WELCOME
O
n behalf of my fellow musicians, the staff and the board of trustees of the Colorado Symphony, I would like to welcome you to Boettcher Concert Hall. I have been Principal Percussionist since 1985 and have enjoyed participating in the musical growth of this fabulous orchestra. I have been privileged to serve on many different committees including the Artistic, Negotiating, Finance and Orchestra Committees. It is great to see the collaborative model working so well for the Colorado Symphony. We are very excited to have Andrew Litton as our new Music Director and look forward to many years of wonderful music-making with him. One of the enjoyable aspects of my job is the widely diverse programming that we offer. We could be playing a Mahler symphony one day and collaborating with DeVotchka the next. Our season offers something for everyone, from classical to rock and roll, and everything in between. Our musicians are extremely versatile and easily switch hats as needed. Part of my job is to represent the Colorado Symphony in a small group that performs chamber music in schools for children throughout the Denver metropolitan area. It’s great to see the joy and surprise in the kids’ faces as they hear the instruments up close. For some of these children, this is their first exposure to symphonic music. Our goal is to develop life-long listeners with a love for live performances. We rehearse during the day in an empty hall and are always thrilled to play for live audiences. Thank you for being here. We appreciate your attendance and your support of the Colorado Symphony.
John Kinzie Principal Percussion

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Arrow Electronics
W
hen Arrow Electronics consolidated its headquarters in metro Denver in late 2011, we quickly established a partnership with the Colorado Symphony. We did this out of a fundamental conviction that the creative process in the arts and innovation in Arrow’s world of electronics are intrinsically connected. We strive to guide the symphony forward as it enriches our community. And through our support we hope to set an example to our 17,000 employees in Colorado and around the world to not only enjoy the arts, but to apply the same spirit of innovation and creativity to their own work and lives. We are proud to sponsor Colorado Symphony performances as the orchestra extends its reach deeper into Denver and across Colorado. But Arrow’s investment goes beyond a typical corporate sponsorship. We commissioned a new musical composition that would reflect the company’s commitment to innovation. What emerged was an original piece representing the Arrow brand, “Five Years Out.” In this piece, Colorado Symphony Resident Conductor Scott O’Neil utilizes themes of technology and a five-note scale to generate the new refrain for Arrow’s “Five Years Out” brand. If you listen closely, you will hear A-R-R-O-W spelled in musical notes, while the rhythm spells “arrow” in Morse code. The composition debuted in 2013 and we now use it as our musical logo in advertisements and on our website. Maestro O’Neil is working to expand the original overture into a full orchestral composition. Together, we have created a new partnership committed to innovation. We hope this partnership sustains not only Arrow and the CSO, but also the community we share. Thank you for joining us in supporting the Colorado Symphony.

The Future in Mind Why is education so important to the Colorado Symphony? The answer is a no brainer. The musicians of the Colorado Symphony are a brainy bunch. Every single member of the orchestra has spent countless hours studying and practicing, learning scores and perfecting a range of skills that culminate in flawless performances. According to recent research, musicians are brainy because they play music – an idea with exciting implications for the future of education and the performing arts. Over the past decade, a mountain of data has illustrated the sometimes surprising ways in which music shapes us, starting with our brains. Moving along a continuum that gets stronger with time, music can positively affect everything from IQ to mood. For example: •C hildren with three or more years of training on a musical instrument demonstrate advanced motor skills, verbal and nonverbal reasoning, and auditory discrimination, according to a 2008 study by researchers at Harvard University and Boston College. • S cores on the SAT rise incrementally for each year of high school music instruction, according to the College Board. •M usicians who practice daily scored significantly higher on tests of mental function than people with little or no musical training, according to a study by St. Andrew’s in Scotland, suggesting that even moderate amounts of musical activity have a positive impact on brain function. Of course, music’s benefit extends beyond the brain. Young people who participate in music activities in and outside of the classroom do better in school, are more likely to

