, surprising things come up. We have a lot to be proud of, we just need to find ways to get the rest of the world to find out. We need to do more recordings, and with Music Director Andrew Litton it looks like we’re going to be doing that. To hear the full interview, visit www.cpr.org. Staff Spotlight ROBERT NEU

The Colorado Symphony is pleased to introduce Robert Neu, our new Senior Vice President of Artistic Strategy. Neu will serve as part of a creative team that includes Andrew Litton, Music Director, and Anthony Pierce, Senior Vice President of Contemporary Programming. Recognized as a creative visionary as well as an effective administrator, Neu brings a wealth of experience, talent and resources to the Colorado Symphony. Most recently, he served as Vice President and General Manager of the Minnesota Orchestra, a position he held for nineteen years. In the world of performing arts, Neu is a bona-fide Renaissance Man: An active theater creator and director with more than sixty productions to his credit; a former professional clarinetist and graduate of the Julliard School; an active community volunteer and educator. Please join us in welcoming Robert Neu. You’ll be seeing, and hearing, a lot from him this season season (for starters, he’ll direct a semi-staged Tosca in February ) and in the future.. What are you most looking forward to in your new role with the Colorado Symphony? Collaborating with your wonderful musicians, staff, Board of Trustees and music director — all towards the goal of making this outstanding orchestra an essential part of the community. You will work closely with Music Director Andrew Litton, an old friend and long-time colleague. Andrew and I have known each other since we were college classmates and I’ve had the great good fortune to collaborate with him the past twelve years for the Minnesota Orchestra’s Sommerfest. Andrew and I share similar tastes and sensibilities, but we’re still able to challenge and prod each other in a positive way that makes us both think harder and be more creative. And for my money, Andrew is one of the very finest American conductors on the scene today. I am extremely proud to work with him. What do you find to be special about the Colorado Symphony? I find the incredibly collaborative spirit of the musicians to be very refreshing and exciting. Working together is the only way to succeed! Of course, Music Director Andrew Litton is an integral part of that spirit, as are the staff and board. What are the opportunities inherent in working in Boettcher Concert Hall, an inthe-round venue? Of course, it’s the intimacy of the space that

is so appealing. I also find it very appealing that so many of the Denver arts organizations are all in that beautiful arts center. I think that synergy is exciting! Your experience is so rich and varied. What is your first love -- musical theater, opera, plays? I like to say that whatever I’m working on at the time is my favorite. Actually, symphonic music was my first love and my original entry point into the arts. And we always remember our first love, right? What excites you about coming to Denver? The natural beauty, of course; the fact that it’s warmer than Minneapolis(!). I just really enjoy the atmosphere of the city and I always have. I’ve been a frequent visitor to Denver since I was a kid as I had a favorite aunt and uncle that lived in the area. Do you have much time for the clarinet these days? Not a moment. I haven’t touched it in years and if I did so now I know I would be very depressed. It’s best left silent. Like Minneapolis, Denver is a thriving arts town. But people here also love sports. Are you prepared to become a Broncos fan? Bad news: I’m not a big sports guy. Good news: That means I don’t have to wean myself away from the Vikings. Musician Spotlight JASON SHAFER

At 27, Principal Clarinet player Jason Shafer is one of the younger members of the Colorado Symphony, but his experience is already deep. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he spent four years as a fellow with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach and has appeared in guest principal roles with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony. Shafer has also been a member of Idaho’s Sun Valley Summer Symphony since 2012. How has your role within the orchestra changed since you became Principal Clarinet? In every ensemble I’ve ever played with, I’ve found that as the years go on, I’m able to better understand the organization and therefore contribute in more meaningful ways to its success. I’m excited to be a part of some of the new ways we are going to help audiences make a personal connection to “classical” music and feel more involved with our concerts. What’s one thing about the Colorado Symphony that might surprise people? The Colorado Symphony has the most positive, open-minded, and supportive musicians and staff of any group I’ve played with. From my very first day here, I was amazed at the love that the musicians and the staff have for their orchestra; their willingness to work “above and beyond” to support the organization is incredible. How about a surprise about you? I have a black belt in a martial art form known as Tai-Jitsu! I’ve always been a relatively peaceful person, but learning martial arts when I was younger really helped me build my confidence. What do you do for fun in Denver? I enjoy hiking on the beautiful trails around Denver and Boulder. I still haven’t tried any

of the winter activities (like skiing) for fear of breaking a hand or finger. I’m a rather clumsy person, despite the dexterity required for playing an instrument, but perhaps I will try them out someday soon! Besides that, I’m trying to learn how to cook a bit better. I’m pretty good at risotto so far! What advice would you give to a young person just starting out in a career in music? I tell all of my students that they should strive to have both perseverance and openmindedness. The combination of the two is so important; perseverance helps you get through the inevitable disappointments, and open-mindedness helps you learn new methods of practicing and also think clearly when you have to make tough decisions. Working to have both of these qualities will help you manage the hardest parts of a musical career, and make the decisions that are right for you. There are many different ways in which music can be a part of your life and career, and by working hard with an open mind, you will eventually find the right way for your love of music to fit into your life. POPS BIOGRAPHIES SCOTT O’NEIL, resident conductor This is Scott O’Neil’s ninth season with the Colorado Symphony, and his fourth full season as resident conductor. O’Neil maintains a strong commitment to making music of the highest quality accessible to young audiences. He served as associate conductor for the Utah Symphony, which he joined in August 2000. O’Neil studied piano performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory, served as the assistant conductor of the Eastman School Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Rice University, where he was the director of the Campanile Orchestra, a community/university orchestra. In the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by the League of American Orchestras (LAO) to conduct an orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and advanced students from the University of Southern California in Synergy, a program created to promote young, contemporary composers. O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances on each of the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday Series.

RANDY ROGEL, writer Randy has won three Emmy Awards (nominated for ten), a Peabody Award, two Annie Awards, three Leo Awards, and the Ovation Award. He recently co-wrote the hit song Poisonous Love for Kristen Chenoweth with John Powell for the major motion picture Rio 2. He was show-runner for the animated series 1001 Nights and won Leo awards for Writing and Best Animated Series. At Disney, Randy wrote songs and scripts for the animated movies Peter Pan-Return to Neverland, Cinderella II, Cinderella III, Winnie the Pooh, Around the World in Eighty Days, The Three Musketeers, and 101 Dalmatians II. Randy spent nine years on staff at Warner Bros. Animation where he began as an original writer on the Batman series and then joined the staff of Steven Spielberg’s Animaniacs, for which wrote most of the songs and many of the scripts. Randy is a West Point graduate with ten years service as an officer in the combat arms. He has a B.S. in Engineering from the academy and a Masters Degree in International Relations from Boston University.

POPS BIOGRAPHIES ROB PAULSEN, voice actor Born in Detroit, Rob Paulsen spent his childhood in Livonia and Rochester, attending Junior and Senior high school in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Rob loved cartoons like most kids but aspired to be a professional hockey player. “Fortunately, thanks to some big, strong, kid from Winnipeg who drilled me so hard my ears are still ringing, I learned around the age 18 I had neither the talent nor the temperament to make a living playing hockey. So, I turned to my other passions: singing and acting.” The goal of bringing absolute believability to a character, live-action or animated, is what every actor strives for. Those who are committed to their career and who combine experience, passion and skill are likely to succeed. With over 2,000 half-hours of animation credits, Rob’s versatility shines in his starring roles as the voices of Donatello (Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Yakko Warner, Pinky and Dr. Scratch ‘n’ Sniff in the Peabody and two-time Emmy award-winning series Animaniacs. As passionate about “paying it forward” as he is about his lucrative career, Rob supports various charities, particularly those benefiting children and military veterans. In his leisure time, Rob enjoys golf, cruising the PCH, and occasionally lacing up his skates for another chance to relive his past glory on the rink. JESS HARNELL, voice actor Named by Variety magazine as one of the top ten voice actors in the business, the Emmy-nominated Jess Harnell is one of the best and busiest. Jess has appeared on practically every animated series on TV and has had dozens of starring roles, he has dozens of starring roles, including “Captain Hero” on Drawn Together, Chilly and The Wicked King on Doc McStuffins, Cedri” on Sofia The First and of course Wakko on Animaniacs. Jess’ voice has been heard on countless popular prime time series as well, including announcing shows such as America’s Funniest Home Videos for the last 14 years. Jess is currently the lead singer in the acclaimed 80’s metal/pop mash-up band and Youtube sensation “Rock Sugar,” sharing stages with such rock legends as AC/DC, Slash and Aerosmith. Just a few of Jess’ film credits include Finding Nemo, the Toy Story franchise, and Up as well as his being the only voice actor to voice two major characters in the Transformers films. One of the top celebrity voice matches in the business, Jess perfectly mimics over 150 celebrities—both speaking and singing—from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Ozzy Osbourne, Elvis Presley to all four Beatles, Albert Brooks to Christopher Walken, Steve Perry to Willie Nelson and Pee Wee Herman to Rodney Dangerfield. “If it’s related at all to the voice, I’d like to believe I can do it. And if I can’t, I’ll work on it until I figure out a way that I can.”