graduate on time and attend college. Whether or not a child follows a path leading to an orchestra chair or another career in music, early exposure to music can increase their chances for success and enjoyment at every stage of life. Knowing all of this, can you imagine what would happen if quality music education were available to every single boy and girl in Denver and across Colorado? How might our future work force, our culture, our city look, sound and function if every citizen had access to the transformative power of music? As a resource and partner to the community, the Colorado Symphony is actively engaged with these and other questions. Education has been central to the orchestra’s mission for more than seventy years, as field trips to Boettcher Concert Hall have been a tradition for generations. Music education is key to living our mission, enriching our community – and securing our future. How do we serve the youth, and the future, by providing access to high-quality music education that supports whole-child development? How do we support the schools, teachers and school districts by providing tools and experiences that build on
the school-day experience? And how do we ensure the future of the Colorado Symphony by engaging new audiences in ways that are exciting, relevant and fun? One way is to continue to build on the success of our highly popular Colorado Symphony Kids program, which is informed by music teachers as well district arts coordinators from across metro Denver. This season, we welcomed more than 30,000 elementary, middle and high school students to Boettcher Concert Hall, with concerts that span everything from the music of Latin America and French Impressionism to math and the natural cycles of life. As funding for field trips and arts-based experiences has declined in recent years, our commitment to students of all backgrounds has increased. Colorado Symphony youth concerts are provided at no cost to schools with a high percentage of Title I students, one of the leading indicators of childhood poverty. More than 60% of students who attend Colorado Symphony Kids youth concerts receive scholarships; transportation assistance is also available to qualifying schools. The response from teachers is overwhelmingly positive. continued on page 18

benefit in so many ways far beyond the obvious ones. I have been bringing students to hear you for nearly ten years and I have students in high school and beyond who come to me and tell me, ‘I remember when you took us to hear the symphony. That was awesome!!!’” Exciting things are ahead, as the Colorado Symphony launches two initiatives designed to broaden and deepen our impact on Colorado youth. First piloted in December in partnership with Denver TV8, the Distance Learning Project will eventually provide broadcasts of youth concerts to teachers and classrooms, creating a virtual experience of a live youth concert; eventually, we envision making these broadcast available to schools in rural and remote communities. And in February at Cole Arts and Science Academy in Five Points, we will launch the Very Young Composers, which teaches students as young as eight to create original pieces of music, using expressive tools available to all children. These compositions are then performed for students, teachers and family by professional orchestra musicians. Originally developed by bassist Jon Deak, former CSO

Composer in Residence and children’s advocate at the New York Philharmonic, the Very Young Composers is currently active at schools in Manhattan and around the world. In Denver, the Colorado Symphony will join with the Playground Ensemble, composed of faculty from Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, to bring the program to more students and schools. We have lots of ideas about why these programs are important: supporting the whole-child development of the youth, educators and families of our community is not only good for our community, it’s good for the future of symphonic music. Who knows what will happen when we make these types of programs available to more and more children? When we all do our part to support the development of our children, starting with their young minds – and their brains? We can’t wait to find out.

MIDORI, violin Since her debut at the age of 11 with the New York Philharmonic 31 years ago, violinist Midori has established a record of achievement that sets her apart as a master musician, an innovator, and a champion of the developmental potential of children. Named a Messenger of Peace by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2007, she has created a new model for young artists who seek to balance the joys and demands of a performing career at the highest level with a hands-on investment in the power of music to change lives. Midori’s 2013-2014 season will bring her first performances in India, Iceland and Africa, the UK premiere of the new violin concerto written for her by Peter Eötvös, multiple engagements with major orchestras throughout Europe, the U.S. and Asia, and four recital tours with pianist Özgür Aydin. She will be featured on two new recordings: the first, of the Hindemith violin concerto with the NDR Symphony and conductor Christoph Eschenbach; the second, a recital program with Aydin on the music of Shostakovich, Janáček and Bloch. She will conduct community engagement programs in four different countries and five different communities within the United States, and continue her leadership role at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music as Chair of the Strings Department. MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES MENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 The piece is scored for solo violin, flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and trumpets in pairs, timpani, and strings. Duration is 26 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on April 15 & 16, 2011, with the associate concertmaster Claude Sim as the soloist and resident conductor Scott O’Neil conducting. Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) was only 26 when he took over leadership of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Despite his youth, he had already earned an international reputation as a composer and pianist. Soon, his conducting skills were also deemed praiseworthy. Under Mendelssohn’s direction, the Gewandhaus Orchestra became known for its fine performances of Bach, and of contemporary pieces by such composers as Schumann and Schubert. Mendelssohn’s own works also appeared on the programs, and the greatest soloists of the century traveled to Leipzig to perform with Mendelssohn and his orchestra. It was a perfect pairing: a devoted conductor who was one of the great artists of the age, and a fine orchestra that equaled his talents. One of Mendelssohn’s great assets in Leipzig was his concertmaster, the violinist Ferdinand David. The men had been good friends since they were teenagers; as adults, they labored together to produce fine music. David even became the de facto assistant conductor, leading rehearsals when Mendelssohn was unavailable. In 1838, Mendelssohn decided to express his appreciation to David by composing a violin concerto. He mentioned the project in a letter to David, noting: “I want to write a violin concerto next winter. One in E minor is running in my head, and the beginning never gives me a moment’s peace.” David responded with genuine enthusiasm and an extravagant pledge: “I promise that I will practice it so well, that the angels in heaven will rejoice.” Although Mendelssohn hinted at great urgency, he was a busy man who traveled frequently. The concerto was not completed until 1844. It premiered March 13, 1845, with David as the soloist with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Mendelssohn was ill that day and was unable to conduct. The orchestra was instead led by Niels Gade, the Danish conductor and composer. Mendelssohn had to content himself with the second performance given later that year. As he was at work on the piece, Mendelssohn frequently consulted with David about the solo part. It is perhaps for that reason that the work is beautifully suited to the violin, and is more lyrical and flowing than many other concertos. The playwright George Bernard Shaw, a great music aficionado, aptly remarked upon the concerto’s “kid glove gentility,” a characteristic of much of Mendelssohn’s work. Still, the most informed assessment of the concerto may be that of the remarkable violinist Joseph Joachim, who made the following observation in 1906: “The Germans have four concertos. The greatest—and the one that makes the fewest concessions— is Beethoven’s. Brahms’ is the closest to Beethoven’s in seriousness. Bruch’s is the richest and the most enchanting. But the dearest of all—the heart’s jewel—is Mendelssohn’s.” Joachim had earned accolades for his interpretations of all four works, and the Brahms concerto was actually composed specifically for his talents. In that context, it is significant that he still viewed Mendelssohn’s concerto as the “dearest.”