POPS BIOGRAPHIES TRESS MacNEILLE, voice actor Tress is enjoying a long and varied career in the wonderful world of voiceover acting. She is best known for her performances as Dot in Animaniacs and Babs Bunny in Tiny Toon Adventures, as Daisy Duck, The Queen of Hearts, Chip (of ‘n Dale), Merryweather (The Fairy Godmother) and many other iconic voices for Disney as well as Mom and other character voices for Futurama. Wilma Flintstone, Rosie the Robot, Rugrats, The Land Before Time, Veggie Tales, Peabody and Sherman and numerous other film and TV projects all keep Tress happily occupied. This year Tress celebrates over 25 years providing hundreds of character voices, vocals and impressions for The Simpsons. Tress’ Peabody Award is safely encased in Lucite.

JULIE AND STEVE BERNSTEIN, composers Composers of concert music and music for television and films, Julie and Steve Bernstein have worked together and separately on hundreds of episodes of TV animation. They’ve been recognized for their work with nine Emmys. Their music for animation includes Animaniacs, Pinky & the Brain, Freakazoid, Histeria!, The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries, Baby Looney Tunes, Make Way for Noddy, Tiny Toon Adventures, Toonsylvania and more. The Bernsteins co-composed the scores for the features “Would I Lie to You?”, “Song of David”, “Tom and Jerry Blast Off to Mars”, “Baby Looney Tunes: Egg-‐straordinary Adventure” and the Animaniacs feature “Wakko’s Wish”. Steve’s orchestrations can be heard in the films The Amazing Spiderman, Spiderman 3, The Spiderwick Chronicles and the non-‐spider-‐themed movies Skyfall, The Perfect Storm, Windtalkers, Supernova and others. Julie’s arrangement of Joni Mitchell’s “Little Green” for the Turtle Island String quartet and Tierney Sutton is featured on Ms. Sutton’s Grammy®-‐nominated CD After Blue. Steve and Julie produced the CD Tweety’s High-‐Flying Adventure, featuring their music and lyrics alongside those of Randy Rogel’s. Julie and Steve have enjoyed many fine performances of their orchestral, choral and chamber concert works. Most recently, their first concert music collaboration, “Snapshots”, received Honorable Mention in the IAWM’s Miriam Gideon composition competition. SUSAN EGAN, vocals Susan Egan has traversed all four corners of the entertainment industry, making powerful impressions in theatre, film, television and music. Most recently, Susan starred on Broadway as Thoroughly Modern Millie. She has also won critical acclaim as Broadway’s (longest-running) “Sally Bowles” in Cabaret, in Triumph of Love and State Fair, and most notably, as the original “Belle” in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Tony and Drama Desk noms.). Regionally, Egan starred alongside Carol Burnett in “Putting It Together” and Tommy Tune in the national tour of Bye, Bye Birdie. He has been a soloist with some of the world’s finest orchestras, including Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, and Cleveland Orchestra. He has appeared with more than 125 orchestras worldwide and most major Pops orchestras in America including Philly Pops, Boston Pops and NY Pops at Carnegie Hall. LaBrecque thrilled theater audiences as The Phantom and Raoul, in The Phantom of the Opera. He starred in the original cast of the Harold Prince Broadway revival of Showboat and toured nationally with Les Misérables. He was also featured in Oscar Hammerstein’s 100th birthday celebration at the Gershwin Theatre. POPS BIOGRAPHIES JAMES KNAPP, artistic director, Denver Gay Men’s Chorus With 30 years of choral conducting experience with colleges, churches and community choruses, James Knapp is now in his second season leading the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus and Out Loud: The Colorado Springs Men’s Chorus to greater levels of artistic and musical excellence. James, who is the Artistic Director Emeritus of the Bayou City Performing Arts, guided the Gay Men’s Chorus of Houston, the Bayou City Women’s Chorus and the Bayou City Chorale for eight years with tremendous success. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Fredonia State University, a diploma from the Mozarteum Conservatory of Music in Salzburg and a Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin. His choirs have appeared at regional conventions such as the American Choral Director’s Association and the Texas Choral Directors Association. They have also appeared with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra in the Palace of St Petersburg Chamber Music Festival in Russia. Additionally, he conducted the featured choir at the International Church Music Festival in Coventry, England with Sir David Willcocks. His choirs have been heard on NPR affiliate stations in performances of the Brahms Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and portions of I Am Harvey Milk. His Singspiration Singers won first prize in a national gospel symposium for their performance and interpretation of gospel music. Mr. Knapp is an educator, performance adjudicator, clinician and has presided over choral workshops in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Italy, England, Thailand and throughout the United States.

THE DENVER GAY MEN’S CHORUS

The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus was established in 1982 with a passionate commitment to LGBT people, to build community and foster acceptance, diversity and tolerance thorough music. It was the first openly gay arts organization in Denver and the Rocky Mountain region. This premier, auditioned 100-voice community chorus has performed more than 125 concerts in its 32-year history, remaining true to its mission of entertaining, educating, inspiring and empowering audiences. DGMC has collaborated with artists such as Margaret Cho, Ann Hampton Callaway, and the Colorado Symphony and has worked with the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the University of Denver, Lamont School of Music. DGMC has recorded two commercial CDs and has a devoted commitment to the commissioning of new works, the most notable being I Am Harvey Milk by Broadway’s Andrew Lippa. POPS BIOGRAPHIES three soloists, men’s chorus and orchestra premiered last June at Gates Concert Hall to a sold out audience receiving high critical acclaim. Most recently, Mayor Michael B. Hancock proclaiming June 12, 2014 as Denver Gay Men’s Chorus Day honored the chorus as a respected leader in the arts community, significantly enriching the cultural life of the city while serving as a messenger of social justice and change. The chorus produces three concert series per season and sings over 15 community outreach events each year. DGMC is a member of GALA Choruses, a LGBT choral organization made up of over 180 choruses and 10,000 singers worldwide.

POPS BIOGRAPHIES THE DENVER WOMEN’S CHORUS

The Denver Women’s Chorus was founded in 1984 from an idea that Carol White had with Shirley Guenthner and a few friends. They wanted to create a woman’s chorus of musical excellence that was open to all women that were either Lesbian or respectful of Lesbianism. The Women’s Chorus is now a member of the Rocky Mountain Arts Association and exist to build community through music. Although their origins lie in the lesbian community, the Chorus is open to everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. They are a community chorus of women with equal interests in the excellence of our music and performances, as well as in the communities in which we live. DWC was the first women’s chorus to perform at a GALA festival in 1986, and has performed at each of the following 7 GALA Festivals, National Conferences, Local Festivals, Public Schools, across the state and in major concert halls across the country, including Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York. DWC has been proud to bring new music to the women’s choral community through more than 7 original commissions and many compositions and arrangements written specifically for and often by the chorus. The Denver Women’s Chorus recorded 4 CDs for the public including Where I Live, a major work on breast cancer. They have sung all types of music from Classical, Madrigal and Modern to Jazz, Folk and Blues, from Rock, Pop and Broadway to Barbershop, Chants and Bulgarian. DWC has not been limited by a style of music but rather use every style to convey a message and give the audience an experience that they will remember. They tell stories about environmental, social, health and how they are all women’s issues. The Chorus is rich in its diversity with the eldest members who have lived a lifetime and young women who are just starting their lives. They have families that include spouses, wives, husbands, children, parents, friends and pets. DWC believes that music should challenge and inspire us towards individual growth and dynamic engagement in enriching the entire community; the chorus, our audience, and beyond.