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES WAGNER/HENK DE VLIEGER: Tristan und Isolde, An Orchestral Passion The piece is scored for three flutes (3rd doubling piccolo), two oboes and English horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, three bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, harp and strings. Duration is 60 minutes. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony. Most operas would be damaged by the omission of singers. Leave the voices out of La Bohéme or La Traviata or The Barber of Seville or Don Giovanni and most of the substance and impact would be lost. For all that their orchestral parts are well-crafted, those parts are less the emphasis of the work than the vocal parts. With Richard Wagner (1813-1883), it’s a different situation. His operas include substantial orchestral parts, not just in numbers of instruments, but also in amount of time in the spotlight. Leave the singers out, and there is still a lot of story remaining. Mark Twain, who happened to attend a Wagner performance in Bayreuth in 1891, observed that, though it was an interesting experience, he’d wished they’d done it as mimes. Only with Wagner operas would that be possible Wagner himself was known to conduct orchestras in instrumental excerpts from his operas, both to promote upcoming opera performances and to raise immediate funds. So the composer himself would approve of tonight’s orchestral interpretation of Tristan und Isolde. The arrangement is by the Dutch composer Henk de Vlieger (b. 1953), who has condensed the entire 4-hour opera into a one-hour orchestral piece. His telling of the tale in which a Celtic princess, en route to her arranged marriage with a king she has never met, falls in love with the king’s kinsman sent to fetch her, dates from 1994. Vlieger presents the major thematic material of the opera in the order in which it originally appeared—“thematic” as to the music, but also as to the emotional content of the tale. So at first, the title characters, though known to each other, do not yet anticipate that they are fated for one another; that uncertainty is reflected in the opening scene of the music. Their attraction grows, becoming irresistible; they come together passionately and are parted, then reunited. Tristan perishes, and Isolde, transfigured by their love, allows her spirit to follow him. It is a tale of continually evolving emotions, vividly captured in Wagner’s opera, and no less vividly recalled in Vlieger’s orchestral re-working. Although the action of the story is largely contained in its central sections, the very beginning and the very end feature Wagner’s most cutting edge musical ideas. The very first chord of the opera is an unusually shaded one, including additional notes that Brahms—let alone Beethoven—would not have combined with the others. Wagner then proceeded to call forth the individual notes of that chord—which came to be known as the “Tristan chord”—one at a time, sequentially rather than simultaneously, creating from the chord the first phrase of a recurring melody. It is with this melody that Vlieger begins his interpretation, a melody that will recur prominently in his concluding scene, as Wagner himself had done. Frequent visitors of concert halls may find that the last portion of this Tristan is already familiar, as it is derived from the so-called Liebestod scene, which even Wagner himself was known to extract for concert performance. Here, Isolde cradles in her arms her dying lover SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG PROGRAM 7
MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES Tristan. The tale does not specify that she takes her own life, though it is implicit that, unable to live without him, she will now perish, freeing her soul to follow his. Thus, the title of this scene, meaning “love-death.” It is music of rapt and languorous beauty, rich with Wagner’s adventurous harmonies: never so adventurous as to seem dissonant, just enough to be imagining an otherworldly vision. The opera itself premiered in 1865, but Wagner was already anticipating 20th century harmonic developments. Vlieger allows audiences to experience those developments even without the use of singers.
